Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare Release Date Announced

by Shane McGlaun

PopCap Games is the developer behind the very popular mobile game franchise Plants vs. Zombies. During E3 this year PopCap and EA announced that a new game would be coming in the franchise aimed at console gamers called Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare.

pvzgw 620x349magnify

This game is very different from the others in the PvZ franchise. Garden Warfare is a third-person shooter supporting multiplayer action. The game is based on the Frostbite 3 game engine and will hit the Xbox 360 and Xbox One game consoles on February 18 in North America.

The game will land in Europe on February 20. A PC version of the game will be coming later. The game has three modes and over ten maps for gamers to play. Two of the modes support 12 vs. 12 player versus battles. The other mode is a four-play co-op mode. The game will cost $39.99(USD) on the Xbox One and $29.99 on the Xbox 360 (which is kind of stupid that they’re charging more for the Xbox One version).

Microsoft Now Shipping Kinect For Windows Preview Kits To “Thousands” Of Developers

by Alex Wilhelm
2013-11-22_11h16_34

Today Microsoft announced that it is shipping developer preview kits of its new Kinect for Windows sensor and software. That means the company is getting the new Kinect (a pre-release version) and the code to run it into the hands of developers on the same day that the Xbox One launched.

The Xbox One brings the living room variant of the new Kinect to average folk en masse.

According to Microsoft, “thousands” of developers signed up for the program. That's nontrivial given that it cost $399 to take part, as The Next Web's Emil Protalinski points out. Developers who receive the pre-release Kinect will also be given the final Kinect for Windows device when it is finished next year.

Kinect for Windows is a technology I've been a fan of since I heard of it. Adding voice and motion control to your computer that can likely already handle touch, and mouse and keyboard input is compelling. Other companies like Leap Motion are working on similar, if technologically dissimilar efforts.

However, Kinect for Windows, unlike its Xbox-based cousin, remains a developer toy better suited for one-off experimentation than daily use. Buy a Kinect for Windows sensor and if you can't code, you can't do much more than look at the device.

That said, no platform is born mature, and if we're eventually going to bake elements of Kinect into our laptop screens and desktop monitors, we have to incubate the technology. The software side of the new Kinect contains a new SDK, supporting what the second generation Kinect hardware can bring in, in terms of data. For more on that, head here.

Japan Has Buses That Look Like Spaceships

by Nicole Wakelin

b1_Upload

It looks like the inside of some kind of space shuttle, but it’s actually the Star Fighter bus and you’ll only find it in Japan. It’s part of Willer Travel’s fleet of buses that takes people all around the country, but this one goes on a very specific tour. It takes travelers on a trip from Tokyo’s Shinjuku to Tsukuba Space Center which is like their version of NASA. If someone does this in the US, then I’ll be the first one in line to buy a ticket.

Someone Paid $27,000 For A Single Magic Card [Video]

by Nicole Wakelin

m_Upload

There are collectors, and then there are guys crazy enough to spend $27K on a single Magic card. That’s what someone did recently when they won an eBay auction for a Alpha Black Lotus card. There were only 1100 printed back in 1993 and because this one was in such good condition it was worth big bucks. Time to break out that shoebox of cards in the closet and see if you’re sitting on a fortune.

See a video explanation of the card’s value after the break…

by Andrew Yoon
Now that Xbox One is out, you probably want to speak to your console. By saying "Xbox," Kinect opens up a menu that lets you speak a command at it. As noted in our review, you have to be very specific with your commands, otherwise Xbox might not understand you. Here's an overview of all the things you can say to your Kinect:

Grilling: Bacon-Wrapped Turkey Breast With Cornbread Stuffing

by Joshua Bousel

20131112-273476-bacon-wrapped-turkey-breast.jpg

[ Photographs: Joshua Bousel ]

The first Thanksgiving my wife (then girlfriend) spent with my family, her mother asked if she could send us a holiday ham as a gift. My wife was left explaining that it might not be most appropriate present for a Jewish family, thus beginning the tradition of a lovely in-law-provided floral centerpiece on our Thanksgiving table.

Oh, how I wished things went differently, though.

I have an insatiable appetite for ham, and knowing that those flowers could have just as easily been a beautiful, sweet city ham gnaws at me each successive holiday. We've long since given up keeping kosher and I've been waiting for the right time to introduce the idea of a ham instead of a bird. Well, it turns out that 2013 is finally the year it's going to happen. The only problem? The murmur of an absentee turkey didn't elate my dad and stepmom to quite the same degree, so I'm left finding a scaled-down version of turkey to satisfy everyone at the table.

