UFC releases full video of Tim Kennedy going nuts on Yoel Romero backstage at UFC 178

by Jesse Holland

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight Tim Kennedy was irate after getting stopped in the third round of his middleweight fight against Yoel Romero at the UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event last Saturday night (Sept. 27, 2014) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

See how their fight played out here.

Kennedy had Romero on rubber legs at the end of the second stanza and "Soldier of God" was likely saved by the bell. However, once the third round got underway, Romero remained on his stool and awarded himself some extra recovery time. Whether it was shady tactics or an unavoidable set of circumstances, all depends on who you ask.

Either way, a beat-up Kennedy blew a gasket backstage and gave Romero an earful.

New, disgusting photos surface of Joe Riggs hand post-gunshot blast (NSFW)

by Jesse Holland

Rumor has it he didn't even shed a tear, because HE'S DIESEL.

Blech!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight veteran Joe Riggs, who was forced to withdraw from his upcoming Paulo Thiago fight at the UFC Fight Night 51 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on FOX Sports 1 after accidentally shooting himself, has revealed new photos of the blast damage to his hand.

And they are disgusting (via TMZ).

Riggs (40-14, 1 NC) will undoubtedly be out of action for the remainder of 2014, but vows to return to the Octagon in 2015. The good news is, "Diesel" will have a UFC glove covering that hideous stump, which looks like that demon hand from Rockwell's "Somebody Watching Me" video.

The 31-year-old Arizonian is the winner of six straight (with five finishes), having recently outpointed Mike Bronzoulis under the Bellator MMA banner last November in Long Beach, California.

Help Us Identify This Bike Theft and Attempted Purse Snatch Suspect

by Santa Cruz Police

This guy doubled-down on his mini crime spree in the 700 block of Soquel Ave.   Video images recently became available, so we are hoping someone recognizes him. This is him as he is preparing to steal the bicycle prior to the attempt purse snatch.

On March 6th, at approx. 12:30 PM, our suspect stole a bicycle from the storage area of a business in the 700 block of Soquel Ave.  After calmly stealing the bicycle, he began his test ride heading eastbound on Soquel Avenue.

The test ride of his newly stolen bicycle was momentarily put on hold as our suspect found his attention diverted by a 58 year old woman walking on the sidewalk and carrying a purse.  Unable to resist the temptation, the suspect attempted a purse theft “rodeo style” while still astride on the bicycle.

In the course of attempting to take the purse, our suspect struck the victim in the back.  Thankfully, our victim was able to retain her purse as our suspect rode away.  She has some scrapes and bruises, but otherwise OK.

Three cheers for our victim fighting back and thwarting this Desperado.

The bicycle is described as a grey Schwinn street bicycle with thin tires & wheels.  The bike has a modified seat post using aluminum cans as a spacer for the seat post.

He is still out there and may be sporting that stolen bicycle.  If anyone recognizes him, we’d appreciate a tip.  You can call Officer Leo Gomez, or our Investigations Unit at (831) 420-5820, or you can submit an anonymous tip via our Website (www.santacruzpolice.com), smartphone app, or text-a-tip.  If you see him cruising around town, you can call 9-1-1 and report him.

A Futuristic Space Shuttle-Like Mountain Shelter for 8

by Caroline Williamson

A Futuristic Space Shuttle-Like Mountain Shelter for 8

Back in 1938, Charlotte Perriand worked with Pierre Jeanneret to develop a futuristic mountain shelter called the Refuge Tonneau. Her love of the mountains, plus inspiration from a children’s fairground ride that was photographed in Croatia, led to the idea of a space shuttle-like structure with a metal frame and a central pole, much like that of a carousel. After careful research, Cassina created a reproduction based on the drawings, notes, and furnishings that were already produced by Perriand for other projects.

The dodecahedron structure was ahead of its time as decades later, similar structures were used in the Antarctic in 2002 and at the Mars Society Desert Research Station in 2011. The metal framework is made from industrial materials, like aluminum for the panels due to them being lightweight and easy to assemble and disassemble. The shape is meant to not resist the wind and the adjustable piles help bring stability on uneven land.

The interior is made from pinewood giving the space a warm, natural feel that’s welcoming to visitors.

Inside, the bottom floor can sleep two with single beds that fold down and on the mezzanine level, there are two double beds and two single beds. Overall, the shelter can sleep eight people!

Perriand thought carefully of the layout and made sure everything had a place in the small residence. The heater fits inside the central steel pillar taking up very room but providing heat for the whole interior. The tiny kitchen has a small area to work and a steel sink where snow from above melts down to provide running water. There’s also a shelf for a camping stove and space for food items.

The single beds can be folded away when not in use thanks to a system of leather belts that mimic those on sleeper cars on trains at that time. During the day they can be used as seating.

