A look back at one of the (many) projects code-named Highlander

by Raymond Chen

Some time ago, I related a brief history of Microsoft projects code-named Highlander. The last example of such a project involved two teams, which I named Team A and Team 1, both of which were writing a client that accesses a back-end service. Team A code named their version Highlander because “there can be only one”.

A colleague who worked on Team A gave me some more backstory behind this showdown.

When Team A picked the code name Highlander, the important part was the “there can be only one” part, and not so much that they had to prevail. I mean, they would have liked to win, but more important was that somebody win.

They chose the code name Highlander to highlight that the situation with two clients for the same back-end was ridiculous and needed to be fixed. “The internal competition was driving us nuts for years.” My colleague says that he had friends on Team 1 who also thought it was a ridiculous situation.

What made it difficult to resolve is that the two teams existed far apart in the corporate hierarchy. There was no common director or vice president or senior vice president or corporate vice president to make the decision. The nearest common manager (and therefore the person authorized to make a decision) was Bill Gates himself.

My colleague says, “Magically, the issue was resolved before we built Highlander, so maybe our code name helped.”

Another tribute to Microsoft history hiding in Building 41

by Raymond Chen

A little while ago, I mentioned that the hallways of Microsoft Building 41 retell the history of computing. There are also small tributes to the history of Microsoft in those buildings in the floor numbering signs.

The fifth floor sign evokes the Windows fluttering flag motif from the 1990s:

5 with fluttering flag

The fourth floor sign hints at the Blibbet version of the Microsoft logo (time code 0:58) in its striped circular center.

Honest Answers to My Presurgical Intake Form for a Preventative Mastectomy

by Gila Pfeffer

Date: August 15, 2008
Name: Gila Pfeffer (nee Reinitz)
Age: 34
Height: 5′3″ (OK, 5′2″)
Weight: RUDE

Who referred you to see us today? My ob-gyn referred me to this practice specifically, but if you’re asking whose idea it was to have a prophylactic double mastectomy, that’s all me. I’ve been wanting to do this since I first heard about it.

Have you had a psych eval? Yes, I’m fully on board with my choice and frankly would need more of a psych eval if I was prevented from having this surgery. If you think my anxiety levels can’t get any higher, oh yes, the hell they can.

Are you aware of the emotional and psychological impacts of this type of procedure? Yes, I expect to come out the other side of this feeling emotionally whole and validated and psychologically strong, maybe too strong, as though I am invincible. Are you aware of the implications of my not having this procedure?

Do you understand that this procedure is irreversible? I certainly hope so, ma’am.

What is your current bra size? DD

Will you opt for reconstruction? Yes, but less because I care about what my boobs look like and more because of the TRAM Flap reconstruction method, where they take your stomach fat and muscle and repurpose them into breasts. I’ve given birth four times in less than six years. If anyone’s due a free tummy tuck compliments of our expensive health insurance company, it’s me.

What cosmetic result do you hope to achieve in undergoing this procedure? Look, you can replace my breasts with two frozen rib-eye steaks or a pomegranate and one balled-up sock—I don’t care, just get these two ticking time bombs off me.

Please list all operations and hospitalizations: Unless you count the dental implant surgery I had when I was thirteen, I’ve never had any operations, never broken any bones (p’tooh, p’tooh, p’tooh), and overall I’m rather risk-averse. I’m terrified at the thought of undergoing general anesthesia or having my body cut open. I’ve been hospitalized four times, and each time I went home with a new baby.

Last menstrual period: Oh, around three weeks ago, I guess? I’ve got four kids under the age of six; you’re lucky I can remember my own name.

Have you experienced menopause? God, no, I’m only thirty-four.

Were your ovaries removed? No, were yours??

How many pregnancies have you had, and how many live births? Four of each. (Thank God.)

Are you taking any contraceptives at this time? Yes, NuvaRing and it’s the absolute best.

Are you a BRCA gene carrier? What gave it away? Was it the chart of dead relatives in my first intake form? My obsession over having this prophylactic mastectomy? The way I hold my pen?

