According to a message posted on their front page, Blingee.com is going to be permanently “turned off” on August 25. This is sad news. A while back, Doug (aka Internet History) and I began collecting death Blingees––sparkling tributes to dead pets, relatives, celebs, etc––and then we started posting our collection at RIP Blingee.

One of the most fascinating relationships between animals is the one that seems to exist between wolves and ravens. The raven, scavenger of food of all types, will often follow wolf packs in hopes of morsels of food. And wolves have learned to watch for circling ravens as a sign of of possible food below. But there seems to be more than just a symbiosis based on food between the two species; many observations have been made that can only be described as a friendship between the big predator and the wily bird.
I didn’t know what this was about, so here’s an excerpt from an article on HuffPo:

For 37 years it’s been up there on the flat roof of Mark Gubin’s building in the flight path of Mitchell International Airport. A sign painted in letters 6 feet tall tells people arriving here by air: “WELCOME TO CLEVELAND.”

Above that the roof, he was having lunch one day in 1978 with a woman who worked as his assistant. Taking note of all the low-flying planes, she said it would be nice to make a sign welcoming everyone to Milwaukee. “You know what would even be better?” Gubin said.
The next thing you know, he’s out there on the black roof with a roller and white paint creating the sign that would bring more notoriety than anything else in his long career. A story about his confusing message ran in thousands of newspapers and magazines, on national TV news, “The Tonight Show,” Paul Harvey, all over.

Edit: this is not an attack on The Black Lives Matter Movement, I still support the movement but this act was unnecessary. The only positive thing that came from this is that it showed us that white liberals aren’t as progressive as they think.
No but see here’s the thing.
BLM has been asking Sanders for a plan. Sanders has, frankly, responded poorly. He has insisted that racial inequality comes from economic inequality and that if he solves one it will solve the other.
Yes. This happened. As though there is no racism. As though there is only classism.
BLM (rightfully) didn’t accept that, and stepped their game up. Twice they have interrupted his rallies because, frankly, his plans as they stood were not going to help black people.
Lo and behold - Bernie wised up. He called an attorney and member of BLM and (importantly) black woman, Symone Sanders (no relation). And he said, “What am I doing wrong?”
In a long meeting, she told him. And at the end of that meeting, he hired her as his new press secretary. Now he has released an ACTUAL PLAN for criminal justice reform. Now he has pledged ACTUAL SUPPORT to BLM.
Saying you want to help is not the same as helping. Black people were not obligated to give Bernie a pass just because he said his plan would help them, when he would not even listen to them or accept their criticism of his platform.
Now he is listening. Now he has to follow through. And we should not be critical of the protesters who got through to him, when no one else could, and made him see the error of his ways.

power: refers to the extent to which the stakeholder can assert their will over the organisation (Maignan, Ferrell and Ferrell, 2005)
legitimacy: which is the appropriateness of the stakeholder’s actions towards the firm
urgency: is the degree to which the actions of the stakeholders require an immediate response, or where the response is time sensitive in nature
In marketing theory, a stakeholder who exercises all three is know as the Definitive Stakeholder: someone with a legitimate claim, which is urgent, and which can be enforced due to the stakeholders level of power over the organisation
BLM demonstrably have a legitimate claim, they have an urgency to their claim, and through the demonstrations, they moved from the dependent (
types of stakeholders who have legitimate and
urgent needs, but no power to influence the organisation. This group often
require the guardianship of the stakeholders who exercise legitimate power over
the organisation) to the definitive.
They did it exactly, textbook level, right in getting a legitimate and urgent claim moved from a “If someone important says it we’ll think about it” to “We are important, we’re saying it”.

