Play a game of Mega Man ZZZZZZ with this pillow set

by David Hinkle
This Mega Man mega buster pillow is the coolest We understand that you're on the fringe of sleeping - a renegade REMer who doesn't conform to society's rules of rest - but you've seriously got to stop using that Dead or Alive 5 body pillow; it's gross. Enter this more wholesome and elaborate Mega Man sleeping ensemble from Capcom, including a Mega Buster pillow you can slide your arm into and a Mega Man helmet pillow you can slide your head into.

The kit isn't for sale yet - it's coming in July - but Capcom has already opened up pre-orders through its Japanese site. The helmet and cannon will set you back ¥6,090 (around $60). Not listed: the price of waking from a dream world where Mega Man Universe exists only to find out it doesn't exist at all.

The Best Coffee Mug Improvement Since the Handle

by Andrew Liszewski

The Best Coffee Mug Improvement Since the HandleThey say if you build a better mouse trap the world will beat a path to your door. And the same will probably hold true for the first coffee shop to adopt this clever spoon-securing NOTA coffee mug designed by Lee Hae Seung Scott.

Often times a hot beverage will require more than just an initial stirring, having you either trying to find a clean place to keep your spoon in the interim, or leaving it in the mug and where it hits you in the face as you try to drink. Both are less than ideal solutions, but the latter is no longer an issue with the NOTA mug that features a set of built-in supports preventing a spoon from sliding around. It's as brilliant a solution as it is simple, and while not for sale, it thankfully doesn't look like a design that's too difficult to steal. [Little Thoughts Group via Yanko Design]

Forget Endless Runners, Here's an Endless Action RPG

by Mike Fahey

A half-hour with FDG Entertainment's Slayin has convinced me that the action role-playing games I enjoyed as a much younger man were woefully inefficient.

Imagine all the things I might have accomplished if I hadn't spent hour after hour traveling expansive maps, poking things with my pixel sword in order to gain the power to poke more powerful things. The time wasted wading through dialog or checking for more powerful equipment at the local village store could have been applied to much more productive pursuits. Why, I might be a doctor right now — an official one, and not just a guy that printed up his own doctor business cards at Fedex Kinkos.

But no, that time is gone and I'm just writer boy standing in front of an audience girl (many of you are male, but collectively), suggesting she might have a good time playing Slayin, an entire action RPG on one half of a screen.

There's not much to say about the game that you won't see in this video.

You move left and right, pointing your sword in the direction of monsters. You jump to avoid them (or at least your starter character does) or hit high-flying enemies. Occasionally a shopkeeper appears, letting you pop in for a quick upgrade before wading back into the action. Regular boss fights happen.

When you die you are dead, left with nothing but fond memories of your former glory and accumulated currency, used for unlocking new characters, controller skins and tombstones to share with your friends.

Now I wouldn't trade a grand action RPG like Secret of Mana or The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for Slayin. It's not a replacement; it's a supplement, a means for gamers without the time to relive the classics to get the sensation of playing without the time investment. These days, with minutes at a premium, I really appreciate the condensed experience.

In closing, this right here.

David Hayter: Hearing someone else as Snake 'makes me a little ill'

by Jessica Conditt
David Hayter on his absence from MGS5 David Hayter, the voice of Snake since 1998's Metal Gear Solid, won't reprise his role in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain - and that sucks, Hayter writes in an elongated Twitter post.

"If it were my choice, I would do this role forever," Hayter says. "To hear anyone else's voice coming from Snake's battered throat, makes me a little ill, to be honest. But the truth is - it's not my choice. Any and all casting decisions are the sole purview of Hideo Kojima, and Konami itself. And that's fair."

Konami never approached Hayter for the role, Hayter writes. He found out the production team "wouldn't be needing" him in December, when the recording sessions for Phantom Pain began in Los Angeles.

