1 Månad Carnivore Diet Experiment

by Martina

Carnivore diet

Intressanta effekter

Nu till lite intressanta effekter som jag upplevde nämligen;

  1. Ingen pollenallergi
  2. Ingen katt-allergi
  3. Förbättrat luktsinne
  4. Förändrade smakpreferenser
  5. Fettminskning/viktminskning

May 7, 2018: Back on the home front!

by Joseph Mallozzi

“You’re toothbrush passed away,”Akemi informed me today upon my return home from Montreal.

“What happened?”I asked, in several different ways at several different times that afternoon.  Her responses were always evasive:

“You’re going to get a new one.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“Just passed away.”

And, finally: “Commit suicide.”

I suspect I’ll never learn the truth surrounding Mr. Bristles fate.

Anyways, I’m back in Toronto, ready to reclaim my spot on the bed from Suji and Lulu who, by all accounts, are enjoying the newfound real estate, having laid claim to half the mattress in unabashedly sprawly fashion.  I may be in for quite the battle tonight.

Also, back at it!  I have a move to plan, people to meet, a script and overview to deliver, and a lot of comic books to catch up on.

Make Bacon Butter and Put It On Everything

by Claire Lower on Skillet, shared by Claire Lower to Lifehacker

Bacon grease and butter are glorious cooking fats. They’re reasonable priced (one comes free with bacon), deeply flavorful, and both promote a good amount of browning. Rather than choose between these two earthly delights, you should combine them to create a fantastic compound butter.

Infinity War (Spoilers)

by Jim C. Hines

We don’t make it to opening weekend for most movies, but I figured with as much time as I spend online, this would be my only chance of seeing Infinity Wars before stumbling over spoilers.

Speaking of which…spoilers after the cut!

Get This Man a Shield Meme

All right, where to start… First off, major props to Marvel for the culmination of ten years of planning and buildup. Infinity War might not have been perfect, but I can’t think of another project that comes close to the scope and ambition of this one.

Now onto Jim’s scattered post-movie thoughts.

Alas, poor Loki. Dammit, man. You’re supposed to be clever. What were you thinking? (I’m just gonna console myself by replaying the moment he tells Thanos, “We have a Hulk.”)

Heimdall dies saving…the Hulk? The leader of Asgard is right there, and you use your power and sacrifice your life sending Bruce Banner home.

Bruce Banner and Scared Hulk. The movie never comes out and says Hulk is afraid after getting trounced by Thanos, but I’m assuming that’s why Bruce can’t transform anymore. Hulk is in many ways a very young child, and I liked the way this played out. Poor Bruce is so flustered and befuddled and overwhelmed. I loved it.

Yay, banter! So glad we still got moments of character humor. Strange and Wong talking about ice cream flavors…

Screw you and the Accords you rode in on! Thank you, Rhodey! (And I loved that the hologram of Ross was noticeably shorter than everyone else.)

Wanda and Vision. One of the things that makes Marvel movies work is that they take the time to lay groundwork and build the story. That never happened with Wanda and Vision, and I found it hard to care about their relationship. It reminded me of the Bruce/Natasha thing from Age of Ultron. It just felt forced.

Thanos and Gamora. This was another relationship that didn’t feel real to me. I don’t think we saw enough of their past to understand how or why they cared about each other. What did Thanos see in Gamora that was so special? Where was the father-daughter dynamic that made Gamora weep when she thought she’d killed him?

Nebula. She didn’t get much screen time, but I liked what they did with her. The torture was rather gruesome, but helped with the Nebula/Gamora dynamic. But the way Nebula escaped, and her arrival to help try to fight Thanos, were great. I like her character more with each movie she’s in.

Thanos. Not the worst Marvel villain, but definitely not the best, either. His motivation just never made much sense. The universe is overpopulated? Um…okay. So hey, you have infinite power now. Why not double the size and resources of the universe instead of killing half the population? Same outcome, right?

