Saturday Link Love: Delta, School Lunches, and Rahm Emanuel’s Math

by Libby Anne
SpinnyNuNu

From the "Cool Black Girl" link:

Maybe my friend is right, and some of them could be brought to our side if people like me invested energy in making them feel less judged and more welcome. But since I don’t, they stay on their side.

I’m sure it’s my loss.

I'm reminded of this quote someone shared last week:

Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but because out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed.

That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore.

Autocorrect?

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

I vote "were" over "was" because if you change the sentence to a baseball sentence, "Joe Panik's 12 hits in the 3-game series versus the Rockies were a franchise record," it makes sense.

I don't think you can put in unspoken words without adding them parenthetically.

"Rookie Kareem Hunt, after fumbling on his first NFL carry, scored three times and set an NFL mark: Hunt’s 239 yards in his pro debut were a record since the 1970 merger."
There are several copyeditors who read TYWKIWDBI.   I wonder if the above passage resulted from an autocorrect in a word-processing program or whether some style manuals would insist on this usage of "were."

If I were writing the sentence, my mind would place an unspoken (total of) before the 239 and change the verb to "was a record..."

Disturbing photo tests boundaries of free speech, hate crime

SpinnyNuNu

>>>there is a serious free speech issue that may support what they’re doing,” said Mark Kende, a constitutional law professor at Drake University.

I take exception to the word support in this context. I would substitute allow because to me, the connotation of support is that there's an a level of agreement with the behavior.

Yes, these idiots are allowed to behave like this under the constitution. That doesn't mean anyone needs to support or condone the disgusting behavior.

Is this controversial photo considered free speech or a hate crime? The answer may surprise you.

Showdown unfolds over fence near Rocklin High School

SpinnyNuNu

Similar thing happened at my son's HS. They took over part of the student parking for construction and announced that the kids could park in a partially paved lot around the corner that abuts the track/football field. Then they proceeded to lock the gate between the lot and access to school property.

I'm kids we're expected to walk around the block crossing three busy school driveways in order to get on campus.

Super well thought out plan you've got there.

Neighbors in a Rocklin community are frustrated after the Rocklin Unified School District put up a fence blocking access to the high school.

Evening Gown | c.1850 — During the 1850s in France, there...

SpinnyNuNu

>>>The silk’s swing design would have been considered provocative for the time since it had long been associated with seduction

My art history teacher said this was because the man in front and below would have the opportunity to see up the skirt of the lady on the swing.

Evening Gown | c.1850 —
During the 1850s in France, there was renewed interest in eighteenth-century literature, art, and architecture and nostalgia for the lost world of Louis XV and his mistress Madame de Pompadour, who symbolized gracious living for the aristocracy and newly rich bourgeoisie. The resurgence of interest in rococo artists included reissues in England and France of engravings after the ornamental designs and paintings of Jean-Antoine Watteau (French, 1684-1721). For the fabric of this ball gown, two images by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas after Watteau have been combined. It is likely that the fabric was originally meant to have been used for furnishings, probably for a bedroom or boudoir (dressing room or private sitting room). The silk’s swing design would have been considered provocative for the time since it had long been associated with seduction. The gown was possibly worn originally by a member of the demimonde such as an actress-or by a naive young woman.
