A Rock-Paper-Scissors Robot That Wins Every Time

by Kimber Streams

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have created a new robot that plays Rock-paper-scissors and wins every time. Of course, the robot’s cheating. It uses a high-speed camera to recognize the human’s play, and then chooses a counter and forms that shape almost instantaneously using a high-speed motor. While humans take about 60ms to form the shape of rock, paper, or scissors, version two of the robot can do it in just 20ms. Previously, we wrote about the first version of the unbeatable Rock-paper-scissors robot.

Sono, Design Concept For a Noise Canceling Device That Sticks to Your Window

by Lori Dorn

The Sono is a design concept for a noise-canceling device that sticks to your window. If made into real product it could be a very modern and unobtrusive way to address the issue of noise pollution invading the peace and quiet of your home. Sono was a submission for the 2012 James Dyson Award.

“Sono” transforms windows into an active noise canceling system that allows to eliminate noise or filter that would otherwise pass through the window. With concentric broadband antennas, the device gains additional energy that it gains from sources other wireless signals and electrical. This causes the device not only provides a more comfortable room acoustics but also reduces the electric smog.

Watch This Robot Artist Draw Abstract Shapes
As we saw in our November 2013 issue, we'll continue see projects like this one, robots drawing. A bit beyond the palette and canvas this project is a fascinating way to incorporate robots into artwork. Artist Matthias Dörfelt, created a Roomba-like robot with a random algorithm, Dörfelt places it on a square of paper and lets the little guy go to town. Known as the Robo Faber, it is great to see a robot creating such great work. Watch the video after the jump.

Imagine the looks on peoples’ faces when a sudden rain storm turns your burnt orange Nissan Skyline R33 into an oily black. That’s exactly what the custom tuners at Auto Kandy have figured out using a special heat-sensitive paint that has left the rest of the market sitting with their jaws-dropped. There’s not a lot out there yet on exactly how this paint works or how the shop applied it, but you can bet your britches that this Hot Wheels-esque mod will be a pretty common sight in short order. See the team demonstrate their work after the click and learn more about their shop here.