Anything you’d like to ask the doctor? Well, off the top of my head…Will the anesthesia tube knock my teeth out? What if I wake up in the middle of surgery? What if I die in the middle of the surgery that I’m having to make sure I don’t die?? Will you need to shave any of my body parts? If so, which ones? AND WHO WILL BE DOING THE SHAVING?? I’ve heard that surgeons have a radio station piped into the OR while operating; are you sure this is a good idea? What if they sew me up and forget they left a SURGICAL TOOL in my body, and I set off airport security alarms for the rest of my life and get detained when the TSA lady can’t find any metal on me, even after a pat down, and I miss my flight????

Anything else we should know? I’m terrified. If I try to back out of this, please stop me.

The Evolution of the REM: Series

by Reece Martin

Montreal’s REM is something that has fascinated me since it was first opened, and I’ve only grown to like the project more after experiencing its first phase in person — which, from what I can tell, has been going pretty well.

A REM train gliding over Montreal.

In a lot of ways, it just does the things that any modern transit system should do — platform screen doors, bog-standard specifications, Wi-fi, etcetera — and it does these things with attractive stations, and trains.

In many ways though, what’s most exciting is what comes next; part of that is the extension of service under Mount Royal to points north, west, and eventually the airport; but it’s also about what the service will enable, how it will shape Montreal, what communities will pop up near stations, and as we are seeing with the development of the Peel basin — where entirely new stations will go.

Suffice to say, I think the REM, even when all 67 kilometres of it is operational, will be an organic network that will see not only a lot of passenger growth, but also pressure to expand further. While plans for the eastern REM line were killed, I think when the REM A is fully running and the annoyance of construction is over, people will realize that this was a mistake, and areas adjacent to the existing REM line may well be interested in new stations and potentially also extensions.

The interior of a REM train.

What’s interesting is that the automated nature of the system, alongside the majority of it being at grade or elevated, means that such additions are actually quite practical — Vancouver’s SkyTrain and to an even greater extent London’s DLR have both seen new stations and incremental branches and extensions that have turned modest initial lines into complex networks — often with expanded and redesigned stations to enable more capacity and additional connections. Given the REM when completed will be large enough to be considered a “network” in and of itself, I think that these type of interventions are likely in its future.

And because of this, I wanted to start what will likely be a long-running series on proposals as well as ideas on how the REM A can be expanded, with new branches, services, improvements to infrastructure, and perhaps even new trunks that allow the system to slowly expand to fulfill the role of what might have been other lettered lines, incrementally; as well as potential extensions to other transit services to connect them into the REM.

Some ideas I will talk about in subsequent articles include:

  • Bois Franc Station’s Future
  • More REM Branches south of the St. Laurent
  • REM Branches to Ville-Emard, Lasalle, Lachine and the Airport (from the south)
  • REM to the Plateau
  • REM to Central Laval
  • REM to Montreal North
  • Expanding REM Capacity
  • A Second REM Trunk (Pink Line, Plateau, Laval, Lachine)

by The Onion Staff

Two California doctors, Matthew Perry’s live-in personal assistant, and a reputed drug dealer known as the “ketamine queen” have been charged in connection with the accidental overdose death of the Friends star last year. What do you think?

“This is why I never sold drugs. I was scared I’d kill Matthew Perry.”

Valeria Hewitt, Prayer Copywriter

“Maybe she could offer some clues as to who dealt him the ketamine.”

Graham Ortega, Wedding Bouncer

“Maybe now people will think twice before killing someone famous.”

Houston in the midst of its hottest stretch of 2024, but modest relief is on the way

by Eric Berger

In brief: Temperatures in our region will likely reach their highest levels of the year this week, with most locations pushing into the low-100s. However, this is probably the worst of it for the year, with somewhat cooler weather arriving by this weekend, and healthy rain chances next week.

