Carnival Row Continues to Impress In Its New Teaser Trailer

by Julie Muncy

When we first got a look at Carnival Row in action during Comic-Con, it looked really fascinating and lush: a world of fae and human, bright and beautiful and dark and horrid at the same time, as industrialized mankind ruins magic for everyone, like we do.

The New Trailer for The Hunt Is Gory, Scary, and a Little Too Real

by Germain Lussier

The cryptic first teaser for Craig Zobel’s The Hunt set the stage for something terrifying: a world where humans hunt others for sport. It’s a preposterous premise, of course—and it’s one that’s done before. In this trailer, though, we truly see a world divided and that makes the gore and scares even worse. It feels…

“American Horror Story: 1984” – “The Sure Thing”? Not So Much… [VIDEO]

by Ray Flook
Corey

I am actually very interested in this.

Combine our professional obsession with uber-creative genius Ryan Murphy (Glee, Pose, 9-1-1, Feud, and a billion more) with our love for 80’s horror/slasher film, and it’s easy to understand why we’re excited for FX‘s American Horror Story: 1984. In fact, executive producer Tim Minear only confirmed our excitement when he said this about the upcoming season of Murphy and Brad Falchuk‘s horror anthology series American Horror Story:

“I think it’s awesome. I think it’s gonna be really scary but a lot of fun, like it always is. And that if you have a taste for ’80s horror, you’re in for a treat.”

american horror story
FX

So now that we know the theme, who’s going to be in it? Well, now we know! Murphy officially revealed the cast (so far?) for the upcoming ninth season earlier this month – including Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, Angelica Ross, Leslie Grossman, John Carroll Lynch, Gus Kenworthy, Glee‘s Matthew Morrison (with the large…”friend”), DeRon Horton, and Zach Villa.

Last month, the fine folks at FX and American Horror Story offered fans another look at the upcoming season – but with a twist: the network is sponsoring a AHS: 1984 Survivor sweepstakes for a chance for you (and a friend) to attend an AHS experience. Now that the deadline for entering is up, we’re going to start losing “campers” on a weekly basis until the lone survivor is left standing (we’re viewing these as canon and prequel segments).

This week? Turns out “The Sure Thing” isn’t nearly as “sure” of a “thing” as some of you may have thought (post your own joke about John Cusack‘s 1985 comedy below – or look at your screen confused, having no idea what I’m talking about):

The first go-around? Let’s just say that “The Nice Guy” finishes last… by dying first:

On Monday, fans were treated to a new teaser that definitely embraced it’s 80’s slasher film theme. As the sound of John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band‘s “On the Dark Side” and The Motels‘ “Suddenly, Last Summer” ominously played in the background, it appeared our resident maniac-in-the-woods was planning to make this summer at “Camp Redwood” a very deadly one (though we still feel like a twist of some type is coming…):

In case you’re like us and you need to see it for the 97th time, here’s a chance to see the cast in all their ’80’s slasher film glory (though it feels like something else is going on there), followed by reactions from the cast:

As for the status of series mainstays Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters… Peters recently revealed that he would be sitting out this season. Paulson’s work on Murphy’s Netflix series Ratched is making it difficult for her to be involved with the season, but she has not been written off from the season completely.

Here’s What We Know About “American Horror Story: 1984″…

For the ninth cycle of Murphy and Falchuk‘s American Horror Story, the horror anthology is going back to the days of parachute pants, thin leather ties, Frankie telling us to relax… and slasher films. Murphy posted to social media a teaser video for the upcoming season’s theme: AHS 1984 – and then an official teaser for the upcoming season: “The Woods”:

In the teaser above, we see a disturbing nod to the “killer-in-the-woods” theme prevalent in many horror movies of the time – interesting fact: while many think of Friday the 13th as the film that started it all, the theme actually began well before the original film’s 1980 premiere. Of particular interest is the year 1984, which saw the release of such genre classics as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Children of the Corn, and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (okay… “camp classic”).

