Video Premiere: BODY COUNT's 'Bum-Rush'

Emahlstadt

ice-t is 62 years old

"Bum-Rush", the new music video from BODY COUNT, the metal band fronted by hip-hop legend, actor and director Ice-T, can be seen below. The clip was shot in New York as well as Los Angeles and it was produced and directed by Jay Rodriguez for Itchy House Films. The New York footage was shot by Eric Mittleman. "Bum-Rush" is taken from BODY COUNT's seventh studio album, "Carnivore", which will be released on March 6 via Century Media. BODY COUNT's second album for Century Media continues the path of its uncompromising and critically acclaimed predecessors, "Bloodlust" (2017) and "Manslaugther" (2014), in pairing Ice-T's impassioned and socio-critical lyrics with thick guitar riffs and nods to metal and hardcore greats like SLAYER, METALLICA, PANTERA, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. Bangers like "Thee Critical Beatdown", "The Hate Is Real" and the title track will please old-school BODY COUNT fans, while "Colors" is a killer metal version of Ice-T's 1988 hit single of the same name. With MOTÖRHEAD's classic "Ace Of Spades", BODY COUNT is again paying tribute to one of its major musical influences. "When I'm Gone" shows a new side of BODY COUNT and features guest vocals by Amy Lee (EVANESCENCE). Other guest musicians include Dave Lombardo (ex-SLAYER), Jamey Jasta (HATEBREED) and Riley Gale (POWER TRIP). "Carnivore" will be available as a digipak CD, as gatefold LP+CD (including bonus track) and as limited 2CD box set (including three bonus tracks, the instrumental version of the album, a BODY COUNT beanie, a metallic pin and a poster featuring the fantastic cover artwork created by Zbigniew M. Bielak). "Carnivore" track listing: 01. Carnivore 02. Point The Finger (feat. Riley Gale) 03. Bum-Rush 04. Ace Of Spades 05. Another Level (feat. Jamey Jasta) 06. Colors (2020) 07. No Remorse 08. Uncharted won't be the only well-known game franchise receiving a movie adaptation in the near future. Lionsgate has revealed that Hostel director and Inglourious Basterds star Eli Roth will direct the Borderlands movie, with production starting later in 2020. Most of the details aren't known (including the basic plot), but Roth said he was happy with the script as well as the support from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who's also one of the executive producers alongside Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick.

85-77

This is not an article I will enjoy writing. I am not generally a person who gets a kick out of advocating for a person to lose their job because I understand the impact it has. Being fired means this person will have to uproot their family and relocate in whatever town will hire them. They have to put their kids into new schools, the kids have to find new friends, utility bills have to be sorted out, homes have to be bought and sold; it’s a lot. This happens not just to the head coach, but in all likelihood the three assistant coaches and a number of support staff. Advocating for a coaching change is advocating for a major disruption to a lot of lives.

38-53

There needs to be a rational view of the situation, one not swayed by an individual performance in a 30+ game season or even - in most instances - a single season in a tenure. 90% of D-I programs have ups and downs, talent cycles which peak and ebb, and not every season is going to end in March Madness. Coaches deserve a mulligan once in awhile if they’re performing well overall, even Roy Williams misses the NCAA Tournament here and there. Consideration needs to be given to the whole picture, including off-court issues such as graduation rates and whether the men in their charge stay out of trouble. These are all valid variables in the equation, all things that must be considered.

2-4

Injuries are as often as not freak occurrences; no amount of preparation can keep Jase Febres’ knee from bending the wrong way going for a loose ball, no stretch can 100% prevent a Kamaka Hepa high ankle sprain, and even responsible lifting programs created by a strength & conditioning coach with a Masters in sports biomechanics can’t guarantee Jericho Sims will make it through the season without injuring his back. High-major college basketball involves elite athletes pushing their body to the limit over and over again, and being on the bleeding edge means injuries are inevitable. They aren’t Shaka Smart’s fault.

