As the coronavirus pandemic spread in the spring and summer, Pokémon Gorolled out a series of changes that made it easier for players to keep participating. Now Niantic Labs has announced that while some of the temporary bonuses it added will remain active, several of them will go away as of October 1st.
In April the game added a feature where your buddy Pokémon would gather gifts from nearby PokéStops even if you didn’t leave your home, and now it will only do that if you’re running low. The distance walked to hatch eggs is going back up to where it was previously, and incense that attracts Pokémon will only have increased effectiveness while walking.
The game’s makers have pushed it as a way to encourage activity and movement, and with restrictions loosened in many areas around the world, they’re making some changes to get back to that. On social media, many players requested that Niantic rethink the changes, either because they were welcome improvements to the existing game or because of the still-ongoing pandemic.
The tweaks that will remain after October 1st are as follows:

You will continue to receive three times the Stardust and XP for your first Pokémon catch of the day.

I'm a thirty-something gay man married to a thirty-something gay man. For almost two years, we've been seeing another pair of married gay men around our age. They were our first experience with any sexual or romantic interaction outside of our relationship. The first six months were hot and heavy. We were together constantly and having sex almost every night. After the “honeymoon phase” ended, one member of the other couple (“Roger”) wanted to slow things down. Roger and I had some conflict over this, and I have to admit that I showed a pretty bad side of myself while grappling with insecurity. Eventually, Roger pulled me aside to talk one-on-one. He wanted us to be “friends who have sex sometimes.”
Then, right after the COVID-19 lockdown started, Roger and I had another heart-to-heart on my birthday. After many drinks some a lot of making out we both said we loved each other. Roger walked it back the next day. “I don't know what you thought you heard last night,” he basically said, “but I'm not in love with you.” I was devastated. This isn't what I want. I am in love with Roger and his husband. I don't want to be “friends who have sex sometimes.” My husband is OK with just being friends with Roger and his husband, especially since their large friend group has adopted us and he worries we’ll lose all these new friends if I end our friendship with Roger and his husband. I would really like to talk this out with Roger, but I'm not sure I can get through that conversation without DTMFAing him.
I mean, which was it? Were we a fun sexy fling and nothing about the last two years mattered? Or was he in love with me but decided the conflict and complication of this relationship wasn't worth it? Which was it?
Trouble In The Quad
Roger doesn’t want what you want.
That sucks and I’m sorry. But we’ve all been there. Falling for someone who doesn’t feel as strongly for us as we do for them, whether we’re dating as couples or singles, is always painful. But that pain is an unavoidable risk. And while it may seem unfair that you can only have Roger in your life on his terms, that’s the reality. That’s everyone’s reality, TITQ, because loving someone doesn’t obligate that person to love us back or love us in the same way that we love them or want the same things we want. But Roger can’t impose his terms on you. If being “just friends” feels like an insulting consolation prize after what the last two years has meant to you, if that’s not good enough, then Roger doesn’t get to be in your life. You can have terms too.
Backing up for a second: You seem to believe that if the relationship mattered—if Roger and his husband loved you and your husband and vice-versa—then it wouldn’t have ended. That’s false. Something can matter and still end. Something can also matter more to one person than it did to another person. (Or couple.) You don’t have to dismiss or minimize what the four of you had because Roger has decided, for whatever reason, that being in a quad with you isn’t what he wants.
And if you’re hoping to get this quad back together… and it’s entirely up to Roger… you’re going about it wrong. If Roger got cold feet due to the “conflict and complication” of being in a poly relationship, TITQ, then your best move is to avoid conflict and complication. If you think Roger told the truth on your birthday and lied to you the next day, then you need to demonstrate the kind of emotional maturity that makes you a more attractive partner to a person like Roger. And provoking a confrontation with Roger—staging a scene where you’re likely to dump up a guy who has already dumped you—will have the opposite effect. It will only confirm for Roger the decision he has already made.
