Analogy of a Horse

by Miss Cellania
Enure01

Comedic genius.

Was this guy born with it, or does the physical punishment of a professional rugby career make you a comedic genius? Joe Marler of the Harlequins spoke to reporters about their upcoming game with Bath. The simple adage about getting back on the horse led to a trip down the rabbit hole. Marler's Wikipedia entry has been updated since this video came about. -via Laughing Squid

Wrong Way Bicyclist Hits Jaywalking Guy, They Decide It Cancels Out

This bicyclist, who was going the wrong way, hit a pedestrian who wasn't using the crosswalk. There's an argument to be made about who was more wrong, but these guys didn't have it. They had a very short conversation about their predicament and went their separate ways.

The Coming To America Sequel

by Miss Cellania

More than 30 years later, Coming to America is getting a sequel. Eddie Murphy will return as Akeem, the crown prince of Zamunda, and Arsenio Hall will reprise his role as Akeem's best friend Semmi. Wesley Snipes has joined the production as General Izzi, the ruler of another nation in Africa. He could very well be the antagonist in the story. What we know so far:

In the sequel, Akeem is set to become King of Zamunda but discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle. Honoring his father’s dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America to meet the unlikely heir.

James Earl Jones will also return as King Jaffe Joffer, and Paul Bates, who played Akeem's bodyguard, will also appear. Newcomers to the story include Leslie Jones. It is unclear whether the movie will be called Coming to America 2 or Coming 2 America, but it is scheduled to open in December of 2020.  -via Uproxx

How a French Truck Manufacturer Sabotaged Nazi War Production

by John Farrier

While under German occupation during World War II, the French car company Citroën continued to produce trucks. But it had to do so for the hated enemy armies.

In response, Pierre-Jules Boulanger, the president of Citroën, found a brilliant and subtle way to sabotage those trucks.

He had factory workers move the engine oil indicator notch on the dipstick down just a little bit. Jalopnik explains:

By moving the notch down, the trucks would not have enough oil, but German mechanics would have no idea, because, hey, they little notch on the dipstick says its just fine. Then, after the truck has been used for a while and is out deployed somewhere crucial, whammo, the engine seizes up, and you’ve got a lot of angry, stranded, vulnerable Nazis, balling up their little fists and redly barking curses in German.

They Found A Sea of Fresh Water Under the Ocean

by dyeselaaa

Researchers from Columbia University and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution spent 10 days towing electromagnetic sensors from New Jersey to Massachusetts and discovered something very unusual under the ocean: a sea of fresh water underneath all that salt water.

By measuring the way electromagnetic waves traveled through fresh and saline water, researchers mapped out fresh-water reservoirs for the first time.
It turns out the subterranean pools stretch for at least 50 miles off the US Atlantic coast, containing vast stores of low-salinity groundwater, about twice the volume of Lake Ontario. The deposits begin about 600 ft (183 m) below the seafloor and stretch for hundreds of miles. That rivals the size of even the largest terrestrial aquifers.

These Torches Keep The Vineyards from Freezing

by Franzified

I personally love the cold. Staying at home, enjoying the cold breeze coming from the window, drinking hot chocolate (or coffee or tea), and just wrapping myself in a blanket and then proceed to sleep — these are just some of the things I love doing in the cold days. But not everybody enjoys the cold, especially the plants, as the cold weather damages them.

This is what happens right now in Italy. The abnormally cold weather damages the vineyards which could potentially be worth millions of Euros. To prevent the cold from coming to the plants, the farmers have created this simple, but effective method — lighting up torches. The result is a visually stunning image of lights that span for hectares. Unfortunately, the solution still does not prevent the plants from being damaged. But it does a little, at least.

While The Local reports that 300 torches can raise the temperature in one hectare by about three degrees Celcius—and while that difference can certainly mitigate some of the damage—the torches are unlikely to fully protect the agricultural industry. The farmers’ union Coldiretti, according to The Local, estimates that losses from the inclement weather will still add up to millions of euros.

Cairn Delivers Great Outdoor Gear That You Didn't Know You Needed

by Heather Balogh Rochfort on The Inventory, shared by Shep McAllister to Deadspin

Let’s be real: outdoor gear is expensive, and buying an item sight unseen can be more terrifying than the moment right before the Pillsbury tube of crescent rolls pops open (it makes me shudder to think about it).

Emperor Tewodros II's Stolen Locks of Hair Returned by British Museum

by Exuperist

The Ethiopian emperor Tewodros II had an unfortunate end to his life, but one that no doubt he had done to preserve dignity and honor. Instead of being taken prisoner by British forces in the 19th century, he shot himself and they took two locks from his hair.

Now the National Army Museum in London, to which the locks of hair had been given, will be returning it to its rightful place.

The return of the locks follows a recent report commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron that recommended African treasures in French museums be returned to their countries of origin. During colonial rule in Africa, thousands of cultural artefacts were plundered from the continent by Western countries.

The Best Play Of The Weekend Comes From Rugby Sevens

by Barry Petchesky

I could argue that the true test of a sports highlight is its ability to get you hyped even if you don’t totally understand what’s going on. (That definition makes this the greatest sports highlight of all time, which, you know, it just might be.) This rugby sevens play aces the test.

Our Brain's "Readiness Potential" Before Doing Something Extreme

by Exuperist

So many decisions come into play when you are thinking of doing something that would be unthinkable for you like say, bungee jumping off a high cliff or tower. Now, there is a moment just before you make the decision to jump off when your brain spikes up in activity. Researchers have recently been able to measure that split-second decision-making which was first coined in 1964 as bereitschaftspotential (BP) or the "readiness potential" in English.

The German and Austrian authors of the current study opted to have their subjects go bungee jumping in hopes of recording this readiness potential. While bungee jumping has its roots in an ancient ritual on the South Pacific island-nation of Vanuatu as a way to test one's courage, prior studies have shown it results in a sharp rise in concentrations of beta-endorphins right after jumping. (This spike is despite the fact that, the authors note, bungee jumping is statistically less life-threatening than more common activities like bicycling or dancing. Our impulse reactions are not rational.)
