‘The Lost Boys’ Series Gets Pilot Order at The CW

by Mary Anne Butler

YOU’RE A CREATURE OF THE NIGHT MICHAEL! A GODDAMN VAMPIRE! OHHHHH YOU WAIT TIL MOM FINDS OUT.

The CW has ordered, we kid you not, a new tv series pilot based on The Lost Boys, the 1987 teen vampire film from Joel Schumacher.

This report comes to us from Variety, who say Heather Mitchell of Scandal will write the pilot. Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas serving as EP along with Dan Etheridge of Spondoolie Productions, as well as Mike Karz and Bill Bindley of Gulfstream Television. Rebecca Franko of Spondoolie will produce. Spondoolie and Gulfstream will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.

In the original film (with one of the best soundtracks, btw), Teenage brothers Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) move with their mother (Dianne Wiest) to a small town in northern California. While the younger Sam meets a pair of kindred spirits in geeky comic-book nerds Edward (Corey Feldman) and Alan (Jamison Newlander) “The Frog Brothers”, the angst-ridden Michael soon falls for Star (Jami Gertz), but she kind of already belongs to David (Kiefer Sutherland), leader of a local gang of vampires. Sam and his new friends must save Michael and Star from the undead, and their mother from her would-be suitor who may or may not be the father of the local brood of vampires.

No word on casting yet, but we’ll let you know what else we hear.

The Umbrella Academy: The Hargreeves Family Goes Super Dysfunctional [OFFICIAL TRAILER]

by Ray Flook
Corey

Yes!!!!!

With Netflix‘s series adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá‘s graphic novel series The Umbrella Academy set to make its dysfunctional debut on February 15th, fans are getting a chance to rest their eyeballs on the very first official trailer for the series  –  right here:

On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world.

But not everything went according to plan.

In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death. But the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

Netflix

The Umbrella Academy is a 10-episode series based on the graphic novels of the same name created and written by Way, illustrated by Ba, and published by Dark Horse Comics. Netflix’s adaptation follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (The Umbrella Academy) — The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror, and The White Violin — as they work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.

Netflix

Netflix’s version of the Hargreeves family includes: Ellen Page (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as sister Vanya, who appears to manifest no super powers but has an amazingly strong interest in music; Tom Hopper (Game of Thrones) as Luther/Spaceboy, leader of The Umbrella Academy; Robert Sheehan (Bad Reputation) as shoeless speaker-with-the-dead Klaus Hargreeves/The Séance; Emmy Raver-Lampman (Wicked) as Allison/The Rumor, who can alter reality with her lies; David Castaneda (Blindspot) as Diego/The Kraken, the reckless and rebellious member of the family; Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) as Number Five/The Boy, the family’s time-travelling, perpetually young brain; Colm Feore (House of Cards) as world-renowned billionaire industrialist and eccentric inventor Sir Reginald Hargreeves; and Adam Godley (Breaking Bad) as Pogo, a genetically engineered, tweed jacket-wearing, talking chimpanzee and family advisor/mentor.

The Umbrella Academy also stars award-winning singer/actress Mary J. Blige (Mudbound) as ruthless, time travelling hitwoman Cha-Cha; Cameron Britton (Mindhunter) as her deadly efficient partner Hazel; Ashley Madekwe (Revenge) as Detective Patch, a driven, fast riser within the police department investigating a series of murders – and The Academy; John Magaro (The Big Short) as Leonard Peabody, who begins to take music lessons from Vanya and sees something special in this constantly dismissed wallflower and Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) as The Handler, a composed and confident leader of a mysterious, bureaucratic company.

Jeff Bridges Teases Something The Dude-Related Coming in February

by Mary Anne Butler

We have no idea what Jeff Bridges is teasing, but we’re pretty sure it has something to do with The Dude from The Big Lebowski.

Bridges just tweeted this teasing video, where he dons the signature sweater and sunglasses of his character from The Coen Brothers cult-favorite film from 1998:

In the original film, Jeff `The Dude’ Leboswki is mistaken for Jeffrey Lebowski, who is The Big Lebowski. Which explains why he’s roughed up and has his precious rug peed on. In search of recompense, The Dude tracks down his namesake, who offers him a job. His wife has been kidnapped and he needs a reliable bagman. Aided and hindered by his pals Walter Sobchak, a Vietnam vet, and Donny, master of stupidity.

