Preorder Arcade1Up's Stunning New Arcade Cabinets For $299, Instead of the Expected $399

by Shep McAllister on Kinja Deals, shared by Shep McAllister to The A.V. Club

These 3/4 sized Arcade1Up arcade cabinets were supposed to cost $399 each, and indeed, that’s what GameStop is charging for preorders. But ever since last night, Walmart’s only been asking for $299. We aren’t sure if it’s a mistake (in which case your order stands to possibly be canceled) or intentional, but if you’ve…

First Batch of Locations Announced for ‘Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich’ Theatrical Release

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

lubbock?!? the fucking alamo drafthouse in LUBBOCK (and el paso, while we're at it) gets a release, but not austin?

Yes, a Puppet Master film on the big screen. Imagine that!

RLJE Films’ hotly anticipated Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich is arriving in limited theaters and on Digital HD and VOD platforms August 17, 2018, and it promises to be the kind of gory good time you’ll watch to watch up on the big screen, with a packed crowd.

Cinestate just announced the first batch of locations for the film’s theatrical arrival, and they urge you to “check your local theater for details and showtimes if you don’t see a theater near you.” Find the first batch of locations below!

The reimagining of the Full Moon Features cult classic stars Udo Kier (Suspiria, Blade, Brawl in Cell Block 99), Thomas Lennon (TV’s “Reno 911!”), Jenny Pellicer (TV’s “Cocaine Godmother”), Nelson Franklin (TV’s “Veep”), Charlyne Yi (This is 40), Michael Pare (Eddie and the Cruisers), and Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator).

In the new film, directed by Sonny Laguna (We Are Monsters) and Tommy Wiklund (Wither), and written by S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk)…

“Recently divorced and reeling, Edgar (Lennon) returns to his childhood home to regroup his life. When Edgar finds a nefarious looking puppet in his deceased brother’s room, he decides to sell the doll for some quick cash at a small-town convention celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the infamous Toulon Murders.

Girl-next-door Ashley (Pellicer) and his comic book shop boss, Markowitz (Franklin), join Edgar for the doomed road trip. All hell breaks loose when a strange force animates the puppets at the convention, setting them on a bloody killing spree that’s motivated by an evil as old as time.”

Meagan reviewed the film out of the Overlook Film Festival and called it “unapologetic,” explaining that it “delivers bonkers gore and offensive humor!”

a lot of the usually-cogent comment section discourse has been decrying this show for being "more satire/entertainment that doesn't really create any positive change." well... here you go.

Jared Leto Fully Bites Into ‘Morbius’ Role

by Brad Miska
Emahlstadt

not a huge fan of marvel movies, nor a huge fan of jared leto necessarily. but i like morbius and will remain casually optimistic here.

Variety has confirmed that Jared Leto is now locked to star in Morbius, Sony’s next dark Spider-Man spinoff following that of Venom, bowing in theaters this October. Safe House director Daniel Espinosa will bring the Living Vampire to life.

Leto, who also played the Joker in DC’s Suicide Squad, is expected to play the title character, a scientist who, in trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, accidentally transforms himself into a living vampire. Though disgusted by his own bloodlust, he chooses to prey upon criminals he deems unworthy of life.

Sony Pictures is going all-in on their own dark universe with plans for this October’Venom set to lead into the Sinister Six supervillain movie.

Filming on Morbius is set to begin sometime this year for a yet-to-be-determined 2019 release.

Morbius was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane and first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101, the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.

Hasbro and Blizzard Come Together for Overwatch Reaper Nerf Gun [SDCC]

by Gavin Sheehan

During San Diego Comic-Con, Hasbro revealed a brand-new Nerf gun that pays homage to Overwatch‘s Reaper in the best way possible. The Wight Reaper Blaster is a Nerf replica of Reaper’s Hellfire Shotguns from the game, with the added fun of being lightweight and shooting eight blast shots. Here’s the full description from Hasbro.

credit//Hasbro

The Wight Reaper Blaster is the first in the series developed in a collaboration between Blizzard Entertainment and the NERF Rival brand to bring the iconic Overwatch accessories to life. Fans of the team-based action game will enjoy custom NERF RIVAL rounds with the Overwatch logo that are specifically colored for each blaster. The blaster will hold eight NERF RIVAL rounds, which it can propel at up to 90 feet per second. It will be equipped with a spring-action mechanism, a ready indicator, and a safety lock.