Contrast Thanos with Loki or Killmonger. In both of those cases, we see why the characters made the choices they made. We see their pain and anger and ambition. We see the betrayals and the failure. We can understand and sympathize with them, even if we don’t agree. Whereas with Thanos, he’s just…there. Big and purple and powerful and out to kill half the universe because that’s what his character is supposed to do.

Thor’s eye. Thank you, Rabbit! (Loved the Thor/Rocket dynamic.)

Quill, you absolute dumbass. Half the universe died because Starlord decided to punch Thanos in the face instead of waiting a few more seconds for Tony and Peter to get the gauntlet.

Peter Dinklage! I somehow missed that he was in this movie, but I loved his character. That exchange with Thor…

“You’ll be killed!”
“Only if I die.”

Dinklage’s response and expression were absolute perfection.

Okoye, Wanda, and Natasha. I want a movie that’s nothing but these three women teaming up to kick ass and take names.

Bucky and Rocket. Also an acceptable buddy movie for which I would pay all the money.

“Kick names and take ass!” I laughed.

Bruce’s giddiness when Thor arrives for the final battle. I don’t remember his exact words, but it was sweet.

Infinity stones fall, everybody dies. You’d think the death of half the Marvel universe would have more of an emotional impact, but I wasn’t feeling it. Peter Parker fading away, and Tony Stark’s reaction, was probably the strongest. But there was just too much, and it was too obvious at least some of these deaths would be undone in the sequel. Particularly given Dr. Strange’s line about this being the only way.

Which means another thirteen months of waiting to find out who, if anyone, is really dead instead of just “mostly dead.”

I’d be really impressed if they just made Spider-Man 2 and Black Panther 2 about everyone standing around mourning the deaths of Spider-Man and Black Panther… Especially if Shuri gets to be the new Black Panther!

Captain America and Iron Man. I really expected one or both of these characters to die. I’m thinking now that’s probably going to happen in part two.

That post-credits scene. Meh. Yes, I know you’re making a Captain Marvel movie. And it was amusing getting to see Samuel L. Jackson say, “Motherfu–” before getting Voldemorted. But this scene didn’t do much for me.

Overall, it was a big, crowded, busy crossover spectacle. It’s a movie that’s incredibly broad, but at the expense of depth. Good pacing, and a lot of the character moments worked really well, considering how much work those moments had to do. A fun popcorn flick, and an impressive accomplishment nonetheless, though.*

*Okay, yeah, maybe “fun” isn’t the right word…

#

I’m not thrilled about having to wait thirteen months to finish the story, but there’s just too much for one movie. Heck, this storyline could have easily been a trilogy…it might have been better as a trilogy, really. More time to develop characters and relationships and backstory and so on.

Anyway, that’s my post-Avengers thoughts. What did you think?

Hey. I am a 29 yr old female who for a slew of reasons happens to be completely inexperienced in matters of love/sex. I only just started dating a month ago and while it's going well, I feel overwhelmed by a sense of inadequacy. Like even if something does pan out what could I possibly have to contribute to the relationship? Am I just chasing a pipe dream? Is it too late for me to start looking for love/ sex? Or do I just need to calm the fuck down?

There are approximately 290,000 active commercial airline pilots in the world. Every day, they wake up to whiney kids, sick dogs, aging parents, annoying coworkers, and shitty commutes. Of course they also wake up to great runs, pretty sunrises, home-cooked meals, exotic locations, and trips home. Because they’re people. Normal people, in the grind of life, going to work and going home. And at work, they get to their gate, tick all the boxes, say their polite hellos to their passengers, and move a giant metal fuselage full of strangers 30,000 feet into the air going 500 mph across unexplored oceans of unsurvivable depth.

If someone made you pilot a commercial flight tomorrow, you would have reason to feel overwhelmed by a sense of inadequacy because you would literally be inadequate. You would have nothing to contribute to flying because you would have no idea how to fly a plane.