Your best bet—your best strategy—is to accept Roger’s offer of friendship and refrain from blowing up at him. You should also tell him, just once and very calmly, that you and your husband would be open to getting back together with him and his husband. Best case scenario, the quad gets back together. Worst case scenario, you have some great memories, a whole bunch of great new friends, and maybe once in a while a hot foursome with Roger and his husband.
Two last things…
I would love to see video of you showing the “bad side” of yourself to Roger. Given the way people tend to minimize their own shitty behavior—all people do it, myself included—I’m guessing it was/you were ugly. If you’re prone to blowing up when you don’t get what you want, well, it’s understandable that someone who dislikes conflict and complication would start getting cold feet once the honeymoon phase ended. I’m not suggesting you’re toxic or unbearable‚ TITQ, only that different people have different tolerance levels for romantic conflict. But if what you want is for Roger to reconsider the decision he’s made, well, you might also wanna let him know you’re working on your approach to conflict. If you don’t want Roger to regret getting the quad back together and then quickly end things again, TITQ, or for the next Roger or Rogers who come into your life to head for the hills after their honeymoon phases end, you’ll talk with someone who can give you the tools to better handle conflict.
And finally, TITQ, the other two men in this quad feel strangely inert—more like houseplants than husbands. I mean, you have nothing to say about how Roger’s husband feels and very little to say about how yours does. Is Roger’s husband interested in keeping the quad together? Besides not wanting to lose some new friends, does your husband give two shits? Because even if Roger decides he wants back in, TITQ, and that’s a big if, your revived quad won’t last for long for if your houseplants—sorry: your husbands—aren’t just as invested as you are.
The man I’m seeing is the first person I ever opened up to about my bisexuality. While I don’t think a woman should waste her time (or pussy) on a man who tells her he can’t have “that kind of sex,” i.e. sex she enjoys, with a woman he cares about, I can understand why you might want to keep seeing this guy. (COVID-19 is making it hard to find new partners.) Dr. Anthony Fauci downplayed concerns about the safety of a COVID-19 vaccine during a conversation Tuesday at the 2020 Texas Tribune Festival.
Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a leader in the U.S. response to the novel coronavirus, said Americans should feel confident in the development and efficacy of a vaccine. This comes as a growing majority of people say they are not likely to be immunized as soon as a vaccine is available.
It’s “disturbing” that so many people are reticent to get a vaccine, he said, blaming “mixed messages that have come out of Washington” for waning public trust.
Some public officials, including President Donald Trump, have questioned the credibility of agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration during the pandemic.
Others have viewed Trump’s forecast that a vaccine could be ready by Election Day as politically motivated and expressed fears that the president might sidestep the regulatory process.
Fauci stressed that officials must reach out to their communities to “regain the confidence ... that this is being done to protect them as individuals and to protect our society.”
To reach herd immunity — the point at which enough people are immune to a disease that it doesn’t spread — the community must meet a certain threshold either through vaccination or from previously contracting the virus. Experts worry that if enough people refuse a vaccine, the coronavirus will continue to spread.
Fauci saidfive companies have vaccines that are in advanced clinical trials, nearing the final step before seekingFDA approval.
Two companies, Moderna and Pfizer, are the furthest ahead and have shown early promising results. Moderna appears set to deliver a report to regulators by November. Pfizer, which has already begun to manufacture its vaccine so doses will be ready should it win FDA approval, could deliver its report by the end of October.
The data from each trialand at each stageis closely guarded and shared only with an independent board of scientists, statisticians and clinicians. The board decides whether a potential vaccine shows promise and should advance to the next stage.
“I feel cautiously optimistic, as a scientist, that we will have a safe and effective vaccine,” Fauci said. “I believe it will happen, and it will happen likely by this end of the calendar year.”
