I got drunk on a cross-country flight with this guy. He was like 89 or 94, sitting next to me. I wasn’t going to drink, but then he got a drink and I figured why not. He was so cute, wearing a bow tie and a fancy suit. I saw his wedding ring and asked him how he met his wife. He said he was married to a guy, and I asked for that story, still thinking it’d be romantic. But he just said they were cruising for dick.”

Finally, the restaurant we’ve been waiting for.
Tallywackers is a new dining establishment coming to Dallas. Per a help wanted ad posted to Craigslist, it appears to be a bar and restaurant specializing in hot dogs and other phallic-shaped foods served up by a staff of half-naked hunks.
In other words: It’s the male equivalent to Hooters. And we’re sure it’s going to be a huge hit in the Oak Lawn geighborhood. How could it not?

The restaurant, which is billing itself as the “newest and most exciting place to be,” is currently hiring bartenders, servers, cooks, bus boys and hosts, and is expected to open some time next month.
Let’s just hope servers in super skimpy briefs don’t violate any health department regulations.

Darius Wadia"Who cares if the buildings collapse? We can't have a subway under our city!" I can't wait for Metro to drill right through the middle of town.

[Hawthorne K-8 school via Michael Locke]
Fourteen buildings across the five campuses of the Beverly Hills Unified School District are "subject to potential collapse" in an earthquake as small as a 3.5, according to a state report. BHUSD technically has most of the money it needs to update the schools, but last night the school board voted against using it; they also voted to immediately close three of the five school auditoriums in the district, including the auditorium at Beverly Hills High School, because the ceilings are potentially unsafe. This same school board is simultaneously at legal war with Metro because the agency plans to run a subway line under Beverly Hills High; they believe a subway tunnel will put students in grave danger (possibly from a terrorist attack) and have used about $8 million in school construction money to fight that battle.
BHUSD has known for years that its schools are seismically unsafe, but about six months ago, a California Seismic Mitigation Program report identified 14 buildings that are among the state's most unsafe schools (all five schools were originally built in the 1920s, with various upgrades or new buildings over the years). According to the Beverly Hills Courier, "Multiple experts have since told the BHUSD Board of Education that in the event of an earthquake above 3.5 on the Richter scale, depending on its epicenter, those 14 buildings are at risk of major structural damage including collapse. In that case, serious injury and even death can be expected."
In 2008, the school board passed Measure E, which authorized $334 million in school construction bonds. For some reason the board at the time promised voters that those bonds could be issued without raising property taxes, which are relatively low for the county. They already broke that promise once, in 2013, and so far have used $117 million in bond money, with $34 million left before they'll have to raise property taxes again (it would be a little over a dollar a day per property). But renovation estimates for all five schools total $450 million.
Aside from the urgency of the seismic report, the city's independent Finance Committee says the cost of the bonds will skyrocket if they're not sold now. There are also about $30 million in matching state funds the district can use if it gets to work on construction soon. After weeks of debate, the school board voted on Tuesday not to authorize any new bond money; board members who voted no are hoping instead to put an entirely new bond measure on the ballot in 2016, which would delay construction work. With a $450 million construction pricetag, BHUSD could use all $334 million of Measure E and still need a new measure, though.
The BHUSD has used its $117 million in a few ways. It's created designs for renovations at all of the schools and gotten to work on construction at Horace Mann Elementary School. And, according to a letter from school board member Lisa Korbatov, "$4 million was spent to clear two campuses of MTA inferred active faults (work we had no choice but to do). And, unfortunately, another $4 million was spent on consultants and attorneys to protect the sovereignty and sanctity of our only high school campus." Unspun, that's $4 million for geological reports claiming Metro has chosen the wrong subway route and another $4 million on anti-subway lobbying efforts.
To be fair, Korbatov and fellow rabid anti-subwayist Lewis Hall voted to approve the new bond money, so their "think of the children" stance is at least consistent. Board member Noah Margo voted against the money because he just doesn't believe the seismic report, telling the Courier "I don't believe anybody is in peril."
He also "did not agree that individual board members could be held legally liable for death or destruction from an earthquake if the Board submitted a replacement bond to voters," despite an email from BHUSD's general counsel saying exactly the opposite of that. Margo's take is that "As long as we're on the path to fix it, we are in compliance."
Meanwhile, the board also voted Tuesday to immediately close auditoriums at Beverly Hills High, Hawthorne Elementary School, and El Rodeo Elementary, "due to seismic vulnerability," according to the Courier.