But you do have something to contribute to a relationship, because you do, in fact, know how to be in them. You, despite your not knowing it, have plenty of training. Right now, you’re in a small but very real relationship with me. You’ve come to me with curiosity, vulnerability, and even a dash of humor. I see that vulnerability and am coming back to you with what I hope is kindness and realism. But I don’t know for sure. I can’t know how you’ll receive this message, how you’ll relate to what I’m saying, or what you’ll think of me after. And that, really, is being in a relationship. Putting yourself out there, trying to be your best self, trying to help people, trying to know someone, and knowing that, sometimes despite all of this, sometimes the relationship you’re trying to forge will fail. That is true when we’re 6 on the playground on the monkey bars, it’s true when we’re 16 negotiating curfews and grades, it’s true when we’re 29 interviewing and flirting, it’s true when we’re 43 reassessing our marriages, it’s true forever.

I get that everyone else feels like an airline pilot, navigating skies out of your reach with flexibility and wisdom. But you don’t have to fly a plane to date. You answer a message. You make a joke. You send a text. You get ignored. You turn someone down. You ask someone out. And at whatever speed you’re comfortable with, you remove whatever literal and figurative layers you’re comfortable with.

You are allowed to feel overwhelmed. Everyone feels overwhelmed when approaching something they literally have no idea how to do. That’s OK. But that’s why we learn. That’s why we take our time but also take chances. That’s why flight school exists. That’s why dating blogs and books and movies and websites and everything else exists. So you can learn to date. Because the truth is, even people who’ve been holding hands on the playground since they were 9 can feel overwhelmed by the world of love. We’ve only written an infinite amount of story around the subject. You could say almost every single human is undone, overcome, and indeed overwhelmed by love and all its facets. And that’s OK. But inadequate? A pipe dream? Too late?

No. Too late is when you’re dead. Show yourself a little forgiveness. Because what you’ve shown me isn’t inadequacy, it’s hope. And really, that’s all you need.

Pete Lau bekräftar: OnePlus 6 får ett glasbakstycke

by Hugo

Pete Lau:

Appearance-wise, we’ve always maintained our signature horizon line and precise curve to the back of the device. From the OnePlus One to the OnePlus 5T, the horizon line and characteristic curve are important elements of our design language.

In addition to retaining the horizon design, we’ve also tried to incorporate glass materials on OnePlus 6. Although OnePlus is not the first manufacturer to use glass, we are confident that we are providing users with our interpretation of a familiar material.

OnePlus 6’s glass design is centered around creating a ”sense of value” and ”premium hand-feel.” As I mentioned at the beginning, people relate deeply to the products they use. We gave a lot of thought to how users should feel when they use the OnePlus 6. The advantages of glass over metal are manifold: glass communicates a transparent, bright, and pure feeling. The way glass transforms under different lighting is a particularly important challenge—the OnePlus design team tested over 70 glass prototypes before selecting the best one.

At the same time, we always want to create devices that feel premium to the touch. We care about the user’s experience from the moment they touch the device. We also want our devices to feel burdenless in the hand, even after an extended period of use. OnePlus users have exacting standards for great industrial design. These standards often push and challenge us to meet our users’ expectations, to commit an extra layer of detail and polish in everything we do.

As an example, the OnePlus 6’s glass back contains five printed layers of Nanotech Coating, a first in the smartphone industry. We applied 5 layers of Nanotech Coating instead of 3, even though the degree of separation between each layer is extremely subtle and tough to discern. However, the additional layers give the back of the device a stronger impression of depth that our most demanding users will surely appreciate. Closely examine the OnePlus 6 and you’ll indeed see this subtle nuance embedded in each device.

For the past 10 years, Marvel Studios has followed a simple structure. Make a bunch of movies, bring them together with a huge event, rinse, and repeat. And while we’ll see the beginning of the end of the current three-phase drama this weekend in Avengers: Infinity War, the films that follow are likely to do the same.

Mental Resiliency: Letting Go of the Guilt of Not Getting Things Done

by zenhabits
By Leo Babauta

It happens to all of us: we don’t get done what we hoped to get done, then we feel stressed or guilty about it.

It’s time to let that go, because it’s not helping us.

We can build resiliency around this, with a little mental training. And it will help us in magical ways.