"No reason, or explanation was given beyond that. And that was it," Hayter says. He was "bummed" by the news. Konami head Hideo Kojima wants Phantom Pain to represent a "new Metal Gear game" and hasn't revealed who the new voice actor will be.

"To be clear, I love being a part of the world of Metal Gear," Hayter writes. "I admire its technological innovations, the gameplay, the political message of it all. But primarily, I love the fans of these games. Two grown men burst into tears upon meeting me at the Vancouver Fan Expo last year. Now that ... Is a rare and excellent role. You know you're making an impact. And I love doing it."

Read Hayter's full description of events here. Yes, it's elongated by Twitter standards, but it's by no means a long read; it's simply concise and quietly sad.

Torment: Tides of Numenera gets its first screenshot

by Sinan Kubba
Torment Tides of Numenera gets its first screenshot This is your first screenshot of Torment: Tides of Numenera, the Planescape: Torment-inspired RPG which is already up to $3.2 million in Kickstarter funding with four days left to go. What you're looking at, project lead Kevin Saunders tells us, is an environment called The Bloom, which also happens to very much be a living creature. Yes, it's both a bustling commercial hub and a "semi-sentient predator" - sounds like Manhattan to us.

The Torment Kickstarter washed past its $900,000 goal, amassing $1 million in just 8 hours. The campaign for the PC, Mac, and Linux game has broken more than a few stretch goals since then, unlocking everything from new areas, character companions, and novellas to developer inXile bringing in a live orchestra for the music. The traditional late Kickstarter surge should see the fundraiser past the $3.5 million stretch goal, at which point Obsidian's Chris Avellone, who was the lead designer of Planescape: Torment, will join Torment's design team.

Click here for a larger look at Torment's first screenshot.

by Germain Lussier

It’s a one-minute long behind the scenes featurette that has some footage featuring the town, the cast, and some of the effects. Check out the video below.

Thanks to Deadline for the link.

Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment is producing and Neal Baer (ER) has signed on as the showrunner. Niels Arden Oplev, the director of the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, will helm the first episode. New ‘World War Z’ Poster: Zombies Attack a Helicopter

by Germain Lussier

World War Z- Poster header

World War Z- Poster header

Usually when a movie stars Brad Pitt, his recognizable face is all over the posters. On the second teaser poster for his new film, World War Z, he’s nowhere to be seen. Instead it’s the terrifying image of a literal mountain of zombies climbing on top of each other to take down a helicopter. The image is bold and seems to say that, though Pitt is the star, the zombies are the real force behind the film.

Directed by Marc Forster, based on the book by Max Brooks, World War Z opens June 21. See the full poster below, and keep an eye out for the trailer later tonight at midnight PST.

Here’s the first teaser poster for World War Z. Click on it for a bigger version.

We’ll have more on World War Z this week, including a footage review and interview with Forster.

The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop a pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

Early Buzz: Latest ‘Pacific Rim’ Test Screening Draws Big Praise [Updated With New Poster]

by Angie Han

pacific-rim-trailer-2pacific-rim-trailer-2

As a Guillermo del Toro-directed film about giant robots battling giant monsters, Pacific Rim was automatically burdened with sky-high expectations. But the more we hear about it, the more it sounds like it actually lives up to them and then some. The first test screening last month was met with glowing approval. Now another test screening from this past weekend has yielded even more overwhelmingly positive responses. Hit the jump to read more.

It’s unclear how the cut shown this past weekend differs from the one shown in February. As with all test screening reactions, it’s worth keeping in mind that the version the audience saw was probably not the final theatrical cut. But unless del Toro makes some really, really drastic changes between now and July, it sounds like we’re in for a hell of a ride.

Of all the responses I caught on Twitter, this may have been the most “negative.” And by “negative,” I mean “still pretty positive.”

@chillimouth Didn’t love the movie as much as I thought I would, but Max did a great job and he looked good too ;)

— anna bartsch (@annabartsch) March 23, 2013

This individual seemed entertained but not blown away.

