Atlanta Loves Killer Mike So Much They Gave Into Puns and Named a Tunnel-Boring Machine 'Driller Mike'

by Julia Edelman
2015 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival - Weekend 1 - Day 2

If you thought the greatest gift of life is friendship or love, you're wrong. It's actually having a tunnel-boring machine named in your honor. According to Pitchfork, earlier this year, Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management asked the city's residents to pick a name for the new $11.6 million tunnel-boring machine the city was constructing so that they could turn a local quarry into an emergency drinking-water reservoir. The competition was stiff, and narrowed down to three finalists: “Driller Mike,” “Peach Beast,” and “Scarlett.” But today was a glorious day, and it was announced that “Driller Mike" won the contest. Of the honor, Killer Mike said:

“It was the funniest thing in the world to me. I didn't take it seriously, because I'm a rapper. Cities don't associate themselves with rappers. But I'm a business owner, a dad, an active member of politics in Atlanta, so I was honestly honored that people in Atlanta saw fit to name something after me.”

Paris Is Burning (1990)

by Born Unicorn

parisisburning_bornunicorn (1)

parisisburning_bornunicorn (2)

parisisburning_bornunicorn (3)One of the most emotional scenes of the film is when Pepper LaBeija, mother of the House of LaBeija, tells how his parents found out he dressed as a girl. His mother found a fur coat in his closet and realised it was his from the perfume on it, Jungle Gardenia.

tuvache_junglegardeniaOriginally launched by Tuvaché in the 1930, it became popular in the 1950s. Barbara Herman’s description of it is fascinating: “With tropical wet gardenia and bubble-gum sweet tuberose bursting from its center, flanked by fresh green top notes and an erotic base of balsams and musk, Jungle Gardenia goes straight to the perfume brain’s pleasure center.”

Stoner-Tech Metal Band Trying Really Hard to Write Song in 4/20 Time

by The Hard Times Staff

Denver, Colo. — Self-described “stoner-tech” metal band Great Barrier Reef revealed today their plans to write a song in a 4/20 time signature, which would be the first of its kind.

“We took a much-needed smoke break at practice when [bassist] Steve [Fernil] goes, ‘What if we wrote a concept album with 420 super-short tracks?’” said guitarist Ricky Hensley. “But, then, I’m like, ‘What if we wrote a song in 4/20 time?’ We knew this was huge, so we immediately took one more massive rip and got to work.”

The rest of the band took the task in stride. “That’s what we’re about: technical music showcasing our love of dank-ass weed,” said drummer Chris Morsat. “Like, we have this new song where the guitars alternate between 17/8 and 22/8 while the drummer plays a straight 6/8. And the lyrics are about this amazing mind journey I went on with my dad a few years ago.”

Morsat added, “The song’s called ‘Bong for My Father,’ if people want to hear it.”

Some music experts remain skeptical of Great Barrier Reef’s lofty goal. “It’s impossible,” said Dr. Marcia Bennett, musicologist from the Berklee College of Music. “The denominator indicates what notes you count… and there is no such thing as a twentieth note. I don’t know why they even brought it up.”

Related:

The band, to their credit, claimed they are well aware of this fact. “Listen, I get it,” said Hensley. “Sometimes even I doubt it can be done. But that’s only when societal norms trap my thoughts. Once we smoke this practice space out, the concept becomes a reality, and we know we can stretch the limits of time signatures, man.”

Hensley later credited the band’s enduring strength to the “seriously crisp pulls we get from the Volcano,” a vaporizer known for it’s “prime roastability.”

Despite some initial setbacks, the group is optimistic they can play the song live in the next few months. “It’ll happen as soon as possible, but it’s taking a long time to write,” said Fernil. “But we got some plans to speed things up — Rick scored a bunch of coke for next practice. That should help.”

The Britney Spears Story is Getting the Lifetime Original Movie Treatment

by Jordan Crucchiola
allie

OH LORD.

US-ENTERTAINMENT-PREMIERE-HAIL, CAESAR!

Lifetime is taking on a Herculean task. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network has optioned the life of Britney Spears for a biopic called Britney Jean, and it is set to star young actress Natasha Bassett, who most recently appeared as Gloria DeLamour in Hail, Caesar! With Britney’s new album Glory on the way and a return to live TV with her upcoming Video Music Awards performance this weekend, Lifetime is right on schedule to cash in on all the Brit buzz with its announcement. The movie will be two hours long and track the "'tumultuous true story’ of her rise to fame, fall from grace and triumphant resurrection." The icon’s life story will be recapped (re: dramatized) starting all the way back in the humble days in Kentwood, Louisiana all the way up to her present return to the Billboard charts and mainstream cultural consciousness. And, of course, it will explore the breakups of her relationships with Justin Timberlake, Jason Alexander and Kevin Federline. Honestly, two hours doesn’t seem like nearly enough time, considering you could probably make a miniseries just about the conservatorship years, which are still ongoing. So while Lifetime churns out Britney Jean, hopefully Ryan Murphy is getting to work on American Crime Story: Sam Lufti v. The Family Spears.

Amy Winehouse Foundation Opens Home for Women in Recovery

by Nate Jones
T in the Park - Scotland

Five years after Amy Winehouse's death, the foundation set up by the singer's family will open a center to house women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, The Guardian reports. Amy's Place, in East London, was designed in partnership with Centra, a British affordable-housing nonprofit, and will have space for up to 16 women, with a three-month program of "yoga, relapse prevention groups, and potential skills and employability based workshops." It's only the second female-only recovery center in the British capital, which the Amy Winehouse Foundation's Dominic Ruffy tells The Guardian was an important factor for all the women the foundation consulted: "It was evident there was a clear need and the women would feel more secure in an environment [where] they knew they weren’t going to be troubled by aspects from their past."
