It’s the biggest “Star Wars” news to emerge for some time — on Tuesday morning, filmmaker J.J. Abrams announced the cast for his upcoming space adventure, confirming some of the names that had been the subject of online speculation for some time.
Adam Driver, best known for his role in HBO’s “Girls,” and Oscar Isaac, who won considerable acclaim for his turn in the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis,” will appear alongside Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson, performance capture expert Andy Serkis and venerable Swedish thespian Max von Sydow. Also in the mix are John Boyega, known for his work in the fan favorite film “Attack the Block,” and newcomer Daisy Ridley.
Additionally, the principal actors from Lucas’ original saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker, are set for director J.J. Abrams’ new film, reprising their iconic roles.
In a statement released on StarWars.com, Abrams said, “It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

Of course, details about precisely which characters the new actors will portray remain closely guarded, as does the plot of the movie, which is being scripted by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan.
The lack of diversity among the new cast has been noted by many, however, and some have expressed concern about being disappointed by the film when it opens in theaters Dec. 18, 2015.
One comedian has even tried to start a movement named for arguably the most maligned character created by George Lucas, with a #istandwithjarjar hashtag.