Think about whether you’ve done any of these things:

  • Set out to do a certain habit (exercise, eating, meditation, writing) and then didn’t do it as planned. You feel guilty, disappointed in yourself, or just stressed.
  • Had a list of things you need to get done, and then didn’t get most of them done. This just added to your stress.
  • Planned to work on a project, or do some writing … and then procrastinated. Again, you felt guilty, disappointed or stressed.
  • Hoped to change your patterns, like eating or how you talk to others or how you practice mindfulness. Then everything goes to crap and you feel disappointed.

There are thousands of variations on these, but the main theme is that things didn’t go as you’d hoped, and that causes disappointment, guilt, stress.

Here’s the thing: there’s no problem with the failure to meet our expectations. The real problem problem is the expectations. And the stress that it causes when we don’t meet the expectations.

In all the examples above, we have this ideal in our heads about how things should be, how we want to be. There’s nothing wrong with that — we all do it, all the time — but the problem comes when we hold too tightly to the ideals/expectations. It causes difficulties: we feel let down, we feel anxiety, we feel anger or resentment at ourselves, we become unhappy.

This process of expectations and then not meeting them and then less happiness … it happens over and over, throughout the day. We are constantly doing this to ourselves.

This leads to stress, unhappiness, feeling overwhelmed, feeling like we can’t change, a lack of trust in ourselves. This is the real damage. It hurts everything we want to do, making it more likely that we just give up, because we don’t trust ourselves.

This is the problem.

The answer is to hold less tightly to our ideals. Become aware of our expectations (of ourselves, but also of others), and cling to them less. Toss them out, if possible, and just see what happens.

And love what actually happens. Love yourself as you are, not as you wish you’d be. Sure, endeavor to do good, out of love for yourself and others … but when you don’t meet those expectations, toss them out and love who you are, what you’ve actually done. Love reality.

Here’s the prescription, if you want one:

  1. Set an intention to love yourself by exercising, eating better, meditating, being kind to others, doing your work in the world. Set the intention out of love, then do the best you can.
  2. Whatever you do, notice your expectations, toss them into the ocean. Love what you actually do, love the moment and yourself no matter what. Let go of the useless guilt and stress and self-criticism.
  3. See what held you back from meeting your intention. Make an intentional change in your environment so that it won’t keep holding you back. Set another intention, out of love, but don’t cling to it. Repeat, over and over.

By letting go of these expectations, by tossing them into the ocean, we can let go of our difficulties and actually be at peace. Actually find contentment. Actually love ourselves. And this leads to a happiness with the world and ourselves that is incredible and that fills the heart up.

OnePlus 5T slut på lagret

by Lars A

by Martina

Godmorgon!

Här kommer ett litet exempel;

8 Sci-Fi & Fantasy Books the Biggest Forking Fans of The Good Place Will Love

by Nicole Hill

Holy shirt, do we miss The Good Place. As we wait for the third season of this sitcom of screwball antics in the afterlife, we’re itching to find sci-fi and fantasy readalikes offering the same blend of goofy and earnestness that makes Michael’s neighborhood the only spot to spend eternity.

While nothing can fill the Janet-shaped hole in our lives completely, these 8 SFF books each showcase one or another of the qualities that make The Good Place so forking wonderful.

Warning: Show spoilers ahead. (And you don’t want to spoil this show for yourself.)

Reincarnation Blues, by Michael Poore
In this enchanting take on the afterlife, every human being gets 10,000 reincarnations—10,000 chances to reach “perfection” and merge with the “Oversoul.” If you don’t, you wind up in the void (and not the cozy Derek-and-Janet kind). Milo is running out chances as he hits his 9,995th life, but he’s far more interested in finding love with Suzie, the literal embodiment of Death, than in finding perfection. Sound like any characters we know?

The Postmortal, by Drew Magary
There is a strong argument to be made that the alternate Earth Magary sketches out is actually the Bad Place. It certainly feels like it: in the near future, humanity has discovered the cure for aging—and stumbled into a political and ethical maelstrom that comes with it. In solving one problem, we created thousands more, including religious cults, government-sponsored euthanasia programs, and environmental strains. The story is told with wit and humor, but the very real debates it wages would both fascinate and paralyze Chidi.