I just saw this movie called Pacific Rim. It was a fun escape. (Probably comes out in the summer)

— Hugh Moore (@Hugh_Moore) March 24, 2013

And this viewer acknowledged that the fact that she saw the movie early and for free may have colored her reaction.

Btw, Pacific Rim was pretty awesome. It was also awesome cause it was free. And it was an early screening.

— Tyra Lee Kristiansen (@tyraaalee) March 23, 2013

Del Toro fans were not disappointed.

Just saw Pacific Rim. Thank You Guillermo Del Toro, thank you.

— Derek Housman (@DerekHousman) March 23, 2013

https://twitter.com/Matt__Russell/status/315895696777703424

Screened #PacificRim it’s everything you hoped for and more. Also got to meet Guillermo del Toro as well. What a class act. #Blockbuster

— AJ Aquino (@AJisLost) March 23, 2013

It helps that the premise itself is already pretty awesome, as this person points out.

Pacific rim was the shiiiit. You can’t go wrong with giant mecha battles

— Manuel Berrios (MBP) (@Alex_MBP) March 24, 2013

Pacific Rim won’t hit theaters for another several months, but if this tweet is any indication there are already people eager to see it again.

https://twitter.com/TeelaJBrown/status/315658389566926849

Audience members were likely told not to talk about the film, but lots of folks just couldn’t help themselves.

I didn’t see Pacific Rim, but if I did, I would tell you to see it because it is visually stunning. Also I did not chat briefly w Del Toro

— David Atchison (@DavidNAtchison) March 23, 2013

@dblackanese @derekhousman I just got home and I haven’t done anything. I don’t even want people talking to me. I just want to think robots

— David Atchison (@DavidNAtchison) March 24, 2013

Guillermo del Toro told me “Tell all my friends” bout a movie I didn’t just watch that had GIANT ROBOTS beatin da fuck out of GIANT MONSTERS

— Deric A. Hughes (@dblackanese) March 23, 2013

So I won’t tell u how fuckin awesome this movie might be & I definitely won’t tell u how u might exit the movie feeling six years old again.

— Deric A. Hughes (@dblackanese) March 23, 2013

@eruditechick sad part is, once you see it, you’ll want to see it again. And again. Until you come to realize it’ll NEVER be enough.

— Deric A. Hughes (@dblackanese) March 24, 2013

@eruditechick seriously, big screen cinema drug. You are physically dizzy and exhausted from excitement when it’s all over.

— Deric A. Hughes (@dblackanese) March 24, 2013

But for sheer enthusiasm, no one could top Robert Meyer Burnett.

So. I just saw the nearly-finished PACIFIC RIM. I know I’m prone to hyperbolic statements…but believe me…PACIFIC RIM is STUNNING.

— Robert Meyer Burnett (@BurnettRM) March 23, 2013

Guys, remember the first time you got a blowjob and how it lasted for ten seconds? Well, PACIFIC RIM is just like that, BUT FOR TWO HOURS!

— Robert Meyer Burnett (@BurnettRM) March 23, 2013

PACIFIC RIM is, after all, a movie about GIANT ROBOTS fighting GIANT MONSTERS. Within that paradigm, it’s sheer perfection.

— Robert Meyer Burnett (@BurnettRM) March 23, 2013

Know what the absolute BEST part of #PACIFICRIM is? It will wipe the cynicism and snark right off every geek pundit’s face. #smileseveryone

— Robert Meyer Burnett (@BurnettRM) March 24, 2013

Burnett went on in that vein for hours; check his Twitter feed for even more comments.

Again, these early reactions should be taken with a grain of salt. I’m guessing that most or all of the people who went to the screening had to sign NDAs. The ones who disliked the film, then, were probably less inclined to risk pissing off the studio by breaking that contract.

The hype around this film is so strong right now that I fear the film can’t possibly live up. But even if some of these reports are a bit exaggerated it’s clear del Toro has a great summer treat in store for us with Pacific Rim. Look for the movie in theaters July 12.

