10 Clever Halloween Costumes that Incorporate Amputations and Wheelchairs
Josh Sundquist said, “When life hands you lemons, make awesome Halloween costumes.” That’s just what these folks did, using a physical disability to take cosplay and Halloween costumes to a new level.
1. and 2. The Black Knight
Redditor whaaaaaaaaales posted a picture of a friend’s Halloween costume from last year. He’s a wounded veteran who prefers to remain anonymous, which is very possible with a full helmet. He is the Black Knight from the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. In case you aren’t familiar with the character, you must see the movie clip. The unnamed veteran has plans to improve the costume for this year.
Next year: red pipe cleaners over the prosthetic, arranged as spurts of blood. May also feature a small squeeze bottle for my arm, with surgical tubing leading from the bottle to the arm stump so it can squirt food coloring. I only wish the Taliban could see how much fun I'm having.
Daniel is a quadruple amputee, which made for the best Black Knight cosplay ever. This picture was taken at the Edmonton Expo. To comment on the discussion about it, he took the awesome reddit handle butascratch.
3. Tyrion Lannister
Photograph by Wil Wheaton.
Mica Bethea played music until a 2005 auto accident left him quadriplegic. He is a writer and arranger for the Mica Bethea Big Band. He cosplays in his spare time, and wowed the internet with his excellent Tyrion Lannister on the Iron Throne cosplay at Megacon.
4. Superman
Comedian Lloyd Ravn makes awesome costumes for his sons, including the clever flying Superman costume. He stuffed a Superman costume with cotton batting, and then suspended the legs from the chair handles with filament.
5. Heavy Equipment Operator
Photograph by Cassie McLelland.
Caleb McLelland is a nine-year-old with spina bifida. His mother, Cassie McLelland, has fashioned a clever costume for his wheelchair every year for trick-or-treat, and she has a blog about wheelchair costumes for children that features both her designs and those submitted by others. The picture above is Caleb’s first Halloween costume from when he was three years old. See a selection of Caleb’s costumes from over the years.
6. Leg Lamp
You can buy a Leg Lamp Halloween costume referencing a prop from the movie A Christmas Story. But redditor mjr214 has a friend who has only one leg, which made her homemade costume so much more authentic -and awesome! You can see the comparison in this photo.
7. Shark Attack
Redditor notsohipster has a young cousin who has no legs. He and his little sister trick-or-treated in these clever costumes portraying a shark and her surfboarding victim.
8. Dr. Arliss Loveless
This cosplayer was spotted at Florida Supercon 2014. He is playing Dr. Arliss Loveless from the movie Wild Wild West, in his steampunk wheelchair.
9. Cherry Darling
Photograph by Flickr user Cameron Yee.
The character Cherry Darling from the movie Planet Terror startled folks when they saw that one of her legs was a machine gun. Then it inspired some women to recreate the scene. Now, if you are an amputee like Lacey Henderson, who gained note as a college cheerleader a few years ago, you can make hay by cosplaying the character at fan events. Henderson inspired an annual competition for the best machine-gun-leg costume, which later expanded to include any amputee costume.
10. Flamingo
Josh Sundquist is a rapper, math nerd, and Paralympic champion. He lost his left leg due to cancer years ago, which gives him the ability to pull off some really clever Halloween costumes. Sundquist’s 2013 costume may take you a minute to figure out. Oh yes, he's a flamingo, but was he honestly up for doing this handstand for everyone who asks? Sure, he's an athlete, but that could get old when you're out trying to have Halloween fun. It'd be easier just to pull out the picture when someone asks what's with the pink bodysuit and that goofy shoe. See more pictures of the flamingo costume. And you might want to check in with Sundquist as the month progresses, because he's bound to have a killer new idea this year!
Cycling Activists Build Bamboo Car Skeletons to Demonstrate Space Taken by Single Occupancy Cars

A few Latvian activists from a branch of the bicycle advocacy group Let’s Bike it recently created a visual reminder of the space taken by cars on a typical road. To accomplish this, the group fabricated bamboo skeletons shaped like actual cars and mounted them on their bikes. The activists then cycled around the streets of Riga for several hours to highlight the absurdity of using a large car to move a single person. The stunt was organized as part of European Mobility Week, an ongoing campaign that explores sustainable urban mobility around Europe. (via Designboom, My Modern Met)
Man Finishes Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 & Zelda: OoT in Less Than 1 Hour
So you’ve finished some of your favorite game more times than you can count. You know all the shortcuts and can even finish them in one sitting. What’s your next challenge? If you’re YouTuber KarlJobst, you play and finish three Nintendo 64 games. At once. In under an hour. What.
Karljobst fired up Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on three different N64 consoles and TVs, then cycled through the three games as cutscenes played on the other two. Of course, he inevitably let Link, Mario or Bond sit idle from time to time so he could focus on one game. He finished GoldenEye 007 in 21:51, Ocarina of Time in 18:10 and Super Mario 64 (a 16-star run) in 15:44. Don’t believe me? Watch and watch and watch:
I guess the opposite of this would be watching Tarn Adams complete Dwarf Fortress.
Stella the Dog Leaps Into Huge Piles of Leaves to Fetch Her Ball
Like most dogs, Stella the yellow lab will chase her favorite tennis ball just about anywhere. So it's no surprise that she excitedly leaps into giant piles of leaves to get it back. She dives right in and swims around until you can see nothing but her tail happily wagging in the leaves.

