Local Man Seeks To Turn ‘Snowflake’ From Political Insult to Point of Pride

by Chris Teale

The term “snowflake” has become one of the more widely-used insults in online political debates lately, and now an Arlington man is trying to adopt it as a badge of honor.

Ballston resident Michael Getter has begun what he describes as a campaign to unite opposition against President Trump and his administration’s agenda. To do so, he’s planning to manufacture “snowflake” lapel pins of different colors to represent particular issues.

And Getter said if the idea proves viable, proceeds from buying the snowflake pins will go to related charities and advocacy organizations that “have a proven track record and are effective.”

Getter says he was inspired by the opposition rallied at the Women’s March on Washington in January and the use of the word “snowflake” to show disdain for young people and their objections.

“It crystallized in my mind, that a snowflake might become a symbol not necessarily of the resistance, but basically for everybody who disagrees on different grounds with Trump and his administration,” Getter said. “Instead of hearing it as a derogatory term, we’ll learn that we’re all different.”

USA "snowflake" pin

Already, Getter has put together a list of more than 15 snowflake designs. Some are focused on issues like healthcare and immigration, while others are for those affiliated to a political party.

Getter said it was important to try and capture as many issues as possible, and be inclusive of all opposing viewpoints.

“Instead of lumping it altogether, saying, ‘Yes, we’re all one great mass,’ we’re not,” he said. “Different people have different interests. Some people are specifically interested in health care issues, some people want to stop wars, some people are interested in immigration issues, some are opposed to losing funding for the arts.”

The endeavor is set to ramp up as of May 1, which Getter said will mark the start of its Kickstarter campaign to raise initial funds.

Women's rights "snowflake" pin

Manufacturing the pins could prove costly, Getter said, as he wishes to have them made in the United States.

But he said he hopes his campaign will encourage unity among opponents of the Trump administration’s agenda.

“They have something they can be proud of, wear it and be part of a larger group that’s proud to be who they are, not ashamed of being called a ‘snowflake,'” he said. “I wanted to bring some unity and recognition, and make a statement. If you see another person on the street with a snowflake, you have an instant connection with that person, knowing they are on your side.”

Checking in on the New Sea Lion at the Zoo

by Prince Of Petworth

Thanks to Nancy for sending pics and the update on the baby sea lion pup:

“I was at the zoo yesterday, and wanted to share these pictures of a new addition to the Sea Lion family. She was so playful, and followed children’s hands along the glass. One person would toss their hat up in the air in front of her, and she would somersault in the water. A lovely addition to the zoo—I encourage everyone to go pay her a visit!”

UPDATE From the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service:

“As a side note, this falcon was seen before in DC last year. She in fact is not a pure peregrine falcon. She is a hybrid cross and most likely a lost falconry bird.”

Thanks to Hillary from POLITICO for sending these shots from last week “we watched this falcon tear apart a pigeon on our patio furniture for 30 minutes.”

If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey around town, lunching or otherwise, please send a photo and an email where you spotted it to princeofpetworth@gmail.com and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Lilly

by ARLnow.com
Lilly Pet of the Week Lilly Pet of the Week Lilly Pet of the Week Lilly Pet of the Week

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Lilly, a Wheaten terrier who loves playing in the water. Here is what Lilly’s owners had to say about her:

My husband, James, and I always had dogs growing up, so we expected that in the future we would have one of our own. When our name came up on a waiting list for a Wheaten terrier, we made the 5 hour drive to Holly Springs, NC to pick her up.

Her name is Lilly and she is now 8 months old. She lives in the Courthouse neighborhood of Arlington. We soon realized that even though we had dogs growing up, most of the care had fallen on our parents, so we are learning along with Lily. We learned that she loves her food but has to be carefully watched or she will supplement her diet with cigarette butts she finds outside of Four Courts. We learned that she is a casual walker who likes to stop after a few steps. She can be encouraged with chicken bits to move along. We learned that she is happiest when she is snuggled up against us and we’ve learned that dirty laundry is one of her favorite playthings. She loves the dog park, especially jumping in the pools and the water fountain.

It’s only been 6 months, but we cant imagine a day without her and we will continue to love and learn more about her.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Etta

by ARLnow.com
Etta Pet of the Week Etta Pet of the Week Etta Pet of the Week

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Etta, a Persian rescue cat who lives with her rescue brother and sister. Here is what her owner, Joni, had to say about her:

Good Morning My Fellow Arlingtonians! As you can see, I am enjoying a glorious, sunny afternoon on the porch with mom and dad. I found my parents — although they like to say they found me — at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and I was quite the mess! My previous owner passed away and her heirs didn’t want me because I was not a “show quality” Persian. But one glorious day, I knew I found my forever caregivers. They came and went but voila, two days later, I packed up and off we went to my forever palace! First thing’s first, a trip to the vet for a “well baby check-up” and then a much needed trip to the groomers to get rid of my matted fur and raccoon eyes. Persians require a lot of grooming which includes a daily eye cleansing and brushing but as you can see, I am sporting my Lion Cut! I live with my brother Nelson and sister Isabella (they are rescues as well) whom I chase around and frolic with… I also love to test out my dads gourmet cooking and enjoy learning about the stock market each morning.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Oliver

by ARLnow.com
Oliver Pet of the Week Oliver Pet of the Week Oliver Pet of the Week Oliver Pet of the Week Oliver Pet of the Week

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Oliver, a playful mutt who loves to please everyone. Here is what his owner, Mark, had to say about him:

Oliver is a short-haired Collie/Retriever mix who came to us via the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation of Arlington when he was an 8-week-old pup. He is now a 3.5-years-old, healthy as can be, little “dudeman.” His mother was a rescue and Oliver was born in the shelter, so he has been cared for with love and affection his entire life. We were looking to adopt a pooch for several months before finally meeting Oliver at a PetSmart adoption event. It was love at first lick!

