sonos-playbar

Are you an audiophile who plays music from multiple sources, yet also enjoys great sound from your TV? The Sonos Playbar may be an option for you. It looks stylish, and it connects to your TV via an optical cable and can be controlled by your TV remote. You can use the Playbar with any device that is connected to your TV. Sonos has made their products simple to set-up, so most anyone can use them. When you are not watching a movie or playing a game, you can listen to your favorite tunes from iTunes, Pandora, Sirius internet radio, built-in free radio stations, and many other sources over WiFi. All of this can be controlled via your Android or iOS device with the free Sonos Controller apps. Lastly, the Sonos Playbar will pair up with other Sonos wireless speakers. The Sonos Playbar is available online for $699, which may be steep, but it already has several good reviews on Amazon, so we will see in time if it’s worth the price.

BUILD Modular Shelving

by Ben Dahl

According to something we read recently, the most requested service from the popular gofer/assistant/helper site Task Rabbit is the assembly of IKEA furniture. This is relevant because IKEA furniture sucks. You save on cost, but assembly sucks, moving it is the same as breaking it and the instructions are written in fourth-grade cartoon. Apparently it’s also made with formaldehyde?! BUILD Modular Shelving skews much more to the modern because of it’s honeycomb-esque shape, but that’s not a bad thing. Each ...

This Personal Alarm Weaponizes Your House Key

A self-defense course will teach you how to use your keys as a weapon, but in practice, when you're under attack and panicking, protecting yourself with a keyring isn't as easy as it sounds. So the Hit, from Unikia, combines a loud audible panic alarm with a pop-up holder that turns a key into a switchblade that's easier to wield as a weapon.

Google Drive reportedly encrypting files, keeping prying eyes off of your cloud

by Timothy J. Seppala

CNET has learned that Google may be implementing measures to keep the government (or anyone else) out of your Google Drive-stored data. Should this be true, folks concerned about their privacy -- everyone, we would hope -- might rest easier in a post-PRISM world. According to one of CNET's anonymous sources, this isn't some flight of fancy, either: A small percentage of Drive files are already protected. Of course, even such digital protection is not guaranteed to keep your files private, but it would force those who would like a peek to obtain your login credentials first. Not that Uncle Sam would ever do such a thing without legal permission, right?

Samsung announces 3,000MB/s enterprise SSD, shames competition

by Timothy J. Seppala

DNP Samsung's blazing fast enterprise SSD announced,

The ink has barely dried on Samsung's last SSD announcement and the South Korean manufacturer has already made it obsolete by orders of magnitude. This 2.5-inch enterprise-class SSD isn't for us regular Joes, but if you thought the company's EVO 840's 540MB/s was zippy, hold on to your desk chair. The newly announced NVMe SSD XS1715 reads data at a mind-numbing 3,000MB/s. Hitting these absurd numbers isn't without a caveat, though, as this SSD won't run on a SATA-6 port -- it requires a PCIe hook-up. When these speed demons do arrive, they'll be available in 400GB, 800GB and 1.6TB sizes. Oh, and we want one. For business.

Injectable 'smart sponge' controls diabetes, presents new targeted drug delivery method

by Mariella Moon

DNP Targeted drug delivery via sponge

Diabetics might appreciate high-tech glucose sensors when they're available, but the option for other advanced treatments is certainly intriguing. Take, for example, this new method developed by North Carolina State University researchers that uses injectable sponge to control blood sugar levels. No, it's not the same sponge you use to clean at home -- the material is made out of a substance taken from crab and shrimp shells called chitosan. This spongy material forms a matrix that's approximately 250 micrometers in diameter, where a rise in blood sugar causes a reaction in the pores that leads to the drug's release.

Fighting diabetes is but one of the things this miraculous sponge can be used for; developed further, it could even "intelligently" release anticancer drugs whenever the chitosan reacts to tumors or cancer cells in close proximity. Seems like medical technology is getting smarter with each passing day.

Community Board Tells Resident Mermaid She Can’t Flap Her Fins Just Anywhere

by Mary Beth Quirk
(FOX 13)

(FOX 13)

She wants to be where the people are, she wants to see… wants to see them walking around her housing complex’s pool while she flaps in a pool in her mermaid costume. But one woman’s dreams of swimming freely is being dashed by her local community board, which calls her custom-made silicon mermaid suit a breach of the “no fin” policy.

“It makes me feel amazing makes children smile makes adults smile, everybody happy, you don’t expect to see a mermaid at the pool,”  the woman tells Fox 13 in Tampa Bay.

And while at least one of her neighbors is a fan of her swim routine (“I’m a 48-year-old man and I get a big smile on my face seeing her swim,” said a neighbor), her community board told her she can’t wear the outfit in the pools at her housing complex.

“We love what’s she trying to do, be kind to children and do something good for the community. We love her intentions — it’s simply that it violates rules,” said board chair.

Them’s the rules, but the woman says her flapping won’t do any harm.

“This can’t come flinging off in a pool like swim fin, and it’s not made of a hard plastic,” she explained.

Although her dreams of swimming among the two-legged won’t be coming true right now, she’s still holding on to the hope that she’ll one day be able to swim underwater at the Florida Aquarium.

Sewage Workers’ Request: Please Stop Flushing Disposable Wipes, You’re Clogging The Pipes

by Mary Beth Quirk

Just because something is marketed as disposable or flushable, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a good thing for city sewer systems. In fact, many of workers are now begging us as a nation to stop flushing disinfecting wipes or those “use these when toilet paper just isn’t enough” wipes, because they end up clogging pipes down the line.