Jimmy John’s Makes Workers Sign Strict Non-Compete Agreements To Guard Its Sandwich Secrets

(C_Dubyaa)
As part of a proposed class action lawsuit filed against a franchisee by two workers who had claimed that the company forced employees to work off the clock, the amended complaint argues that the noncompete agreement even low-wage sandwich makers and delivery drivers have to sign, reports the Huffington Post. The workers claim the agreement is overly broad and “oppressive” to employees.
Per the agreement, as reported by HuffPo:
Employee covenants and agrees that, during his or her employment with the Employer and for a period of two (2) years after … he or she will not have any direct or indirect interest in or perform services for … any business which derives more than ten percent (10%) of its revenue from selling submarine, hero-type, deli-style, pita and/or wrapped or rolled sandwiches and which is located with three (3) miles of either [the Jimmy John's location in question] or any such other Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop.
Got that? You can’t work within three miles of any Jimmy John’s out of the over 2,000 locations if your new place of employment gets 10% of its business from making sandwiches.
Depending on where you live, that could dramatically limit the places a worker could get a job after leaving Jimmy John’s, the workers’ lawyer says. She argues that the blackout area would cover 6,000 square miles in 44 states and Washington, D.C.
“It is disturbing this document is being used and it is our position that it has broad impact on thousands of employees,” she says.
Thus far Jimmy John’s doesn’t seem to have enforced the clause, and is not commenting on the lawsuit.
So why does Jimmy John’s even have a non-compete clause? What trade secrets could there be worth protecting — a super secret roast beef tenderizer? A special way of layering tomatoes?

Facebook May Be Working With Samsung On A New Smartphone (FB)

It looks like Facebook could still be mulling over a possible Facebook phone — this time without HTC's help.
Facebook is reportedly in talks with Samsung regarding a possible collaboration on a new smartphone, according to The Korean Herald and The Korea Times (via 9to5Google).
According to the reports, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg met with Samsung Electronics vice chairman Lee Jay-yong at Samsung's headquarters in Seoul.
Rumors of some sort of a standalone Facebook phone have existed for years. Facebook's previous attempts at a Facebook-centric phone include the HTC ChaCha, which featured a physical Facebook button for quickly posting to the social network, and the HTC First, which included the Facebook Home operating system, which was really a software "layer" on top of Android.
Both phones failed to take off, leaving the possibility of a Facebook-exclusive phone up in the air.
A partnership between Facebook and Samsung could make a lot of sense, however, and the two companies are actually already working together.
Facebook now owns Oculus, the virtual reality company behind the highly anticipated Rift headset. Oculus and Samsung partnered earlier this year for Samsung's GearVR headset.

Oculus helped provide the tech behind the headset, along with integration with the Oculus ecosystem, and in return, Samsung provided Oculus with the displays for its DK2 development kits, which utilize screens taken from the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
If Samsung and Facebook do work together on a smartphone, you can expect Facebook's focus to be on the software inside the phone and how apps will integrate with Facebook, which Zuckerberg has fixated on in the past.
If you're interested in reading the original reports, head on over to The Korea Herald and The Korea Times.

The Microsoft Engine That Nailed The World Cup Is Predicting Every NFL Game — Here Are Its Picks For Week 7

Microsoft Cortana had its second-straight solid week of NFL predictions, correctly picking 11 of 15 Week 6 games.
It's now 58-33 (64%) on the year.
Week 6 was a good week for favorites across the board. Cortana went 11-4, Vegas favorites went 12-3, and Nate Silver's ELO model went 10-5.
The only game Cortana and Vegas differed on in Week 6 was Steelers-Browns. Cortana had the Steelers winning and Vegas had the Browns as slight favorites. The Browns won 31-10. Vegas favorites are now 59-32 on the season. Silver's ELO is 64-27.
Cortana, the Windows Phone virtual assistant that uses an algorithm from Bing Predicts to predict every game, caught fire and correctly picked 15 of 16 World Cup knockout stage games. After a so-so start to the NFL season, the algorithm is now 24-6 in its last two weeks.
Here are Cortana's Week 7 picks as of Tuesday evening. We'll update them if they change throughout the week (Vegas favorites in parentheses):
- New York Jets vs. New England Patriots — Patriots win, 81% chance (Patriots -9.5)
- Atlanta Falcons vs. Baltimore Ravens — Ravens win, 68.8% chance (Ravens -7)
- Tennessee Titans vs. Washington Redskins — Redskins win, 59.8% chance (Redskins -4.5)

- New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys — Cowboys win, 67.4% chance (Cowboys -5.5)
- San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos — Broncos win, 64.4% chance (Broncos -6.5)
- Houston Texans vs. Pittsburgh Steelers — Steelers win, 64.4% chance (Steelers -3.5)
Cortana and Vegas don't disagree on anything this week.