There’s currently no other info on the gun beyond the idea that it will be released sometime in 2019. If this gun doesn’t come with a matching pair, that will be a shame as you need two for it to truly be Reaper’s gun. Here’s hoping they don’t go for the predictable cash grab and only sell them in single units and offer a double.

Watch the Comic-Con Trailer for Syfy’s Deadly Class and Earn 100 Punk Points

by Jude Terror
Emahlstadt

the comic is great. this looks dumb.

Syfy dropped the first trailer for Deadly Class at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday. Produced by the Russo Brothers, Deadly Class adapts the Image comic of the same name by Rick Remender, Wes Craig, and Lee Loughridge. Here’s the official description of the comic:

It’s 1987. Marcus Lopez hates school. His grades suck. He has no money. The jocks are hassling his friends. He can’t focus in class, thanks to his mind constantly drifting to the stunning girl in the front row and the Dag Nasty show he has tickets to. But the jocks are the children of Joseph Stalin’s top assassin, the teachers are members of an ancient league of assassins, the class he’s failing is “Dismemberment 101,” and his crush, a member of the most notorious crime syndicate in Japan, has a double-digit body count.

Welcome to the most brutal high school on Earth, where the world’s top crime families send the next generation of assassins to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At King’s Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn’t always metaphorical, nor is your fellow classmates’ poison.

Join writer RICK REMENDER with rising star WESLEY CRAIG (Batman) and legendary colorist LEE LOUGHRIDGE (Fear Agent) to reminisce about the mid-1980s underground through the eyes of the most damaged and dangerous teenagers on Earth.

Deadly Class is set to premiere in 2019. If you don’t watch this trailer, the only solution is to drown yourself in hobo piss. Nobody wants that, so check it out below.

Matt Groening’s ‘Disenchantment’ Trailer Laughs Through the Dark Ages

by Brad Miska
Emahlstadt

"what's this feeling i don't wanna drink away?"

Last summer, Netflix ordered twenty episodes of “Disenchantment”, an adult-themed animated comedy-fantasy series from the mind of “The Simpsons” and “Futurama” creator Matt Groening. With the release set for August 17, 2018, Netflix has brought the first full trailer to the San Diego Comic-Con.

In “Disenchantment”, viewers will be whisked away to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.

“Ultimately,” says Matt Groening, “‘Disenchantment’ will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”

The series will feature the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson (“Bean”), Nat Faxon (“Elfo”) and Eric Andre (“Luci”), along with John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery. Animation is being done by Rough Draft Studios (“Futurama”).

2010’s ‘Dante’s Inferno’ Latest Xbox One Backwards-Compatible Game

by Pat Torfe
Emahlstadt

noice. pretty sure i owned this at one point, but never finished it. think i got stuck on a boss or something. everyone said it was a god of war clone at the time -- never played god of war but heard its good and enjoyed my time with this one.

In 2010, Dead Space devs Visceral Games took a bit of a break from the series and gave us a game based on Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. You know it as Dante’s Inferno. And now, it’s the latest game added to Xbox One’s backwards compatibility service, joining the likes of the original Darksiders, Deadly Premonition and of course, the entire Dead Space series.

The game followed Dante as a Templar knight from the Crusade, who is guided by the spirit of the poet Virgil. Dante must fight through the nine Circles of Hell to rescue his lover Beatrice from the clutches of Lucifer. Dante wielded Death’s Scythe, and like in God of War, could use it in a variety of combos and finishing moves. The game received praise for its depiction of Hell, but was bogged down by repetitive gameplay and being mentioned in the same breath as, well, God of War.