“Mindhunter” Season 2: Kemper’s Chilling Warning to Ford, Tench – “If He’s Any Good, You Can’t” [TEASER]

by Ray Flook
Corey

Great show.

On August 16, Netflix‘s critically-acclaimed Mindhunter is set to return to the streaming service for its second-season return after some time away. After yesterday’s preview briedly teased just how “Complicated” this season will be, we’re getting a better look at writer and executive producer David Fincher‘s series with a new teaser that brings back a (in)famous face.

In the following clip, Jonathan Groff’s F.B.I. Agent Holden Ford and Holt McCallany’s Agent Bill Tench are back together… back on the job… and back in front of Ed Kemper (Cameron Britton). Returning to Kemper for insight into a new serial killer, the exchanges are a disturbing reminder of the first season – though Kemper’s one line in particular delivers a special chill (no spoilers): “If he’s any good, you can’t.”

Other things to keep your eyeballs on: Wendy Carr’s (Anna Torv) welcome return, Charles Manson (Damon Herriman), David Berkowitz (aka “Son of Sam”), the BTK Strangler – and something we’re not sure we want to see going on in that bathroom…

buck rogers

Mindhunter writer/EP David Fincher first revealed the date during a session of KCRW’s podcast The Treatment before being confirmed by Netflix: The announcement confirms what executive producer Charlize Theron stated on The Howard Stern Show in May 2019 that the second season of the award-winning drama would debut late summer. Created by Joe Penhall, the series was originally renewed shortly after the series’ 2017 debut.

Fincher was on record early as saying that this season of Mindhunter would focus on The Atlanta Child Murders, which resulted in the deaths of at least 28 African-American children, adolescents, and adults between 1979-1981 and kept the country in a grip of fear for two years. FBI agent John E. Douglas (on which Groff’s Holden Ford is based) would eventually catch the killer; and interestingly enough, also earn him an official reprimand over the manner in which the case was handled.

In an interview with Vulture, Douglas confirmed the overall plans for the series as well as some of the familiar names expected to appear:

“At least five years is what they are planning. That’s what David Fincher asked both the actors: ‘Can you give me five years here?’…I know there are supposed to be eight episodes [in the second season]. I know the cases. They are going to have David Berkowitz, as well as Charles Manson. The Atlanta child killings in the early ’80s, they’re gonna be covering that.”

● Fincher will direct the premiere and finale episodes of Mindhunter, while Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James, Killing Me Softly) will helm two episodes, and filmmaker Carl Franklin (House Of Cards, 13 Reasons Why) will direct the remaining episodes – for an expected 8-episode second season (according to The Playlist).

Fincher directed four episodes and executive produced the first season, which takes place in 1979 and focuses on FBI Special Agents Holden Ford (Groff) and Bill Tench (McCallany) during the early days of the FBI’s serial killer profiling unit. The partners interview imprisoned serial killers in order to better understand how they think and operate, which they then apply to solving open cases. But as the agents delve deeper into the minds of the most criminally insane, those around them worry if they can find their way back. And even if they do… can they ever be the same again?

Hannah Gross (Unless) also stars, with Joe Tuttle, Albert Jones, Stacey Roca, Michael Cerveris, Lauren Glazier, and Sierra McClain also aboard – with Britton returning as serial killer Ed Kemper and Herriman doing double-duty as Charles Manson (also playing Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Fincher, Theron, Penhall, Joshua Donen (Gone Girl), and Cean Chaffin (Fight Club) are serving as executive producers.

“The Jesus Rolls:” “Lebowski” Spin-Off Strikes 2020 Date

by Leigh Kade
Corey

Yeeeees.

In 1998’s The Big Lebowksi, John Turturro played a foul-mouthed, sexually aggressive, and all-around terrifying rival bowler to Jeff Bridge’s Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski. While Turturro’s character only appeared in two scenes, his over the top delivery cemented Jesus, and Turturro, into film infamy forever.