Show Off How Many Books You’ve Read with this Balancing Bookshelf

I was on Etsy and stumbled on Cush Design Studio’s Etsy shop and Chris Cush’s cool Balancing Bookshelf. It’s such a simple concept and executed simply as well, yet its delicacy and craft requires someone who took the time to make sure it was done right.

Stack your read books on one side and unread ones on the other side, or maybe fiction versus nonfiction, or classics versus modern… I’m sure you can come up with tons of creative ways to display your books using this shelf.

Police Halt Two Men With Assault Rifles Outside Farmers Market — Now The Men Might Sue

by Ian Millhiser

AR-15-assault-weapon1

Earlier this month, two men decided to wander into a crowded farmers market in Appleton, Wisconsin each with an AR-15 assault rifle strapped across their back. They did not make it to the market. After several residents called 911, expressing concerns about the two gun-toting men. Police briefly detained the men, with at least one officer drawing his weapon after they determined that the assault rifles were real. The men were briefly handcuffed and detained but were eventually released without citations.

Although open carry is legal in Wisconsin, police say they stopped the men to prevent a panic — “walking into a farmers market filled with a couple thousand individuals would be a recipe for disaster.” Yet the a county attorney told the Appleton Post-Crescent that the men could not be charged because “they had not made it to the farmers market” at the point when they were stopped and the men are reportedly considering a lawsuit against the police. In video of the men’s encounter with the police, one of the men tells an officer that they are carrying a highly visible pair of assault rifles into a crowded public market for “self defense.”

This stunt is only the latest example of individuals carrying assault rifles into public places in an apparent attempt to make a statement about their understanding of the Second Amendment. Last month, a Texas preacher named Terry Holcomb videoed himself walking into several businesses, including a Wal Mart, with an AR-15 across his back. Earlier this year, a Utah man carried a similar weapon into a JC Penney — claiming that he need it to protect from “criminals, cartels, drug lords” and other “evil men.”

Wearable Sculptures by Tracy Featherstone

Wearable Sculptures by Tracy Featherstone

Wearable Structures by Tracy Featherstone is a series of artistic wooden sculptures that interact with the body. They seem to be built around oneself, like giant geometric fungi.

Over the past few years Tracy has been exploring the daily struggle we all face between control and chaos. She says “The balance is precarious and can tip one way or another in an instant.” Using traditional building materials to create micro-environmental structures that attach to our bodies is a way to try and control, or “impose order on a situation that is moving out of control.”

Local Surf School Owner Arrested for Lewd Acts with Children

by Santa Cruz Police

Santa Cruz Police Detectives have arrested the owner of a local surfing school for “Lewd and Lascivious Acts” with children (Penal Code Section 288(c)(1)).

Dylan Greiner (38 yrs), owner and operator of Santa Cruz Surf School was arrested late Friday night after detectives served a search warrant at his home and business.

Mr. Greiner befriended young students from his surf school.  The 2 identified victims were 14 and 13 when the relationships began.  He would coax with them with free surf lessons and/or employment at his business.  Greiner made inappropriate sexual advances toward his victims.  He also took inappropriate photographs of the victims focusing on private body parts.

On August 16, 2013, Detectives served a search warrant at Mr. Greiner’s home in the 700 block of Modesto Ave and business in the 100 block of Center Street.   They seized several significant items of evidence during the search.  Detectives uncovered a video collection where Mr. Greiner secretly recorded young girls changing into wetsuits in the dressing rooms at his business.  They also uncovered a multitude of photographs and other video secretly recorded by Mr. Greiner where he purposely focused on breasts, buttocks and genitalia of young girls.

Information shows Mr. Greiner has been pursuing inappropriate relationships with young girls for at least the past 4 years. Mr. Greiner, now 38 was at least 19-20 years older than his known victims.

During his interview with Detectives, Mr. Greiner admitted to the above actions as well as downloading inappropriate images of young girls in the 13 and 14 year range.  He also authored an apology letter to the two known victims and the community for his behavior.

Detectives believe there are more victims in the Santa Cruz area.  A preliminary search of one of the computers, seized during the search warrant, showed thousands of videos secretly capturing young girls on the beach, as young as 8-10 years old.  Detectives are still pouring over the multitude of dressing room and beach videos and photographs in an attempt to identify additional victims.  Detectives are asking concerned parents and additional victims to contact the Santa Cruz Police Department Investigations Unit at (831) 420-5820.

Mr. Greiner was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of Lewd and Lascivious Acts with Children.  Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.  At the request of Detectives, Judge Gallagher approved a bail increase to $500,000.   Thank You Judge Gallagher!!

Texas Trooper Shoves 74-Year-Old Then Arrests Her For Felony Assault When She Hits Him With Her Purse

by Tim Cushing
Fenriq

What kind of a cop assaults an old lady and then arrests her for letting him know he's behaving like an ass? Texas State Troopers, apparently.

