Winston the skateboarding bulldog is the coolest dog in Columbia Heights (or the world?)

by Andrew W
I've written a few times about the skateboarding dog in our neighborhood -- once because I found a random video and another time because Questlove of The Roots spotted him at 14th and W and took an Instagram of him. Since then I decided to find out some more, and while I didn't get many details, I did find a bunch of other awesome videos of him around the neighborhood. Enjoy!

And if you are Winston's owner, or know who that is, please email me! I'd love to talk to you.
Winston's owner got in touch with me, so stay tuned for more coming soon!

Zeke’s DC Donutz Closed in Dupont

by Prince Of Petworth

Zeke’s Grand Opening Feb. 21st at 2029 P Street, NW via Facebook

Yesterday ANC rep @KevDC tweeted:

“Shocked to learn Zeke’s DC donutz at 2029 P St NW is already closed !! #ANC2B”

On their facebook page the last entry was May 10th though fans write: “How long are you closed??” and “Miss you already, friends! Hope you can come back in another incarnation soon!”

2029 P Street, NW has had a bit of a rough patch over the last few years – it has housed a Tangy Sweet (closed July 2011), Tasti D-Lite (closed Aug. 2012), a tease/joke of Meatsicles coming soon (Jan. 2013), and briefly Cool Disco Donuts before changing to Zeke’s DC Donutz.

Friends of Columbia Heights Dog Park Looking to Improve 11th and Park Rd, NW Facility

by Prince Of Petworth

columbia_heights_dog_park

From an email:

We’ve formed a group called Friends of Columbia Heights Dog Park, to support improvements to and maintenance of the dog park at 11th & Park Roads NW. The park is currently a bit of an eyesore, and we want to fix that (as well as a number of safety and sanitation issues) by putting down a different ground material, building a double-entry gate, closing up areas where small dogs can escape, and creating enforceable rules and norms. The land is owned by WMATA, which makes doing this work on our own a little more challenging (we’re totally willing to do all the work, but need guidance and input from them to ensure they still have all the access they need to do what they do). We want to be able to go to them with a list of MANY supporters as part of our effort to get this done. So if you’re a dog owner who uses the park (or you don’t use it because you think it’s gross), and/or you’re a neighborhood resident who is interested in seeing the park get beautified and better maintained, please sign up at www.columbiaheightsdogpark.org.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Zoe

by ARLnow.com
Zoe Zoe Zoe Zoe Zoe

Meet Zoe, a lovable but sometimes mischievousness rescue dog, and this week’s Arlington Pet of the Week.

Here’s what Zoe’s owners had to say about her:

This is our dog Zoe, a 1.5 year-old mix who lives in Arlington. We adopted her when she was 3 months old from Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation right here in Arlington — she was found on the side of the road with her brothers and sisters, all very malnourished.

She was a little timid when we first got her, but she has long since forgotten her tough past and is now quite the pampered pup. She enjoys strolling through Clarendon and has learned which stores give out free dog treats. When Lululemon has their doors open, she strolls right on in and sits in front of the treat jar until someone gives her a treat (and then her owner is FORCED to go shopping for new Lululemon clothes!).

She also rules the roost at home. Her owners have come home to various destructions, including chewed kitchen cabinets and hardwood floors, a digested Kindle charger, and feathers covering the entire living room from ripped-apart pillows. Despite this, her owners are obsessively in love with her and can’t imagine life without her!

She would also like to know when James Hunter Dog Park in Clarendon is reopening (July -ed.), because she misses her playtime with all of her neighborhood friends! And her owners miss how tired and calm she gets after a long day playing at the dog park.

The Arlington Pet of the Week is sponsored by Dogma Bakery, which has locations at The Village at Shirlington (2772 S. Arlington Mill Drive) and the Lee Harrison Shopping Center (2445 N. Harrison Street).

Want your pet to be considered to be the Arlington Pet of the Week? Email steph@arlnow.com with a 2-3 paragraph bio and 3-4 photos of your pet. Each week’s winner receives a $25 Dogma gift card.

A Peek in Vendetta, H Street’s Italian Restaurant Coming Soon

Red Palace is now a fucking Italian restaurant? Go kill yourself

Upon closing the Red Palace, H Street nightlife developer Joe Englert announced that he’d replace it with Vendetta, a new Italian restaurant that was once slated for a different building up the street (those plans fell through).

We noticed that they recently added a new paint job and a garage door on the former Palace side, and we also peeked in the windows.

Franco's Prisoner Work Battalions

by Keir Clarke

During and after the Spanish Civil War General Franco created 541 forced labour battalions. Frankismoan Preso Batailoiei is a Google Map showing where Franco's forced labour battalions were put to work in the Basque region of Spain.

The map shows the locations where prisoners were used as slave labour to build roads, work in factories and /or on other construction projects. If you click on a map marker the information window provides details on the type of work the prisoners were forced to undertake, the number of prison staff and the dates of each forced labour project.

The map is in the Basque language.

Free Borracho show at the Pinch

by Metal Chris
V.w.verweij

Kristian!

Borracho at the Pinch

This Saturday, the 18th of May 2013, DC’s own stoner metal riff masters Borracho will be headlining a free concert at the Pinch in Columbia Heights! And this isn’t just any show, it’s also a beer release show! The awesome folks over at Port City Brewery, based in Alexandria, Virginia, have worked with the guys in Borracho to make the band their own signature beer! The Borracho Smokin’ Brown Ale is, as the name suggests, a smoked brown ale. The ale was made with an alcohol percentage of 6.66%, which is fitting for a metal band whose name translates from Spanish to mean a drunk or lush. The supply of this beer is extremely limited and won’t be sold in any stores. In fact it may be gone by the end of the night, so be sure to get out to this show if you want to try it. In addition to the beer being on draft at the show, there will also be lots of free prizes given out to people who attend. I’ll have a pair of tickets to see Kylesa at the Rock & Roll Hotel on June 19th up for grabs and there will be other prizes as well including merch from Borracho and Port City and also a growler (a 60 oz jug) full of the Borracho Smokin’ Brown Ale that one winner will get to take home! The growler is being provided by D’vines, an excellent beer/liquor/wine store also in Columbia Heights that even fills beer growlers on site.

So here’s some details about the show. Doors open at 8pm and it’s all ages. Obviously you’ve gotta be 21 with an ID to drink. The venue is called The Pinch (address and map here) and it’s in Columbia Heights, which is a pretty nice neighborhood in Washington DC. There’s street parking but unlike some of the hotter areas in DC, like U St and H St, the parking is pretty ample even on a Saturday night and since it’s a good area you don’t have to worry about your car. The Pinch is also metro accessible, you can take the yellow or green line to the Columbia Heights stop and the venue is about half a mile north on 14th Street from the station’s exit (see it on a map here). The Pinch has a pretty normal bar/restaurant upstairs but the show will be taking place in the downstairs level since that’s where the stage is. The stairs down are right by the front door, you can’t miss them. There’s also another bar downstairs so you won’t have to keep going back and forth all night.

There are going to be four stoner metal bands playing this free show and, in addition to Borracho headlining, there will be sets by Cortez from Boston, Wasted Theory from Delaware and the new project of Dave Sherman (of Earthride and Spirit Caravan fame) named Weed Is Weed from Maryland. You can check out any of those bands by clicking their names of course, and be sure to watch the awesome Borracho videos that I’ve embedded below. You can also get more info on the Facebook event page for this show here.
