Newswire: Billy Bob Thornton to star in David E. Kelley’s Amazon show
A year out from a season of Fargo that reminded people why they put up with all his Tom Petty-comparing nonsense, Billy Bob Thornton has been attached to David E. Kelley’s new Amazon show Trial. The actor will play a hangdog, down-on-his-luck Billy Bob Thornton-type named Billy McBride, a lawyer who fell into a bottle after losing a case that resulted in the murder of an innocent child. When an opportunity for redemption presents itself, McBride grabs at it with both hands, hopefully keeping the man portraying him from being able to pick up a microphone or drumsticks for the duration of the role. Kevin Costner was previously in talks for the part, but dropped out a few weeks ago, presumably realizing that he could never look as downtrodden and rumpled on his worst day as Billy Bob Thornton does in his Sunday suit.

Amazon Web Services is now a $6 billion-a-year cloud-computing monster
firehose'almost 40% of Amazon’s consolidated-segment operating income for the second quarter in a row—despite only generating about 8% of the company’s sales'

Amazon’s bet on cloud computing almost a decade ago continues to look brilliant.
Amazon Web Services generated $1.8 billion in revenue during the second quarter, Amazon revealed this afternoon. It has now generated almost $6 billion in sales over the past four quarters.
Growth in the division accelerated during the quarter to 82% year-over-year, up from 49% growth in the first quarter. That reflects that it’s now been more than a year since Amazon had to dramatically cut its AWS pricing, following a major price cut by rival Google.
AWS generated almost $400 million in operating income during the quarter, and almost $1 billion over the past four quarters. It represented almost 40% of Amazon’s consolidated-segment operating income for the second quarter in a row—despite only generating about 8% of the company’s sales.
In short: AWS is one of Amazon’s most valuable assets.
A shooting in a movie theater that left three dead is Louisiana’s eighth mass shooting this year
firehose'Jindal has an A+ rating from US gun lobby the National Rifle Association, and has passed at least seven pieces of gun-related legislation since 2013, including a law last year that lets gun owners carry concealed firearms in restaurants that serve alcohol.'

A gunman opened fire at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Thursday night (July 23), killing two and injuring seven.
According to Louisiana’s KLFY, the shooter was a 58-year-old white male whose name has been withheld from the public. Police report the perpetrator has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. None of the victims have been identified, but one of the murdered was female.
Conditions of the injured range from non-critical to life-threatening, according to local police.
The shooting took place around 7:30pm during a screening of the Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck.
According to KLFY, the theater went into a state of emergency after a teacher who was shot in the leg pulled the fire alarm. Authorities are also investigating a suspicious package that was spotted on the movie theater’s premises.

The incident marks the eighth mass shooting to take place in Louisiana in 2015, according to Shooting Tracker, a crowd-sourced wiki. Governer Bobby Jindal arrived at the scene and expressed his condolences and support for the community and local authorities.
I'm on my way to Lafayette right now. Please say a prayer for the victims at Grand Theatre and their families.

Even Madden 2016 is mocking the Seahawks for losing the Super Bowl
firehosesorry Overbey
Everyone still thinks the Seahawks losing was funny. Except the Seahawks, probably.
You may not have heard, but the Seattle Seahawks were one yard away from winning the Super Bowl. Except, instead of running the ball with Marshawn Lynch, Seattle chose to throw it and Russell Wilson's pass was intercepted. It was a pretty big deal when it happened more than five months ago.
The jokes about it are never, ever going to die.
Just last week, the ESPYS opened with a joke at Seattle's expense. On Wednesday, the Madden video game Twitter got in on the act too and the Seahawks walked right into it. Madden 2016 ratings were released recently which led the Seahawks to tweet this.
C'mon @EAMaddenNFL! What's a Beast got to do to get a 99 TRUCKING? [http://t.co/fxhgqQcdYX] #Madden16 pic.twitter.com/MWB3dYuPZ8

Seemingly harmless enough. Except all it really did was put a ball on a tee for Madden to launch this dinger.

Ouuuuuuuch.
At least Seattle took it in stride.

— Seattle Seahawks (@Seahawks) July 22, 2015
It was bad enough the Seahawks lost the Super Bowl. They've now had to spend the entire offseason hearing about it everyday. At this point, @Seahawks should just tweet out a "Stop, stop, he's already dead" meme and hope for a truce until next season starts.

LSU living mascot Mike, a Bengali-Siberian tiger, turned ten today, and was given a birthday meat cake topped with hard-boiled eggs.

Mike the tiger has a history of lavish birthday celebrations, including last year's turkey bacon cake.
Mike is no fool, so surely he will notice that there are only nine (9) hard-boiled eggs on top of this year's cake.
Where is the tenth egg? Is it buried in the meat cake? Was it hand-delivered to Mike? Did someone at the meat bakery get hungry?
You can send Mike a birthday e-card here.