Could this maybe be a sequel?! The 2019 Lewboski Fest doesn’t happen til July, so it’s probably not something related to that.

The date in question is Super Bowl Sunday, so it could very well be a trailer drop during the sportsball event.

We’ll let you know what we find out!

Michael Gandolfini to Play Young Tony in ‘The Sopranos’ Movie

by Mary Anne Butler

This casting news is a bit of an emotional roller coaster- The Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark have cast young Tony Soprano, and there is most definitely a family connection.

Michael Gandolfini
Photo by Kathy Hutchins / Shutterstock.com

Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Gandolfini (who played the Jersey mobster in the HBO series), will be taking on the role of young Tony in the upcoming prequel film.

Most recently appearing in HBO’s The Deuce, Michael Gandolfini won the role the old fashioned way, auditioning just like everyone else.

Deadline says the filmmakers engaged in an extensive audition process to find the young Tony before Gandolfini won the role. Insiders said that his screen presence, mastery of Tony’s mannerisms, coupled with his resemblance to the elder Gandolfini made him the standout choice for the role because no one there understood the character better.

Gandolfini said in a statement (also to Deadline):

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.”

We’ll let you know when we hear any additional news about the production.

Edgar Wright Confirms “First Draft of ‘Baby Driver 2’ Exists”

by Mary Anne Butler

Filmmaker Edgar Wright just confirmed to Empire Magazine that a first draft of Baby Driver 2 exists. Unfortunately, that’s kind of all we know, as the quote comes from the publication’s upcoming Captain Marvel issue.

Filmmaker Edgar Wright
Photo by Matteo Chinellato / Shutterstock.com

Empire says:

“A first draft of Baby Driver 2 exists,” he confirms, adding that it introduces a whole swathe of new characters following the original’s high body-count, and “takes the story further”.

The feature [article] has Wright speaking about his next film as well, one he’s describing as a straight-up psychological horror-thriller co-written with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Wright mentions two main influences for this upcoming project, Don’t Look Now and Roman Polanski‘s Repulsion. He also reveals it’ll be set in London, and will feature a female lead. It’ll shoot this summer.

Wright commented:

“I realized I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.”

We’ll let you know what else we hear about these projects.

The Sopranos Creator David Chase Confirms Young Tony Soprano in Prequel Film

by Ray Flook

HBO‘s groundbreaking series The Sopranos is celebrating its 20th anniversay this week – let that sink in for a minute as you think back to where you were (and what you were wearing) in 1999. Looks like you’re not the only one thinking about the past, with series creator David Chase moving ahead with series prequel film The Many Saints of Newark.

sopranos chase tony film
HBO

Co-writing with series alum Lawrence Konner through New Line and Warner Bros., Chase has series director Alan Taylor helming the feature with Alessandro Nivola on board as Christopher’s (Michael Imperioli) father/mob soldier Dickie Moltisanti. As a refresher, Dickie was killed by a crooked cop in the 1970’s (the same crooked cop Christopher would kill on the day the officer retired from the police force) – but it will be Dickie’s life leading up to that moment that will serve as the film’s focus on the origins of organized crime in the turbulence of racial tensions between African-Americans and Italian-Americans in Newark, New Jersey.

Speaking to Deadline Hollywood exclusively as part of their oral history on The Sopranos and ahead of this week’s The Sopranos Film Festival at the IFC Center in New York City, Chase offered some more details of what fans can expect:

● When the film was first announced, fans asked the obvious question that Chase can now confirm the answer to: a young Tony Soprano will be part of the film: “The movie will deal with the tensions between the blacks and whites at the time, and Tony Soprano will be part of this, but as a kid.”

Using Tony’s boyhood as the backdrop, Chase was also able to explore his interest in the social history of Newark:

“I was interested in Newark and life in Newark at that time. I used to go to down there every Saturday night for dinner with my grandparents. But the thing that interested me most was Tony’s boyhood. I was interested in exploring that.”

● With his parents originally from the city, Chase’s interest in Newark helped form the social tapestry for the film – a film that probably wouldn’t have gotten made otherwise:

“I was against [the movie] for a long time and I’m still very worried about it, but I became interested in Newark, where my parents came from, and where the riots took place. I was living in suburban New Jersey at the time that happened, and my girlfriend was working in downtown Newark. I was just interested in the whole Newark riot thing. I started thinking about those events and organized crime, and I just got interested in mixing those two elements.”

