Los vídeos de 4096 suelen ser pequeñas joyas, pero este que publicó hace unos meses es espectacular: una cuidadísima animación con los diseños de las carátulas de las cintas de vídeo VHS más populares.

En el vídeo se transforman grácilmente unas en otras casi como si cada una de ellas hubiera sido concebida estéticamente con ese propósito, quizá siguiendo un estilo de época «from the past» y una escasez de tipografías (Helvética y poco más) propia de aquel entonces. Quizá sea porque tanto las primeras marcas (Basf, Polaroid, Sony) como las marcalacabra son tan similares.

Esto recuerda mucho al aspecto de las cintas de casete rusas, aunque aquí el protagonista sea el mítico VHS. Pero el transfondo es el mismo: lo que antes era viejuno ahora es vintage, lo que ahora parece un diseño vulgar y hortera entonces era lo que hoy llamarían tendencia. Que mejor ejemplo que esta pequeña maravilla para examinar el pasar del tiempo.

Lástima que sea recomendable guardar los huevos en la nevera, porque sería perfecto tener a este grupito de pingüinos decorando un rincón de nuestra cocina. Nos tendremos que conformar con contemplarlo cuando abramos el frigorífico.

La gracia del soporte para huevos Eggins es que cada uno de los seis pingüinos que lo componen lleven un huevo en el espacio que correspondería a su barriga. Eso sí, los huevos han de ser blancos. Este es el único problema a tener en cuenta; con los marrones no queda bien.

A partir de ahí, nuestro soporte tiene dos funciones, la decorativa y la práctica, porque gracias a su asa lo podemos usar para colocar los huevos en el cazo, para hervirlos, y poder retirarlos cuando estén duros sin correr riesgo de quemarnos con el agua hirviendo.

Ya no sorprende a nadie la sobreprotección que, hoy en día, muchos padres aplican sobre sus hijos, sea cual sea la edad que tengan. Pero, estadísticamente, es en el caso de los más pequeños cuando más pánico existe ante la posibilidad de que el retoño sufra cualquier tipo de daño.

Especialmente si el bebé es el primer hijo de la pareja. No en vano dicen que el primer hijo lo cría el pediatra, el segundo los padres y el tercero se cría solo.

Estas mochilitas están ideadas para evitar el doloroso trauma (más para los padres que para los niños) de que el bebé se caiga de espaldas y golpee el suelo con la cabeza.

Además, el artilugio tiene otra propiedad determinante: es gracioso. O sea, que tiene todos los ingredientes para convertirse en compra obligada en cuanto el bebé tenga fuerza para mantenerse erguido.

Ukrainian artist Zhanna Kadyrova creates sculptural representations of clothing from found ceramic tiles which are often displayed in situ. She began the series, Second Hand, while in Sao Paulo in 2014 after discovering the rich decorative patterns of tiles used to cover Brazil’s shops, cafes, and residential buildings. For her first works, she bought several styles of “second hand” tiles which she then constructed into garment-like objects which were displayed on standard wooden hangers.

For the series, Kadyrova has also worked with a silk factory in the Ukraine in 2015, and sourced tiles from the Film Processing Department of the Kiev Cinema Copy Factory in 2017. This year, she produced an installation for the Galleria Continua in Cuba which runs through August 25, 2019, and will have work on view at FOAF Prague later this month. Toying with the concept of what a book can be, American designer Ben Denzer (through his publishing house Catalog Press) binds unusual collections of objects to create humorous volumes that you’re unlikely to find in a library. The limited edition books have been sold in the Whitney Shop, landing in the hands of a few lucky collectors. The unique objects have also found their way into the collections of museums and universities around the world.

A graphic designer with a degree in Architecture and Certificate in the Visual Arts, Denzer has created books of bound cheese slices, ketchup and sweetener packets, napkins, sequentially numbered dollar bills, and other books. The covers and spines feature the Catalog Press logo as well as well bold text announcing what the “reader” will find inside. In an interview with Its Nice That, Denzer shared his stance on books as “both content and object; simultaneously sculpture and catalog, singular contained multitudes.” He added that through Catalog Press he can “use the idea of the book as a catalogue to explore these wackier ideas while at the same time experimenting with more constrained design moves.”

Woodworker Uli Kirchler’s “very hidden castles” are nestled within gnarled tree burls. The Portland, Oregon-based artist originally hails from Italy, and works with unique pieces of wood with textural surfaces and variegated colorations. He has developed a process of carving multi-story towers that telescope in and out of the wood with the flick of a wrist. The stacked, castle-like towers appear to be built on the rocky hillsides emulated by the knots, burls, and twists in the wood’s natural shape. Taiichiro Yoshida’s metal sculptures (previously) are so meticulously crafted and impossibly delicate that one could be forgiven for thinking they are digital renderings. However, Yoshida is an accomplished metalsmith who uses silver, bronze, and copper to form the leaves, flowers, and butterflies that cover the bodies of each mammal or bird. Every petal, leaf, and wing is hand-formed, with the coloration created by heating and cooling the metals at specific temperatures. The 29 year-old Japanese artist earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in metal carving at Tokyo University the Arts. He has exhibited widely and most recently had a solo exhibition at Gallery Kogure in Tokyo. See more of Yoshida’s sculptures on the artist’s website.

Si adoras a los gatos en general, y al tuyo en particular, estas de suerte: con estos disfraces ya tienes resuelto el disfraz para los próximos carnavales.

Será un disfraz para parejas bastante sencillo. Básicamente son dos capuchas, una para ti y otra para la mascota.

Si luego quieres extender la equipación por el resto de ambos cuerpos, puedes intentarlo, aunque me temo que el mero hecho de colocarle un gorro como éste a un gato puede ser una tarea realmente complicada. Y no solo eso, luego hay que conseguir que acepte ser cogido en brazos para hacerse la imprescindible foto que adornará tu cuenta de Instagram.