0

These are some of the defenses you are likely to hear from the people who believe Shaka Smart deserves a sixth season. They are all valid points, and they deserve to be listened to. If an athletic director is making an informed decision on whether or not to retain a staff, he or she must take the pros and the cons into account and judge them accordingly. The athletic director is making a multi-million dollar decision, not just with the head coach but all of the resources that must be allocated to searching for and vetting a replacement as well as the bureaucratic energy devoted to onboarding a new hire who will be one of the highest-paid employees in the state of Texas. This is not a decision to be made lightly, and it is not as black and white as we may like to believe from the outside.

1

I came into this season believing a couple of things:

  1. This is finally, truly Shaka Smart’s team. There are zero players from Rick Barnes left on the squad, so every player who is (or is not) on the team is a statement of what Shaka Smart believes constitutes a successful team. These are his choices, they are - to the extent a coach can control recruiting - the players he wanted here in year 5. This is the Shaka Smart control sample, the team with the fewest variables from the tenure proceeding Shaka Smart.
  2. The performance of this team will be a good barometer for the next two years because there are no seniors, so what happens this year will portend (for better or worse) what we can reasonably expect in 2020-2021. If this team does not succeed, there isn’t a lot of reason to expect largely the same roster and coaching staff to significantly outperform next year. Greg Brown committing to Texas would alter this somewhat, but the house can only be built so high if the foundation is not very solid.

85-77 overall

38-53 against Big 12 opponents

2-4 in the Big 12 Tournament

0 NCAA Tournament wins

1 winning record in Big 12 conference play

These are the totals during Shaka Smart’s tenure as of today. There is little reason to believe they will meaningfully change in the last 6+ games of the season, and there is less reason to believe next year things will be meaningfully better. Shaka Smart has made a number of well-reasoned changes over the years to address issues as they arise; Neill Berry and Luke Yaklich were good hires at the time and in their first year we saw improvement from each side of the ball. It wasn’t enough. Other than one 11-22 season, Shaka Smart’s tenure has been defined by an ability to get nearly where they need to be but never actually get there. I do not believe he will get over the hump in Year Six, or Year Seven, or Year Eight.

1-10 vs Kansas Jayhawks

2-9 vs Baylor Bears

The dataset is in front of us, the sample size is large enough to draw conclusions. This is not where Texas fans want to be, it is not where Texas basketball should be peaking; two NCAA Tournament bids in 5 years, zero wins, one win in 11 tries against Kansas. These are not acceptable results. No matter how good a person Shaka Smart is, no matter how much he truly believes in building men instead of simply churning out players, at the end of it all he and his staff are paid to win basketball games.

I wish Shaka Smart and his family well, I hope he finds a new place to start fresh and can build a program that succeeds at the level his new fanbase desires. I still believe he is a good coach and that somewhere down the road he will be at the helm of a successful high-major program, but his tenure here should end in March.

It’s time.

Texas opens 2020 season with 7-4 win over Rice

by Anthony Rizzo
Emahlstadt

fuck yeah, let's wash this basketball season out of our mouths

Twitter: @TexasBaseball

Zach Zubia, Murphy Stehly, and Trey Faltine all hit home runs on opening night.

The Texas Longhorns put up a crooked number of runs (3) in the 3rd inning and scored at least one run in five different innings on their way to a 7-4 victory in tonight’s season opener against the Rice Owls. Behind offensive firepower via the long ball and a solid start from Bryce Elder, Texas took control of this game early on and never looked back.

Orange Coast College transfer and starting third basemen Murphy Stehly led the way for the Longhorns offense in this one. While hitting from the No. 9 spot, Stehly went 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run and a double — he was a triple shy of the cycle.

Stehly, who spent the past two seasons playing under the late John Altobelli at OCC, is wearing the No. 14 jersey in honor of his former coach. Stehly hit .374 as the team’s leadoff hitter under Altobelli last season.

Fittingly, senior Duke Ellis opened the season with a triple off the opposite field wall to get things started for Texas in the top of the 1st. On the following at-bat, fellow senior Zach Zubia drove in Ellis on a sacrifice fly to put UT up 1-0 early — the Owls right fielder made a diving catch to rob Zubia of an extra-base hit.

After going down 1-2-3 in the 1st, Rice took advantage of poor control on the part of Longhorns starting pitcher Bryce Elder and took a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning. Elder hit 3 (!) batters in the inning and had to pitch himself out of a bases loaded jam to avoid further damage.