The further installation of the police state will continue.

On what was presumably a hot, sweltering night in the nation's Texas' capital, a senator's epic filibuster temporarily derailed an abortion bill. This all went far from smoothly as time stamps were changed post-vote, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst (whose pet legislation was being talked over) briefly threatened to have media members arrested for "inciting a riot" and a 74-year-old woman was arrested for assaulting an officer.

According to the Probable Cause Affidavit, the Lt. Governor order that the gallery be cleared and the Troopers were enforcing that order. When they got to Martha Northington and told her to leave, there was a problem.
What kind of "problem?" Well, the kind of problem posed by 74-year-old women who just don't move as fast as the trooper thought she should. Here's video of the incident.
According to the arrest affidavit, Northington resisted by grabbing her seat. Unfortunately for the Trooper, the scene was being videotaped. At 0:02 in the video, you can clearly see Northington reach down to pick up her purse and newspaper. Almost immediately after this the Trooper on her right grabs her arm and you hear Northington protest that he’s hurting her. You can see that the black Trooper is not concerned by her picking up the purse, but the white officer has a death grip on her right wrist.
The arrest affidavit carries its own narrative, which is at odds with what was captured on video.
She attempted to resist by grabbing the chair, not standing, and pulling back from me. We broke her hold of the chair and got her up and as I escorted her up the gallery steps Trooper Hall released her. I was escorting her by the arm up the steps by myself and she continued to try and pull away from me. At the top of the stairs, she spun and slapped my face with her open hand and told me to let her go. The intentional slap to the face by Northington was offensive and I was currently wearing a State Trooper uniform...At this point i spun her around and proceeded to handcuff her for the assault. While trying to handcuff her she continued to resist by pulling her arms and attempted to twist away from me...Ms. Northington was transported to Travis County SO without further incident...
As was already pointed out, Northington was gathering her belongings rather than holding on to her chair. In fact, it looks as if she's voluntarily leaving, right up to the point that the trooper ups his aggression level.

At the 11-second mark, she does hit the trooper in the face, but with her purse (and that from an angle where she didn't have much of a wind-up). But the officer refers to it as an "open hand slap," something that sounds undeniably more threatening (and "offensive") than "At the top of the stairs, the 74-year-old woman hit me with her purse..."

After hustling an obviously dangerous elderly woman out of the building, the trooper attempted to book her on a felony charge.
Northington was apparently originally charged with Assault on a Public Servant, a third degree felony, but the arraigning magistrate reduced the charges to Resisting Arrest and Assault by Contact, Class A and Class C misdemeanors, respectively.
Because Contempt of Cop has yet to be codified into our criminal statutes, the trooper allegedly drew a blank at first when filling out his report. But even the final reduced charges are ridiculous, especially the resisting arrest charge. If you're going to charge someone with resisting arrest, it should logically follow that an arrest was already in progress.
OK, even if we give the trooper the benefit of the doubt, if she is resisting arrest, there has to be an underlying charge. What was she being arrested for in the first place?

Second, any assault on a peace officer is a felony, even if that is just by contact (i.e., an offensive touch)... Here, Northington supposedly slapped the trooper with an open hand. Yet the black trooper does not make a move to help the trooper who was just “assaulted” by Northington.
An assault charge should only cover actual threats to officer safety, rather than just be used to add additional charges to the arrest, one for every unapproved bit of contact between the arrestee and the officer. Even if it was technically assault, shouldn't a trained officer be willing and able to "walk off" being hit by a woman's swung purse, especially if the person swinging it is elderly?

Apparently not. Once you've overreacted, the only way to save face in the law enforcement world is to push forward, trumping up charges and rewriting the narrative. And if you think that might be problematic, don't worry. The cleanup crew will be right behind you, ready to condemn the public for thinking bad thoughts about law enforcement.
In response to criticism, [DPS spokesperson Katherine] Cesinger wrote in a statement that troopers only took “actions they deemed appropriate” when responding to protesters that night.

“Our DPS troopers work every day to ensure that all visitors and staff at the Texas Capitol remain safe and that order is maintained,” Cesinger wrote. “It’s unfortunate that some find it is easy to pass judgment on the officers who are risking their lives every day to protect and serve Texas.”
The lesson is: because law enforcement members perform a dangerous but necessary job, they are never to be questioned or criticized for their tactics, actions or words.

That's very simply a complete load of self-serving crap. The badges these officers wear aren't a shield against criticism or permission slips to perform their jobs however they see fit. There are oaths to uphold, rights to protect and policies to follow, all of which seem to be ignored once someone triggers the very low threshold to unofficial "contempt of cop" charges. The statement from the DPS is profoundly wrongheaded and only serves to widen the gulf between law enforcement and the people they serve.