Peak heating

Our current stretch of weather will almost certainly be the hottest period of 2024. Houston recorded its hottest day of the year on Monday, 101 degrees, and it was the fourth day of triple digit temperatures in a row. Today could well even be a few degrees hotter, and Wednesday is likely to reach above 100 degrees as well. However, after this stretch we should slowly start to cool down and reach the mid-90s by the weekend. Better rain chances and possibly even cooler temperatures are on the horizon for next week, which gets us into September.

Tuesday’s high temperatures will be rather unpleasant. (Weather Bell)

Tuesday

Today will be extremely hot. Most of the Houston region will see daily high temperatures in the low 100s, with mostly sunny skies and only light winds from the west. This probably will be the hottest day Houston experiences this year as we feel the influence of high pressure and sinking air. Low temperatures on Tuesday night will only drop into the low 80s.

Wednesday

This will be another very hot day, with sunny skies. Temperatures, however, may be 1 to 2 degrees cooler than Tuesday.

Thursday and Friday

As high pressure backs off, our temperatures will ease slightly. Most of the region is still likely to see highs in the upper 90s to 100 degrees, however. Skies remain mostly sunny with rain chances near nil.

Saturday and Sunday

As high pressure backs off further, we should start to see some partly cloudy skies this weekend, and that will assist the downward trend in temperatures. It’s still going to be hot, mind you, but highs will peak in the mid-90s for most locations, with nights dropping into the upper 70s, probably. Rain chances will also return this weekend although they’ll start out on the low side, perhaps on the order of 20 to 30 percent daily.

We’ve got a couple of extremely hot days before relief arrives this weekend. (Weather Bell)

Next week

In the absence of high pressure, our region will lie exposed to the influence of Gulf moisture. This is likely to produce at least partly cloudy skies next week, and daily rain chances. I think highs will be in the low- to mid-90s, and much of the area is likely to pick up between 0.5 and 2 inches of rain—although I am getting deep into the realms of speculation with that prediction. The bottom line is that our overall pattern should change from what has otherwise been a very hot, sunny, and rain-free August.

by Corey Mohler
PERSON: "Good people of Buckinghamshire, if you elect me again i will be proud to be your virtual representative. "

PERSON: "Wait, what is a “virtual” representative?"

PERSON: "It means that while you vote for me, your thoughts and opinions will have no impact on how i vote in the parliament."

PERSON: "So...almost like you don't represent us at all?"

PERSON: "Yes, in fact, exactly like that!"

PERSON: "What's even the point of democracy if the elected officials don't represent us?"

PERSON: "Why should i, the educated legislator, have to listen to you, the idiot commoner, on how to run the government?"

PERSON: "Exactly. Correct. I feel the same way, democracy is a pretty dumb idea."

PERSON: "It would be irrational of me to represent your local prejudices when i know better. Where are you going? I'm just being honest."

PERSON: "Unbelievable. Idiot commoners, voting in their own interest!"

Server Tells Customer They Out Of Ranch Like Officer Informing Housewife Her Husband Died At War

by The Onion Staff

MINNEAPOLIS—Standing before her with a somber expression on her face, local server Amanda Davis reportedly told customer Renee Brodie on Monday that the restaurant was all out of ranch like he was a military officer informing a housewife that her husband had died at war. “Ma’am, I am afraid I have some terrible news to share with you: The ranch you ordered is, unfortunately, gone,” said Davis, who placed a hand on the bereft woman’s shoulder as her lips quivered and she wailed “No, no, no!” and “This can’t be,” protesting that the restaurant had always had ranch in the past. “I understand this may come as a great shock to you, but there is nothing more we can do. I am so, so sorry. The ranch really was a terrific sauce.” According to reports, Davis then solemnly handed Brodie a bottle of ketchup for her chicken fingers as if it were a trifold American flag.

