Unfold Pendant by Form Us With Love

by Katie

As you might have noticed, there have been a few posts lately from the recent and oh-so-long-ago past. That’s because it’s August, and, thankfully, that means it’s time to take a much needed vacation. So, instead of doing all brand spanking new posts each and every weekday, you’ll be seeing some content being fixed and updated and peppered into the line up, which is a good thing unless you like finding a lot of broken links every time you sift through our site.

All that to say that, thankfully, this Unfold Pendant remains at the same price as it was three years ago. Happy day. It’s one of my favorite lights because of its soft silicone shade. That allows this industrial look-a-like pendant to be easily folded, saving space in shipping (or your own moving) boxes.

Kitchen Tunes: Big Stuff Smoked BBQ

by Jessica Jungbauer

kitchentunes-bigstuff

The other day, when we were filling our bellies at Markthalle Neun, Anna of Big Stuff Smoked BBQ came up with the following idea: what if we could sneak into a chef’s kitchen, not only to see but to hear what they’re listening to? Taking a look behind-the-scenes, listening to the same music that’s playing when the chefs do their magic. Many of you know how much we love the combination of food & music and there’s supposed to be a connection between the music a chef’s listening to while getting inspired for culinary creations.

And just like that, a new series on this very blog was born: Kitchen Tunes! We asked our favorite restaurants & cafés in Berlin to send us a playlist of their favorite songs to listen to in the kitchen – from now on, we’ll publish a new one every week! First up, obviously: Big Stuff Smoked BBQ itself! Serving the city with their delicious pork belly sandwiches, their playlist contains American classics from The Andrews Sisters to – of course – Billie Holiday’s ‘Big Stuff’. Give it a listen and enjoy!

Bailey Doesn’t Bark

by Jen McCabe

I’m so enamored with the Summer 2014 Terra Series from Bailey Doesn’t Bark by Re Jin Lee. I especially love her stoneware ring cones — so functional and beautiful to display on your dresser or vanity. I also love the versatile jewelry pods — it’s so nice to have a spot to hold your studs and still be able to tuck hoops or rings inside the pod. All the work that comes our of Re Jin Lee’s studio is wonderful — keep an eye out the first week of each season when she releases her newest collections. I’m already excited to see what comes next! One of my favorite angles of photography has to be top down, whether it is taking a snap of a delicious bowl of noodles or a magazine spread, but these shots take top down to a whole other level. Not only do the places photographed look amazing, it is jaw drapping to see all the inhabitants looking so tiny. These stunning photographs really give perspective, as well as makes me crave a beach holiday. When it comes to a beach, there really is no wrong way to take a photograph I guess.

Another amazing brand to come out of Australia. (I personally haven't been there but after the things I've seen coming out of there, I can't wait to visit!)

There are so many more pretty visuals in their collection, it's just unbelieveable! Another unbelievable (well, you can't blame us) fact is that we want everything. Printed in Sydney, made in Melbourne, the new COLOUR PATCH throw from castle and things is a thing of bright beauty. designer rachel castle chose TONS of colours for this fun bed throw — it fits King, Queen and Double bed widths as a decorative 3/4 throw. Flip it lengthways and it generously covers Single and King Single beds with plenty of left over. Or just throw it on the sofa for a gorgeous pop of summer color. i love all of rachel castle’s work — from her beautiful art prints to the sweet polkadot bed linens, it all screams ‘happy’. i think pharrell would approve!

i found these nifty wood headboards on urban outfitters — cute, right? this is the rustic but playful Oh My Wood! Pyramid Headboard and it comes in a couple of different designs as well — from the chevron or pyramid style above, to this mesmerizing geo motif headboard that comes in either pink, or green. these Paneled headboards are crafted from solid wood and hand-painted. they could be rather interesting as a stand-alone decorative wall piece, too.

Tres lugares para comer enchiladas

by Tery Vega

Delicious Bites: Strawberry Pavlova Recipe

by decor8
Jimena Azpeitia

Dodiiiiii es un merengue gigante!!!!!!