What a difference a viral photo makes. After recreating Adam Levine’s classic Cosmo pose, trans activist and model Aydian Dowling has found himself in the lead for Men’s Health Ultimate Guy Search.
The mag is looking for a “a guy who is fit and fearless, a doer who gives back and leads by example” to grace its November 2015 cover. Dowling meets those criteria and then some, currently boasting nearly three times the number of votes than his nearest competitor.
“As a transgender male, having a healthy body and mind is my ultimate goal to find peace within my soul,” Dowling told Men’s Health. “Although I may always have some kind of battle with my body, I continue to work everyday for a happy peace within.”
Dowling is also spreading his fitness fanaticism in his hometown of Eugene, Oregon where he’s started training other trans males: “They have greatly progressed and I feel very proud to see their self confidence grow. I do nothing but support them and show technique, but drive is contagious!”

Darius WadiaThis was actually a great episode, if any of you watch The Good Wife. And if you don't, you should. And by you I mean Ryan.
Though it was filmed and written in February, episode 6 of "The Good Wife" feels as if it was planned in response to the "religious freedom" legislative controversies of the past week.
In lieu of an Indiana pizzeria, the episode tells the story of California baker, who refuses to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple.
Prominently featured in the episode is the character of Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski, above), a lawyer who is consulted for her opinion on reopening the case of the California baker. The debate goes back and forth, with level debate about the legal issues, and little talk of civil rights, but Lockhart is eventually unequivocal: "You're wondering whether to take up this baker's appeal? No, obviously," Diane says. "It's not because I'm a liberal, it's because you won't win."

Creators Robert and Michelle King attribute their timing to the writing team:
"I think it’s a combination of having a really good writers’ room. We have seven writers, and what they do all day is argue these issues. We’re part of the writers’ room too. But we’re all looking at the issues that we think are on the cusp of being subjects of debate at the family dinner table when the family gets together for Easter or Passover. What are they going to argue about? And you don’t want to get something that you’re too far behind the issue because then it’s reached its zenith in the zeitgeist. And then you’re kind of on the lower crest of it, or the facts change on the ground. Suddenly the issue that you thought was so hot has kind of cooled only because now it’s another issue. Our writers’ room is very good at doing things two months ahead"

Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams reunited over the weekend for a surprise performance at the Stellar Gospel Awards in Las Vegas reports Vh1. The group performed Alpha & Omega and the song Say Yes from Williams’ gospel album Journey to Freedom. Also, there are rumors the trio plans to officially reunite after 10 years for a tour and to record an album together, according to the Daily Mail, however, the three will not be touring or recording under the name Destiny’s Child.
Beyoncé’s father and former manager, Matthew Knowles, owns a quarter of Destiny’s Child and the trio have all confirmed they want nothing to do with him. The only way to tour and record an album without owing Knowles a single dime is to avoid using the former group’s name. The group’s 2005 Destiny Fulfilled tour grossed approximately $70.8 million in the U.S. alone and, according to Billboard, is the highest-grossing tour for either a pop or R&B band.

Darius WadiaYeah, ORRRRR, you could not keep your phone in your back pocket like an idiot.
To always be put on a pedestal as a hunk is slightly demeaning. It really is and it’s in the same way as it is for women. When an actor is seen only for her physical beauty it can be quite offensive. Well, it’s not just men that can be inappropriate sexually; women can be as well. I’m in a successful TV show in a kind of leading man way and it can sometimes feel like your art is being put to one side for your sex appeal. And I don’t like that. In this position you get asked a lot, ‘Do you like being a heart-throb? Do you like being a hunk?’ Well, my answer is, ‘That’s not what I got into it for.’”