With the game’s cliffhanger ending, there were hints that EA was going to produce a sequel. Unfortunately, as we know now, that seems unlikely. Do yourself a favour, and give Visceral some love by tracking this one down if you haven’t already played it.

2020 Texas Football Recruiting: #1 Longhorn priority running back Zachary Evans will camp on August 3rd

by Scipio Tex
Emahlstadt

fuckin north shore

Houston North Shore soon-to-be junior Zach Evans, a 2020 recruit, is already one of the most sought after athletes in the country. The Texas Longhorns have prioritized him over every RB in the country, if not any recruit at any position in the country. Early (read: premature) indications suggest that it will be a Texas-LSU battle, with Texas A&M, OU and a host of prominent national suitors also making their case.

I’m definitely of the 97% of running backs are a creation of their environment school, but some are special enough to create their own ecosystem. As a 5-11, 195 pound sophomore who compiled 27 touchdowns last year, Evans appears to be the latter variety. Check him out here.

And he still has two more years to develop before seeing a college campus.

Texas currently boasts a top heavy 7 scholarship running backs on its roster, but none have yet asserted themselves in a lead role or proven special; by demonstrating the ability to turn eight yards into sixty or three yards into six. The Austin running back by committee will carry on.

In 2017, Texas missed out on a comparable caliber of running back in CenTex athlete J.K. Dobbins. Though to be an early Longhorn favorite, J.K stood for Just Kidding, went to Ohio State, started as a freshman, and notched over 1400 yards rushing at over 7 yards per pop.

Landing Keaontay Ingram in 2018 was some solace, but Texas Football is always more fun when Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Jamaal Charles and Cedric Benson types of talents are toting the rock.

For Texas to win, Tom Herman needs to rebuild infrastructure across the board. For Texas to win big, he’ll need to start landing players like Zach Evans.

The 2018 Burnt Orange Bible dedicates over twenty pages to evaluating the 2018 recruiting class and breaking down the 2019 class (courtesy of IT recruiting analyst Eric Nahlin), in addition to providing the best Longhorn football preview on the planet. Give it a read.

[Trailer] Jason Momoa Delivers an Underwater Ass Whooping in James Wan’s ‘Aquaman’ #SDCC

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

wat?

[Aquaman] plays more like a science fiction fantasy film than a traditional superhero movie.” – James Wan.

It goes without saying that DC’s cinematic universe hasn’t exactly been firing on all cylinders, but with James Wan in the director’s chair for this year’s Aquaman, we’re thinking there’s a good chance the Jason Momoa-starring film will help course correct the universe a wee bit. Still though, we had been waiting on a trailer to start getting full-on excited about this one.

Out of Comic Con today, it’s here. And it’s looking like Wan isn’t letting us down.

Wan’s Aquaman looks like a beautiful underwater adventure, quite unlike anything we’ve seen from superhero cinema before. It’s also loaded with sea monsters, many of them piloted as deadly vehicles – and yes, it’s as cool as it sounds. Patrick Wilson as the film’s villain, Aquaman’s half-brother Orm, is the icing on top of what promises to be a tasty treat.

Crank up the volume and dive in!

From Warner Bros. and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

The film also stars Amber Heard (“Justice League,” “Magic Mike XXL”) as Mera, a fierce warrior and Aquaman’s ally throughout his journey; Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (“Platoon,” “Spider-Man 2”) as Vulko, council to the Atlantean throne; Patrick Wilson (“The Conjuring” films, “Watchmen”) as Orm/Ocean Master, the present King of Atlantis; Dolph Lundgren (“The Expendables” films) as Nereus, King of the Atlantean tribe Xebel; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Netflix’s “The Get Down”) as the vengeful Black Manta; and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (“The Hours,” “Lion”) as Arthur’s mom, Atlanna; as well as Ludi Lin (“Power Rangers”) as Captain Murk, Atlantean Commando; and Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones,” “Green Lantern”) as Arthur’s dad, Tom Curry.