It should be noted that there is no timeline for these changes to be made. That being said, TriMet has already announced service changes that will happen when the Orange Line opens in September. Finally, if they complete all the changes, it will almost double the number of frequent service bus lines (turning the 20, 35, 44, 47, 48, 52, 71, 76, and 87 into frequent service.)

So About that Cascadia Article
firehose'I don't think that's fair. No one knew what was lurking offshore, and both states are rapidly catching up to where they need to be. You can start here for Washington State and here for Oregon.
In 2015 we really take for granted that seismology, as a science, is barely a century old and plate tectonics, as a science, is barely as old as I am. Neither state is California where earthquakes are so frequent. But they are getting ready. It would have been nice to see that in the New Yorker article.
It also would have been nice to see a mention of the early warning system currently in development on the West Coast. The article describes Japan's advanced system. Similar systems exist in Mexico City and the capital of Romania, and in Taiwan. I wrote about California's last year. There was no mention of the system being developed in California or the one in the Pacific Northwest at all. But again, the narrative was crafted to imply all was but hopeless. Such narratives disappoint me where I know progress is being made.
Like in the shore communities where the only warning will be the quake (and perhaps early warning depending on where the quake's hypocenter is, the further south, the longer leadtime for everyone on north). The tsunami will be ashore within minutes. There won't be time for people to wait. Grim, but many will be saved if they simply walk or even run for higher ground (the paper this is based on is here). And in other places where there is no high ground, shelters are planned or being built that conceivably would save people from drowning in the tsunami. Maybe not fast enough, but it's happening.
A big take away is all these efforts cost money. Identifying hazardous faults costs money (Sandi Doughton discusses this this in depth in her book). Resilience efforts cost money. Early warning systems cost money. A bigger take away is the article seems to have woken people up even as it made them lose their entire shit, people who really should have known better. Media is using this as a teachable moment. Perhaps that's why the narrative was written the way it was. I've known about this for years and still would decamp for the Pacific Northwest if a job opportunity came along but maybe there's a bunch of new transplants who haven't a clue. Bet they do now.'

Wyatt Cenac: Jon Stewart Screamed "Fuck Off" When I Objected to Joke
firehose'Important to note that he was the only black writer on staff at The Daily Show for the four years he worked there.'
In a newly released episode of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, Daily Show alum Wyatt Cenac recounted his troubled relationship with host Jon Stewart, which culminated in a blow up over an impression the former correspondent found racially insensitive.
Cenac says Stewart screamed at him after he admitted cringing at an impression of Herman Cain he found reminiscent of the Amos ‘n’ Andy character Kingfish.

“He got incredibly defensive,” Cenac told Maron:
“I remember he was like, ‘What are you trying to say? There’s a tone in your voice.’ I was like, ‘There’s no tone. It bothered me.’ And then he got upset. He stood up and he was just like, ‘Fuck off. I’m done with you.’ And he just started screaming that to me, and he screamed it a few times. ‘Fuck off! I’m done with you.’ And he stormed out. I didn’t know if I had been fired.”
Cenac said he had an emotional breakdown after the confrontation but stayed on the show for another miserable year before quitting.
“I was shaking, and I just sat there by myself on the bleachers and fucking cried. And it’s a sad thing,” Cenac told Maron. “That’s how I feel. That’s how I feel in this job: I feel alone.”
“I represent my community,” added Cenac. “I represent my people, and I try to represent them the best that I can. I gotta be honest if something seems questionable, because if not, then I don’t want to be in a position where I am being untrue not just to myself but to my culture, because that’s exploitative.”

TSA Supervisor Calls Police on Teen for Filming Dad’s Pat-Down
A 16-year-old boy has caused a stir after releasing a video showing himself being denied the right to film a checkpoint pat-down — something the TSA officially allows.
YouTube user Apple Lucas claims that he was denied the right to film while being patted down by a TSA supervisor at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. He then tried to film his father getting patted down, only to have the TSA agent call a police officer to the scene.“I explained to him that it clearly states on the TSA website that you are allowed to film the TSA agents as long as you don’t film their monitors and are not interfering with their process,” Apple Lucas writes.
This TSA Supervisor should be fired, and of course that won’t happen, because TSA is unaccountable to anyone.

Newswire: eSports proves it’s a real sport, starts testing players for performance-enhancing drugs
Finally proving that competitive gaming and eSports are legitimate members of the sporting world, just like baseball, football, or The Olympics, the German-based Electronic Sports League has announced that it will begin randomly drug testing its participants in order to curb the use of performance-enhancing substances. The policy shift comes in the wake of the posting of a recent YouTube video, in which a competitor in a $250,000 Counter-Strike tournament discussed the widespread use of the ADHD medication Adderall by players on the circuit. (The discussion happens at 7:44 in the video below.)

Despite the repeated arcade-screen assertions of former FBI director William S. Sessions, there have been multiple indications in recent months that eSports competitors were using stimulants like Adderall to improve their concentration and focus. Notably, Eurogamer published an interview back in April with a player who described the effects of the drug, saying that it ...
