Oculus Rift, Kinect and a stationary bike power virtual reality Paperboy homage
Using the combined technologies of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, a Kinect motion sensor and a stationary bike outfitted with a Bluetooth-enabled Kickr training device, tech company Globacore has created an immersive first-person homage to classic Atari arcade game Paperboy.
Dubbed PaperDude VR, the game is built in Unity and captures the essence of Paperboy, if not wholly recreating it. Thanks to the Oculus Rift, players get a full 3D view of their virtual paper route, while Kinect tracks the motion of thrown newspapers based on arm movement and hand position. The Kickr, paired with an iPad, tracks speed and cadence as players pedal their way through an on-rails course, according to the developer.
Players are rewarded for...

Super Smash Bros. fan petition begins to make Reggie Fils-Aime a playable character
John DruryHis body will be ready.

A new petition is currently underway at Change.org, in an attempt to collect signatures of fans hoping to see a playable Reggie Fils-Aime in Nintendo's upcoming Super Smash Bros.
The petition, which can be signed right here, pushes forward the idea that the Nintendo of America COO could "use Nintendo controllers and characters to his advantage as attacks." The movement is also encouraging Twitter users to directly contact Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai to increase the chances of a playable Reggie.
"To raise awareness about this, please use the hashtag #ReggieForSmashBros and Tweet to @Sora_Sakurai to let him know about this petition. Also Tweet to @NintendoOfAmerica, @NintendoEurope, and @NintendoUK; and post about this on...
Fez 2 canceled, Phil Fish confirms (updated)

Fez 2 has been canceled by developer Polytron, according to a tweet on the developer's official account.
It's with a heavy heart that we announce that FEZ II has been cancelled and is no longer in development. We apologize for the disappointment
— Polytron (@Polytron) July 27, 2013
Fez creator Phil Fish has confirmed the cancellation with us via email, saying "Yep. I'm done." No details have been given as to why the game is canceled.
Shortly before the announcement, an argument between Fish and writer Marcus Beer broke out on Twitter in response to Beer's comments during a recent episode of GameTrailer's Invisible Walls. During the episode, Beer touched on the media's recent efforts to reach out to indie developers during...
The Straw
John DruryYOU DIED!
Even if I would make a detour to pick items which would make this part of the game easier, I just think it's terrible design. It's a pitch black zone full of strong enemies and bottomless chasm. It's a recipe for frustation and was the straw which broke the camel's back.
I deeply enjoyed Demon's Souls but Dark Souls just doesn't do the same for me. There are stuff like being cursed and needing to farm souls to be uncursed which just leech all fun of playing. Some deaths are cheap, which I never feel in the first one.
I could finish Dark Souls, but only if I wanted to prove myself I could do it, and not because I'm having fun with it.

Learn The Costco Price Tag Code To Save More Cash
John DruryCostco Tipz

This price tag has both the “.97″ ending and the “*” in the upper-right corner, indicating it is discounted and won’t be reordered once it sells out. (HubPages.com)
In an article overstuffed with helpful info about shopping at Costco, HubPages’ Len Rapoport breaks down what to look for when scoping out the price tags on your local Costco shelves.
Here are just some of those helpful hints:
1. Prices ending in “.97″ have probably been marked down.
While Costco doesn’t always end the price with “.99,” Rapoport claims that anything ending in 97 cents has been marked down.
2. Items with an “*” in the upper right-hand corner aren’t being reordered.
That asterisk in the upper right-hand of the price tag means you probably won’t be seeing that product again once the stock is sold out. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been discounted, but it likely means the price won’t get any lower.
3. Look for odd pricing.
The 97-cent thing is an indicator of a discount, but Rapoport says that other non-standard prices — like items ending in .49, .79, .89 — can be a sign that Costco got a special deal from the manufacturer, which might mean very low prices for you.
Over on Lifehacker’s coverage of this story, a commenter claims that BJ’s has its own codes to look out for and that prices ending in .90 or .00 are Manager discounts on discontinued items.
EarthBound now available on Wii U Virtual Console for $9.99

EarthBound, the venerated sci-fi role-playing game from Shigesato Itoi, is now available on the Wii U Virtual Console for $9.99 along with a digital Player's Guide, Nintendo announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation today.
Nintendo said in April that it would release EarthBound on Virtual Console this year; it launched in Japan in March.
The company is also digitizing the EarthBound Player's Guide, which shipped with copies of the original 1994 SNES title. The extensive resource will be available on the game's website, and according to Nintendo's Bill Trinen, the company has optimized it for viewing on the GamePad so it can be used as a handy resource while playing the game.
Update: The Nintendo Direct session included a trailer...
Gearbox releasing remakes of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 for Windows PC
John DruryLet's hope they don't release a new game in the series. Worst developer.