John Turturro
Editorial credit: lev radin / Shutterstock.com

Flash forward 20 some-odd years, and John Turturro is writing, directing, and starring in The Jesus Rolls, a spin-off of sorts to the Coen Brothers original. I say spin-off, because the new movie doesn’t appear to have anything to do with Lebowski except the character of Jesus.

The Jesus Rolls also features Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou, Jon Hamm, Susan Sarandon, and Pete Davidson.

Here’s the official synopsis of the film:

“a trio of misfits whose irreverent, sexually charged dynamic evolves into a surprising love story as their spontaneous and flippant attitude towards the past or future backfires time and again, even as they inadvertently perform good deeds. When they make enemies with a gun-toting hairdresser, their journey becomes one of constant escape from the law, from society and from the hairdresser, all while the bonds of their outsider family strengthen.”

It has been confirmed that Turturro, Cannavale, and Tautou will be the trio of misfits. I can only hope that Jon Hamm will play the gun-toting hairdresser.

Here’s Turturro on The Jesus Rolls:

“It feels like a good time to release a transgressive film about the stupidity of men who try and fail and try better to understand and penetrate the mystery of women. I look forward to working with Screen Media and bring our work and the character of the Jesus to American audiences.”

Turturro originally finished filming The Jesus Rolls in 2016, but hasn’t been happy with any of the edits of the film. Supposedly, he is now satisfied with the most recent cut, and has set a goal of releasing the film in early 2020.

Speaking to IndieWire last month, Torturro said part of the problem with the movie was with the content:

“It’s a bit of a racy movie. It shows how stupid men are. That’s what the movie is kinda about – the women are the stronger, more together characters. I had to tweak it a little bit but now I feel really good about it. It’s basically an exploration of Jesus getting out of jail. It’s a comedy but a very human comedy.”

The story is said to take some inspiration from the 1974 French film Going Places, which was the original title of The Jesus Rolls.

“Sandman”: Netflix Orders Neil Gaiman Comic Book Adaptation Straight to Series

by Ray Flook

After years of talk, speculation, and supposed near deals to adapt renowned author Neil Gaiman‘s DC Comics-Vertigo comic book series Sandman – in both the film and television realms- it appears the Warner Bros. TV drama has found a home at Netflix. The move comes more than three years after an effort to bring the work to the big screen via New Line fell through, with the live-action series marking the most expensive television series DC Entertainment has moved forward on during its time.

DC Comics/Warner Bros.

Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy) will write and serve as showrunner on the series, which reeived a direct-to-series order. Gaiman is set to executive produce alongside David Goyer – with both having been attached to the original New Line feature film effort. An episode count is not know, and neither Netflix nor Warner Bros. would comment on the reports.

Gaiman’s multi-genre tale centers on Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, and the Endless, the powerful group of siblings: Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium. Based on reporting from the The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. shopped the television project to a number of networks and streaming services – including “family member” HBO, who reportedly passed on the series based on the expected price tag attached. Netflix made the winning bid, seeing the series as a potential “tent pole” for the streamer as Game of Thrones was for HBO.

cobra kai

In an interview with Collider in early June 2019, Gaiman discussed the importance of timing when adapting a work like Sandman:

“There are definitely things that get made when the time is right. I don’t think it would have been possible to make a good Sandman, when they started trying to make a good Sandman. [Ted] Elliott and [Terry] Rossio wrote their first Sandman scripts in 1996. At the time, I was looking at it and going, ‘This is impossible to make. Nobody is going to spend $100 million on an R-rated, effects-heavy, cerebral fantasy story. It can’t happen.’ At least not back then. But on the other hand, I’ve gone through 25 years of people saying, “So, Sandman is going to get made now.” I’ve learned to go, ‘Yeah, okay, I’m looking forward to it.'”