Are you ready for a delicious Strawberry Pavlova recipe? You’ll want to Pin and make this one! Hi there, it’s Jillian here with this month’s Delicious Bites column. I’ve just spent 5 weeks in Europe and I was there for the start of the berry season. I just love berries and I can’t tell you how many punnets of strawberries and raspberries I consumed while I was away. So with berries on my mind I decided to make a Strawberry Pavlova. Australia claims the Pavlova but our close friends and neighbours from New Zealand also claim it as their own. Whoever invented it was pretty clever because the combination of a crisp meringue shell, fluffy marshmallow interior topped with lashings of cream and fruit is a winner. I’ve seen many pictures of desserts claiming to be Pavlova but I’m pretty hard line when it comes to the definition. A Pavlova must be tall and it must have a marshmallow interior and if not, then it’s not a Pavlova.

yum

Do you have one of those old fashioned common sense cookbooks on your bookshelf that you turn to time and time again? Well I have a few and one of those is Maureen’s Simpson’s Australian Cuisine. I can’t claim this Pavlova recipe as my own, because it comes straight from the pages of this well used book, but I’ve changed the method a little. As long as you follow the recipe, it’s actually pretty easy to make but you need to allow plenty of time to make the meringue base and time to let it cool. The base can be made well ahead of time and stored in an airtight container. Once it’s decorated, the Pavlova loses its crunch quite quickly, so don’t decorate it too far in advance.

str6

Don’t worry if the top cracks while it bakes– it’s amazing what a dollop of cream can disguise. Generously top with berries. You really need something tart with a Pavlova to counteract the sugar in the meringue. Raspberries, blackberries or blueberries work well or as my brother prefers, simply drizzled with passion fruit pulp. Once decorated, stand back and bask in the glory as every-one admires your creation. Here’s the recipe for you.

INGREDIENTS: 4 eggwhites / Pinch of salt / 1 heaped cup (230g) caster sugar / 1 teaspoon white vinegar / 1 20 ml tablespoon cornflour / 1 teaspoon vanilla extract  / 1¼ cups (300ml) thickened cream, whipped /1 punnet strawberries, washed and dried / Optional – icing sugar

METHOD: Preheat the oven (conventional) to 180°C/350°F. Line a flat baking tray with baking paper and using a 18cm (7 inch) cake tin as your guide, mark out a circle on the paper. Flip the paper over and use this as your template. In a large clean dry bowl, beat eggwhites with the pinch of salt until stiff. Add the caster sugar gradually, one heaped tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vinegar, cornflour and vanilla extract. Pile or pipe the meringue mixture onto the baking tray, keeping within the marked circle. Smooth the top so it resembles a flat cake. It needs to be at least 5-6 cm (2-3 inches) high. Place the Pavlova in the oven and immediately reduce the oven temperature to 130°C/275°F and bake for 1¼ – 1½ hours or until the Pavlova is dry and very lightly coloured. Turn the oven off and allow the Pavlova to cool completely in the switched off oven. When cool, remove the baking paper from the Pavlova and store in an airtight container. Just before serving, top the Pavlova with the lightly whipped cream and berries and lightly dust with icing sugar if desired.

 str5

str1

This recipe serves six. If you’re serving a crowd you could make 2 separate Pavlovas or one really large one as this is an easy recipe to upscale. For each egg white, you need ¼ cup caster sugar, 1 teaspoon of cornflour and ¼ teaspoon each of vanilla extract and vinegar.  If you’re making a larger Pavlova, make an 8 or 9 inch template and extend the cooking time by 15 – 30 minutes. I hope you enjoy the recipe.

See you all again next month with another Delicious Bites recipe. – Jillian

I have the most fantastic studio to share from lifestyle photographer Kelly Brown who is based in Victoria, BC and Southern California. The fabulous Kelly specializes in natural light photography so when se recently contacted me about a shoot that she did for Leah Alexandra, a Vancouver-based jewelry designer, I was so completely smitten that I couldn’t resist showing off this fab space because I’m a fan of the no-flash movement! I bet this studio tour will make you want to go redecorate your workspace ASAP. It did that for me. It also makes me want to order some rings from Leah, my goodness her online shop has some stunning things! Psst: Click on any image below to supersize and Pin.

