‘The Robotic Church’, A Site-Specific Installation in Brooklyn Where Pneumatic Sculptures Come to Life

by Lori Dorn
Mrdesplaines

on shrooms....

In 2013, artist Chico MacMurtrie of Amorphic Robot Works created The Robotic Church, a site-specific installation in which pneumatic sculptures eerily came to life in a former Norwegian Seaman’s church located in Red Hook, Brooklyn. MacMurtrie recently reopened the installation for Obscura Day 2015.

The Robotic Church is an immersive experience featuring 42 kinetic robots ranging from 12 inches to 15 feet in size, hung from the walls, scattered on the floor, climbing to the ceiling and overpowering the space with an impressive cacophony of sound. Humanoid in form, each robot functions to perform a unique task, creating its own individual noise to contribute to the orchestral whole.

Iconic Scene From ‘Alien 3′ Recreated Using a Black Stapler and an Image of a Frightened Ellen Ripley

by Justin Page

Bruno Mosconi Ruy has created a great video where he reenacts an iconic scene from Alien 3 using a black stapler and a printed image of a frightened Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). During the short video, Ruy slowly moves the stapler (standing in for the xenomorph) close to the image of Ripley and releases the staple tray to depict the Alien’s inner mouth popping out.

Engineers Teach Robots How to Push Heavy Objects Using Their Bodies Like Humans

by Glen Tickle

Engineers at the JSK Laboratory at the University of Tokyo have taught an HRP-2 robot to push heavy objects using its body the way humans can. The action is a matter of balance and friction, as the robot calculates different possible positions to attempt to push an object based on its weight.

The team presented their results at the 2015 International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) held between May 26 and May 30, 2015 in Seattle, Washington.

Beautiful Mirrored Art Installations in the Desert by Iranian Artist Shirin Abedinirad

by Rebecca Escamilla

evocation

Tehran- and Florence-based artist Shirin Abedinirad built Evocation and Narcissus, two mirrored art installations in the desert of Iran. Evocation, the artist writes, represents the relationships between the “human mind and the fundamental elements in nature such as wind, and sand among others.” Her use of mirrors in this piece represents water. Narcissus uses mirrors held upright in sand, “showing the beauty of the desert to itself.”

Another mirrored piece by Abedinirad—Heaven on Earth—was installed directly on a set of stairs to create an illusion of walking in the sky at Fabrica in Treviso, Italy last year.

daft punk ripping off something from the 70s?!?!!? i don't believe it..

daft-punk-70s-inspired-merchandise-00

Last year, Daft Punk released a raft of ’70s-inspired merchandise through its site, continuing the electronic duo’s sonic foray into the disco decade begun with their 2013 album, Random Access Memories. The inventive band merch — complete with amazing period-correct advertisements — is still rolling out, and this season’s goods are both kitschy and straightforward. Last month saw the release of a coffee mug, logo tee and skateboard (now sold out, sadly); they’re joined this week by a yo-yo, Frisbee and New Era fitted. Shop the selection now at Daft Punk’s site.

‘Time Reversed in New York’, Footage of Busy Pedestrians Walking Backwards in Manhattan

by Lori Dorn

Filmmaker Jeremy Meek created “Time Reversed in New York,” which used the reversed footage that he shot of pedestrians walking through Times Square, in the subway, and over the Brooklyn Bridge in order to capture the surreal nature of crowds moving backwards.

I recently traveled to some of the busiest sections of Manhattan and filmed them in reverse. There’s something bizarrely dreamlike about large groups of people moving in reverse and it makes some of New York’s more claustrophobic areas just a tiny bit magical.
