Lyft Introduces Carpool Option To Help Drivers Earn Money Off Commutes, Rolls Out Waze Integration Nationwide

by Bertel King, Jr.

Screenshot from 2016-03-30 16-58-59

Using the carpool lane can cut time out of commutes, but it comes with the hassle of coordinating with another worker. That's annoying. It's so annoying that Lyft is now willing to pay people to do it. Sort of.

Lyft Carpool is a new way for drivers to potentially make hundreds of dollars a month driving to work like they already do, as long as they're willing to drive someone who pays a few bucks to sit in the passenger seat.

‘Vice Principals’ Teaser Trailer: Danny McBride and Walton Goggins Fight It Out

by Angie Han
Corey

Yes!

Vice Principals teaser trailer

Eastbound & Down wrapped up its fourth and final season in 2013, but Danny McBride fans with HBO subscriptions will have something new to look forward this summer. Vice Principals stars McBride and Walton Goggins as a pair of (you guessed it) vice principals who work together at Lincoln High. Although “together” might not exactly be the right word here, seeing as they’re more interested in destroying each other than in collaborating with one another. Watch the hilarious first Vice Principals teaser trailer after the jump.

Described as “the story of a high school and the two people who almost run it,” Vice Principals looks like another gem in HBO’s lineup. The two vice principals unleash what looks like total anarchy on their school, and while it’s probably terrible for the kids trying to get an education there, it looks very satisfying for those of us watching at home. The Vice Principals teaser trailer offers just a minute and half of footage, but it’s enough to get a sense of the show’s sense of humor: rude, awkward, and chaotic.

Goggins and McBride are so perfect together, it’s kind of surprising to realize they’ve never starred together before. And they’re incredibly well suited for their individual roles as well. Goggins brings his slightly creepy charm to the role of vice principal Lee Russell, while McBride’s Neal Gamby is the very stereotype of a hopelessly uncool vice principal, right down to those dorky little sweater vests. HBO seems pretty confident in their new show, too — they’ve already ordered 18 episodes of Vice Principals, to be split across two seasons.

Rounding out the cast are Georgia King (The New Normal) as an English teacher, Busy Philipps as Neal’s ex-wife, Shea Whigham as her new husband, Kimberly Hebert Gregory as the principal, and Sheaun McKinney as a cafeteria worker. Vice Principals will screen at SXSW before premiering this July on HBO.

MovieSwap: Finally A Subscription Service That Allows You To Watch Any Movie Ever?

by Peter Sciretta
Corey

Interesting. But probably not doable.

MovieSwap

I check Kickstarter every day. I often back projects in the tabletop and tech areas, but I also will check to see what projects are popular on the site each week. The other day I came across a project called MovieSwap, which has already met its funding goal on the crowdfunding website. So what is it?

The French company that is developing the service claims that “MovieSwap is the first universal movie library, totally powered by the crowd, to watch and swap films without constraints.”

What if you had an unlimited access to the LARGEST ONLINE MOVIE LIBRARY EVER? A community based library, where you could watch any movie online. A library where you could swap films with contributors all over the world and discover an infinite number of stories. This is the revolutionary idea behind MovieSwap.

But how can a service that allows subscribers to watch any movie online be legal? Is it legal?

ZZ137D84A4

Here is how MovieSwap claims to work: Users mail their DVDs to MovieSwap, where the company will register them on behalf of their owners and put the films into the cloud. The DVDs will be stored in the MovieSwap warehouses, and the users can remotely play them on any device across their personal libraries. So far this sounds like UltraViolet, which you probably know as one of the most annoying things to use, or as a cloud-based digital rights locker for movies and television shows. Anyways, that much seems legal.

Where MovieSwap attempts to change things is that users in the service can legally lend, swap, or offer a DVD to a friend through its remote playback technology which would also give the “full DVD experience including bonuses, deleted scenes, director’s commentaries, and other unique features not available when streaming videos online.” The company claims that because each member is contributing movies in some way, “this process ensures that users are always swapping one DVD for another, thus making the process legal.” The streaming service will be available on PC, Mac, Android tablets and on TV thanks to a HDMI SwapStick.

So imagine a Netflix-style interface that allows you to watch any of the DVDs in this collective collection (assuming that rights managed copy isn’t currently being watched by another user). It almost sounds too good to be true, because if enough people use the service, as a subscriber you’d have access to watch any movie ever on demand. And they claim to have 200,000 DVDs in their library already.