About this space Kelly says, “I had the pleasure of photographing Leah Alexandra’s, beautiful new studio space in Vancouver’s Gastown District. Leah is a Vancouver-based jewelry designer who uses sterling silver, 14 karat gold fill, 24 karat gold vermeil and carefully hand-selected gemstones and freshwater pearls. What I love about Leah’s jewelry is that its fun and unique while still being versatile. Better yet, all the jewelry is designed and handmade right in Vancouver. Her gorgeous studio is bright and fresh, utilizing lots of natural light, bold colour pops and geometric shapes. One of my favorite details is the diamond lightbulbs and plant holders.” I’m in love, aren’t you guys too???

Blueberry Vodka Lemonade

by Sues
Jimena Azpeitia

Mochate culeeeera! jajajaja ya vente por los chupes :)

There’s nothing quite like a glass of cold lemonade on a hot summer day. Unless it’s a glass of cold Blueberry Vodka Lemonade! This summer cocktail is the perfect balance of tart and sweet and can also easily be made into a blueberry lemonade mocktail.

(This recipe for Blueberry Vodka Lemonade was originally posted in June 2014, but the post has been updated with new photos and content.)

Glass of magenta colored blueberry vodka lemonade in a glass with eyes topped with a skewer of blueberries and a lemon wedge on a marble platter with blueberries and lemons in the background and "Blueberry Vodka Lemonade" in text at the top

Sometimes I wonder if guests coming into our home for the first time think my husband and I may have a teeny tiny alcohol problem. We have an ungodly amount of liquor on our family room bar-top; we’re talking 30 bottles or so. Not to mention, the inside of the bar is packed full of wine. The thing is, most guests don’t go down to my basement… Where there’s another pretty large stash of liquor. To be honest, I probably have a drink 2-3 times a week and most of those times it’s just one glass of wine or one beer. But because I love making cocktails so much, I like to have my bar fully stocked, so when I need elderflower liquor, I have elderflower liquor. And when I need campari, I have campari. And when I want to sip on a glass of Fernet-Branca after a long day, I don’t want to leave my house to get it (side note, do you like fernet?? It’s a highly controversial digestif, but I LOVE it).

Always be prepared is the Girl Scout motto and while they probably didn’t mean that sentiment to be followed by, “so when you want a cocktail, you have a fully stocked bar,” but I’m owning it.

OK, even if you’re not a big cocktail drinker, you still need to make this blueberry simple syrup and just keep a jar of it in your fridge. I love this blueberry vodka lemonade, but I’d also be totally happy with a virgin blueberry lemonade mocktail, too. It’s the perfect drink for kids or for sitting out on your deck in the sun. You can also add the simple syrup to soda water for a delicious water that will basically taste like blueberry pie.

Collage showing blueberry simple syrup making process, including simple syrup boiling in saucepan and simple syrup being strained into bowl

Once you have the simple syrup made, this cocktail will literally take you 10 minutes. The hardest part is juicing the lemons. Other than that, you put all the ingredients in an ice-filled shaker, shake away, and then pour them into an ice-filled cocktail glass.

Close-up of a magenta blueberry vodka lemonade cocktail topped with skewer of blueberries and lemon wedge with blueberries and lemons in background on a marble platter

Absolutely obsessed with the color of this cocktail! I’ve noticed that every time I’ve made the blueberry simple syrup, it comes out a slightly different hue and I have to say this is my favorite color yet. It’s just such a happy cocktail.

Bird's eye view of magenta blueberry vodka lemonade on a marble platter and topped with arrow skewer of blueberries with blueberries and lemon wedges in the backround

I’m in love with this blueberry vodka lemonade in large part because of the balance of flavors involved. It’s a little bit tart from the lemon, but also nice and sweet from the blueberry simple syrup. Basically everything I love in life.