Even if a vaccine is ready by the year’s end, it likely will not be widely available until late 2021, experts say, because of the massivelogistical challenges that come with distributing hundreds of millions of doses to every corner of the country. The first people likely to receive a vaccine arehealth care workers and those most at risk of contracting the virus, such as older people and those with preexisting conditions.
Hey guys, I’m stuck fighting Trump, and I can’t figure out how to make Biden perform a fatality. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’ve tried every combo I can think of. Trump is just standing there, swaying back and forth dazed while the announcer bellows out, “FINISH HIM!” But then… nothing. If Biden blows this, I swear to God, my controller is going through the screen.
I’ve wondered if I’m doing something wrong earlier in the fights, but everything seems pretty flawless. I’m throwing out every possible attack on Trump I’ve got: sexual misconduct, misappropriation of funds, obstruction of justice, willful negligence, tax evasion, fraud, and every other form of corruption you could hope for in a political deathmatch. Most of the hits are landing, and Trump’s health is totally depleted, but still nothing happens. What, do I have to take Biden out to dinner first? I’ve tried button mashing a bit just to see if I can luck into doing it. All that I’ve managed to do is get Biden to inch back and forth while saying something well-worded or presidential like, “Trump is unfit for this job,” or “Trump is an individual who is not concerned about the health, safety and well-being of the American people and is frankly engaged in reckless disregard for the lives and health and well-being of our citizens.” What the hell is that?
I was hoping for some move like Scorpion’s, where Biden would rip his own face off and then breathe fire on Trump. Or maybe Biden tears Trump’s head off with his bare hands, then puts on sunglasses and smiles at the camera. You know, something with passion. This election is a brutally violent deathmatch, and there are standards that need to be upheld.
I’m starting to worry Biden doesn’t think he’s supposed to perform a fatality. That can’t be right, though. The whole time Trump just keeps saying, “I’m going to perform such a beautiful fatality on you. You have no idea. I’m really excellent at fatalities, one of the best. That’s what they’re saying. You may have a fatality, but mine is bigger and more powerful. With my great and precise abilities, I will perform a fatality the likes of which few in history have ever seen.” Trump is at least trying to perform a fatality on me. If Biden isn’t also working toward a finishing death blow, he clearly doesn’t understand how modern politics work.
Maybe the developers dropped the ball and forgot to program a fatality for Biden. Maybe there’s been a huge mistake. Has anyone seen Biden perform one? I’ve done some research, but I couldn’t find anything. I keep thinking I’ve found some evidence of Biden’s hidden fatality when CNN and the New York Times post articles about Trump being “destroyed” or “blasted” by Biden. I now realize those publications’ definition of “destroyed” leaves a lot to be desired.
I’m just worried about what I’ll tell my children if I don’t figure this out. Sorry little Jimmy, but I just couldn’t figure it out, so I gave up on America? One of Peacock’s most high-profile original series at last has a release date. The Saved By The Bell reboot will start streaming on November 25th, just in time for you to ignore your family over Thanksgiving weekend while binging it.
Peacock is tapping into the nostalgia factor here, as it’s bringing back some of the original show’s stars. Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) has somehow schemed his way to become governor of California, and Kelly Kapowski (Tiffani Thiessen) is the state’s first lady. Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and Mario Lopez also reprise their roles as Jessie Spano and AC Slater. They take starring roles, while Gosselaar and Thiessen are members of the recurring cast.
The gist this time around is that Zack faces some resistance after he closes too many underfunded high schools in California. He suggests sending kids who’ve been affected by the move to some of the more affluent schools in the state, including his alma mater, Bayside High. Hijinks, I assume, ensue. Zack, Kelly and Jessie all have kids at Bayside, where Slater is a PE teacher.
It’s too early to tell whether the Saved By The Bell reboot will be good, but it at least has a strong pedigree behind the scenes. Tracey Wigfield, the mastermind behind the terrific Great News, is the creator and executive producer of the series.