Given the circumstances, a bacon-wrapped turkey may seem a little counterintuitive, but this recipe blew away the cranberry- and apple-stuffed turkey breast I was also developing, and it's my firm belief that serious eaters deserve only the best.

Sweet Sausage Stuffing

20131112-273476-bacon-wrapped-turkey-breast-step-2.jpg

The recipe was devised as a solution to many problems. It's not only turkey we're taking away this year, but stuffing, too (which we're trading in for mac and cheese). But I love the sweet cornbread and sausage stuffing that has become our family tradition, so I saw this turkey breast as a way to sneak that back into the meal, as well.

I start out by browning sausage and then cooking onion, celery, and apple in its rendered fat. Sage and thyme add an herbal touch, and it all gets mixed in with crumbled cornbread and some chicken stock for additional moisture.

Fancy Weave

20131112-273476-bacon-wrapped-turkey-breast-step-4.jpg

My prior attempts at turkey rolls have been alright, but suffered from some dryness around the edges of the breast. To retain that much-needed moisture, I busted out the bacon weave, which obviously also delivers the welcome addition of salty-smoky flavor.

Laying six strips of bacon out side by side, I interlaced six more running perpendicular to the first strips. The turkey breast, brined for even more moisture, is butterflied and pounded out, laid over the bacon weave, spread with stuffing, and rolled into a cylinder. I wrapped the roll tightly in plastic wrap and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours so it would firm up and not require any tying.

Roll n' Roast

20131112-273476-bacon-wrapped-turkey-breast-step-5.jpg

I tried two methods of cooking the roll-up: one on the smoker and the other over indirect heat on the grill. The bacon added enough smokiness to render the smoker extranneous, so I went with the grill, roasting the breast until it hit 150°F. The bacon was mostly well-browned by then, but did benefit from a quick stint over direct heat at the end to give it a little more crispness and color.

This turkey breast is more than just the sum of its parts. The meat is juicy throughout, but most of the flavor is a mix between the sweet-and-savory cornbread stuffing and smoky bacon. It's a natural pairing, and one that managed to evoke Thanksgiving traditions of the past while presenting them a new, enticing way.

This Dramatic Reenactment Of A YouTube Comment War Is Hilarious

by Caroline Moss

If you ever want to lose faith in humanity, head on over to the comment section on YouTube.

Sketch comedy troupe Dead Parrot hired two actors to reenact a memorable YouTube comment war between two One Direction fans over whether or not One Direction member Harry Styles was gay, or if you could love both One Direction and Justin Bieber at the same time. We first saw this video on Gawker.

You don't have to know anything about either musical act to find the video absolutely amazing. (Warning: there's a four-letter word about halfway through.)

Just Try Not To Cringe At The Anti-Google Merchandise In Microsoft’s Online Store

by Mary Beth Quirk

At least the models look happy?

At least the models look happy?

On the one hand, these “Scroogled” items up for sale on Microsoft’s official online store provoke a response of ugh, groan. On the other hand, it’s all, cringe, no, awkward. Either way you go, Microsoft’s attempt to poke fun at its competitor just comes off as a little bit… sad.

It’s a real online store and a real line of shirts, hats and even a mug with phrases like a Chrome logo in a trench coat, “Keep Calm While We Still Your Data,” “We’re Watching You” and Microsoft’s favorite dig, the Scroogled logo. Because of course, this is the Scroogled section of the store, points out Wired.com in its shared disbelief.

While we can’t imagine anyone willingly donning a T-shirt with Chrome as a scary spider, apparently the mug is sold out.

And as for Google watching people, yes, its all-seeing eye does mine the treasure trove of your Internet searches to market products. But Microsoft’s Kinect feature of the XBox One also watches people — a little too closely for some, points out FastCoDesign. It watches you right in the junk.

Please, Microsoft. Give up on making “Scroogled” a thing. Or at least refrain from trying to sell merchandise with that on it and work on developing your own brand personality. Slinging insults via cringeworthy T-shirts isn’t going to get you too far in the image battle.

Know what will? Devoting your resources to developing great products consumers will benefit from. Just a thought.