Update: We’ve gotten word that no NDAs were signed at the screening. Staff told audience members not to talk about the movie, but del Toro encouraged viewers to tell their friends about the film. Adjust your impressions accordingly.

Update #2: A new poster has been released for the film:

Capcom reveals DuckTales Remastered, developed by WayForward [update]

by JC Fletcher
Capcom reveals DuckTales Remastered, developed by WayForward update
Capcom is bringing back DuckTales in a new game developed by WayForward Technologies. This is one of the two new games teased by Capcom ahead of the "World of Capcom" panel, along with Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara.

The new DuckTales, of course, is inspired by the NES classic, a Mega Man-esque game in which Scrooge McDuck used his cane as both a golf club and a pogo stick. The new version has new hand-drawn sprites, and features original voice work. It's coming to Wii U, PSN, and XBLA for $15.

Update: DuckTales Remastered is actually a full remake of the NES game, with new features including a museum and "A MONEY BIN YOU CAN ACTUALLY SWIM IN!" So we've now solved that mystery, and rewritten history to reflect it.

'Most game designers really just suck,' says RPG legend Richard 'Lord British' Garriott

by Sam Byford
Screen_shot_2013-03-21_at_4

Richard Garriott, the space-faring developer who created the Ultima series and recently announced his return to games with the successful Shroud of the Avatar Kickstarter project, has come out swinging with some harsh words for his peers. "I've met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am," said "Lord British" in an interview with PC Gamer. "I'm not saying that because I think I'm so brilliant. What I'm saying is, I think most game designers really just suck, and I think there's a reason why."

‘Kick-Ass 2′ Character Posters: Make New Friends, But Keep the Old

by Angie Han

Kick-Ass 2 - Kick-Ass and The Mother FuckerKick-Ass 2 - Kick-Ass and The Mother Fucker

The first Kick-Ass featured but a handful of costumed heroes and villains, but Kick-Ass 2 will introduce us to a whole lot more. The Jeff Wadlow-directed sequel sees Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) joining forces with the do-gooder team Justice Forever, while Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) refashions himself The Mother Fucker and amasses an evil army of his own.

A new series of character posters offers a closer look at the three returning players, while introducing us to three new faces: Mother Russia (Olga Kurkulina) and Black Death (Daniel Kaluuya) on the side of bad, and Night-Bitch (Lindy Booth) on the side of good. Check them out after the jump, but be warned that Red Mist’s new name makes them NSFW for language.

[via Coming Soon]

Surprising there isn’t one for Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), considering he’s one of the bigger stars and one of the more important characters. We also haven’t seen much of franchise newcomers John Leguizamo, Donald Faison, or Robert Emms so far. Maybe their posters will be along later.

Night-Bitch is a Justice Forever teammate who, according to the Kick-Ass Wiki, was inspired to join up by the death of her sister. Mother Russia is The Mother Fucker’s ex-KGB bodyguard, and Black Death is another member of the villain’s bad-guy gang.

Kick-Ass 2 lands in theaters August 16.

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.

Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

‘Escape From New York’ Reboot Gets New Life, Will Feature Origin Story Elements

by Russ Fischer

escape-from-ny

escape-from-ny

Most of the biggest John Carpenter properties have either been remake or given some sort of new life (Halloween, The Fog, The Thing) or have been targeted for potential remakes (They Live, Escape From New York).

Escape From New York tells the story of a convict who is sent into Manhattan — now a maximum security prison hellhole — to rescue the President of the United States, who has crashed on the island and is hostage to a local kingpin. The Escape remake was left dead in the water at New Line two years back when the option lapsed, but now it has been given new life. (And not as the Guy Pearce film Lockout, which does have a pretty similar plot outline.)

Joel Silver (The Matrix) is working with StudioCanal to produce a reboot in the hopes of launching a new franchise.

Deadline says that Silver has envisioned a trilogy that will be “an entirely new take on the material.” The first film will be an origin story described as a Rise of the Planet of the Apes-style film.

