I know we’re all fired up about the Rogue One trailer today, but take a moment to watch the trailer for Time Traveling Bong, too—Comedy Central’s new pot-fueled science fiction special from Broad City’s Paul Downs and Ilana Glazer. It airs on 4/20 (obviously), and it looks hilariously insane.
Although the groundswell support of Donald Trump may indicate otherwise, sometimes impressive (and impressively hilarious) results happen when you open things up to a popular vote. The Natural Environment Research Council discovered this when it posed an online contest to name its $300 million new research vessel. The current frontrunner: “Boaty McBoatface.” NERC maintains that an “expert panel” will make the final decision, and in the meantime is having fun with the nautical moniker by tweeting hashtags #BoatyMcBoatface #NameOurShip.

The life cycle of Smash Mouth’s “All Star” is a fascinating one. The second single from the band’s 1999 album Astro Lounge, the song was a huge hit for the one-time ska band. True to its era, the song’s video featured a tie-in to the Ben Stiller box office flop Mystery Men, as well as an appearance from a young Dane Cook, as the band strutted through a delightfully suburban landscape. Since then, the song has taken on a second life as both a muse and a musical punchline. It’s been mashed-uptime and again, and also served as the soundtrack to Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell’s expletive-laden rant at the Taste Of Fort Collins festival that’s affectionately known as the “bread incident,” as well as that time he ate a bunch of eggs with Guy Fieri.
In 2009, overwhelmed by the ovation he received at his own Hall Of Fame induction, basketball legend Michael Jordan had himself a good cry. Not just a good cry, but a great cry. Maybe the greatest cry of all time. His eyes turned blood red, and tears streamed down his face like little waterfalls. His face all but melted off his skull. While the moment may have been incredibly powerful and poignant at the time, the image of the weeping Jordan is hilarious when taken out of context. Televised golf has always had something of an absurdist vibe to it. There’s so much dead air time. The announcers speak quietly despite having no need to do so. A self-serious nature hangs over the entire production… so it lends itself well to parody, something Adam Sandler exploited to good effect in Happy Gilmore. There’s none of the wacky hijinks or crudity of that film at work in The Adult Swim Golf Classic, but it works marvelously well, in large part thanks to being played almost completely straight. Aping old-school golf programming down to the details—akin to the earliest days of Shell’s Wonderful World Of Golf—the half-hour special delivers continuous laughs, based almost wholly on one fact: Jon Daly and Adam Scott really suck at golf.

Say what you will about Mel Gibson, but we’re still fans. Sure his off-screen antics were troublesome to family and friends, but for the rest of us — those of us who don’t know him personally — all we really have are his performances and films. Mad Max, Gallipoli, The Bounty, Lethal Weapon, Tequila Sunrise, Maverick, Ransom, Payback, The Patriot, Signs, Get the Gringo. The guy makes good movies, typically playing characters involved in violent situations, and now the first trailer has dropped for his latest film where he plays a character involved in a violent situation.
Blood Father sees Gibson as John Link, an ex-con who works as a tattoo artist out of his trailer on the outskirts of an American desert. His teenage daughter’s been missing, but when she suddenly reappears it’s with trouble on her tail in the form of drug dealers who want her dead. We first reported on the film just over two years ago, and it’s finally gotten both a trailer and a release date of August 25th… in Australia. Check out the first trailer below.
I’m in. Gibson is at his grizzled best here and definitely looks the part of a man with a crime-filled past and future. He seems very much at home with dishing out the deadly force in the name of protecting/avenging his child — something he’s done before in The Patriot, Ransom, and Edge of Darkness. His post-“troubles” films haven’t done all that well at the box office, but you should really check out Get the Gringo if you haven’t yet. Erin Moriarty (Captain Fantastic) plays his daughter, and the pair are joined by the likes of William H. Macy, Diego Luna, and Michael Parks.
Director Jean-Francois Richet lost some good will with his English-language debut, 2005’s Assault on Precinct 13 remake, but divorced from our love for John Carpenter’s classic his film is actually a solid action/thriller. The better entry on his resume though is his two-film crime epic, Mesrine, which tells a grand tale punctuated with brutal acts of violence. Blood Father‘s script, by Peter Craig (The Town) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton), is an adaptation of Craig’s own novel.
Gibson’s other 2016 release, Hacksaw Ridge, is his long-awaited return behind the camera — his first since 2006’s Apocalypto. The film is a World War II-set tale about the first conscientious objector and features a pretty solid cast including Andrew Garfield, Teresa Palmer, Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving, and Sam Worthington.
Blood Father opens in Australia this August, and we’re hoping a U.S. release isn’t too far behind.

In what was either an oversight or an early April Fools’ joke, Netflix forgot to mention that its April lineup included the Warner Brothers and their Warner Sister, Dot. But thanks to Daily Campus, we now know that Animaniacsis streaming in its entirety. (To be fair, maybe Netflix was probably just really excited about getting the word out for new episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.) The animated series ran for five seasons (split between Fox Kids and The WB), racking up 99 episodes in total. ’90s kids, who are already havinga great year, will undoubtedly be delighted to check in once more with Wakko, Yakko, the aforementioned Dot, and the Godpigeon, as well as Pinky and the Brain (who had their own spinoff).
After bringing Garth Ennis’ Preacher to the screen with the upcoming AMC series, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Neal Moritz are tackling another dark and violent comic book by Ennis on cable television. Cinemax has put in development The Boys, from the Preacher team of Rogen and Goldberg’s Point Grey, Moritz’s Original Film and Sony TV.
Developed by Rogen, Goldberg and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, and to be written by Kripke based on the graphic novel written by Ennis and illustrated by Darick Robertson, the series is set in a time where most of the superheroes are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world. It centers on a CIA squad, known informally as “the boys,” whose job is to keep watch on the proliferation of superheroes and, if necessary, eliminate some of them. Rogen and Goldberg, who helmed the Preacher pilot, are set to direct.
