SpinnyNuNuI vote "were" over "was" because if you change the sentence to a baseball sentence, "Joe Panik's 12 hits in the 3-game series versus the Rockies were a franchise record," it makes sense.
I don't think you can put in unspoken words without adding them parenthetically.

I wonder if the above passage resulted from an autocorrect in a word-processing program or whether some style manuals would insist on this usage of "were."

Showdown unfolds over fence near Rocklin High School

They took over part of the student parking for construction and announced that the kids could park in a partially paved lot around the corner that abuts the track/football field. Then they proceeded to lock the gate between the lot and access to school property.
I'm kids we're expected to walk around the block crossing three busy school driveways in order to get on campus.