“Deadly Class” is Dead on TV Forever Because I Loved it Too Much

by Leigh Kade
Corey

Excellent show. Worth a watch for sure.

Deadly Class was my favorite show of 2019. I loved every single freaking minute of it. The cast was fantastic, and the setting was pitch-perfect. When SYFY decided that they needed to pull the plug on the show after its cliff-hanger first season finale, I kept the faith. Obviously, some other network or streaming service out there would see what me and a million other fans already know. Deadly Class was amazing television.

'Deadly Class' is Down, But Not Out... It's Punk Rock Time
DEADLY CLASS — “Reagan Youth” Episode 100 — Pictured: Maria Gabriela de Faria as Maria — (Photo by: Allen Fraser/Syfy)

Now, the dream of Deadly Class living on at another network has been beaten to a pulp by series creator and showrunner Rick Remender. It was a mercy kill, I think, and I can’t imagine how hard it would be to see something you poured your heart and soul into pretty much flushed away by a network that made its fortune with craptastic Sharknado movies. Here’s the killing blow:

I have a confession to make: I think the show’s cancellation is my fault, and it’s because I loved it too much, and I had to be shown not to just adore something fantastic on television. Loving a good show is something that should be punished, because if good shows stay on the air too long, people might realize what utter crap programs like Miracle Workers and Krypton really are.

Actually, that was a cheap shot at Krypton. It’s an okay-to-decent show. I’m just mad and taking potshots. You’re trying your best, Krypton. I’m sorry I yelled at you.

So, here’s what you should do, according to not only Rick Remender, but me, the guy who loved Deadly Class too much and got it canceled. Read the comic series that the television show was based off of. It’s really solid work, and while you might get your heart broken all over again by how closely the show followed the book, you’ll also find some amazing stories.

'Deadly Class' #38: Marcus and Maria Return to Kings Dominion
//Credit: Image Comics

You know that Exam that Master Lin (Benedict Wong) kept going on about? It’s freaking brutal, and amazing. The path Marcus and Maria take after the story told in season one of Deadly Class is legendary. We’re probably better off not getting season two because of how many of those actors we love so much have characters that wouldn’t have survived the season.

So, that’s all she rote. The cancellation fairy has killed my favorite show of 2019, and there isn’t a single network or streaming platform out there with the courage to give Deadly Class a home.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some comics to read.

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” & “The Office”: Rob McElhenney, Steve Carell Make Love, Not War – Want $500M

by Ray Flook

With its 14th season set to premiere on Wednesday, September 25, FXX‘s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is now tied with ABC’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet as the longest-running live-action comedy series – a title Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) would be more than happy to hang behind the bar. Along with that, they’re coming off one helluva’ quality 13th season – considered by fans and critics to be one of its best. Safe to say things are pretty good for The Gang from Paddy’s Pub. Mac’s real-world alter-ego McElhenney even got to play catch with Chase Utley (we’re serious – take a look).

So in other words?

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is Back in Business!

Now about that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia vs. The Office matter…

NBCUniversal/FXX

We mentioned yesteday about how The Gang might be feeling a little full of themselves, with McElhenney posting a video message to Steve Carell and the cast of NBC‘s The Office. With Day and DeVito in tow, McElhenney didn’t hesitate to claim their old Dunder-Mifflin location in the name of Paddy’s:

Now while we were expecting some kind of sick response resulting from some kind of twisted collaboration between Jim and Dwight, instead we got… an olive branch? Having survived “The Anchor Wars,” Carell sees not need for blood to be shed – not when working together could prove so much more fruitful:

Clearly, Carell’s words touch McElhenney’s heart, for not only was peace achieved – a crossover was born! Hulu, Netflix, FX… is $500M really that much? Amazon’s spending more on that for their The Lord of the Rings series – and they don’t have a Cricket!