Hogfather, by Terry Pratchett
Pratchett’s prodigious Discworld series is known for its humor, but his novels starring Death are simultaneously the hands-down funniest, and the most emotionally involved. Here, Death takes the standard skeletal Grim Reaper form, but he’s as fascinated by humans and their eccentricities as Michael is. In Hogfather, Death gets a chance to save these remarkable little creatures—or at least their holiday spirits—when he swoops in to take the place of Discworld’s Santa Claus analogue.

All Systems Red, by Martha Wells
While there are any number of “best” things about The Good Place, Good and Bad Janets certainly are near the top of the list. Murderbot is a slightly different AI than Janet, but one who struggles with the same robot-person identity issues. Murderbot was your average security bot until it hacked its governor module and gained a new form of sentience. Now, it spends its free time binge-watching trash TV and trying to figure its relationship with the humans it’s charged to protect.

Meddling Kids, by Edgar Cantero
If zany ensemble casts really hit the spot for you, give Cantero’s Blyton Summer Detective Club a shot. More than a decade after their final Scooby Doo-esque case, the formerly teen detectives have grown up, separately and to varying degrees of success. There are plenty of real, nutso monsters in this story, but the biggest baddies are the inner torments of its main characters. A perfect blend of nightmares and laughs, just like The Good Place.

Food of the Gods, by Cassandra Khaw
Much like Eleanor Shellstrop, Rupert Wong knows a thing or two about karma coming back to bite you in the ash. In a madcap romp through Kuala Lumpur and beyond, we find Rupert hustling to pay off spiritual debt with two jobs: one as a gruesome cannibal chef for ghouls and the other as a bookkeeper for Diyu, the 10-level Chinese hell. His adventures are as raucous, if far, far gorier, than the hijinks of Eleanor and the crew.

It Devours! by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor
If there’s any town that might understand the issues (fro-yo-related and otherwise) of Michael’s fake Good Place, it’s Night Vale. The second novel set in this bizarro desert town probes the relationship between science and religion in a way that is characteristically odd, dark, and funny, but also poignant and remarkable. Much as they did in The Good Place’s first season, mysterious sinkholes begin to dot Night Vale, consuming homes, business, schools, and the oddball locals inside them. Rather than Eleanor, however, the destruction seems tied to the mysterious Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God.

The Last Adventure of Constance Verity, by A. Lee Martinez
One topic The Good Place explores fairly frequently is the idea of fate. Michael’s subversive season-ending plan to see, given a few nudges, if his human charges could change their ways on Earth toys with predestination in a way that fits well with Constance Verity, seemingly fated to be an adventurer forever. That is, until Constance takes things into her own hands and comes up with a plan: kill the fairy godmother who cursed her with extraordinariness and hit the reset button on life.

What books would you send to the Good Place?

När keto inte fungerar | del 3 om livsstil

by Martina

Blodsockret förblir högt och vikten är all time high.

Sömnen måste vara on point!

Re-cap:

  1. 80E% fett i varje mål, gärna varje tugga
  2. Ta bort mejerier
  3. Kör Syclovir vid Candida
  4. Träna
  5. Rotera maten
  6. Sov 22-05
  7. Ge det tid
  8. Sluta vikthetsa

by Martina

Läste dina inlägg om just keto.

Stay keto!

Officiellt: OnePlus 6 har Snapdragon 845, 8GB RAM och 256GB lagring

by Lars A

Keep Facebook from Spying on You with Firefox's New Extension

by Jacob Kleinman

You can’t stop Facebook from tracking everything you do on the social network (unless you delete your account, of course), but there is a way to stop it from tracking where you go once you leave the company’s walled garden. All you need is Mozilla’s new Firefox browser extension: Facebook Container.

I have spent the last ten minutes at work beneath my desk; it is somewhere dark to collect my thoughts. I have been struggling to read through the edits and feedback scribbled on an annual report I drafted. Usually I handle feedback well and expect it, but every so often a voice rages at the back of my head. I question my ability as a writer. My question for you is this: how do you handle feeling discouraged?