A lot of local libraries offer physical movie libraries, but what if you could watch any movie you want, any time you want, wherever you want for one subscription fee? Sounds like an awesome idea, and a great deal, but it also sounds like the sort of thing that would cost the movie studios a lot of potential income.

So is it legal? We don’t know for sure. MovieSwap claims it is, and their reasoning may be hard to argue with… but something just smells fishy.

Variety talked to an exec at a large studio who claims that the service is “not in any way authorized to either rip or stream our content.” The MPAA declined to comment to the trade paper and no one will go on the record and say it’s illegal. As the trade paper notes, their might be a precedent against this kind of service, as in 2000 a bunch of major music labels sued MP3.com over its service that let users stream songs over the Internet after registering their CDs. MP3.com reportedly eventually settled with the record companies.

And things get a little more complicated in how users subscribe or participate in the service. Users choose to either contribute money to receive some DVDs in their digital library, or send in their physical DVD collections in exchange for monthly credits for the service.

When you create your MovieSwap account, a first DVD will be provided for you: it allows you to swap in the huge MovieSwap library. You can also send us your own DVDs. The more you send the more benefits you get. For example if you suscribe to the DVD GIVER Pack On Kickstarter and send us 50 DVDs or more, you will receive a free HDMI Slapstick. … Every DVD you send us will be locked at first and therefore won’t be available to other users. Only if you want to, you can unlock them, free them: you will then allow the MovieSwap library to grow and you’ll get some exclusive benefits like the acquisition of rare and new films.

MovieSwap currently has raised $42,715 from 1,754 backers (over their initial goal of $38,464) with 35 days to go. What do you think? Is this legal? Would you participate in a service like MovieSwap?

‘Better Call Saul’ Will Be Back for Season 3

by Angie Han
Corey

Love this show.

Better Call Saul Season 2

Jimmy McGill’s transformation into Saul Goodman has been a wonder to watch: precise, deliberate, gorgeously shot, impressively acted, and more than a little heartbreaking. And the evolution is going to continue for at least another year. AMC has just renewed Better Call Saul for a third season, just as the series hits the halfway point of its second.

AMC and Sony Pictures Television announced today that Better Call Saul has been renewed for a ten-episode third season. Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould will return as showrunners, and will also continue to serves as executive producers alongside Breaking Bad vets Mark Johnson, Melissa Bernstein, and Thomas Schnauz. Said AMC’s Charles Collier in a statement:

What Vince, Peter, Bob and the entire team have accomplished with ‘Better Call Saul’ is truly rare and remarkable. They have taken one of the most iconic, immersive and fan-obsessive (in the best possible way) shows in television history and created a prequel that stands on its own. Watching Jimmy McGill’s thoughtful, melodic and morally flexible transformation into Saul Goodman is entertaining and delighting millions of fans, whether their starting point was ‘Breaking Bad’ or not. This series has its own feel, pace and sensibility and we can’t wait to see what this incredibly talented group comes up with next in season three.

The renewal shouldn’t come as a big surprise. AMC renewed Better Call Saul for a second season before the first season had even debuted, demonstrating a lot of confidence in its Breaking Bad spinoff/prequel. Since its debut, Better Call Saul has performed solidly in the ratings and even better with critics. The first season of Better Call Saul was nominated for seven Emmys, SAG, and a Golden Globe.

Better Call Saul‘s initial appeal was obvious — it was a way for fans, and the network, to continue with the Breaking Bad franchise through the lens of one of the show’s liveliest supporting characters. But it’s pretty quickly established itself as much, much more than just a Breaking Bad copy. Jimmy’s emerged as a tragic antihero in his own right, and one that’s very different from Walter White, even if they end up mired in the muck together in Breaking Bad.

And thankfully, the show’s writers and producers seem to put a lot of faith in Bob Odenkirk‘s ability to shoulder his own series as Jimmy. Callbacks and cameos to Breaking Bad are used sparingly and judiciously, and it borrows a lot of the visual language and vibe of the earlier series while adding some flair of its own. Put simply, the journey from Jimmy McGill to Saul Goodman has proved a riveting (if sometimes devastating) one, and we can’t wait to embark on the next step of it.