Nation’s White Women Announce Plan To Compare Suntanned Arm Against Brown Person’s

by The Onion Staff

WASHINGTON—Refusing to rest until the true scope of their skin’s melanin potential had been communicated to all those in their orbit, America’s white women announced a comprehensive new plan Monday to compare their suntanned arms against those of a brown person. “Let us be totally clear: Whether you are of African, Latino, Arab, or South Asian descent, or of any brown- or olive-skinned ethnicity, we are fully committed to rolling up our sleeves to compare our suntan against your normal skin tone,” said white woman representative Lisa Brakeman, who pledged to prioritize taking such action immediately upon returning from vacation or any extended period of time spent outdoors in the sun. “As white women, we promise to underscore any change in our skin tone, however slight, by talking at length about how ghostly pale we typically are in the winter months and how prone to freckles we were as children. In some extreme cases, we are even prepared to speculate as to whether our tan could be the result of a distant ancestor of a different race.” Brakeman concluded the joint statement with a solemn reminder of how lucky people of color were to be spared the pain of sunburn.

Man Found Strapped To Gurney, Injected With Poison In Execution-Style Killing

by The Onion Staff

BARTLESVILLE, OK—Expressing horror as they described the brutal nature of the killing, law enforcement officials confirmed Monday that local man Aaron Turney had been found strapped to a gurney and injected with poison in an execution-style murder. “Officers arriving at the scene found the victim had been bound to a stretcher and pumped full of midazolam, vecuronium bromide, and potassium chloride in what we have determined was an execution-style killing,” said state police spokesperson Raymond Perk, citing the multiple injection wounds that riddled the victim’s arm and traces of the holy water that was apparently used by a priest to administer the man’s last rites. “Scraps of a surf-and-turf dinner found nearby suggest Mr. Turney was also served a customary last meal prior to his ritual killing. We ask anyone who may have witnessed the execution from the nearby viewing gallery to please come forward with any leads.” At press time, a suspect had been apprehended and was being held on murder charges, with the state attorney general vowing the alleged killer would be sentenced to death by lethal injection for his heinous crimes.

Gender-Affirming Care: Myth Vs. Fact

by The Onion Staff

Gender-affirming care for transgender and nonbinary people helps ease the symptoms of gender dysphoria. The Onion debunks the most common myths surrounding gender-affirming care.
MYTH: Gender-affirming care is mostly about surgery.

FACT: While surgery is sometimes indicated, most gender-affirming care involves cool haircuts.

MYTH: Progressive parents pressure their children into transitioning.

FACT: Progressive parents are too immersed in polycule drama to care.

MYTH: Transgender adults frequently lose their jobs due to their gender identity or expression.

FACT: Most failed to meet their Toyota sales quota for the past three quarters.

MYTH: The Emisil Pocket Rocket is the highest-quality prosthetic penis available on the market today.

FACT: While the Pocket Rocket’s sliding foreskin is a technological marvel, the ReelMagik STPpro’s gravity funnel allows it to maintain a previously-unheard-of 37.63 mL per second average rate of urine flow. This feature, along with the STPpro’s hand-punched pubic hair and movable silicone testicles, makes it unquestionably the Rolls Royce of hyperrealistic penile prosthetics.

MYTH: Treatment is final and cannot be reversed.

FACT: You can say anything you want on the internet and 60% of people will believe it.

MYTH: Trans kids are just going through a phase, like Pokémon or LARPing.

FACT: LARPing is far more than a phase—it’s a way of life.

MYTH: Transgender healthcare goes against God’s will.

FACT: Honestly, God feels so lost these days, He doesn’t even know what He wants anymore.

MYTH: Gender-affirming care is funded by taxpayers.

FACT: 100 percent of federal tax revenue is used to finance 40th-week abortions.

Museum Exhibitions Opening in the Houston Area this Fall

by Jessica Fuentes

Summer is ending and museums in the greater Houston area are ready to debut their fall exhibitions. A slew of solo shows, including some artists’ first museum exhibitions, as well as a few group shows will be opening throughout the season.

A photograph of ceramic stone sculptures made by Carole Smith.