Wan directs from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (“The Conjuring 2”) and Will Beall (“Gangster Squad,” TV’s “Training Day”), story by Geoff Johns & James Wan and Will Beall, based on characters from DC, Aquaman created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger.  The film is produced by Peter Safran and Rob Cowan, with Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada serving as executive producers.

The film is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2018, in 3D and 2D and IMAX.

We’ve Got a Fresh Batch of Images from Insane Nic Cage Film ‘Mandy’

by John Squires

alright... its well documented that i am no fan of the internet's obsession with "OMG its nic cage in/on [insert literally anything]," but this shit looks bonkers and i'll probably check it out.

We absolutely cannot wait for the Cage Rage that’ll be unleashed in Panos Cosmatos‘ upcoming Mandy, wherein a chainsaw-wielding Nicolas Cage seeks revenge on a sadistic cult in the 1980s. Last month’s trailer totally won us over, looking like Dario Argento directed his own take on Hellraiser and added in Cage as a badass Cenobite-slayer.

Check out a new batch of images below, while you wait for this madness.

In Mandy

“Pacific Northwest. 1983 AD. Outsiders Red Miller and Mandy Bloom lead a loving and peaceful existence. When their pine-scented haven is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand, Red is catapulted into a phantasmagoric journey filled with bloody vengeance and laced with fire.”

The cast also includes Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Ned Dennehy and Olwen Fouéré with Richard Brake and Bill Duke.

Panos Cosmatos wrote the script with Aaron Stewart-Ahn.

Mandy arrives in theaters on September 14.

Ex-Visceral Creative Director Laments ‘Dead Space 4’

by Pat Torfe

To say that it still stings that Dead Space developer Visceral Games is gone (and along with them for the time being, the Dead Space franchise) is an understatement. It’s a sad reality of the industry when your game underperforms and your owner decides to cut its losses. There’s still that lingering question of “what if?”. Well, in an interview with Eurogamer, former creative director at Visceral Ben Wanat discussed just what the team would do had Dead Space 4 been given the green light.

For starters, Wanat talks about how after Dead Space 3, humanity would be on the verge of extinction thanks to the Necromorphs. As a result, the gameplay in Dead Space 4 would be more focused on the non-linear aspect of exploration that was touched on in DS3. “The notion was you were trying to survive day to day against infested ships, searching for a glimmer of life, scavenging supplies to keep your own little ship going, trying to find survivors,” explains Wanat. “The flotilla section in Dead Space 3 hinted at what non-linear gameplay could be, and I would have loved to go a lot deeper into that. I figured you’d start in a section of space, maybe following a trail of ship carcasses to an orbital station you think might have the parts and fuel needed to get your ship Shock-capable.” (In the Dead Space universe, the ShockPoint Drive was a means of interstellar travel invented by an astrophysicist named Hideki Ishimura.)

Speaking of those abandoned ships, Wanat says that the opportunity to go from ship to ship scraping up supplies would’ve opened the creative doors for the team to go crazy in terms of creating some interesting environments. “The ships you would visit are where the game would get really diverse. The Ishimura had some inkling of that diversity with the variously themed decks. But imagine an entire roster of ship types, each with unique purposes, floor plans, and gameplay. Our original prototypes for the Dead Space 3 flotilla had some pretty wild setups that I wish we had been able to use.”

As for the weapons system, Dead Space 4 would’ve revisited the crafting system introduced in DS3, which in his opinion, took away from the synergy that made the weapons special. “I think in our exuberance to really lean into Isaac’s mechanic background, we managed to diminish that synergy with the Dead Space 3 crafting system. I love that it gave players creativity in putting together their weapons, but it became very difficult to tune when you allowed players to break the primary and alt-fire pairings. There would have needed to be a focus on re-perfecting the weapon balance while still giving players plenty to tinker with.”

And then there’s the topic of series protagonist, Isaac Clarke. The ending of Dead Space 3 left the door open for Isaac, Carver or Ellie to take on the Necromorphs, or even have an entirely new character at the helm. “With the apocalypse, there was the opportunity for a clean break,” Wanat said. “It wouldn’t be necessary for the story going forward to include any of them.” In his view, however, Wanat said he’d have loved to do a game with Ellie at the helm and had always “imagined her as the protagonist of Dead Space 4“.