In other words, we get to see how New York falls. Rise of the Prison of New York, if you will. Or perhaps we’ll just learn the origin of Snake Plisskin. Yawn. A writer has not yet been hired. I hope whoever gets the nod has really good ideas about how Snake loses his eye.

If it isn’t already clear, this will be an entirely new effort, so the various talent that was attached to the last remake attempt (producer Neil Moritz and The Crazies helmer Breck Eisner, for example) aren’t part of this one.

James Mangold’s ‘The Wolverine’ Sneak Peek and Trailer Coming Next Week

by Angie Han

wolverine-night-out-headerwolverine-night-out-header

We’ve seen promotional stills, character portraits, inspiration photos, and behind-the-scenes peeks from The Wolverine. We’ve heard all about the plot, the cameos, the timeline, and the themes. And so far, it all looks and sounds great. But a film doesn’t work unless what’s actually moving around on the screen does, and so far, we’ve yet to see a lick of footage from the James Mangold-directed film.

Fortunately, that’s all about to change. Mangold revealed today that the very first sneak peek will hit next week, followed a day later by the trailer. The timing fits perfectly with earlier rumors that the promo would be attached to G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Hit the jump for the details.

Mangold took to Twitter to give fans the new info. In response to one fan’s question about G.I. Joe: Retaliation, he responded:

@movie_maniac_ @gijoemovie The Teaser comes out on that date, yes. It will be about 2 minutes. The trailer (longer) will follow after that.

— James Mangold (@mang0ld) March 16, 2013

Mangold then made himself even clearer:

Clarity for all asking: I will tweet a peek (a “tweazer”) on 26th. Full teaser online on 27th. 3D and 2D in theaters on the big screen 29th.

— James Mangold (@mang0ld) March 18, 2013

“Tweazer” isn’t a word I think I’ve ever seen before, but given the context it’s obvious he means one of those trailer-for-the-trailers. Those never show much, but according to a recent listing on Alberta Culture (via CBM), the full-length trailer clocks in at 1:51. That should be give fans plenty to sink their teeth into.

The Wolverine tears into theaters July 26. Hugh Jackman leads the cast, which also includes Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto, Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, and Brian Tee.

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

Persona 4 Arena bashes Europe May 10

by Sinan Kubba
Nayef Al Baloushi

Finally. This shall be remembered as one of the biggest trollings in gaming history.

Persona 4 Arena finally has a European release date of May 10. After last week saw the silhouette of a May window fizzling onto the Midnight Channel - or distributor Zen United's Facebook page - today's much clearer announcement means the brawling follow-up to Persona 4 reaches the continent just under a year after its release in Japan.

Arena's much-delayed arrival on the continent is compounded by Atlus' decision to region-lock the game, including the recent PSN version in North America. Europe originally expected the PS3 and Xbox 360 game on August 31, and then before the end of 2012.

Zen United says it doesn't expect to have to announce any further delays, the distributor instead cheerily revealing a pre-order bonus from all retailers, which includes the original P4A Arrange soundtrack, some exclusive artwork, and a "Digital Fan Pack."

Oculus Rift working with Valve for 'Team Fortress 2' support, but 'Doom 3' won't ship with dev kit

by Adi Robertson
Ellisoculus_3_large

As Oculus prepares to reveal more details about its virtual reality headset at 2013's Game Developers Conference, we're getting a bit of news beforehand — some good, some less so. In the former category, an anonymous tipster has told Road to VR that Valve will be adding Oculus Rift support to Team Fortress 2 next week. According to an allegedly leaked release, a software update sometime during GDC will enable an "experimental virtual reality mode," letting Oculus Rift development kit owners play any mode and character class with it. According to Road to VR, they'll also receive a Steam code for a special in-game hat.

Valve already revealed that it had ported Team Fortress 2 to the Oculus Rift, and a GDC talk will discuss what was...