Darius WadiaI really enjoy when people cite President Clinton, because the world is exactly the same as it was 20 years ago. Also, it's been a long time since Carly Fiorina ran for senate and her face still makes me angry.
The leading GOP contenders for the 2016 White House race have spoken out about Indiana's new "religious freedom" law and the #BoycottIndiana backlash - with all candidates supporting the law to varying degrees.
Find out exactly what each right-winger said to get a glimpse into how the debate over these "license to discriminate" proposals will likely play out over the coming election, AFTER THE JUMP...
Sen. Ted Cruz, the only officially declared candidate right now, came out swinging at a campaign stop in Iowa today:
"The Fortune 500 is running shamelessly to endorse the radical gay marriage agenda over religious liberty to say: 'We will persecute a Christian pastor, a Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi. "Any person of faith is subject to persecution if they dare disagree, if their religious faith parts way from their political commitment to gay marriage."
Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, meanwhile, took a more moderate position on gay rights but similarly blasted the business community's support for #BoycottIndiana:
The debate about gay marriage is really a debate about how the government bestows benefits and whether they should be bestowed equally. I believe they should. I also believe that people of religious conviction know that marriage is a religious institution with a spiritual foundation because only a man and a woman can create life, which is a gift that comes from God. We must protect their rights as well.
I hope that we come to a place in this country where we are prepared to have respectful differences and tolerate those two views. Religious liberty and tolerance are too important to our country.
It is frankly sad to me that politics has become a fact-free zone. It is sad that so many people on the left were quick to turn this into a divisive and destructive debate so they could further their own brand of identity politics. It is sad that CEOs took to Twitter before checking their facts, adding to the division instead of helping build tolerance.
This debate represents what so many believe is wrong with our politics. It has taken an emotional issue for people on both sides and politicians have used it to divide and to score points with their team.
It has been tough for some in the media to understand my position because I refuse to join the game of name calling and vitriol. Politics shouldn't be a game, however. We must find a way to respect one another, to celebrate a culture that protects religious freedom while condemning discrimination.
Jeb Bush, who earlier this week voiced his unequivocal support for Pence and the anti-LGBT "religious freedom" law, has since shifted his tone, The New York Times reports:
At the Four Seasons in East Palo Alto, Mr. Bush was asked by an attendee to clarify his position. He said that he supported protecting religious freedom and that it must be done specifically in each state.
“By the end of the week, I think Indiana will be in the right place, which is to say that we need in a big diverse country like America, we need to have space for people to act on their conscience, that it is a constitutional right that religious freedom is a core value of our country, “ Mr. Bush said.
But “we shouldn’t discriminate based on sexual orientation,” he said.
He continued, “So what the State of Indiana is going to end up doing is probably get to that place.”
Said Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker in a press conference recently:
"In our state there's a balance between wanting to make sure that there's not discrimination [and] at the same time respecting religious freedoms. ... We do that in different ways than what they've done in Indiana.
"Certainly that's going to be part of the debate here and across the country."
Said Marco Rubio to Fox's The Five:
"I don't think Americans want to discriminate against anyone. I think the fundamental question in some of these laws is should someone be discriminated against because of their religious views? So no one here is saying it should be legal to deny someone service at a restaurant or a hotel because of their sexual orientation. I think that's a consensus view in America. The flip side of it is, though, should a photographer be punished for refusing to do a wedding that their faith teaches them is not one that is valid in the eyes of God."
Said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie [via NJ.com]:
"Well, we should not have a situation where people perceive that anybody will be denied service. But, I can tell you this, I know Mike Pence, and he's got nothing but love in his heart for people and I just do not believe that in any way Mike Pence would intend for anything that happen in his state on his watch to be discriminatory towards any person," Christie said in a statement.
"And so, my guess is that he'll fix the problem and move on," Christie said. "Because that's the kind of guy he is. I will tell you, amongst the governors, there is nobody that I've met amongst the governors who is more sincere in his faith and in his love for people than Mike Pence. So, I just don't believe any of this stuff is true and to the extent that something needs to be fixed to clarify that no one will be denied service for discriminatory reasons, I'm sure that's exactly what Mike will do."
Mike Huckabee told Fox News' Megyn Kelly the situation in Indiana was a "manufactured crisis" by the Left:
"If [the Left] manufactured as many products as they do crises like this one, which is an utterly phony attempt to create some kind of division, 92 million Americans who are jobless would have jobs. I've never seen anything so utterly off the mark in my life as trying to pretend that the RFRA law is actually discrimination. It is most certainly not. It simply gives you access to the court. And there's no guarantee that you're going to win when you go."
Ben Carson told Breitbart News:
"It is absolutely vital that we do all we can to allow Americans to practice their religious ways, while simultaneously ensuring that no one's beliefs infringe upon those of others. We should also serve as champions of freedom of religion throughout the world."
Rick Santorum, speaking to students at George Washington University:
"The only sensitivity training we need is to respect every person. Tolerance is the most misused word in the English language. Tolerance means you can say really horrible nasty things that I hate and offend me. That’s how we get along. You have a right to be mean -- a right to be nasty to people. That’s how this country works, because we have thick skins and we aren’t offended. Should a gay or lesbian-owned printshop have to print signs for the Westboro Baptists that say ‘God hates fags’? Should a Jewish printshop have to make signs for the KKK? Should a kosher deli have to serve non-kosher food? It’s a two-way street. Tolerance is a two-way street. If you’re saying that ‘your religious liberties are not as important as my -- fill in the blank,’ then I’ve got a problem with that."
Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry's spokesman Travis Considine said he supported the law:
"Governor Perry has always fought to expand religious freedoms, which is why Texas became a beacon for liberty during his leadership. He believes it's up to the states and their leaders to determine what's in the best interests of their citizens,"
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said "“I oppose discrimination and I reject the notion that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act is discriminatory,” adding:
I will note that President Clinton signed the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act at the federal level and Secretary Hillary Clinton has now said she opposes this law. It would be interesting to learn if Secretary Hillary Clinton silently opposed this protection of religious liberty when President Clinton signed it, or if she has just recently ‘evolved’ on that. The great irony is that in the minds of today’s liberals the only bigotry to be tolerated is their own bigotry against religious beliefs.
Rand Paul has yet to comment publicly on the situation.