Led by Zubia, who slugged a two-run opposite field home run in the top of the 3rd inning with two outs, Texas answered right back with three runs to take a 4-2 advantage.

As the team’s catalyst hitting from the No. 3 spot, Zubia had a great night at the plate. The first basemen drove in three runs. While playing first base, Zubia had an up-and-down performance in the field. He dropped a pop up for an error, but also made an athletic defensive stretch play to secure the first out of the 9th inning.

True freshman shortstop Trey Faltine notched his first collegiate hit in a big way. Faltine turned on an 0-2 breaking ball and hooked the pitch inside the left field foul pole for a solo home run.

The Longhorns pegged Rice starting pitcher Alex DeLeon for six runs throughout his four innings on the mound.

After struggling with command early on, Elder eventually settled in and powered his way through six innings of work on 84 pitches before Cole Quintanilla relieved him in the 7th. Elder struck out six batters and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in a winning effort tonight.

Aside from giving up one run in the 8th, the back-end of the Longhorns bullpen did their job to keep Rice out of striking distance. Redshirt senior Donny Diaz shut the door on the Owls with a pair of strikeouts in the 9th to earn the save.

Impressive 1-0 start for manager David Pierce and his ballclub.

Both teams will be back in action at Reckling Park for game two tomorrow evening at 5:00 p.m. Central. The series finale is at 1:00 CT on Sunday.

You can catch the rest of this weekend’s opening series on C-USA TV or can listen along on the Longhorn Radio Network.

After failing to make the postseason and finishing last in conference play last season, this year’s Texas baseball team enters year four under Pierce with new-look expectations. By adding two former MLB legends in Troy Tulowitski and former Longhorn pitcher Huston Street to the staff, along with returning four hitters from 2018’s Omaha team and bringing in the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, all the pieces seem to be coming in place at the right time for this program. As always, Omaha remains the goal for Pierce and this squad.

Sony points players to microtransactions with “in-game resource surfacing platform” patent

by James Billcliffe
Emahlstadt

"The wording of this suggests that the platform could surface adverts for microtransactions during cutscenes for single-player games, even on your first encounter with them."

great. just what everybody wants.

Sony has filed a patent for an “in-game resource surfacing platform” which suggests tips, strategies, and purchasable items to players based on their situation in a game.

The patent lists a variety of implementations for how the platform could work, with some versions cross-referencing a player’s game data with other users who’ve completed the same objective, while others include a “request to access a virtual store that enables the player to select resources for use while playing”.

As noted by All Gamers, this could lead to players being pushed towards microtransactions while playing.

Based on mock-up documents included with the patent, this could include on-screen pop-ups during gameplay which point players in the direction of “resources”. According to the patent, these resources “may be downloadable content (DLC), add-ons, upgrades, items, tips, strategy, communal data, etc”.

One mock-up in particular shows a sketch of Kratos and Atreus meeting the World Snake Jormungandr in God of War (2018). A large box in the bottom right corner shows a further sketch of Kratos with the text: “Choose resource E. Based on our simulations, you will have an [sic] 90% probability of defeating Boss X on your first attempt”.

The wording of this suggests that the platform could surface adverts for microtransactions during cutscenes for single-player games, even on your first encounter with them.

You can read the patent for yourself and view all accompanying documents on Patentscope – although it’s tough going.

This isn’t the first time the Sony family of companies has filed patents related to advertising. In 2012, it submitted plans for adverts where – and I’m not making this up – you had to stand up, praise the sun, and shout out a brand name to close an ad.

While in the wider world of gaming, other companies have also explored ways to use data to nudge players towards spending more money on microtransactions.

In 2017, Activision Blizzard lodged a patent to use PvP matchmaking as a way to influence players into spending more on microtransactions. New players would be put up against high-skill big spenders in the hopes that they’d want to buy more stuff to play with the big kids.

Sony is gearing up to release the PS5 in the near future. Here’s everything we known about the PS5 so far.

Foster is expected to be back for summer conditioning

Texas Longhorns safety BJ Foster is expected to be out for the spring as he undergoes surgery on the shoulder he injured last year, head coach Tom Herman announced today.