Bird's eye view of two blueberry vodka cocktails topped with arrow skewers of blueberries and lemon wedges on a marble platter with blueberries and lemon wedges in the background

You’ll also be quite happy to hear that you don’t actually need a fully stocked bar in your home to make this cocktail a dream come true. Just vodka!! And if you’re a cocktail drinker/maker, chances are you already have vodka at home. It’s kinda one of those must-haves. We pretty much ONLY drink Tito’s Vodka in my house because my husband is obsessed. He’s all hipster about it and constantly talks about how he drank it before anyone else knew about it (insert eye roll emoji here). But it’s fine because I love it, too, and the price is always right.

Glass of magenta colored blueberry vodka lemonade in a glass with eyes topped with a skewer of blueberries and a lemon wedge on a marble platter with blueberries and lemons in the background

Even though my recipe below is for one blueberry vodka lemonade cocktail, please note that it’s super easy to make a big batch of this cocktail. I actually just made a pitcher of it for Mother’s Day! You should be able to get about 6 cocktails from the simple syrup, but that’s also a very easy recipe to double (and I highly recommend doing so, so you have extra in your fridge!). I do love the recipe as a single serving cocktail because it’s so hard to find small batch lemonade recipes and sometimes you just want a glass of vodka lemonade to cool down with on a hot summer day without having to spend hours juicing lemons!

Do you have a fully stocked bar at home?

I’d totally share photos of my bar with you, but I’m slightly embarrassed. LOL!

If you love vodka cocktails, be sure to check out my Earl Grey Vodka Cocktail and my Grapefruit Blood Orange Cocktail.

p.s this cocktail goes perfectly with a good summer book! I just launched a new Instagram account to feature all of the books I’m reading and featured this cocktail along with The Summer List.

Blueberry Vodka Lemonade

There’s nothing quite like a glass of cold lemonade on a hot summer day. Unless it’s a glass of cold Blueberry Vodka Lemonade! This summer cocktail is the perfect balance of tart and sweet and can also easily be made into a blueberry lemonade mocktail.

  • Ice
  • 2 oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 oz. water
  • 2 oz. blueberry simple syrup ((recipe below))
  • 1 1/2 oz. vodka

Blueberry Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup blueberries
  1. In a shaker filled with ice, combine lemon juice, water, blueberry simple syrup, and vodka. Shake well.

  2. Pour cocktail into two glasses filled with ice. Garnish with additional blueberries and a lemon wedge.

Blueberry Simple Syrup

  1. Put sugar, water, and blueberries in a medium-size saucepan and bring mixture to a boil. Once boiling, lower heat and let simmer for about 15 minutes, until the mixture thickens.

  2. Strain the mixture into a bowl, being sure to press down on the berries to extract as much juice as possible. Keep syrup in bowl or pour into a mason jar and place in fridge to cool completely before using.

  • Blueberry simple syrup recipe should make about 6 cocktails.
  • Please note that recipe cook time does not account for time simple syrup needs to cool.

Perfect Peach Iced Tea

by Dana Shultz

Perfect sweet Peached Iced Tea! Perfect for summer and pool days.

Though I used to despise peaches as a child, I’m quite fond of them now. All it took was one good peach milkshake and my mind was changed. Ice cream has undeniable power over me.

Peached Iced Tea RecipeThis peach iced really is perfect.

I hate to compare it to Sonic’s, because that would mean I would have to admit I go there. But since the cat is out of the bag, I am fond of Sonic’s unsweetened iced tea with peach and was happy to recreate something so similar at home that was much fresher and made with ingredients I know and trust.

Peach Simple Syrup!

It starts with peach simple syrup, which has the most insanely gorgeous pink hue. Not to mention, it tastes amazing – like ripe peach liquid candy.  If you don’t want that, you’re wrong.

EASY Peached Iced Tea Recipe, PERFECT for summer!Perfect Peach Iced Tea! So easy and perfect for hot summer days by the pool

Once your simple syrup is made, all that’s left to do is brew up your favorite black tea. We prefer loose leaf, but bagged tea is fine too. The main flavor here is the peach anyway, but quality tea certainly doesn’t hurt.