Houston’s temperature officially reached 65 degrees at Bush Intercontinental Airport this morning shortly after 2 am, and from there it kept on falling. By shortly before sunrise, the low had dropped to 57 degrees. At Hobby Airport, in the midst of the city, the low reached 59 degrees on Tuesday morning. It all feels rather spectacular, and worth celebrating Fall Day.

Highs will likely only reach about 80 degrees despite sunny skies. And this evening, well, temperatures should drop a degree or two below what we saw on Monday night beneath clear skies. After another cool morning—chilly, even, for far inland areas—this should be another splendid day for the area, with highs in the low- to mid-80s. As the frontal air mass begins to modify, expect lows on Wednesday night to be several degrees warmer.

These will be a pair of warmer days, with a few clouds possible on Thursday. Both days should see highs somewhere in the mid-80s, or possibly upper 80s on Thursday. Another, weaker front should push into Houston on Friday and this will set the stage for a nice weekend.

With another push of drier air, the first half of the weekend looks great, with highs on Saturday in the low 80s, and fairly low humidity. The onshore flow should return on Sunday, but I’d still expect highs to stay in the 80s, with plenty of sunshine. Should be a great weekend for outdoor activities.

Next week
Right now it appears as though another modest front may make it into Houston on next Monday, or so, but details are a bit sketchy. The bottom line is that we expect mostly sunny skies through the middle of next week, by which time a chance of rain finally returns to the forecast.
Tropics
The National Hurricane Center has increased the chance that an area of low pressure in the northwestern Caribbean Sea will develop into a tropical depression or storm to 50 percent over the next five days. There are probably a couple of scenarios for this system, including a weaker storm tracking westward into Mexico, or eventually a strong storm moving north toward Florida. Again, while we can’t rule anything out, we have a hard time seeing how it would eventually move toward Texas.

During what is a very uncertain time in our country, I know many of my progressive friends are now even more worried by who has been selected to fill the open Supreme Court seat. But as someone who has known the nominee as a longtime friend and colleague, I’m happy to share that liberals have nothing to fear from the unholy ascendancy of Zonomaw the Facerender.
As the rest of her necromancy classmates and I watched Zonomaw rise to the top of our class, it was clear she was destined for greatness. In the forbidden library and during our dark apprenticeships, we quickly learned how sharp and truly terrible Zomomaw’s corrupted mind could be. Every living being she tortured with unspeakable horrors always succumbed to her will, eventually coerced into pledging undying servitude to her for eternity. Why then should liberals be afraid of someone with such determination and excellent people skills from joining the only institution that has the ability to strike down any legislation that could make their lives better, and enshrine into law those that make it worse?
It’s true that ideologically we couldn’t be further apart. Zonomaw believes in the conservative tradition that our human sacrifices need to be virgins, where I uphold the more liberal tenet that it is up to the human sacrifice’s choice what they do with their bodies, that is until we turn their bodies into undead batteries that sustain our cursed magic. But at the end of the day, we both agreed on what is most important: a constant pursuit of the truth, the value of hard work, and an unflinching respect for the law (specifically the ancient law that lets us drain the souls of the poor underclass so that we can live forever with impunity). I don’t see why my fellow liberals are so concerned over a decrepit being, who has traded her humanity for more power, becoming the decisive vote on the legal determination of reproductive freedom, civil rights, and labor protections for the next 40 years.
Of course, aside from her academic and professional achievements, it is Zonomaw the Facerender the person that truly impressed me the most. Zonomaw volunteers as a mentor to young acolytes, guiding them on the twisted path of the damned, and even teaching her famous face-rending-to-inflict-wounds technique to her favorite pupils. She is a loving mother to two hellhounds she summoned from the depths of the Underworld, and I know how much she spoils them with strips of unidentified flesh leftover from her demonic experiments. Plus, she once brought scones in for the entire class. As liberals, should we really fear scones?