Oliver’s temperament and playful attitude towards humans and dogs alike is a true blessing. He is very submissive and is eager to please. When it’s time to play, he wants to play. When it’s time to watch a movie and relax, he wants to snuggle up close and take it easy. We could not have asked for a more perfect dog for us.

Some of Oliver’s favorite activities include playing with tennis balls and racquetballs, puppy play dates and going anywhere so long as he is with mom and dad. Oliver has been a wonderful addition to our family and there is never a dull moment with such a playful, loving mutty-mutt in the house. We’ve heard comparisons to the Target dog and Wishbone (if you don’t know, it was a TV show from the 90’s), but regardless of whom he might resemble, you have to admit, he is pretty darn cute!

February 15th, 2017: Thanks to everyone who came out to say hi on the West Coast! It was great doing events in cities I'd never done them in before, and so many people came by to say they'd been reading Dinosaur Comics for 10+ years. CRAZY. So I wanted to say "thank you, you are awesome" and also "wow I can't believe you've let me in your brain for so long, wait putting it that way sounds creepy, sorry".

Arlington Pet of the Week: Kato

by ARLnow.com
Kato Pet of the Week Kato Pet of the Week Kato Pet of the Week Kato Pet of the Week Kato Pet of the Week Kato Pet of the Week

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Kato, a husky who loves hiking and the outdoors. Here is what his owner, Ani, had to say about him:

This is Kato, a Siberian Husky and on October 20, he turned 3 years old. He really loves to travel. His home in Arlington, VA is the 4th one he’s lived in and by far his favorite. He plans on sticking around for a while.

Kato absolutely adores hiking. His mom is a teacher in Arlington and one of the subjects she teaches is social studies! Kato volunteers to climb mountains and hike trails all over Virginia so his mom can show her students pictures of him in the places they’re studying. He really likes to show off for all of the students and even has his own hiking backpack to carry his food and water. Kato has never met a trail he didn’t like. He’s even passed some bears and snakes, but knows to keep his distance!

Kato also loves making new friends — human and dog! He is always ready to share some puppy kisses or give a paw-five for a treat. His favorite things in the world are sweet potatoes and belly rubs. He’s really excited to be Arlington’s Pet of the Week, so make sure you say hello if you ever see him outside!

Ready Arlington: A Storm on the Horizon Called HERricane Arlington

by ARLnow.com Sponsor
V.w.verweij

Oh, Arlington.

Ready Arlington banner

This biweekly column is sponsored by the Arlington Office of Emergency Management. The author of this post, Lauren Stienstra, is the Senior Manager for Research and Policy Development in the Arlington County Office of Emergency Management.

I took my first CPR class when I was 12. I was preparing to be a babysitter. I had taken classes, watched my neighbor’s kids, and was ready to finish my “résumé” and make some spending money. I loved it. In class, I liked learning how the body worked (and failed) and loved the idea that I could help save lives.

My stint in babysitting was brief — not because I was bored or particularly bad at it — but because it evolved into a summer job as a lifeguard, then a college job as an EMT, and eventually a career as an emergency manager here in Arlington. “Emergency Manager” was not my dream job as a 12-year-old, but the early exposure to the ideas and skills around emergencies started me down a path that would lead me to an incredibly fulfilling role and career in this community.

Website SliderThis was part of the motivation for launching a career development program that we’re calling “HERricane Arlington.” Not many women consider careers in public safety and we’re hoping to close some of those gaps. HERricane Arlington provides young women (ages 13-17) a chance to explore emergency management and allied fields through exciting activities and exercises. We’re trying to grow and support tomorrow’s public health nurses, meteorologists, and journalists to ensure that the future has a team that can handle hurricanes, derechos, and outbreaks.

So, if you know a girl who has ever wanted to learn how to use a fire extinguisher, wondered what to do after a tornado, or dreamed of being the journalist who reports the next big disaster, this could be the program they remember for the rest of their lives!

herricane-stats_924_904961afdd6caf019bbb24173061103f604c20c6Why HERricane Arlington?

  • Representation: Women are underrepresented in leadership positions in emergency management across the nation. They occupy 34% of staff-level positions and even fewer director-level ones.
  • Employment: Public safety jobs in Virginia grew 15% over the past decade and are expected to keep growing (13% by 2020!) making this a great career choice for many young women.
  • Empowerment: According to the United Nations Development Programme women are more likely to be victims of disaster, especially in regards to death, sexual violence, and loss of income. Equipping girls with disaster response skills will empower them to be able to help themselves and their communities after major incidents.

What is it, exactly?

HERricane Arlington is more than a weeklong camp, it’s a community. Graduates will be encouraged to continue to develop their skills through post-camp programming and mentoring throughout the following year.

Summer Camp: A jam-packed, week-long program exploring disaster response and leadership skills, including.

  • CPR
  • Storm spotting
  • Fire extinguisher training

The Aftermath: A series of monthly activities so graduates can continue to develop in the field of emergency management. Attend our activities, earn points, win prizes! Activities include:

  • Ropes course
  • Movie watch parties
  • 24 hours of community service alongside EM professionals

Mentorship and Early Career Support: Graduates of HERricane Arlington will be offered mentorship as well as internship and volunteer opportunities to launch them into meaningful careers.

Join the Storm!