Initially I usually handle it by announcing gloomily that I can no longer write, have never been any good at it, and anything I’ve managed to do so far in the writing business was probably just sheer blind luck anyway.

Then I mope a bit. I drink a lot of tea.  Check with Amanda and find out if she’d still love me if I never wrote anything again (she always says yes). Call my agent to apologise because, obviously, she will have to spend the rest of my life and hers getting me out of any existing writing contracts.

And then, after a few days of that, I get interested in something and start writing and get happy, and am usually vaguely surprised when someone mentions how miserable I was a few weeks before.

Betydligt högre pris för OnePlus 6 än för föregångaren?

by Lars A

My mom's cheapo wine sangria is better than all your fancy versions

by Kate Bernot on The Takeout, shared by Virginia K. Smith to Lifehacker

Is there a drink more synonymous with suburban backyard mom parties than sangria? It’s a subcategory of punch that allows a hostess to pre-assemble a witch’s cauldron of wine and fruit guaranteed to keep her friends moderately intoxicated all afternoon with minimal kitchen effort. As such, it is genius.

Die, Demon Cabbage, Die! (I Will Make You Like Brussels Sprouts)

by terribleminds

Let’s talk about Brussels sprouts.

And yes, it’s Brussels sprouts, not Brussel, because Brussel isn’t a thing, and Brussels is a real place in Belgium, and this is important, historically. Because it was in Brussels that, in 1815, an occultist named Amandine Olivier first conjured these tiny demon cabbages into existence. Amandine got drunk one night on a rare Belgian liqueur called Le Pipi du Diable, and then he cast a 9th-circle summoning spell which brought a woody stalk of sprouts — once used as Baphomet’s walking stick — over through the fontanelle separating our world and the Hell-world, and on this stalk were the first Brussels sprouts.

That’s important to know, because for a very long time, I thought Brussels sprouts were bullshit. I assumed, quite correctly, that they were little demon cabbages. I mean, I was right. They are. They’re like if you took a full-size cabbage, with all its implicit cabbageness, and then you used some kind of magic(k) to compress that cabbageness into something roughly the size of a golf ball. For a long time I had assumed that their best use was to freeze them and slingshot them at your enemies as they besieged your home. I also assumed that if you broke one open, angry fart ghosts would be released to wreak havoc on the world of the living.

But I have since learned that Brussels sprouts are not bullshit.

Well, not always. Most people don’t know how to cook them. I don’t know exactly why, but in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, people didn’t realize that sometimes the best way to treat a vegetable was to SCOURGE IT WITH FLAME, roasting those motherfuckers until they’re crispy and delicious. Instead people steamed vegetables, or worse, boiled them, and it is this latter preparation that plagued many of us, I assume, in our childhoods. Asparagus is a lovely spear of deliciousness, except when you boil it, in which case it becomes less a spear and more a fallen log long gone rotten in the woods. Veggies in this form become mushy, sad things — almost as if they have been pre-chewed in the mouth of a mournful widow.

Thing is, you can still roast Brussels sprouts and they can still turn out a hard, angry, bitter result. They can still emerge from your FIRE BOX still maintaining their demonic veneer. And so, many people — after long having learned to love difficult vegetables — still hold onto the belief that they do not, and will not, like Brussels sprouts.

Not in a box.

Not with a fox.

Not in some socks.

Not with the pox.

And I am here to change that.

And you will thank me.

You will lay a garland of laurels upon my brow, for I will be the champion who has rehabilitated the demon cabbages and given you a new FACE SENSATION inside your FACE. You will like it so much, you will try to send me money, and I will say nay, do not send me money, but buy my books, for I am a humble word-herder, nay, a simple and unassuming penmonkey seeking readers in this dark and tangled world.

Let us begin.

First, you need Brussels sprouts.

I suspect this is already where you resist.

DO NOT RESIST. Go. Get them. If you want the best, wait until the season where your local farmer’s market has them.