Foster is expected to return by the time summer conditioning rolls around. His doctors prolonged the date as they waited for his shoulder’s nerves to calm down for surgery.

As a sophomore in 2019, Foster logged 22 tackles, 12 assists, 1.5 for a loss and one interception.

Once he’s recovered, there’s a chance Foster could return to the nickel if he wins the job over redshirt junior Josh Thompson, as Burnt Orange Nation noted this week.

Regardless, under new defensive coordinator Chris Ash’s leadership, the Texas Longhorns are stacked at the safety position, with Caden Sterns and Chris Brown likely starters.

Nintendo unboxes the 'Animal Crossing' Switch you can't buy yet

by Jon Fingas

Nintendo's Animal Crossing Switch is still more than a month away, but that isn't stopping the gaming giant from teasing would-be buyers. It recently posted an unboxing video that shows you what to expect if you pick up the special edition console. There aren't too many surprises, although it helps point out little touches like the color-matching Joy-Con straps and the ever-so-slightly textured pattern on the back of the system. This probably won't convince you to buy the Switch if you weren't already inclined, but it could whet your appetite if you were just waiting for Tom Nook and crew to reach the hybrid system before jumping in.

PSA: Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available for pre-order on the eShop, and you can use a game voucher on it

by Elizabeth Henges

maybe a system-seller for amelia

That’s alright, you can now (finally) pre-order and pre-load Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Nintendo eShop. Even better, if you have a game voucher from an old promotion, you can use it on the upcoming title.

You might be asking “what’s a game voucher?”, and no one would blame you for that. Last year, Nintendo ran a limited-time offer where Nintendo Switch Online users could buy two game vouchers for $99.99. Each voucher could be redeemed for select digital Nintendo Switch titles, effectively earning you $10 off the game. The original list included a range of first-party Nintendo titles as well as a few select third-party titles, but the vouchers could also be used on some pre-orders.

So people bided their time, and held onto their vouchers until Animal Crossing: New Horizons popped up on the eShop. The voucher does apply to the game, so those that waited can effectively save $10 on a digital copy of New Horizons, which is likely the only deal we’ll see on the title for a good while. Granted, even if you don’t have a voucher, Animal Crossing with its small daily tasks makes for a good digital title in general–you don’t need to mess with switching carts all the time!

Of course, if you’re planning to go digital, you’ll need a micro SD card to store it–the Switch doesn’t have a lot of internal memory. You can grab a SanDisk Micro SD card for just $34.99 at Amazon US, which will easily store Animal Crossing and other titles. If you still need an actual Switch still, an Animal Crossing Switch model was announced, and it’s pretty nice looking to boot.

If you really want a physical copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons you can grab a copy from Amazon US or Amazon UK.

Where Do White Buckets Fit in With “Craft?”

by Jeff Alworth
Emahlstadt

thoughtful writeup

In the forthcoming episode of the Beervana Podcast, we have Nat West of Reverend Nat’s cider on to discuss the phenomenon of seltzer. He’s got a supermarket cider brand called Cascadia that just released a seltzer, and he talked forthrightly about how these drinks are developed and produced.

An industrial-age product, seltzers exist because humans have learned out to create flavorings that taste like other things. Nat described the white buckets these products come in, puncturing any romantic ideas we might have of the “mango” and “key lime” of the labels. No fruit is ever harmed in the production of a vat of seltzer.

Near the end of the podcast, I gingerly asked Nat a question about how he feels making seltzer. (His, incidentally, is made from fortified apple juice and has a more natural flavor than many of the more synthetic brands.) Is it a “crafted” product, I asked.

Before we come to an answer, we should acknowledge seltzer’s beery doppelgänger, which has a very different reputation: milkshake IPAs and pastry ales. When brewers make 100,000 barrels of grapefruit IPA, they’re not using California fruit—it’s all white bucket grapefruit. When they make sorbet IPAs and ice cream pales or banana split and blueberry muffin sours, they’re using white buckets. My sense is that it’s usually a blend—some fruit, some natural flavoring (vanilla, chocolate), and then processed flavorings to make the beer taste exactly like that treat they’re recreating in liquid form.