SIMPLE Peach Iced Tea! So refreshing and perfect for hot summer days. The ultimate pool-side refresher.

This peach iced tea is summer perfection. It’s

Perfectly sweet
Mega peachy
So refreshing
Ice cold
Simple to make
And perfect for hot summer days & BBQs

The beautiful thing is, you can brew the iced tea and keep the simple syrup on hand so each person can decide how much they want to add. Or, you can mix it all together in a tea dispenser for easy serving for parties and such. It really is the perfect summer beverage. Hope you’ll give it a try. Cheers!

3-ingredient peach iced tea that’s perfectly sweet and mega peachy. Perfect for hot summer days and BBQs.
Author: Minimalist Baker
Recipe type: Beverage
Cuisine: American
Serves: 10
Ingredients
SIMPLE SYRUP
  • 1 cup organic cane sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 ripe peaches, thinly sliced + more for serving
TEA
  • 2-3 Tbsp loose leaf black tea (3-4 tea bags), depending on how strong you prefer it
  • 8 cups filtered water
Instructions
  1. Bring sugar, water and peaches to a boil in a small saucepan. Then lower heat and use a wooden spoon to stir and crush the peaches to infuse the flavor.
  2. Once the sugar is dissolved, cover, remove from heat and let steep for for 25-30 minutes.
  3. In the meantime, brew your tea using either a large pot or a tea maker. I use this loose leaf tea steeper from IngenuiTEA. NOTE: Use less tea if you prefer it weaker, or more tea if you prefer it stronger, and try not to let it steep longer than 4-5 minutes or it can get bitter.
  4. Once brewed, remove tea bags or strain out loose leaf tea and transfer to a pitcher. Refrigerate to cool.
  5. Once your simple syrup is finished, pour into a bottle or container over a fine mesh strainer to strain out peaches. You can reserve the peaches for later use, such as to place over oats or ice cream sundaes.
  6. To serve, either set out simple syrup and add as much to the tea as you like, or add all of the simple syrup to the tea and stir. I prefer leaving it separate. Serve tea over ice and fresh sliced peaches. Yields about 10 servings (with ice and peaches).

by Jennifer Hunter
Pin it button big

Let's talk about messiness. What's your threshold for disorder? Just how many socks can pile up on the floor before you reach your boiling point? Would it cool your jets a bit to know that a messy brain may be a more creative and efficient one?

I'm about to tell you something you secretly already know: your home's decor will never be "done." And you know what? That's okay. GET THE LOOK :: SUNNIES + HEAD SCARVES

by Cassandra LaValle
Jimena Azpeitia

si me llama el look!

I like to give myself goals for every fashion season – something to push me out of my routine and guide some of my purchases and style direction as the weather changes. So for summer? I’m thinking the combination of some really fabulous and bold sunglasses paired with mastering the art of the head scarf is where I’ll be focusing my efforts…

But where or where to start!? There are seriously so many options out there for sunglasses, and quite a few for scarves as well. So, naturally, I had to round up some of my favorite pairings…

1. sunglasses + turban // 1. sunglasses + scarf // 3. sunglasses + scarf

If you suck at tying scarves, cheat with me and get on board with the turban trend – I’ll take mine with sparkles! Also those super vintage-inspired sunglasses on the bottom? Top of my list (they’re only $20!)

1. sunglasses + wrap // 2. sunglasses + scarf // 3. sunglasses + scarf

Since this look automatically lends itself to a retro vibe, I have to say that the first pairing here is a must-do. The best part? If you think you won’t end up wearing them to death, you can easily create this look on the cheap – the sunglasses are from Forever21 and the head wrap (which comes in a plethora of patterns) only $26 at Nordstrom. Personally, I’d take selection #2 on this board in a hot second.

I’ve always been told red is my color, so I’m thinking some red shades should also be in the rotation this summer. I like how theses first ones are a little more translucent and light!  All of these options will go well with my favorite olive green bikini…

Check out a ton of more options below and play around for your own mix ‘n match style! Which few are your favorites?

Modelos plus-size que debes de conocer

Jimena Azpeitia