The Gang from Paddy’s Pub has teamed up with Omaze for a contest where one lucky fan and a friend will visit the set in Los Angeles, possibly be a background extra in a scene, and then share a toast with the cast on the bar set. While no donation or payment is necessary to enter or win, your monies will go to a very worthy, Paddy’s Pub-approved cause: The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, which offers medically-supervised summer camps and programs free of charge to children with serious illnesses and their families throughout the Northeast (more below).

FXX/Omaze

Here’s a look at what you and a friend will win – and for more information, rules, and how to enter, click here:

● Be a featured background extra in an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (if available, and winner only).

● Share a toast with The Gang on the set of Paddy’s Pub.

● Roundtrip airline flight to/from Los Angeles and 4-star hotel stay.

We hope you can read, because we’ve got news. The Always Sunny gang has added a new member: YOU. What’s up, b*tches! You and a friend will join the cast on set to finally find out why it’s always sunny in Philadelphia (they film in LA!)—and be featured in the background as an extra. You’ll film while your friend cheers you on, maybe work on your dance/karate moves and be part of the funniest show on TV for 13 seasons and counting. Then to celebrate, you’ll share a toast with the gang on the infamous Paddy’s Pub set. Cheers! Flights and hotel included. No donation or payment is necessary to enter or win this sweepstakes.

Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp is dedicated to providing “a different kind of healing” to more than 20,000 seriously ill children and their families throughout the Northeast, free of charge, annually. For many participants, they provide multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the camp facility in Connecticut, in more than 40 hospitals and clinics, and through other regional outreach activities across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region. It’s a community that celebrates the fun, friendship and spirit of childhood, where every kid can “raise a little hell.”

Developed by McElhenney and Howerton, and written/executive produced by McElhenney, Howerton, and Day, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was FX’s first comedy hit before moving over to FXX – a fact that FX CEO John Landgraf does not take lightly when he explained at the Television Critics Association (TCA) why the series has been so successful for so long – even after all this time: “It was the fist successful deconstruction and reconstruction of a sitcom,” praising the leads as “five really hilarious degenerates who are most active schemers” as well as the main reason for the show’s success – while also acknowledging the various “social issues” that the series addressed so effectively in the past.

Another bonus this pre-season? No “drama” regrading Howerton’s involvement in the 14th season, telling The Hollywood Reporter back in March 2019 that although work on the upcoming season wasn’t starting until later in the year, there was a very good chance there would be more Dennis in fans’ lives when the series returns: “We’re in talks about season 14 right now. The writers room on that is going to start in a couple months.” As for Howerton’s Dennis being a larger part of that? “That’s the plan.”

‘Silicon Valley’: HBO Powering Down Series After 6 Seasons

by Ray Flook

A little over a year after Mike Judge and Alan Berg‘s Emmy-winning Silicon Valley was renewed for a sixth season by HBO, the cable giant confirmed the upcoming season will be its last. Currently in the pre-production stage, season 6 will consist of seven episodes and is expected to premiere later in 2019.

Here’s what Judge and Berg had to say about the decision:

“Silicon Valley has been a career and life highlight for us. We’ll miss it desperately, but we’ve always let Pied Piper’s journey guide the way, and Season 6 seems to be the fitting conclusion. We are forever indebted to our incredible cast, crew, and partners at HBO. At a certain point, there’s only so much we can do to make the world a better place.”

– Mike Judge & Alan Berg, executive producers/showrunners

The show takes a comic look at the modern-day epicenter of the high-tech gold rush, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success. A collaboration between Mike Judge and Alec Berg, SILICON VALLEY’s season five cast includes Thomas Middleditch, Zach Woods, Kumail Nanjiani, Martin Starr, Josh Brener, Amanda Crew, Matt Ross, Suzanne Cryer and Jimmy O. Yang.

