Arlington Pet of the Week: Riley
This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Riley, a rescue pit bull mix who was depressed and skinny when he was adopted, but now is a proud “mama’s boy.”
Here’s what his owner, Justin, had to say about his pup:
Riley is a 2 1/2 year old American bulldog/pit bull mix. His owners adopted him from a rescue organization called Mutts Matter when he was 1 1/2 years old after seeing their profile of him as the Rescue Profile of the week on The Falls Church Patch. He was raised with his bff, a Chihuahua, and they were both surrendered together. The Chihuahua was adopted quickly but Riley wasn’t, so he got really depressed, stopped eating and lost a bunch of weight. When his owners saw him, they knew he needed a good home.
Now he is in a loving home where his owners shower him with love and attention. His favorite activities involve sleeping on the couch, sleeping in his bed and sleeping on the hallway rug. You always know where he is because he snorts like a pig non-stop, but he hardly ever barks. He loves going for walks with his owners in the evenings after work to explore the neighborhood and areas like Great Falls on the weekend where he sniffs everything.
Riley is very intelligent and responds to all commands. He will go to his crate when told, although his owners leave him out of it all day. He loves playing with his mom’s two little cousins who are 5 and 7 years old and his dad’s friend’s daughters who are 2 1/2 and 1 year old, and running around his grandma’s backyard. He is a good project partner, providing tons of snoring noises while you do work as he sleeps next to you. He puts up with his mom dressing him in costumes and clothes because he is a mama’s boy and follows her everywhere.

I care about earth’s environment. Is my dick biodegradable?
–Anonymous

Dear Normand Krieg of Crystal, ND,
No. Human dicks are non-biodegradable, and their improper disposal poses a serious ecological threat to our planet’s oceans.
I highly recommend that you speak with your probate lawyer about what to do with your dick after you’ve passed on. Most medical schools are happy to accept donated dicks for use as learning tools. Another option is willing your dick to the Arts–many struggling artists would be glad to “upcycle” your dead dick into beautiful and challenging installation art.
If you feel uncomfortable with passing your dick on to strangers, keep it in the family! Many people choose to have their deceased dicks bronzed or taxidermied, and incorporated into a “family dick tree” mural in their foyer. What better way to assuage the approach of death than to know that future generations of your progeny will gaze upon your old mummified dick as a cherished heirloom?

Arlington Pet of the Week: Romeo
This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Romeo, a 10-year-old Havanese who is “a true gentleman,” except to Capulets.
Here’s what Romeo’s owner, Amy had to say about her star-crossed critter:
Romeo, a 10-year-old Havanese, has lived with his family in Arlington since he was just a puppy. His name was chosen by one of his owners, who was studying “Romeo and Juliet” in her high school English class at the time.
Romeo is a fun-loving dog who is well-loved by his neighbors (dog and human) and is friendly to all. Romeo is almost always happy, especially when on long walks or chewing the ears off his stuffed animals (once the ears are destroyed, he generally loses interest in the toy). The only times you’ll catch Romeo distressed are during thunderstorms, when he usually takes refuge under a bed or chair, and after his summer trim, when he feels embarrassed of his shorter cut. He sulks around for an hour or so before he remembers that we love him regardless.
Overall, Romeo is quite the family man and a true gentleman. When there was a new addition to the family, Romeo often brought the baby his toys and left them as an offering at her crib. He also regularly brings his food to the foot of the table and eats with the family. We couldn’t ask for a better pup.

One of the good things about internet on the space station is it lets us see that astronauts are just as excited and amazed about being in space as the rest of us would be, and probably more. It is easy to start thinking that jobs that are important must also be joylessly done by Serious People.

No!!! DC’s most famous Dog, Romo, is moving from Adams Morgan

Photo by PoPville flickr user ekelly80
Sad, sad news via a commenter in this morning’s rant/revel from WTOP:
“But pretty soon, Romo will have a whole new view on life — quite literally. This fall, Bacon and Scourby will move out of their Adams Morgan apartment to a bigger space in “the burbs” — Arlington.”
Romo from Adams Morgan is understandably the most photographed dog to appear on PoPville. Farewell good pup.

Free Ice Cream Monday and Tuesday

Photo by PoPville flickr user gerdaindc
From an email:
“Climate change means out summers are getting too hot. So let’s cool off. Next week, The Climate Reality Project is giving away free Ben & Jerry’s in DC (and in three other cities) to raise awareness for climate action.
From July 29-31, the EPA will hear from the public on the proposed Clean Power Plan – a rule that attempts to reduce carbon pollution from power plants. One of the hearings will be here in DC.
These ice cream trucks will not only be handing out free scoops, but also serve as climate action centers that will raise awareness and gather support for climate action and the proposed EPA rule.
You can find the trucks on:
Monday, July 28 from 11am-4pm at the Capital South Station
Monday, July 28 from 4-8pm at Union Station
Tuesday, July 29 from 8:30am-1pm at the EPA Headquarters (William Jefferson Clinton East Building, 1201 Constitution Ave, NW)
Tuesday, July 29 from 1-6pm at the Freedom Plaza.”
Full press release after the jump.
“Nothing says summer heat like a melting ice cream cone. That’s why The Climate Reality Project is teaming up with Ben & Jerry’s to turn one of the celebrated symbols of the season into a rallying point for action in the face of rising temperatures driven by climate disruption.
As part of the I’m Too Hot campaign, Climate Reality will bring Ben & Jerry’s ice cream trucks to the four U.S. cities hosting Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hearings on the newly-proposed Clean Power Plan – Atlanta, Denver, Pittsburgh and Washington D.C. – from July 29 to August 1. The plan offers an historic opportunity to cut carbon pollution from power plants that is accelerating climate change. The highly visual I’m Too Hot trucks will help raise public awareness of this opportunity in a fun-filled way, enable locals to speak up in support of the plan, and offer supporters an icy treat for their efforts, courtesy of Ben & Jerry’s.
“We are excited to partner with Ben & Jerry’s to bring both ice cream and information about the EPA’s proposed rule to the people of Atlanta, Denver, Pittsburgh and Washington D.C.,” said Climate Reality Project President and CEO Ken Berlin. “This past May was the hottest in recorded history, and was an example of the kinds of records that will keep being broken as our summers get hotter from climate change driven by carbon pollution. These EPA hearings are a crucial opportunity for people to let the EPA know they support the agency’s efforts to reduce harmful carbon pollution, and we’ll be there to make sure our supporters don’t get too hot.”
If approved, the EPA’s Clean Power Plan would provide the first-ever national standards to limit the amount of carbon pollution existing power plants can produce – aiming to cut emissions by 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. The EPA estimates that the rule would provide significant economic and health benefits, including the prevention of 150,000 asthma attacks and 6,600 premature deaths annually by 2030 as well as the creation of 76,000 to 112,000 new jobs in 2025 by expanding the energy efficiency sector alone.
The EPA’s Clean Power Plan is open for public comment until October 16, 2014.
“The rule would be a critical step towards holding polluters accountable for the carbon pollution they dump into the atmosphere – but first, it’s up to us – the people – to make sure we support the EPA’s efforts and the rule becomes law,” said Berlin.
People visiting the trucks will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed EPA rule and tweet at the EPA (@EPA) and their elected officials about their support for the rule, using the hashtags #ImTooHot and #ActOnClimate.”
