9 Major Revisions That Reshape Science and History

by Megan Hess

History and science books have all the right answers, right? Right?

New discoveries keep our world turning 'round, but how are we supposed to disavow facts that every teacher from kindergarten through high school drilled into our heads?

The death of certain theories doesn't mean that scientists and historians are lying to us — rather, it means society is getting a little bit closer to the truth. Below, we've compiled some mind-blowing revisions and revelations to the world as we know it. Some may result in totally new school curricula — and for others, it's an edited Wikipedia page or two. Pretty Soon Your Vanilla Flavoring Will Come From... Sawdust

by Ashley Feinberg

Pretty Soon Your Vanilla Flavoring Will Come From... Sawdust

It's not uncommon to hear bibliophiles and pedants waxing poetic about the wonderful and incomparable "old book smell," but tiresome as these tirades may be, it turns out they might actually be on to something. Thanks to a recent scientific study, that same, vanilla-tinged aroma wafting off the pages of old tomes is now the most efficient way to flavor our ice cream.

Scientists have long known that lignin, a biopolymer found in wood pulp (think sawdust), produces vanillin when it oxidizes—unfortunately the only previously known process, though cheap, used sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphide, both highly corrosive mixtures. Plus, the non-vanillin byproducts of this method have to be neutralized with strong acids before they can be properly disposed of. In other words, that method sucks and is consequently rarely used.

The way we do synthesize vanillin currently uses the petrochemical guaiacolis, which is less environmentally damaging—but pricey.

But thanks to ionic liquids, which are salts in liquid form, Ahmad Shamsuir and DK Abdullah of the University Putra Malaysia may have finally settled on the best of both worlds. Although most ionic liquids are hugely toxic—a quality generally not ideal for things we stuff in our mouths—by playing around with the cations and anions, the scientists were able to majorly reduce its reactivity and make it safer. By dissolving lignin from a nearby saw mill and bubbling oxygen up through it, they were able to identify the vanillin using infrared analysis and separate it from its (relatively harmless) co-oxidation byproducts.

Easy, environmentally-friendly, and equally importantly, cheap. Vanillin flavoring is ten times more in demand than its natural counterpart, so if we want to keep the artificially flavored vanilla products flowing freely, a process that cuts down on dangerous waste and saves money is huge. So the next time you're enjoying vanilla-anything, just remember, that wonderful vanilla taste is probably all thanks to delicious, delicious sawdust. [MIT Tech Review]

‘Riddick’ International Trailer

by Angie Han

Riddick

Pitch Black came out in 2000, one year before The Fast and the Furious. But while the latter has since spawned five sequels, the former is only now preparing to put its second sequel in theaters. Still, better late than never, right?

Directed by David Twohy, Riddick once again stars Vin Diesel as the Furian warrior introduced in Pitch Black. Left for dead on a desolate planet, he soon finds himself fighting off both vicious alien predators and ruthless bounty hunters (played by the likes of Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Mollà, and Bokeem Woodbine). We’ve already gotten a taste of the film thanks to a domestic trailer and teaser, but the new international promo packs in some new footage. Check it out after the jump.

The new video is subtitled in French, but the dialogue is all in English.

Riddick premieres September 6.

The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000?s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004?s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

Digg will begin rolling out its new reader product next week and open up the beta version to everyone on June 26, the company said in a blog post Monday.

Digg, which is owned by Betaworks, announced in mid-March that it would develop an RSS reader, shortly after Google announced plans to kill off Google Reader. Since then, Digg's team has apparently received feedback from 18,000 on how to design the product.

"For our first public release, in time to (just) beat the shutdown of Google Reader, our aim has been to nail the basics: a web and mobile reading experience that is clean, simple, functional, and fast," Digg's team wrote in the blog post. "We’re also introducing a tool that allows users to elevate the most important stories to the top." Read more...

by Sam Laird

You don't always see someone hit a hole-in-one at one of the world's biggest golf tournaments. But even when you do, it's never this ridiculous

PGA Tour rookie Shawn Stefani had one of the most incredible aces you'll ever see on Sunday during the U.S. Open at Pennsylvania's Merion Golf Club

What makes his shot so amazing? As you'll see in the video above, the ball doesn't even land on the green originally, instead hitting the rough, taking a fortuitous reverse-bounce and then rolling some 50 feet into the cup. It's the first U.S Open hole-in-one ever at Merion. It, of course, also made Stefani a viral sports hit online Read more...

Sharing Your Web Browser with Random Strangers Is Horrible and Awesome

by Eric Limer

You're never really alone on the Internet. Chances are if you're on a webpage, someone else is there too; you just don't see them. It doesn't have to be that way though. "We See in Every Direction" is a web browser you can share with dozens of other Internet denizens all at once. It is the best and the worst.

Developed by Swedish artist Jonas Lund—of Paint Your Pizza fame—as part of Rhizome’s online exhibition series The Download, "We See In Every Direction" is an incredibly bewildering browsing experience. The concept is simple: everyone gets control at the same time and things immediately devolve into madness. Depending on what kind of person you are, this is a great opportunity for some trolling.

You can download the browser and give it a try for yourself here, and get your own personal taste of the chaos. That is, assuming enough people are around to really get things kicking. There's only one way to make that happen though, so hop on and give it a whirl. Just steel yourself for all the horrors the Internet has to offer. Also pure bliss. But mostly both at the same time. Hotline Miami 2 is in some kind of playable form at E3

by Jessica Conditt
Hotline Miami 2 is in some kind of playable form at E3
Hotline Miami 2 is well on its way through the brutal development process, and it's playable at E3, a tweet from Devolver press agent Stephanie Schopp revealed.

We spoke about Hotline Miami 2 with developers Jonatan Söderström and Dennis Wedin at GDC this year, and they said the sequel will focus on the emotional aspects of life in the 90s, with parallel plots spawned from events in the first game. Söderström and Wedin said Hotline Miami 2 was in development for PC, though it could ship same-day on Vita.

The main character in Hotline Miami, "Jacket," has a minor role in the sequel but won't be playable. Wedin called Hotline Miami 2 "the grand finale."

Edward Snowden said he wants "the courts and people of Hong Kong" to decide his fate in a new interview published Wednesday.

"I have had many opportunities to flee Hong Kong, but I would rather stay and fight the United States government in the courts, because I have faith in Hong Kong’s rule of law," Snowden told the South China Morning Post.

On Sunday, Snowden revealed himself as the source behind The Guardian and The Washington Post's reports on the National Security Agency's surveillance programs. He also revealed his whereabouts, a Hong Kong hotel, which triggered a race among media outlets to locate him first Read more...