HBO’s Silicon Valley stars Thomas Middleditch as Richard, Zach Woods as Jared, Kumail Nanjiani as Dinesh, Martin Starr as Gilfoyle, Amanda Crew as Monica, Jimmy O. ‘Clownado’ Trailer: It’s Exactly What the Title Suggests

by Chris Evangelista
Corey

Doooooooool.

clownado trailer

The world is in crisis. Climate change is out of control. Governments are collapsing. And now, there’s a movie called Clownado. I’d like to say that we, as a society, don’t deserve such a thing. But the fact of the matter is, we do. We’ve brought this on ourselves: a movie where demon clowns have the power to control tornadoes. Watch the Clownado trailer below…if you dare.

Clownado Trailer

What’s scarier than, uh…tornadoes? How about clowns? Now how about clowns and tornadoes together? Pretty damn freaky, right? Think it couldn’t happen? Guess again – it’s Clownado time!

Can you intentionally set out to make a movie that’s “so bad it’s good”? I’m sure you can try – but whether or not you can be successful is another matter. The Sharknado films have tried to capture that weirdo magic with several sequels, and while people sure do love to live-tweet through them, I’d argue than none of them can hold a candle to a genuinely “so bad it’s good” flick.

So what’s the difference? Intent. Every legitimately awful-yet-amazing movie is so memorable because the people involved were trying to make a good movie. We’re talking about inept weirdos who set out with no knowledge of how movies work, and still try their damnedest to make the best movie they possibly can. That, my friends, is how you end up with a real so-bad-it’s-good experience.

Which brings us to Clownado. It’s clear this extravaganza is aiming for intentionally cheesy results, although it doesn’t appear to be going into full-blown Sharknado territory (despite the title). In Clownado, “Cursed demonic circus clowns set out on a vengeful massacre using tornadoes. A stripper, Elvis impersonator, truck driver, teen runaway, and a dude get caught in the supernatural battle between femme fatal and the boss clown from hell.”

Sounds about right.

I have doubt the folks involved with Clownado were having fun, and that they want their audience to have fun too. And that’s fine! Maybe Clownado will actually turn out to be an entertaining, funny movie about killer clowns using tornadoes (even though the tornadoes don’t get much attention in the trailer). Clownado hails from writer-director Todd Sheets, whose credits include Zombie Bloodbath 2Zombie Rampage 2Bimbos in Time, and more. Again, sounds about right.

Linnea Quigley (Return of the Living Dead) stars along with Eileen Dietz, Rachel Lagen, John O’Hara, and Joel D. Wynkoop. Look for Clownado sometime this summer.

This is pretty solid.

With billion-dollar hits like Furious 7 and Aquaman, James Wan is a director who can do anything he wants. And while Aquaman 2 is still on the horizon, he’ll bring a different comic book adaptation to life first.

Netflix is bringing ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Back- With a Twist

by Leigh Kade
Corey

Love it.

Netflix found themselves with a curious sort of hit with the Black Mirror “Bandersnatch” episode, which allowed viewers to make decisions with their remotes that would affect how the story played out. It was revolutionary television, even if it was at times a bit frustrating and uneven at times. I still found myself watching multiple times to see the different outcomes.

Now, Netflix is coming back with another interactive special, this time revolving around Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The Ellie Kemper led series has already concluded its run on the streaming giant, but that doesn’t mean the show is done forever, right?

New ways to tell a story can mean new life for a show. Here’s series co-creator Tina Fey with more on the new special:

We’re thrilled to announce that we’re about to start production on an all-new Interactive Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt special, set to debut on Netflix in 2020. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was one of the first original comedy series on Netflix, and now it will be its first interactive comedy event. Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes. I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one of those shows that breaks me at least once an episode, with some of the best comedic performances on television. With an ensemble cast including Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane, the show managed to combine long-form comic storytelling with some truly bizarre theater of the mind scenarios.

The show has been nominated for 18 Primtime Emmy Awards since it debuted on Netflix in 2015. The new Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt interactive special will debut sometime in 2020.

There is no word yet on how absurd the options for the story will be, but I’m willing to bet it’s going to get way out there.