You want to buy ones that are not discolored and surly. They should be green and firm, not mushy or brown. They should also not have mouths and eyes. If they have mouths and eyes, the eggs have hatched, and now they are not merely sprouts, but rather, sproutlings, and they will bite off the tips of your fingers and thumbs because that is what they like most to eat.

Also, smaller sprouts are better.

Buy them.

Bring them home.

Show them your knife.

It is vital you show them the knife. You must hold the knife to them and let them know what’s coming. These are demon cabbages. Eggs from the devil’s own cloaca. They must be shown that humans control them — you have summoned them, and only the blade can truly tame them.

Now, cut off any stemmy bits. Up to a quarter inch into the sprout.

Then peel the outer leaves. The outer leaves are the exoskeleton. They are often tough and unpleasant and you must be rid of them. Get to the tender, soft leaf-meats within. One layer is usually good, but if they’re big-ass sprouts, maybe another layer down is necessary.

If the sprouts are small, bisect them.

If they’re larger — say, nearer to a golf ball size — then quarter them.

Scream at them as you cut them. Curse at them.

Then, let them sit and think about the horrors they have wrought.

Now, get your HELL BOX up to temperature.

I go 425, but if your oven runs cooler, go 450.

As the COALS OF HELL begin to fire, it’s time to make our sauce —

Whisk together:

4TB of real maple syrup

3TB of fish sauce

a blob of minced garlic

a bloop of minced ginger

the juice of half a lemon

the juice of half an orange

bit of salt

bit of pepper

four tears from a sad yeti

a bad dream

a good dream

and ten whispered promises that you will break

Already I feel you resisting.

It’s the fish sauce, I know. You’re thinking, why the fuck am I taking delicious maple syrup and mixing it with heinous fish sauce, and you’re right, fish sauce is heinous, if you go by the smell. The smell of fish sauce is like brined corpse-feet. Have you ever seen how they make it? Don’t. Don’t look. Spoiler warning: it’s dead fish. Left to get worse than dead fish already are. Left to break down into liquids. And then they just tap that briny death-keg and — ploomp — there’s your fish sauce. And I know, I know, Brussels sprouts are already bullshit, and now I’m asking you to put rotten fish slurry in there, too?

I am.

Your trust will be rewarded.

(Real-talk: fish sauce also kicks up soup. Chicken noodle soup is amazing with even one tablespoon of fish sauce into the pot. Failing your ability to use and possess fish sauce, you can instead use Worcestershire sauce. Which, ha ha ha sucker, is also fish sauce. But seriously: if you want to take nearly any soup or stew and kick it up a bit with an umami-bomb, use a little fish sauce and use a little sherry vinegar.)

Put this whisked concoction into a small saucepan.

BACK TO THE SPROUTS.

Get them in a bowl. Mix them with olive oil. Get them lubey, like they’re fooled into thinking they’re going to a vegetable orgy. Then, once sufficiently lubed, get them onto a cookie sheet onto some non-stick foil. Sprinkle salt over them.

Roast them for 20-30 minutes.

You want them brown and crispy, but not black and coal-like.

While the demon cabbages are being transformed by the fiery alchemy of your HELL BOX, get that saucepan on the stove, and turn it onto medium heat, and you want to reduce the sauce down — like, what, halfway? I dunno. You don’t want it loose and liquidy — you want it to become syrupy, like the maple syrup once was. Enough to coat the back of a spoon, but not so much that it, well, burns into some kind of napalm tar.

When the sprouts are out of the oven, get them in that bowl.

Then pour your reduced sauce over them.

Mixy mixy mix.

Then shove them into the BONE CAVE that is your MOUTH.

I mean, let them cool down first? Don’t just cram molten-hot Brussels sprouts in there, that’s fucked up, what’s wrong with you.

But once cool, eat them.

And then send me your infinite gratitude.

