If you need some good news today, then here’s some for you: two Doug Liman films are coming out next year. Over a year ago the Swingers and Edge of Tomorrow director reunited with Tom Cruisefor the delayedAmerican Made, but he also has a thriller starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals)and John Cena (Trainwreck) coming out soon. That movie, The Wall, is set in one location and about two soldiers pinned down by a sniper.

If this is the first you’ve heard of Liman’s thriller, that’s maybe because it got made this year relatively quickly and quietly. Taylor-Johnson was cast in the project just back in May, and seven months later, we already have a trailer for the first original film from Amazon Studios. The studio bought Dwain Worrell‘s script, which made the 2014 Black List. The Wall was originally described as the smaller picture Liman was going to shoot before Gambit, which he ended up leaving.
The Wall trailer calls to mind other single location thrillers, but maybe Liman, a director whose work is often fresh and exciting, will bring something new to the table:
The first minute of the trailer builds tension well to the moment where everything goes wrong for Taylor-Johnson and Cena’s characters. When Cena’s character says, “The scope is an extension of my eye, the trigger is an extension of my fist, the rifle is an extension of me, and I strike you down,” is the highlight of the trailer. Cena’s tone intensifying, the music growing louder, and the faster cutting — that’s when The Wall looks like another movie from Liman to see in a theater. Cena showed a new side of himself in Trainwreck, for a performance he maybe should’ve gotten more credit for, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with a director as talented as Liman.

All we’d really had in the way of visuals so far around the Noah Hawley (Fargo) helmed Legion was the trailer that had debuted back at the San Diego Comic-Con. Now that’s changed, and not only do we have a shiny new trailer from FX, but we also have confirmation of it’s premiere date.
Slated to air on February 8th at 10 p.m., the show stars Dan Stevens as the titular character. In the original Marvel comic universe, he is the mutant son of Professor Charles Xavier and Gabrielle Haller and suffers from a severe mental illness, including a form of dissociative identity disorder, with each of his personas controlling one of his many superpowers.
In the FX adaptation, which is being set in an alternate universe from the rest of the Marvel television and film universe, he is a schizophrenic being afflicted with auditory and visual hallucinations. Being in and out of hospitals for most of his life, but another new patient reveals that what’s been happing might be more than what’s just been in his head.
Legion also stars Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Fargo alum Jean Smart, Katie Aselton, Jeremie Harris, Bill Irwin and Amber Midthunder.
After FX first got fan’s hopes up when it ordered a script for development back in May, it looks like the network is ready to take the next step with creation of the pilot for Mayans MC. Sons of Anarchy’s original writer, director, and producer Kurt Sutter will coming back in again which should help keep the original feel and vibe going strong.
With SoA being FX’s highest rated series to day, it’d been a foregone conclusion that it wasn’t so much of if a spin-off would happen, but when. After SoA’s completion, Sutter had moved on to the historical drama series The Bastard Executioner, but when FX nixed that after one season, he found he had time back on his hands again to start mulling on how to kick-start back into the SoA universe.
Set after the end of SoA’s season seven finale, Mayans MC will focus on EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC character along the California/Mexico border.
This time, Sutter won’t be writing alone, back when the script had been ordered, he teamed up with Elgin James, which will continue to co-write and co-executive produce on Mayans. In speaking with Deadline, Sutter said, I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions.”
Well with production slated to begin in Spring of ’17, we could see it as early as the Fall. A lot will depend if FX proceeds with a season order directly, if they make it a one shot to gauge interest, or if they film it and then sit on it until the need a series to fill a programming slot.
