Elegy in X Parts [My foreshadow stretches] by Matt Rasmussen

X.

My foreshadow stretches
out in front of me.

We stand on the soles
of each other’s feet.

I am a field
and there’s a man

standing in the middle
of me saying,

God is the sky pinning
me to my body.

I am a man
and there is a field

under me saying,
A dead man makes

love to the earth
just by lying there.

A Look Inside All Souls Corner Bar Opening Up “in the next few days” in Shaw

by Prince Of Petworth

IMG_2177
8th and T Street, NW

It’s been a long time coming but All Souls Corner Bar is finally opening up at the corner of 8th and T St, NW. Yesterday I spoke with owner David Batista who shares the good news that they got their Certificate of Occupancy and will be opening in the “next few days.”

It’s another incredible transformation of a derelict property:

2011_All_Souls_Neighborhood_bar_shaw_DC
October 2011

From their Facebook page:

“All Souls seeks to be a neighborhood bar. We’re not a sports bar, a gastropub, a wine bar, a speakeasy or a restaurant. We will be none of these things, yet we will have something for everyone. You will be able to find the craft beers of a gastropub and the interesting labels of a wine bar. If you prefer a cocktail it will be crafted with care and attention to detail. The food will be simple, but elevated, not your typical bar food. And you’ll be able to enjoy all of it while listening to good, eclectic music or watching the game quietly playing in the background.

With over thirty years experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry, our experiences range from serving beers in small bars to working alongside James Beard Award winning chefs. We have done it all from washing dishes to running multimillion dollar restaurants. Our experience working in restaurants is where our concept originates.

The basic premise of All Souls is to take restaurant quality service and adapt it to a bar setting. Attention to detail, friendliness and a commitment to serve the highest quality drink and food are the heart of what we want to do.”

bar

Batista tells me there will be 4 draft beers, 12 beers in cans and bottles and 12 wines in addition to a cocktail menu, which will feature the “classics with a twist.” As far as food is concerned, to start there will be a small sampling of snacks to include olives, nuts, cheese etc. and these options will expand a bit over time. But this is not a restaurant – it’s a proper corner bar. It’s incredibly refreshing to hear a place like this opening. No themes here just a very cool gathering spot. Additionally there will be a jukebox with an eclectic mix of soul, old soul, R&B, Rock and Jazz. Hours will be Mon.-Thurs. 5pm – 2am, Friday 5pm – 3am, Sat. 1pm-3am, and Sun. 1pm-2am.

I can’t freaking wait.

More photos after the jump.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Chloe

Our latest Pet of the Week it Chloe, a pitbull puppy adopted from Lucky Dog Animal Rescue.

Chloe’s most adorable feature is her propensity for sleeping upside down. Here’s what owner Melanie had to say about her:

Chloe is a seven-month old Pitbull rescue from Lucky Dog. I adopted her in June 2013. She is a lovable, friendly, sweet puppy who enjoys running at the dog park, which we go to every day. She loves being chased! However, she also enjoys chewing on a stick or a ball. She loves to go on walks and runs and will greet every dog AND human.

Chloe is a big snuggle bug who enjoys cuddling up next to you on the couch. She also enjoys sleeping upside down and totally sprawled out (see picture). Quite hilarious!

She has such a warm, positive energy and always seems to be smiling. I’m so happy I was able to give her a “forever home.”

The Arlington Pet of the Week is sponsored by Dogma Bakery, located at Shirlington Village (2772 S. Arlington Mill Drive) and, coming soon, a new location at 5157-A Lee Highway.

Want your pet to be considered for the Arlington Pet of the Week? Email office@arlnow.com with a 2-3 paragraph bio and at least 3-4 horizontally-oriented photos of your pet. Each week’s winner receives a $25 Dogma gift card.

Man Hit in Back of Head with Metal Pole Yesterday at 5pm by Teenagers in Hill East

by Prince Of Petworth

assault_hill_east

“Dear PoPville,

I live on 16th street SE, between east capitol and A SE. Last night my father in law went to get some milk at the Cupboard around 5pm.

Apparently as he walked on East Capitol he passed a group of teenage high schoolers (presumably from Eastern High School). One came up behind him and hit him on the head with a metal pole. [He is doing ok. Just needed stitches. He is very lucky that he was hit where he was, a couple inches over he may not be here with us.] The kid ran off and the others laughed and then dispersed as he made it back to our home afraid they would continue to attack him.

We had the police respond and they were unable to find anything at this point. I have often felt uncomfortable and harassed by high school age children in this area and now they are actually attacking people for fun.

There was no attempt to take any of his possessions, so this is just a depraved act similar to the knockout games.”

by Prince Of Petworth

brookland_monroe_st_market_busboys_and_poets

The big Brookland announcements keep on coming:

“The Bozzuto Group, a Greenbelt, MD-based real estate services company, today announced that renowned dining establishment Busboys and Poets will join Monroe Street Market’s exciting list of tenants. Monroe Street Market is a multi-phase, mixed-use development located on five city blocks in Washington, D.C., adjacent to the Brookland-CUA Metro station.

Scheduled to open Fall 2014, the 7,400 square foot restaurant will be located in Monroe Street Market’s Cornerstone building. The eatery will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner service, as well as a full bar, and will offer a fresh, handmade menu, complete with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. A children’s menu will also be available.

The Monroe Street Market address will be the sixth Washington, DC-area location for Busboys and Poets, with others located at 14th Street and V Street NW, 5th Street and K Street NW, Arlington, Hyattsville, and a Takoma venue coming Spring 2014. Each establishment showcases art work from local, national, and international artists, and hosts weekly events and performances.”