Carole Smith: “Sacred Stones”

Later this week the Galveston Arts Center will open two concurrent solo shows, Carole Smith’s Sacred Stones and Troy Dugas’ Fables in Form and Fiber. Smith’s show features new ceramic sculptures inspired by Minoan stones unearthed at the archaeological site of Gournia on Crete. This new body of work grows out of the artist’s experience at the Mudhouse Artist Residency in Greece last summer. Dugas’ exhibition will include fiber works and ceramic platters, featuring imagery reminiscent of traditional textiles and Indigenous art.

Sacred Stones and Fables in Form and Fiber will be on view from August 24 through November 17, 2024.

Also in August, the 2024 Texas Biennial: The Last Sky will open at the Blaffer Art Museum. The exhibition is an independent survey of contemporary art in the state and was curated by Erika Mei Chua Holum, Ashley Dehoyos Sauder, and Coka Treviño. Participating artists include JD Pluecker, Guadalupe Hernandez, Alexis Pye, Phillip Pyle, II, Veronica Ibargüengoitia, Gilberto Rocha, Antonio Lechuga, Ryan Sandison Montgomery, Bria Lauren, and others.

The 2024 Texas Biennial will be on view from August 27, 2024, through March 9, 2025.

In September, the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University will launch its fall season with a presentation of works by Do Ho Suh. Unlike typical exhibitions, Do Ho Suh: In Process will present works in a studio-like space to highlight the artist’s research and collaborative projects.

In a press release, Mr. Suh explained, “I am a hugely process-driven artist. This exhibition is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time. Much of the work I exhibit I consider to be part of larger processes — whether mental or physical — and for me, it is about that process as much as it is about the outcome. It takes an institution like the Moody to present an exhibition as unusual as this one — it’s a gift as an artist.”

Do Ho Suh: In Process will be on view from September 6 through December 21, 2024.

In late September, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) will present Navigating the Waves: Contemporary Cuban Photography. The show features 100 photographs from the 1960s through the 2010s. The works are part of the museum’s recent acquisition of photographs from Chicago-based collectors Madeleine and Harvey Plonsker.

In a press release, Malcolm Daniel, the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at the MFAH, commented, “The strengths of the Plonsker Collection are unparalleled, in terms of telling the complex and compelling story of post-Revolution Cuban photography. Combined in this exhibition with works already in the museum’s holdings, the collection allows us to chronicle that story from the ‘epic generation,’ whose work would define the image of the Cuban Revolution, to the succeeding generations of photographers, who questioned the power of photography and its relationship to political authority and who created highly personal work in the context of a greater awareness of international contemporary art.”

Later this fall, the museum will open Gauguin in the World, featuring more than 150 paintings, sculptures, prints, and writings by Paul Gauguin. The exhibition includes work from his beginnings in Paris through the end of his life, including the controversial works he made in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands.

Navigating the Waves: Contemporary Cuban Photography will be on view from September 29, 2024, through August 3, 2025, and Gaugin in the World will be on view from November 3, 2024, through February 16, 2025.

In October, the Menil Collection will open the first major museum survey in the U.S. of work by Tacita Dean. Tacita Dean: Blind Folly is organized in collaboration with the artist and highlights her artistic practice of allowing her mediums to shape her work through chance-based processes. The show will include her large-scale blackboard drawings, as well as works on carbon paper and Victorian-era slates, albumen photographs, and 16mm films.

Tacita Dean: Blind Folly will be on view from October 11, 2024, through April 19, 2025.

In November, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) will debut Vincent Valdez’s first major museum survey and will feature previously unexhibited and new bodies of work. Spanning 20 years of his career, Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream… includes drawings, paintings, video, sculpture, lithography, and multimedia installation.

CAMH states, “The artist often works in series, with this exhibition marking the first time these chapters are in dialogue. Valdez celebrates common people, like his own family members, as empowered, formidable, and present, while challenging traditional and historic symbols of power within contemporary society.”

Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream… will be on view from November 15, 2024, through March 23, 2025.