Oh! Here’s the other thing:

That sauce is also good on other roasted veggies — particularly other cruciferous veggies like broccoli. (They call these vegetables “cruciferous” because they crucified Jesus. It’s true, read your Bibles, kids.) If you want to mix other veggies in with the sprouts, you can: onions in there? Sure. Bacon in there? Sure. (Bacon is too a vegetable, shut up.) Note though that this does not require bacon — bacon, which I love, is also a cheat. You can stick bacon in a lot of terrible things and make them better. No, this recipe is good without it, and it is not required.

But it is nice.

(Last thought: this sauce also does well in fried rice.)

(And you can make it into fried breakfast rice with an egg overtop and Spam in there and okay fine bacon too, just shut up and make it.)

Go eat your vegetables.

And buy my books, thank you.

You Don't Have to Use Your Room Key to Operate Hotel Room Lights

by Emily Price

At least half the hotel rooms I end up staying in these days require that you stick your room key in a slot beside the door in order to do things like turn on the lights or use the power outlets. It’s a detail that I forget at least once a trip and end up spending a few minutes fumbling around trying to determine why…

i tried turning it off and back on again.

by Wil

A few months ago, the hardware in my iMac shit the bed one final time. Rather than replace it (Apple hardware is not that great, and certainly not designed to last), I decided to convert this epic Xidax gaming rig I have into my primary production machine.

It worked like a dream for a long time, and Windows 10 began to feel like a pretty decent OS, even if I missed some Mac OS UI features (hitting space to preview files, and easy keyboard screen shots were the two I missed the most.)

But about a week ago, something went wrong. Everything started slowing down like crazy, Chrome just quit working entirely, and even Firefox ran so slow, I felt like I was using a 386. So I used every bit of computer learning and troubleshooting I’ve picked up in thirty-five years of computer use, and I turned it off and back on again.

It wouldn’t start up.

So I booted from the DVD, and told it to repair the problem. That didn’t work.

So I attempted to reinstall Windows. That didn’t work.

So I formatted the drive that C: lived on, and tried to reinstall Windows. That didn’t work, and I lost a ton of media by mistake as a bonus (I have it backed up on a Seagate drive, but it’s still a pain in the ass to lose it).

I went to the Internet, and I downloaded a few Linux utility distros to check the hardware integrity on the machine. I booted from those CDs, ran their tools, and confirmed that everything was working correctly.

At this point, my lungs were aching for air.

I got super frustrated, because all the diagnostics I ran appeared to work, and every test told me that there wasn’t anything wrong. It just turns out that Windows won’t install, and it gives me the super helpful advice to check the install logs that I can’t read because when I boot from the Windows DVD, it won’t let me write to any of the mounted file systems.

So I’m moving my opinion dial from “Windows isn’t that bad” back to “Windows is awful garbage that is an affront to all good people in the world.”

Also, one kid seems to really love the Speedo Guy.

Spinning the dial was satisfying, but it didn’t give me a working OS that I could use to get my work done, so I grabbed the latest release of Debian Linux, and booted from the resulting live DVD. It felt familiar, and unlike my Windows nightmare, it Just Worked(tm). For longtime *nix users, especially the subset of us who started using Red Hat or Debian or Mandrake or whatever back in the late 90s, this reality — that Linux worked effortlessly and without any configuration hassles — will likely prove to be quite pleasing.

I wondered if there was a hardware problem that I hadn’t uncovered, maybe a failing HDD or something, and I decided that the best way to test it would be to attempt a Debian install.

About seventeen minutes later, I booted my machine from GRUB, and like a magical leprechaun, Debian just worked. I had to install a couple of drivers to get the most out of the graphics card, to get Flash and Java to go, and to update Chromium, but that was it.

I’m still annoyed with Windows and its lack of useful error messages, and I am confident that I’m not getting the most computing/processing/graphics/awesome power out of this epic machine, but I have an OS that is solid and stable, that is making it possible for me to do my work, browse the Internet, and read and send Email. There are some idiosyncrasies that I’m not crazy about, and there are a few mild frustrations (I can’t easily watch Netflix or Hulu because of stupid DRM issues, and some websites like Twitter are painfully slow), but I’m definitely turning my dial toward “Linux is awesome.”