Gearbox will release high-definition remakes of Relic Entertainment's realtime strategy series to Windows PC, the original Homeworld and Homeworld 2, the company announced at its PAX Australia panel today. The company will also release the original two titles to digital distribution platforms for Windows PC.
Gearbox bought the Homeworld IP for $1.35million in April, following the approved sale of publishers THQ's games and studios for $72 million in January. At the time, Gearbox issued a statement saying that Brian Martel, Gearbox Software's chief creative officer, only had great love and respect for the Homeworld franchise and "personally spearheaded the acquisition." The company said that preserving the Homeworld games is Martel's...
South Park's creators explain how The Stick of Truth got too big for its own good
John DruryI really REALLY want this game. The more I hear and see about it the more excited I get.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creator of South Park, said games like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, EarthBound, Paper Mario and The Legend of Zelda were key influencers in their decision to make South Park: The Stick of Truth. Drawing inspiration from those games, however, led to ambition that got the best of them.
"I really loved playing Skyrim, as many people did," Parker said during a Comic-Con panel today. After getting lost in the expansive world and huge cast of characters of Bethesda's game, "I was like 'Let's do this. This is easy.'"
That led to a script that Parker said ballooned to some 850 pages filled with "just about every character" and element from South Park. He said that when the South Park team and developers at Obsidian...
The Steam Summer Sale Conspiracy
John DruryIT ALL MAKES SENSE!

What if everything you knew about the 2013 Steam Summer Sale was a lie?
Okay, that's a little extreme. Valve's annual fire sale is still going strong, offering deep discounts on much of the digital storefront's content. But an astute Redditor with a keen eye who goes by "rawberry1110" discovered that Valve might have hidden a message about a certain unreleased sequel in the Summer Sale-specific cards.
Check out the image below for a deep dive into what could be the grandest conspiracy of 2013. You'll find a mix of hidden objects, numerology and just plain creative thinking — all of which points to a July 22 announcement of ... something.
Dropsy: The surreal adventure game the Internet made
John DruryHoly shit, I remember this thread from forever ago.

They say that forums are the dregs of the Internet but over the years comedy website Something Awful earned its stripes as the home of one of the most successful and tireless meme-generators and content creators online. Its output is varied, but a few years ago collaboration between members of its forum resulted in the creation of a makeshift choose-your-own adventure game that told the tale of a slightly sweet if slightly grotesque clown: Dropsy.
This is the game the Internet made, the result of hours of user input pieced together by artist and developer Jay Tholen. It's five years later and Tholen has taken to Kickstarter to expand the forum creation into a full open world adventure game: Dropsy: A Surreal Exploration.
Tholen's...
Half-Life Free: Sven Co-op Reborn

People of a certain age (oh, alright: old people) will remember Sven Coo-op. It was probably the first action co-op game I played, back when my monitor had a degauss button. I degaussed the hell out of that boxy beauty. It brought co-op to Half-Life and its various mods. It was party co-op, though. Piles of players, bizarre maps, everyone having a good time. Well [record scratch] that good time is now OVER. The mod is now no more, shutting down after 14 year of development. Version 4.8 adds Blue Shift compatibility, but it’ll be the last mod version. [pause for sad news to take effect] Come back here! It’s not going away: Sven Co-op will be reborn as a free, standalone game on Steam, allowing everyone to play Valve’s ancient single-player classic with friends, even if they don’t own it.

Nord Storm: Skyrim Mod Falskaar Is Basically DLC

Living in Skyrim must be like having Charlie Kaufman as your god. You’d be pottering along, chopping wood, checking the sky for falling dragon poop, just doing your best as a person living in interesting times. You’re not noticing the changes that are happening right under your nose: the flowers look prettier, you can’t speak when you want to, and before you know what’s going on there’s an airship overhead. The hands of mod, reshaping your reality. I expect most of the inhabitants have just woken up to the new neighbouring landmass of Falskaar. The mod adds a remarkable amount of new stuff to base Skyrim, clicking in a new continent of content for you to play. Everyone seems to be talking about it, and with good reason.

Steam Summer Sale snapshot: Fez sells 105K units in two days
On Twitter, Fez creator Phil Fish described the numbers as "BANANERS" and "fuckin' NUTSO," which sounds accurate, especially when looking at the sales graph he included. We asked Fish if he's a fan of Steam sales, considering his game was half-off when it got those mad hits.
"Yeah I'm a fan!" he said. "Even I can't find a way to complain about it."
That's the most solid endorsement of the Steam Summer Sale we've ever heard - go check it out.

Xbox Live will phase out Microsoft Points rewards next month
John DruryNoooo....