According to
the Wichita Eagle, Wichita State mathematician Beth Clarkson has found
irregularities in election returns from Sedgwick County, along with
other counties throughout the United States, but has faced stiff
opposition from the state in trying to confirm whether the
irregularities are fraud or other, less-nefarious anomalies.
Analyzing election returns at a precinct level, Clarkson found
that candidate support was correlated, to a statistically significant
degree, with the size of the precinct. In Republican primaries, the bias
has been toward the establishment candidates over tea partiers. In
general elections, it has favored Republican candidates over Democrats,
even when the demographics of the precincts in question suggested that
the opposite should have been true.
Clarkson’s interest in election returns was piqued by a 2012 paper
released by analysts Francois Choquette and James Johnson showing the
same pattern of election returns, which favor establishment Republican
candidates in primaries and general elections. The irregularities are
isolated to precincts that use “Central Tabulator” voting machines —
machines that have previously been shown
to be vulnerable to hacking. The effects are significant and
widespread: According to their analysis, Mitt Romney could have received
over a million extra votes in the 2012 Republican primary, mostly
coming at the expense of Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich. President
Obama also ceded significant votes to John McCain due to this
irregularity, as well.

This is Alice as an older lady. The pillow says “If you can’t say something good about someone, sit right here by me.”
Krystal Dixon dropped off her kids and nieces and nephews at the Fairfield, Ohio, pool just as she’d done many times before. Not a half-hour later, the family was being rushed to the hospital after a violent altercation with local police.
The incident started so small. When one child didn’t have swimming trunks, staff demanded the family leave. Even though Dixon, pregnant and 33, said she had a swimsuit for the child, workers at the Fairfield Aquatic Center—about 25 miles north of Cincinnati—said it was too late. The mom decided to get the other kids and go. That’s when, according to Dixon, a park ranger followed her. When the teens came over to see what’s going on, the ranger took out handcuffs.
The ranger said they’d be arrested if they didn’t leave. He asks for Dixon’s ID, which she doesn’t have on her, then grabs her arm. The children ask the officer to let Dixon go, and the scene escalates.
That’s when a 911 call turns what was a minor breach of pool rules into chaos: A white officer using pepper spray on black teenage girls, and one 12-year-old—Dixon’s niece—being slammed against a cop car. Her family says she has a fractured jaw and broken ribs.
“Everything’s going crazy and they’re videotaping, trying to make it look like a racist thing and it’s not at all,” the caller said. “They were breaking our policy and we told them they couldn’t be here anymore and it’s really scary and I don’t feel safe.”
Two adults were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. A 12-year-old girl was charged with assault and resisting arrest, while a 15-year-old was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
As I was sayng last night, if these right wing rockstars didn’t make this their turf, this moral superiority, holier than thou, patented sexual purity hubris of their raison d’etre …nobody would be talking about it.
In Palin’s case, there’s another odd bit of hypocrisy added in when she carps about the media spotlight she actively pursued as a reality tv show and abstinence only cause celeb. They make wanting it both ways look like an art form.
Upworthy carried a story summarizing an experiment demonstrating that rats exhibit empathy. Why do I care about this? Because the graphics showing the experiment on Upworthy made me smile, and smiling is good. Here’s the link in case you want to watch the video embedded in the story.
Some scientists ran an experiment to demonstrate that. Here’s how it worked:
The scientists put a rat in water (which rats hate). Not enough to hurt the rat, but enough to annoy it.
Then they put another rat in a safer, dry area with a door it could open to save the first rat.
When the dry rat heard the damp, miserable rat get upset, she came to the rescue.
Still not satisfied with the result, the scientists ran a more complex test.
What if you bribe the dry rat with food? Will she ignore it to rescue the wet rat in the next chamber?
Scientists presumed it would be easier for the not-in-peril rat to take the obvious selfless route when it was given only one choice. But what if they gave her a delicious bribe (chocolate cereal) and then let her choose between saving her friend and a buffet?
The rats, by a significant margin, still usually saved their friend before getting their delicious bribe. What does that mean?
Rats might care more about each other than things like food, and that prioritization might be encoded in their DNA.
Why should we care about super-thoughtful rats?
It is often argued that humans are inherently selfish — that without guidance, we would all default to killing and stealing and an “every person for themselves” mentality. That we only help others if it helps us. That evolution can’t make us selfless; it’s something we have to force ourselves to do.
But if rats show human-like qualities (they laugh like us, they dream like us, they like to have selfless lovers) like altruism, that means it isn’t a human-learned behavior. It could be encoded in our DNA. It means humans could be empathetic and kind by default.
It also means that rats and humans have more in common than we think.