● While he knows there are those out there ready to label the film a sacrilege (“Yeah, I feel they’re out there with shotguns, just waiting”) Chase is looking forward to showing The Sopranos fans the “good old days” of organized crime that were referenced in the original series:

“It is going to depict when it was good. The mafia was very polished at that time, how they dressed and what they did. Those traditions were followed more loosely in the series. These weren’t guys who wore tracksuits, back then.”

Have a Hard-Boiled Holiday with ‘Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang’

by Leigh Kade
Corey

Great movie.

While there are plenty of film noir movies, and there also are plenty of Christmas movies, there is only one Christmas-noir movie. While the pedigree of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang as a full on holiday movie may be in doubt, there is no denying that the film is chock full of holiday spirit. Take out the murder mystery, gun fights, finger severing, fetish clubs, and testicular electrocution, and you are left with a palm-tree studded winter wonderland filled with Christmas miracles.

Courtesy Warner Bros.

Released in 2005, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is acclaimed film writer Shane Black‘s (Lethal Weapon) directorial debut, and one of the first films Robert Downey, Jr. was featured in after years of legal issues and incarceration  surrounding his battle with drug addiction. Black took a chance on Downey, and that gamble paid off handsomely- Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is razor sharp, with dialogue dipped in acid and delivered with a comedic ripost. When Black is on point, no one writes dialogue better, and the words flow out of his character’s mouths with a machine-gun chatter- no one talks like this in the real world- but wouldn’t it be cool if we could?

Set completely during the Christmas holiday season, Black shoots his Los Angeles backdrop like an ode to neon and Christmas lights. Nearly every scene frames a Christmas tree, twinkling lights, or Michelle Monaghan in a Santa hat. It’s boozy, profane, intoxicating, and thoroughly smitten with the spirit of Christmas, as if Raymond Chandler overdosed on Miracle on 34th Street and had a nervous breakdown afterward.

Downey plays Harry, a down on his luck petty crook who stumbles into an acting job. Flown out to Los Angeles to audition for a part, he is paired up with Perry (Val Kilmer), a private detective who is supposed to show Harry the ropes. Harry runs into Harmony (Michelle Monaghan), a girl he was infatuated with while growing up. The trio get caught up in a murder mystery, and in the process gain something all three had been lacking: a family.

Courtesy Warner Bros.

Monaghan’s Harmony is the real wild card to the plot, though. While she has the look of the classic Femme Fatal of old Hollywood film noir, Harmony is in many ways the beating heart of the movie. She’s certainly the smartest character in the film, and certainly braver than Harry will ever be. Her story arc veers wildly from one lane to the next; right when it feels like she’s about to become a steretype, she charges across a busy street to save someone who stumbled into an ambush.

Courtesy Warner Bros.

You could swap out the Christmas set decorations for any holiday, and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang would still represent inherit yuletide cinematic qualities. It’s a movie about redemption, forgiveness, and togetherness; it’s about people coming together to push back against the darker, more sinister impulses of human nature. It’s about shooting a bad-guy while dangling from the hand of a corpse that is precariously balanced on a freeway overpass… It’s an emotional, exuberant, and joyous exploration of the human spirit.

Sure, you can have your Die Hard. But for me, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is the greatest Christmas movie ever made. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the trailer below:

Netflix’s ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ Trailer Dropping Tomorrow?

by Mary Anne Butler

The last we heard, plans for Netflix’s Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance were moving along at a nice Strider’s pace.

Back during NYCC, Lisa Henson offered some updates on the series, and a teaser trailer was released, focusing on some familiar creatures from the world of the original The Dark Crystal film.

Just today though, the Next on Netflix (NX) Twitter account shared an interesting factoid that could possibly mean some news about Age of Resistance is coming tomorrow-

Indeed, tomorrow is the 36th anniversary of The Dark Crystal, and it would be the PERFECT time to share a full-length trailer (and maybe release date?) for the upcoming Netflix series. In this prequel to the fantasy classic, three young Gelflings inspire a rebellion against the cruel emperor when they discover a horrifying secret.

There are hopes that if this new partnership with the streaming service/studio goes well, other possible Henson properties could find a home at Netflix, as well as some new creations as well.