As part of its plan to transition from Microsoft Points to real currency, Microsoft will phase out Points-based Xbox Live Rewards beginning Aug. 1, according to an email sent to Polygon this morning.
Currently, the Xbox Live Rewards loyalty program gives members Microsoft Points and other digital goods for completing tasks on Xbox Live, including making purchases through the Marketplace, renewingGold subscriptions, playing games and using other features. As Microsoft phases out Microsoft Points, they will no longer be offered as rewards, but the company states it has plans to replace them with something "even better."
"Since this currency change is impacting the structure of the program, we're taking the opportunity to make Xbox Live...
Sony's PS4 self-publishing principles: 'Every developer is a publisher'
John Drury'At'll do Sony...'at'll do.
"Every single individual developer is a publisher as far as we're concerned," said Simonetta of the first of the self-publishing pillars."We don't separate, we don't segregate indies from traditional publishers."
Simonetta explained self-publishing indies have control over their games' release dates on PS4, and can work with Sony on promotion through channels like the PlayStation Blog, Twitter and Facebook accounts. However, these opportunities aren't guaranteed. "It boils down to the objective quality of your title," Simonetta pointed out.
This relationship extends to an "open-door" policy at SCE Europe, where self-publishing PS4 indies are welcome to visit the company's London office to sit and talk face-to-face about their games. "For us, it's key that each and every one of the companies working on PlayStation can come and talk to us at any time they want or need," Simonetta said.

NHL 14 features offline 'NHL 94 Anniversary mode'
John DruryOh.My.God. NHL 94 was SO GOOD
In celebration of NHL 94's 20 year anniversary, EA Canada has announced that NHL 14 will include a mode that brings the classic gameplay of the SNES and Genesis original to the franchise's modern engine.
"It is the NHL 14 engine driving it all - driving the gameplay and presentation. That said, we've taken as many nods as we can from NHL 94," EA Sports Producer Sean Ramjagsingh tells Joystiq.
"From the moment you start loading into the game you're going to hear some of the retro NHL 94 music. You're going to hear organs throughout the game mode. You're going to see the retro star as a player indicator with their number and position. You're also going to see retro-style art on the rinks."
The single-game mode, which will only be available for offline play Ramjagsingh says, is built to be as "over-the-top" as the classic game. Helmets pop off players after bone-crunching hits, glass regularly breaks, and goalies can be hit. "After goals and penalties, you're going to see some interesting some retro nods to NHL 94 as well. It's all part of the visuals," he adds.
"All those fun elements back in the game with modern day players and a modern day look."

Mexico Replaces U.S. As The Most Obese Developed Nation In The World
John DruryI saw this yesterday. Wooo! This somehow makes me feel slightly better about my weight!
Slap yourself on the back with a salad fork and take a break from those crunches you’re probably totally doing right now, Americans. A new report says we’ve been knocked from our position as No. 1 most obese developed nation in the world. That non-honor now goes to Mexico, according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization.
At 32.8% of Mexican adults who are considered obese, that nation sits at the top of the list. Followed by the U.S. (we’re No. 2, we’re No. 2!) with 31.8% of people aged 20 and older with a body mass index of 30 and above, reports Yahoo! News.
Syria is next (31.6%) followed by Venezuela and Libya holding down a tie for fourth at 30.8%.
It’s a major problem for countries like Mexico, where health advocates say it’s the malnourished people who become obese. About 70,000 people a year die from diabetes in Mexico, “or roughly equal to the deaths authorities say are caused by more than six years of the country’s gangland wars,” the Global Post points out in discussing the problem in Mexico.
We’re not a country to rub it in the faces of our international brethren, however (right? Be nice) — especially since we’ve only dropped to the second slot from the top.

Dota 2 now out of beta, Valve adding new players in waves
John DruryIt's out! (kinda) Hurry up and give me my god damn mac client so I don't have to reboot into Windows every time I want to play.

Valve's multiplayer online battle arena game, Dota 2, is out of its extended beta and officially released, the company announced today. The free-to-play game is now available through Steam, with Valve adding new players over time "in a way that isn't frustrating" for Dota 2 players both old and new.
On the game's official website, Valve said it wants to "smooth out the traditional launch spike, but at the same time allow anyone to come in and try out Dota 2."
"Dota 2's user base is already larger than any game we've ever made, and it continues to grow," Valve said. "Knowing this launch moment was coming, we've spent the past year working on getting both the backend infrastructure and new user experience into a state where we can...

Bungie's unreleased Project Phoenix had a blocky 'Minecraft-like' renderer
John DruryGuys, we totally invented Minecraft.

An unreleased Bungie venture called Project Phoenix included "Minecraft-like" mechanics for building castles out of blocks, Bungie co-founder Jason Jones told IGN.
Project Phoenix was in development alongside Halo: Combat Evolved and was eventually overtaken by the first-person shooter and its sequel, Halo 2, he said.
"It was a game that was based on a technology that was sort of Minecraft-like, in that it could render ... You could build castles out of blocks, for example, and then knock them down," Jones said. "Ultimately the reason the game never saw the light of day was because of Halo. The [Project Phoenix] team got scavenged a number of times, both on Halo 1 and Halo 2, to finish Halo."
Jones said Project Phoenix was more...
