Online dating, for all its faults and critiques, has become one of the most popular ways Americans find love.
One awesome side effect of this is that we now have access to a realm of data that has never been available before — how people talk, interact, and communicate prior to entering a relationship.
And one thing that should be worrisome for straight men is the size of their disadvantage in the market.
Josh Fischer is the Director of Product Insights at SNAP Interactive (STVI: OTC BB), the company that owns the dating website Are You Interested.
AYI.com has 20 million members, and Josh sent over some fascinating charts that look at the probability women and men respond to messages given the ages of a sender.
Basically, everyone is more likely to respond to a message from someone younger than they are from someone older.
Here's the probability a woman responds to a message from a man on AYI.com. The vertical access is the probability of response, and the horizontal axis shows the age difference. The younger the man is, relative to the woman, the better shot he has.
And here's the probability a man responding to a message from a woman. Note that the response rates across all age differences are way higher.
Here are those two charts merged:
So the first thing: Comparing men and women responding to people their own age, Women respond to men 4% of the time while men respond to women around 18% of the time.
What does this mean? Generally speaking, an average straight man will have to send 25 messages to women his own age procure one response, while the average straight woman will have to send 5 messages.
That's fascinating, and also could be an explanation — men sending a lot more messages than women — for the disparity.
But also let's look at what other conclusions we can draw.

He practiced in various places in the American West, earning little as his patients were wary of the dentist's tuberculosis. Holiday opened a saloon in Las Vegas in 1879. Now a dentist chair found in Las Vegas and inscribed with the name John Holliday is up for auction.

A company called Eone has come up with one of the most innovative wristwatches you’ll ever see. Unlike other timepieces that display or announce the time, The Bradley allows you to determine the time through touch. It’s a watch that can be used discreetly, but more importantly it’s a watch that blind people can use.
The Bradley has a Swiss quartz movement, but instead of a digital display or hands,it has two ball bearings. The one on its face indicates minutes, while the one embedded on the side indicates the hour. The ball bearings are connected to the movement via magnets. The hour and minute markers are fairly large and textured. In addition, the marker for the 12th hour has a distinct shape.

So why is it called The Bradley? The watch was named after Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder, a former bomb diffuser. Bradley lost his eyesight in 2011 when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan. But with the support of his loved ones, Bradley faced his new life head on. A year after he went blind, he won two gold medals and one silver medal for swimming at the 2012 Paralympics.
Pledge at least $128 (USD) on Kickstarter to receive a Bradley timepiece as a reward.

Tonight, the best players in Major League Baseball will face off against one another in the league’s annual All-Star Game. While there will likely be plenty of fastballs and homeruns on display during the Midsummer Classic, we here at VH1 Celebrity had an idea that might help improve the chances that a non-sports fan would tune-in to the game. What if the commissioner introduced a new idea wherein celebrities would throw out the first pitch of every inning, not just a single one before the game started? (We know, we know, it’s a genius idea.)
While that idea (probably?) won’t be implemented this year, here’s hoping that Bud Selig sees this post and makes this change in time for next year’s affair.