Sure, Zonomaw may adhere to the textualist school of thought, believing the words contained within the arcane Book Of Souls are sacred and must be interpreted literally, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t open to progress. When Zonomaw once raised an army of the dead in class, she not only tore the life essence from fallen men but also condemned the souls of women, giving everyone a wretched fate stuck between life and death, where the only constant is suffering and an eternal yearning for blood. So you see, Zonomaw the Facerender’s nomination is thus a celebration of conservative feminism — one that all liberals can join in on.
Most importantly, as a professor at one of the nation’s top necromancy schools, Harvard, I know that ultimately Zonomaw’s appointment will change nothing about my quality of life. I have nothing to fear from her joining the Supreme Court, and I encourage other liberals who make enough money to think about this in the same way. For everyone else, is it really worth getting so upset over a power-hungry, maniacal defiler of all life taking over the legal reigns of our country’s future? Didn’t I mention the scones?
NASA and SpaceX have set a new launch date for Crew Dragon’s first crewed operational flight: October 31st. The SpaceX Crew-1 mission follows the company’s successful Demo—2 test flight, which flew astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the ISS. It was the first crewed flight that launched from US soil since the final space shuttle mission on July 8th, 2011. That mission returned to Earth with Behnken and Hurley in August, a couple of months after they headed to the ISS on a Crew Dragon.
The company and the agency were originally aiming for an October 23rd launch. They decided to move it a few days later to give both ground and station teams a longer time to prepare and check for issues after a Soyuz launch on October 14th and a Soyuz departure from the ISS on October 21st. NASA explained in an announcement:
“The new target date will deconflict the Crew-1 launch and arrival from upcoming Soyuz launch and landing operations. This additional time is needed to ensure closure of all open work, both on the ground and aboard the station, ahead of the Crew-1 arrival. The increased spacing also will provide a good window of opportunity to conduct additional testing to isolate the station atmosphere leak if required. SpaceX continues to make progress on preparations of the Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket, and the adjusted date allows the teams additional time for completing open work ahead of launch.”
The mission will take NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover and Shannon Walker, as well as JAXA’s Soichi Noguchi, to the ISS. There will stay there for six months. SpaceX delivered the Crew Dragon spacecraft that will be used for this flight to Cape Canaveral in Florida back in August. The capsule will launch on top of a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Halloween at around 2:40AM Eastern time.
NASA says it’s in the final stages of the data reviews needed for the company’s certification following Demo—2. It will broadcast a series of media briefings to provide updates about the certification process and to talk about the Crew-1 mission starting on September 29th, 11 AM Eastern.
When a natural disaster strikes, one of the biggest challenges is getting power to the disaster site. Nissan may have a way to change that. The company has developed an all-electric emergency response vehicle concept. Dubbed the Re-Leaf, the prototype is based on the Nissan Leaf passenger car. In the event of an emergency, it’s able to provide a fully mobile power supply.
The Re-Leaf is fit with weatherproof plug sockets mounted on its exterior. Those can power 110- to 230-volt devices using the car’s lithium-ion battery. The EV could, for instance, power an electric jack hammer, ICU ventilator or LED flood light. Or, with a fully charged battery, the Re-Leaf could power the average UK household for roughly six days.
The Re-Leaf is modified so that it can navigate roads covered in debris. It has a raised ride height, underfloor protection and wider tracks. There’s also a pull-out desk and monitor in the trunk and extra cargo space in the backseat.
Nissan
This is still a working concept, but Nissan has been using the Leaf to provide emergency power and transport in Japan since 2011. So there’s reason to believe that the Re-Leaf could be put to use soon, too.
“We’re constantly exploring ways that electric vehicles can enrich our lives, beyond just zero-emission transportation,” said Helen Perry, a Nissan executive. “Concepts like the Re-Leaf show the possible application of EVs in disaster management and demonstrate that smarter, cleaner technology can help save lives and provide great resilience for the future.”