Darius WadiaThe first sentence "The totally-not-just-for-sexting-but-we-don't-really-know-why-because-we're-old app Snapchat" really sums up my exact feelings.
The totally-not-just-for-sexting-but-we-don't-really-know-why-because-we're-old app Snapchat has grown rapidly over the last couple years. In 2013, the company got to be too large for the little yellow house/former pot shop they were renting on the Venice Boardwalk and moved their base of operations into some undoubtedly high-ceilinged, industrial-chic space on Market Street, still not too far from the beach. Now, the LA Times reports, they're expanding again, taking up about 40,000 square feet at Abbot Kinney and Venice Boulevard, plus spreading into more Market Street storefronts, and into Thornton Lofts on Ocean Front Walk.
Office space has become incredibly desirable and expensive in Venice, in part because of the success of tech companies like Snapchat (Silicon Beach is a thing, somehow!). Offices in the neighborhood now cost twice what they did in 2011—it's now $5.82 a square foot per month, on average—while the vacancy rate has fallen from 20 percent to just 10 percent. That's great news for landlords, but it's squeezing down on other, smaller companies who lease space in the area.
In this single wave of growth, Snapchat will displace about three dozen renters in the multiple buildings they're moving into. It's not clear which addresses and suite numbers exactly Snapchat is going to occupy, but at the complex on Abbot Kinney, they're snatching up about 40,000 square feet, leaving roughly 6,700 square feet of the space alone. Who will be mercifully passed over? We've compiled a semi-complete list of tenants now in the buildings that Snapchat is taking over. Some of them might be spared; others are definitely on the chopping block or have already had to leave.