Adjustments.jpeg

And most beer, in fact, benefits from industrial-age chemistry, like salts, acids, enzymes, stabilizers, clarifies, and so on. Craft breweries, which we otherwise consider wholly traditional, use these, too—not just larger ones. So if we adopt a purist, no-white-buckets vision, it’s worth noting how little beer out there will actually meet this standard.

So where does the craft lie? Coincidentally, I happened to mention to a friend we were doing the seltzer podcast and added that I didn’t much care whether we got “good” ones or not. He was a little offended and considered that close-minded of me. Indeed, it is literally my job to keep an open mind when I approach new things—categorical dismissal isn’t generally regarded as an asset (cf glitter beer).

It’s good to interrogate ourselves in those uncomfortable gray areas. I did a Twitter poll asking about flavorings and the general sense seemed to be flavored beer was permissible somehow while seltzer just wasn’t. It’s productive to ask why we might think that—is it because we’re old dogs who just don’t like this new trick, or because it’s because we hold an unexamined bias for beer over other flavored malt beverages or what? And why does just posing the question seem to make us tetchy?

For my own part, the line is fairly clear. Seltzers are creations of modern chemistry. They taste just as I imagined—some pleasant, some unpleasant, but all artificial in exactly that way other flavored products are. Mango White Claw and Cool Ranch Doritos? Yep, it’s all familiar.

It is absolutely fine to make a judgment about this category of food from an aesthetic perspective. One can enjoy Cool Ranch Doritos without trying to argue that they’re the equivalent of the paella I had last night at Pintxo here in Seattle. We can see that these things are categorically different and that one, which is composed of the flavors of whole food, spices, and process, is more complex and aesthically appealing than the other, where the flavors came from a bucket.m. We can admire and elevate the hand that executed it over the food processors who created the flavorings to imitate ranch dressing on a tortilla chip.

It’s possible to hold two views that exist in tension at the same time. Seltzers have only the flavor of white buckets in them, and every hint of process and ingredient has intentionally been wring out of them. You’re only supposed to taste the flavoring. I don’t think it’s close-minded to judge that as an inferior expression of the gastronomic arts. And acknowledging that doesn’t mean we don’t love a good bag of chips from time to time. Of course we do!

But it’s worth coming to clarity about where you sit on this question with regard to beer. Are synthesized flavorings something you’re willing to have in your beer, or do you want products where the only thing you taste come from ingredient and process? There’s no wrong answer, but increasingly, it’s going to be hard to avoid considering the question.

Antarctica is hotter than it's ever been

global warming alarmism in journalism is bad. climate change science is not tabloid fodder.

it'd be like if corona virus headlines made the thing sound like the onset of the zombie apocalypse. it's not the onset of the zombie apocalypse, and no one would take it seriously if that's what news outlets tried to make it out to be.

and yet, it needs to be taken seriously.

the biggest problem with climate deniers is articles like this, that help create them.

Coffee Shop Refuses an Order Until the Customer Removes His AirPods

it also takes at least twice as long to serve someone with their attention divided as such, so you're not just being an asshole to the person serving you, you're also being an asshole to everyone else in line. airpods are a disgrace.

At a Chicago coffee shop, "the cashier wouldn't take my order until I took off my AirPod!" complained a patron named Kevin. "And it was only in one ear! Am I the asshole here?" ZDNet's "Technically Incorrect" column shares the answer he got from the "Salty Waitress" etiquette columnist at a foodie site called The Takeout: She replied, in part: "I am trying hard here to give you the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps you were in the middle of a very important phone call/podcast/guitar riff that could not be paused for the 30 or so seconds it takes to order a cup of coffee. In which case, you very politely step aside to conclude your business and then order your coffee...." The Salty Waitress was undeterred in her resistance. She explained that if Kevin wanted to embrace technology, he could push off to Starbucks or Dunkin', order via an app and pick up his coffee without the burden of any human interaction. She then warmed to her theme, mustering a fine froth: "Because that's the thing, sweetie pie. THE CASHIER IS A HUMAN BEING! JUST LIKE YOU! Their role in your life may be temporary and functional, but they've got feelings and hopes and dreams and aspirations. And like you (probably) they would like your full and undivided attention while you ask them to perform a service for you." She explained that this is true for all service workers and should, indeed, work both ways. I was glad she said that, as I've had two visits to AT&T stores where the salespeople were wearing a single AirPod and listening to their own music.