Scientists believe they’ve found more evidence confirming the presence of a large reservoir of liquid water under the surface of Mars first discovered back in 2018. In fact, they believe they’ve found three more subsurface saltwater lakes surrounding that main one — a huge discovery, seeing as those lakes are potential habitats for life. As Nature notes in its post about the scientists’ paper, the first finding was met with lot of skepticism because it was only based on 29 observations from 2012 to 2015. This study and its findings were based on 134 observations made between 2012 and 2019.
The team used data from a radar instrument on the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Mars Express spacecraft to investigate the planet’s southern polar region. Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding or MARSIS, as the instrument is called, is capable of sending out radio waves that bounce off materials on the planet’s surface. Different materials reflect those signals differently, and the same technique is used to find subsurface glacial lakes here on Earth.
Upon observing an area that’s around 75,000 square kilometers in size, they found locations that reflected those signals back in a way that indicates the presence of water trapped underneath a kilometer of ice. The main lake, the one discovered back in 2018, measures 30 kilometers or 19 miles across, while each of the three smaller lakes surrounding it are a few kilometers across.
While the scientists’ findings are promising, some experts still believe we won’t find lakes on the red planet at all. Jack Holt, a planetary scientist part of NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter program, doesn’t believe there’s enough heat flow under the surface of the planet for water to remain liquid. And even if we do find liquid water under Martian ice, that won’t automatically mean we’ll also find life. See, the lakes have to be very salty to remain liquid, but their salt content must not exceed five times that of seawater to be able to support life. As John Priscu, an environmental scientist at Montana State University, told Nature:
“There’s not much active life in... briny pools in Antarctica. They’re just pickled. And that might be the case [on Mars].”

The testing regime, which will be rolled out in lower and middle-income countries, will allow them to make up ground in a testing gap with richer countries.
Dell is upgrading several of its XPS laptops with 11th-generation Intel processors. The refreshed XPS 13 2-in-1, XPS 13 and XPS 13 Developer Edition are the first Dell laptops to receive Intel’s Evo certification. That means they support fast charging, can run for at least nine hours on a single charge and wake from sleep in under a second.
All three systems have Thunderbolt 4 ports and memory upgrades from 3733MHz LPDDR4x to 4267MHz, with support for up to 32GB of RAM. The updated XPS 13 2-in-1 and XPS 13 offer Intel Xe graphics as well. On top of that, the 2-in-1 has an IR camera that supports Windows Hello and more design options. The convertible machine starts at $1,249 and the XPS 13 begins at $999.
Dell
The Linux-based Developer Edition is pre-loaded with Ubuntu 20.04LTS and Dell is targeting a maximum battery life of nearly 19 hours. It also boasts an updated, InfinityEdge FHD+ display. Dell hasn’t revealed pricing as yet.
The devices will be available in the US and Canada starting on September 30th, with an exception for one variant. Dell will launch an XPS 13 model with a frost machined aluminum finish and an arctic white woven glass palm rest at a later date. The company will start selling all three laptops in some European and Asian countries within the next few weeks.
After 11 years, FarmVille is closing its gates for good. The game will shut down on December 31st, developer Zynga announced. While most people probably don’t think of FarmVille too often anymore, the game did attract millions of users, so this change could still impact plenty of people.
If you don’t remember, FarmVille was a farming simulator that let friends work together as neighbors — and post all about it on their Facebook timelines. As Eurogamer notes, it was the most-played game on Facebook for years. But with Adobe planning to stop distributing and updating Flash Player for web browsers, the FarmVille developers have decided to sunset the game.
“We’re aware that many of you have been with us since the very beginning, helping to build an incredible global community of players over the years who’ve enjoyed this game just as much as we have. For that we say thank you,” Zynga wrote.
In-app purchases will be available until November 17th, when the game’s payment system will be turned off. You’ll still be able to play until December 31st, and any remaining credits should be used by then.