Those who operate city sewer systems say that although there’s that convenience factor of flushing wipes when you’re done, once the cloth-like material doesn’t break down like traditional toilet paper. After they leave your toilet the wipes continue on their merry way into the sewer system, where it can seriously gum up the works and cost cities big bucks to repair, reports USA Today.

It’s gotten worse lately as the market has become flooded with bathroom wipes, either as cleaning products or personal hygiene items for that oh-so-fresh feeling toilet paper can’t always provide.

“It’s getting to be more and more of a problem,” said the superintendent for the city of Sauk Centre, Minn. That city had to hire someone to vacuum out a lift station, resulting in a truckload of cloth material.

This kind of thing is going on everywhere, says Cynthia Finley, director of regulatory affairs for the National Association of Clean Water Agencies.

“Consumers are being told by the packaging that these things are flushable,” Finley says.

So what’s a savvy consumer to do? You don’t have to stop buying the wipes — just make sure you toss them out in the garbage instead of sending them shooting off into cloggy pipe land.

Override font size, orientation or input method of Android apps

by Martin Brinkmann

App Override is a free application for Android that you can make use of to customize specific apps on the system. What is meant by that is that you can override default settings of the system that are valid for all applications, like the input method, font size or screen orientation, so that specified apps use different defaults.

There are quite a few scenarios where this may come in handy. An app may use a small font size that makes text barely readable. You may have disabled the changing of the orientation of the phone's or tablet's screen by default, but want one app to make use of it. You may want to set the sound of a specific application to mute but keep sound enabled on the system otherwise.

The application provides the following customization options:

  • Font Size: Increase or decrease the font size of individual applications.
  • Input method (root): Change the input method of select apps.
  • Minimum and maximum cpu speed (root)
  • Orientation: the screen orientation of select apps.
  • Screen timeout: When the screen is turned off.
  • Sound mode: changing the sound output of an application.
  • Wi-Fi: Enable or disable wireless Internet for an app.

android customize appsoverride apps

What is interesting is that you can use many of the features without root, which means that it will work on regular Android versions as well.

The application displays a disclaimer and recent update information on start. You may want to click on what to control on top first to select the customizations that you want to make use of. Only orientation and screen timeout are selected by default. You can check any option with a tap on the box so that it becomes available.

All installed apps are listed on the main screen, with the defaults of the system displayed on top. You can tap on any app here to customize it. The program displays if the default value is used, or if it has been customized already. A tap on a customization option displays either a slider that you can use, for instance when you select font size or screen timeout, or a pulldown menu.

All customizations are highlighted underneath the application on the frontpage so that you always know which you have customized and which is running on defaults.

You do need to switch the off button to on once you are done customizing applications. If you do not, you won't notice any change whatsoever as the app is not running in the background to make the modifications.

Verdict

Override Apps comes in handy in numerous situations, from increasing or decreasing the font size of applications to disabling Wi-Fi access for specific applications or changing the sound mode for specific apps. It needs to be noted that the author considers the application to be still in beta. While I did not notice any issues while running it on my Galaxy Note II, your experience may be different. Worms with Heads Cut Off grow New Head and Remember the Past

by Alan Parekh

Worms with Heads Cut Off grow New Head and Remember the Past

There are lots of crazy things in nature that are unbelievable. You have probably read about starfish being able to regenerate lost arms or how frogs can freeze solid for months with no heart beat and thaw out and be good as new in the summer. Many species of worms also have the ability to regrow chopped off sections of their body including internal organs, see the video below for some information on that. It turns out that when the brain regrows it also retains the memories of the brain that was chopped off. This was tested by training flatworms to travel across a rough surface to access food prior to chopping their heads off, when the new head grew back the work remembered how to get to it’s food.

In the 50s a scientist also demonstrated that you could teach these worms to travel through a maze just by feeding untrained worms the ground up bodies of worms that were trained in the maze. Just imagine what our world would be like if the human body also operated in the same way?

Logitech's new Z600 Bluetooth speakers cost $150, let you connect up to three devices at once

A simple, virtual stroll through the internet would easily convey that Bluetooth speakers aren't the hot item they once were. Still, who would complain about having a vast amount of options to choose from? The latest set comes by way of Logitech with the Z600, a pair of Bluetooth 2.0 sound blasters capable of being connected to up to three devices simultaneously -- the company says it's as easy as pressing pause on one and play on another to switch between them. The Z600's sleek looks are complemented by three undisclosed drivers in each speaker and touch volume controls; there are also a couple of alternatives to Bluetooth as well, including a 3.5mm audio jack and USB transceiver. Logitech will be putting these on shelves across the US and Europe next month for $149.99, but if you're interested you can pre-order them now from the source below.

    Fraud-proof Credit Card

    by Radhika Seth

For every code there exists a hack and the Credit Card industry is not immune to money frauds either. To stay a step ahead in the game, many companies are opting for IC chip cards instead of the ‘easily-duplicated- magnetic cards’. Hidden Card is a concept that where the CPU, operation system, memory area, and security algorithm are built into the IC chip card, so it can be used for a variety of purposes.

The IC chip is placed on the left side of the card front and serves as a type of connecting code. Hidden Card protects your information embedded in the IC chip and even prevents secondary damage.
