BlackBerry Introduces First eHealth App
BlackBerry Ltd and NantHealth, a US healthcare technology company, have launched an eHealth platform for healthcare professionals to access cancer patients’ detailed genome data on the BlackBerry Passport smartphone to help make tailored treatment decisions.
The NantOmics Cancer Genome Browser comes after Blackberry took a minority stake in NantHealth earlier this year. The push into medical technology fits with BlackBerry’s aim to leverage its encryption and security expertise in sectors like healthcare where data must be highly-regulated.
“BlackBerry’s partnership with NantHealth illustrates how the mobile security and collaboration technology we are known for can be reimagined to create revolutionary applications across a variety of industries,” said Executive Chairman and Chief Executive of BlackBerry, John Chen.
The browser will allow physicians and other medical professionals to examine the details of a patient’s tumour and chromosome, and the individual genetic alterations which make each disease unique. The genome browser is fully encrypted to allow clinicians to securely access patient data as soon as it is available, wherever they are.
“NantHealth has quietly built the unique capability of placing a super-computer into the doctor’s hand at the point of care and in time of need,” said South African born CEO of NantHealth, Dr Soon-Shiong. “Now with BlackBerry’s partnership and through the power of the cloud and secure networks, the reality is we are now able to put dozens of supercomputers, through mobile devices, into doctor’s hands on a global basis.”
The browser will be demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January, and will be pre-loaded on BlackBerry Passport devices and available to the professional community in early 2015. The browser will also be available on certain other devices running on rival platforms, but secured by BlackBerry’s network.