We’ll of course let you know if/when we hear anything new about The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Locke & Key: Netflix Welcomes Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones to the Locke Family

by Ray Flook

The holidays are meant to be for family, so it seems appropriate for Netflix to introduce us to two more members of their Locke family for the streaming service’s 10-episode series adaptation of writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez‘s comic book series Locke & Key. Connor Jessup (American Crime) and Utopia‘s Emilia Jones are set to take on the roles of Tyler and Kinsey Locke, respectively; joining their on-screen brother Bode Locke, played by Jackson Robert Scott (It).

Credit (left): ABC/(right): Momentum Pictures

Hill and Cuse are joined on the creative team by Aron Eli Coleite and Meredith Averill. The first new episode will be written by Hill and Coleite, and Cuse and Averill will serve as showrunners. Netflix is not moving forward with the existing pilot, which was unexpectedly passed on by Hulu in March 2018, and redevloped scripts and re-cast most of the major roles save Scott’s Bode Locke.

Netflix’s adaptation of the horror/fantasy comic book series focuses on the Locke siblings – Kinsey, Tyler and Bode – who move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts after the gruesome murder of their father – only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Standing in their way is a devious demon who also wants the keys – and will stop at nothing to attain them.

It‘s Andy Muschietti directed Hulu’s pilot, but work on It: Chapter Two will keep him from directing the Netflix version. Muschietti and Cuse will serve as executive producers, along with Barbara Muschietti, Cuse, Hill, Averill and Coleite. Genre Arts’ Lindsey Springer, IDW Entertainment’s Ted Adams, and David Alpert and Rick Jacobs via Circle of Confusion will also executive produce.

Following their father’s gruesome murder in a violent home invasion, the Locke children return to his childhood home of Keyhouse in secluded Lovecraft, Massachusetts. Their mother, Nina is too trapped in her grief—and a wine bottle—to notice that all in Keyhouse is not what it seems: too many locked doors, too many unanswered questions. Older kids Tyler and Kinsey aren’t much better.

But not youngest son Bode, who quickly finds a new friend living in an empty well and a new toy, a key, that offers hours of spirited entertainment. But again, all at Keyhouse is not what it seems, and not all doors are meant to be opened. Soon, horrors old and new, real and imagined, will come ravening after the Lockes and the secrets their family holds.

‘The Predator’ Holiday Stop-Motion Special is Here

by Mary Anne Butler

Looking for a new, non-traditional holiday special to watch this year? Why not The Predator stop-motion?

Taking its cues from the classics of the season like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Jack Frost, this [very] short special imagines what would happen if the most fearsome hunter in the galaxy ended up in the North Pole.

The results are blood and tinsel on the snow, but also pretty hilarious in context.

The Predator | Holiday Special | 20th Century FOX

The special aired on Comedy Central earlier this week, but now is fully online thanks to FOX for your viewing enjoyment:

Also, why not nab the 4K of Shane Black‘s The Predator for the sci-fi fan in your life as a stocking stuffer? Highly suggested.

Narcos: Mexico: Diego Luna, Scoot McNairy Return for Season 2

by Ray Flook
Corey

This season was good.

Netflix‘s Narcos: Mexico has locked in two important names for the Narcos companion series, with Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Scoot McNairy (True Detective) set to return for the show’s second season. Luna returns as Félix Gallardo, the leader of the Guadalajara Cartel and founder of the modern Mexican drug trade. McNairy’s DEA Agent Walt Breslin is an interesting situation: his voice is returning since he served as the first season narrator; but except for the first-season finale, McNairy hasn’t been seen so this will clearly up his on-screen percentages dramatically.

Credit (left): Netflix / (right): AMC

McNairy’s Breslin will lead a task force to track down and bring to justice those responsible for the death of a certain DEA agent from last season who also happens to look like the guy from Ant-Man on the orders of Luna’s Gallardo when the series resumes. With production currently underway in Mexico City, Mexico, the second season of Narcos: Mexico will be produced by Gaumont Television for Netflix. Eric Newman returns as showrunner, and will executive produce alongside José Padilha, Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard, and Andrés Baiz.

Here’s a look at Netflix’s official announcement teaser for Narcos: Mexico season 2:

divider-1.jpg

Narcos: Mexico explores the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers. Witness the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo (Luna) takes the helm, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire.

When DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Peña) moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he ever could have imagined. As Kiki garners intelligence on Félix and becomes more entangled in his mission, a tragic chain of events unfold, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come.