UPDATED 3/26: The battle between Beachwood Canyon residents and anyone who wants to look at the Hollywood Sign has officially spilled over into public park land. Last year, the city gave these ultraNIMBYs a big gift with the introduction of a shuttle bus up the otherwise inaccessible Mount Hollywood Drive to a designated "Hollywood Sign Viewing Area" far away in Griffith Park, where folks could squint and snap distant shots of Los Angeles's most recognizable landmark. It wasn't a perfect solution, but it was something. Now comes the latest twist: the Department of Recreation and Parks has started a pilot program that suspends the shuttle service and instead opens Mount Hollywood Drive, long closed to cars, to all auto traffic (plus parking).
Mount Hollywood Drive worked fine for periodic shuttle buses carrying a lot of people, but opening the floodgates to all traffic is causing problems. Cars are forced to line up one behind the other as they crawl up into the hills searching a for a place to park, since there are no designated spots. Tourists roam all over the windy, narrow street, and with zero infrastructure (signs, rest stops, lights), it's become the same sort of recipe for disaster that the Hollywood Sign neighbors in Beachwood Canyon are always complaining about. A tipster shares this amateur video, shot by a concerned local, which makes the problems clear.
Besides an alert that shuttle service will not be operating through April 12, Rec and Parks has been completely quiet on the matter. Streetsblog suspects that the pilot program is the result of more pressure from Beachwood Canyon—since it means that more people will (theoretically) be able to reach the designated viewing point and therefore (theoretically) stay out of Beachwood, that seems like a reasonable guess. (Plus, why else open up park land to cars?) UPDATE 3/26: Rose Watson of Rec and Parks confirms in an email that the opening was made in response to pressure from Beachwood residents, "and also for the other neighborhoods that surround the park, particularly those areas along Los Feliz Boulevard and Franklin Avenue." Meanwhile, Friends of Griffith Park are already mobilizing against the program out of concern for personal and environmental safety.
Over in Beachwood Canyon, the residents finally got the permit parking district they've been begging for (keeping visitors from parking on the public streets around their houses) and, quite coincidentally we're sure, Rec and Parks reopened the Hollyridge trailhead that leads up behind the Sign. So if you're looking to get to the Hollywood Sign, here's exactly how—you might have to park farther away, but you'll probably still piss off the neighbors.
UPDATE 3/26: Watson writes in an email that the opening is a temporary project that will last through April 12, but the city is collecting data and will consider extending it. She adds that in addition to taking pressure off neighbors, "The goal is to relieve traffic congestion caused by the 6,000 vehicles that drive up to the Observatory. Spring Break is traditionally the busiest time of the year for the park with many thousands of vehicles travelling through it." —Ian Grant

Planet Romeo is one of the largest gay male social networks used outside of North America. Unlike most U.S.-based gay dating services, Planet Romeo encompasses a rather broad set of online services incorporating aspects of geo-location apps, traditional dating sites, and community reviews similar to Yelp. In its latest move to set itself apart from the increasingly crowded market for digital real estate, Planet Romeo has announced its plans for a mobile application designed specifically to work with the upcoming Apple Watch.
“Imagine being notified as soon as the right guys are nearby or getting turn-by-turn navigation to your next date," said Planet Romeo Chief Product Owner Sven Voges. "PlanetRomeo is a perfect match for the smartwatch. Users will easily view profiles, chat and plan dates on the go.”
While hookup apps like Grindr and Scruff have become ubiquitous across most mobile computing operating systems, none of the larger mobile apps have successfully made the jump onto wearable platforms. It remains to be seen just how a fully-fledged chatting app might work on a small wrist-mounted screen. If Apple’s “digital touch” features work the way Jony Ive and co. have described, however, Planet Romeo may have the most interesting take on the hookup app to date.

All-lady roller derby team LA Derby Dolls used to call Historic Filipinotown home, but when their landlord started talking about putting some condos up on the site of The Doll Factory (as the team's digs are called), the Dolls knew it was time to search for a new home. It's taken about a year, but it looks like they found it: Eastsider LA says that the Dolls are moving to a big warehouse on Alhambra Avenue near Valley Boulevard in El Sereno. Though located on a fairly commercial strip of street, the new venue is less than a mile from Cal State LA, so it's not exactly in the middle of nowhere.
In addition to roller derby, the Dolls have used their facilities in the past to host community events, as well as classes in roller derby for youth and adults. Though the 31,000-square-foot building is smaller than their former home (50,000 square feet), it will allow them to continue such programming, says a statement on their website.