“All mankind needs to become the monster he truly is… is being told he can.”

Showtime returns to the world of “Penny Dreadful” with the new spinoff “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” and the network has unleashed the official teaser trailer upon us today.

A spiritual descendant of the original “Penny Dreadful” story set in Victorian-era London, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. bummer. this is one of the few shows keeping the netflix subscription going these days.

Serial killers of all stripes are frolicking in the streets of America tonight, as Deadline announced that Netflix has allowed its options on the cast of David Fincher’s Mindhunter to expire—at least, for now. Listen To New PEARL JAM Single 'Dance Of The Clairvoyants'

Emahlstadt

weirdly not terrible with some strong-ass talking heads vibes going on.

PEARL JAM has released a new single called "Dance Of The Clairvoyants". The track, which can be streamed below, is taken from the band's much-anticipated eleventh studio album, "Gigaton", which is due on March 27 via Monkeywrench Records/Republic Records in the U.S. Internationally, the album will be released and distributed by Universal Music Group. Produced by Josh Evans and PEARL JAM, "Gigaton" marks the band's first studio album since Grammy Award-winning "Lightning Bolt", which was released on October 15, 2013. "I can't tell you how proud I am about this group of songs, " explains Jeff Ament. "As you know, we took our time and that benefited us taking more chances. 'Dance' was a perfect storm of experimentation and real collaboration, mixing up the instrumentation and building a great song, and Ed writing some of my favorite words yet, around Matt's killer drum pattern. Did I mention Mike's insane guitar part and that Stone is playing bass on this one? We've opened some new doors creatively and that's exciting." "Gigaton" track listing: 01. Who Ever Said 02. Superblood Wolfmoon 03. Dance Of The Clairvoyants 04. Quick Escape 05. Alright 06. Seven O'Clock 07. Never Destination 08. Take The Long Way 09. Buckle Up 10. Come Then Goes 11. Retrograde 12. River Cross "Gigaton" is available for pre-order now at PearlJam.com. "Making this record was a long journey," says Mike McCready. "It was emotionally dark and confusing at times, but also an exciting and experimental road map to musical redemption. Collaborating with my bandmates on 'Gigaton' ultimately gave me greater love, awareness and knowledge of the need for human connection in these times." "Gigaton"'s cover features Canadian photographer, filmmaker, and marine biologist Paul Nicklen's photo "Ice Waterfall." Taken in Svalbard, Norway, this image features the Nordaustlandet ice cap gushing high volumes of meltwater. In support of "Gigaton", PEARL JAM will embark on their first leg of North American tour dates in March and April. The 16-date tour kicks off on March 18 in Toronto, hits the "Fabulous" Forum on April 15 and April 16, and wraps with a two-date stint in Oakland April 18 and April 19. PEARL JAM's North American tour is in addition to the band's previously announced European summer tour.

[The Further] Canadian Hunters Recorded This Unexplained Howling Noise in Northern Ontario

by Samantha Schorsch

When Ontario hunter Gino Meekis, his wife, and their grandson went hunting in October of 2019, they captured a bizarre, eerie sound on camera, Wide Open Spaces reports.

None of the hunters have been able to identify the sound, which sounds extremely low pitched and almost metallic in its echo. Though Meekis emphasized they would have had enough time to escape if there was danger, once they heard the creature beginning to move, still bellowing the strange sound, his wife had enough and returned to the car with their grandson.

Meekis followed shortly after.

The footage has been shown to several biologists over the months. None have been able to identify what could possibly be making the sound, only that it could potentially be a large mammal, and one likely in a large amount of pain. You can listen to the eerie recording below.

Any thoughts on what could have been making this strange sound?

Yes, Bill Murray will be in Ghostbusters: Afterlife

gross.

thought bill murray was overrated already, but now, after having spent almost four years (!!!) at the chive, i can't even stand to see the guy's face.

Well, here’s something that you don’t see everyday: Dan Aykroyd was right about something. Back in November, he insisted that Bill Murray would return in some capacity for Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife—the new sequel to the original two movies that’s being made for the “real” fans, but not in a way that’s…