This Stretch of Route 66 Plays "America the Beautiful" When You Drive at the Right Speed

by John Farrier

(Video Link)

It's called the Singing Road. Follow Route 66 west of Tijeras, New Mexico. Slow down to 45 miles per hour and drive over the rumble strip on the side of the road. The bumps are arranged so that they will vibrate your car's tires to the tune of "America the Beautiful."

The National Geographic Channel and the New Mexico Department of Transportation created the Singing Road in 2014 to serve as a roadside attraction, as well as persuade drivers to avoid speeding. ABC News (auto-start video) reported at the time:

The Singing Road was constructed by Sand Bar Construction on old Route 66, just west of Tijeras and east of Albuquerque. A mathematician from Tigress Productions created the attraction for the National Geographic Channel series.

"They started work on Monday and finished on Tuesday," Dosher said. "It's remarkable the speed in which they finished it."

This video from the National Geographic Channel explains how they built the Singing Road. It's a remarkably precise work of engineering.

The Discount Rules at This Frozen Yogurt Place Are Awesome

by John Farrier

The Bone!!!!

(Image via caross)

Mr. Yogato is a frozen yogurt restaurant in Washington, D.C. You can earn discounts on your tab pretty easily.

Question: do the discounts stack? For example, if I get a head stamp, deliver the Braveheart speech, Stump Steve on Seinfeld trivia, re-enact the "Thriller" dance, dress like Bjorn Borg, answer a trivia question successfully, sing "Mr. Roboto," and wear a kicball uniform, do I get my frozen yogurt for free?

We don't have these kinds of discounts at the NeatoShop. But according to legend, if you capture Alex Santoso, tie him up with a red rope, and tickle his belly 3 times, he has to grant you a wish.

Corey

Love Kung Fu Hustle. Love this scene.

If one unintentional stabbing is funny, just wait until they get to the fourth

In Kung Fu Hustle, Stephen Chow gives a master class on how to perfectly escalate a bit. Take, for instance, this scene (which doesn’t even need much context to be funny) where the man with the mustache (Chow) would very much like to kill, or at least wound, his evil landlord. It doesn’t quite go as planned. it’s almost a classic silent-comedy routine, except with a lot more sharp objects penetrating human flesh. Maybe the Three Stooges are a better analogue, though I find Chow’s approach to humorous suffering much more elegant.

Alien Day To Arrive With Replica Ripley Reeboks

by Erik Amaya

ripleyreebokFollowing on the success of Star Wars‘s May The Fourth Day and last year’s celebration of Back to the Future II‘s October 21st, 2015 date becoming a reality, 20th Century Fox intends to make April 26’s Alien Day. The connection? 4/26 syncs up with planet LV-426 as seen in Aliens.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the day will be celebrated with a Twitter contest, screenings at theaters in twenty cities, including some Alamo Drafthouse locations and the re-release of Ripley’s Reebok footwear from Aliens. The company will also release the mid-top version as worn by Bishop. THR reports Ripley’s high-tops were released for a short in 1988, but will be released to commemorate a day of Alien celibrations.

The replica shoes will certainly be cause for some to celebrate, but I’ll admit to being curious about Bishop’s shoes as I’m not much of a high-top guy. Both versions will be available at select Reebok locations and the company’s online store.

The day will also feature the release of new Alien related comic books, digital games, action figures and high-end collectibles. NECA, for example, will release the first ever Lieutenant Vasquez and Newt figures; as well as the release of a Kenner toy-Inspired Ellen Ripley figure.

Newswire: Salt N Pepa, Coolio (and, uh, Vanilla Ice) to headline “I Love The ‘90s” tour

by Katie Rife

Cue the hip-hop remix of “Turn, Turn, Turn”: The once-cutting edge ‘90s revival has calcified into just another cog in the wheel (in the sky, right Journey fans?!) of the nostalgia-industrial complex. Rolling Stone confirms as much by reporting that Salt N Pepa, Coolio, and Kid ‘N Play, along with Biz Markie, Color Me Badd, All-4-One, Rob Base, Tone Loc, Young MC, and Kool Moe Dee (and, uh, Vanilla Ice), will all be donning their freshest oversized overalls and hitting the road this spring and summer (and fall) for the so-called “I Love The ’90s” tour.

“Of course all these artists love the ’90s,” you may be thinking. “They were all making lots of money back then.” And that is true. But 2016 is working out pretty well for all involved as well, apparently, since Rolling Stone reports that the tour began as a series of one-off shows earlier this ...