To read the rest of the interview, including Wanat’s opinion on the future of (if any) Dead Space instalments, you can check out the link above.

'RSS Has Already Won'

still dont understand what happened to rss

Brian Schrader, an independent software developer, writes: It's been a little over 5 years since Google Reader shut down and the world of RSS readers was tossed into the junk drawer of collective memory. But, looking back on it today, I'd actually argue that RSS and Feeds as a whole never really disappeared, only the Feed Readers did. In building Pine, and as a long time Feed Reader user, I've been pleasantly surprised over these last 5 years to see that most sites still have RSS feeds. Sure, Facebook and Twitter don't support them, but YouTube, Reddit, Squarespace, Wordpress and so many more do by default. Feeds of all kinds still exist, nearly forgotten, in the markup of most websites, and this means that Feed Readers can, and will, make a comeback someday. The foundations are already laid; the hard work is done. RSS Feeds became a standard, and were built into the tools we use to make the web today. It's almost as if we laid the tracks and built the trains for a trans-continental railroad, but we've just forgotten how to sell tickets.

This nonsense of earning a living

by Jason Kottke
Emahlstadt

and here i thought i was ahead of my time...

From a 1970 issue of New York magazine, Buckminster Fuller on the massive economic lever of technology:

We must do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Malthusian-Darwinian theory, he must justify his right to exist. So we have inspectors of inspectors and people making instruments for inspectors to inspect inspectors. The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them they had to earn a living.

That was written almost 50 years ago…the capability of technology to generate wealth has increased greatly since then.

Star Wars fans only really want to know more about the universe than their friends, says EA’s Jade Raymond

by Sherif Saed
Emahlstadt

best part of this article is the droves of butthurt star wars fans in the comments. when you read the guy's quote, he's not even trying to be condescending, he's just saying this is what they've learned from interacting with star wars fans for years.

Since acquiring the Star Wars license in 2013, EA has learned a great deal about Star Wars fans and their desires.

Jade Raymond, head of EA’s Motive studio, also manages the overall Star Wars strategy for the publisher. Motive itself is working on a Star Wars project, but it’s the insight Raymond shared as a manager of the brand that’s interesting.

Speaking at Develop in Brighton this week, Raymond said that meeting Star Wars fan expectations and being as authentic to the world as possible are both very important factors in creating successful Star Wars games.

But there’s another, bizarre reason why fans choose to engage with Star Wars games to begin with, according to Raymond.

“And actually, interestingly enough, the number one motivator for either fans of playing Star Wars games or looking to participate in the Star Wars universe in any way is to become the number one fan,” she told attendees, as reported by Eurogamer.

“So, basically, to beat their friends at Star Wars trivia.”

As strange as it sounds, Raymond said that playing these games and picking up bits and pieces about the Star Wars universe through them allows fans to “lord over my friends because I knew this and you didn’t.”

“I know it seems funny, but we’ve spent a lot of time talking to Star Wars fans and Star Wars gamers, and that’s the number one motivator for everyone: learning more so they can be the number one expert.”

At the talk, the veteran studio head also touched a little bit on how the company decides which Star Wars games it wants to work on: by taking pitches from developers all around EA.

“Each studio pitches what game they want to make. My role is looking across those pitches, how can we line them up? Obviously, we don’t want to be releasing four Star Wars games in one year,” she explained

“We don’t want to have all our games be Jedi games. It would be good to have some that are focusing on different types of gameplay and different player fantasies.

“Star Wars is great because you can do a Boba Fett game or a bounty hunter game or a scoundrel game or a Jedi game. There are so many different actions for gameplay and different types of characters we could develop, so there’s a lot of room.”

Motive took over development of Amy Hennig’s Star Wars project, after EA rebooted it with less of a focus on linear storytelling.
