Why Oculus Rift needs an auto-pause feature for horror games

by Jessica Conditt
John Drury

ATTN: SHAWN

Think about it. You're playing Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs - or even worse, Outlast - with an Oculus Rift strapped to your face and headphones growling in your ears, roaming haunted halls in full, immersive 3D. You're peering around corners, waiting for the next monster to leap out of the shadows and attack. You clear a room, take a breath, and turn around - to see a vicious beast staring directly into your eyes. You'll rip those VR goggles off your face as quickly as possible, guaranteed.

This video from YouTube user Christopher Andersen is proof-of-concept for the above scenario, played out with Dreadhalls. It also offers a compelling argument for developers to include an "auto-pause" feature triggered by a sudden, jarring camera flip in Oculus Rift horror games. And maybe all of those "falling really quickly" games. And probably in games with sharks.

Jump to the 3 minute mark for those who like their scares fast.

EA is working on six to eight new franchises

by Emily Gera
John Drury

Oh EA... look at our new IPs*!

*not new IPs

Electronic Arts is branching out from its current collection of sequels by developing six to eight new franchises, EA Games chief Patrick Soderlund told MCV.

Soderland referenced Mirror's Edge 2 and Star Wars Battlefront as examples that the company is still willing to take risks on new material despite the strong focus maintaining successful franchises.

"We are working on a new Mirror's Edge game, and although that's not a new IP, it is a revival done in a new way. We are developing Star Wars Battlefront, which to us is a new IP, even though it isn't technically," he said.

"We have six to eight completely new IPs in the works. The day we stop making new IP is when we go onto life support. We need to incubate new ideas and push creative...

Nintendo reveals 2DS, a Wii U price drop and more

by Justin McElroy
John Drury

What the fucking fuck?

Nintendo is releasing a new version of its Nintendo 3DS hardware that's playable only in 2D. It's called the Nintendo 2DS and will be available in North America on Oct. 12 for $129.99.

Nintendo 2DS plays the entire library of 3DS and DS games only in 2D, Nintendo announced, dropping the stereoscopic 3D of the currently available Nintendo 3DS. The new handheld features a "fixed, slate-type form factor" — instead of a clam shell-style design — but retains the hardware features of the standard 3DS, including its dual screens and touch screen.

Players will be able to get their hands on the system this October, when Nintendo brings the system on tour to Simon Malls in North America.

Precursor isn't giving up on Shadow of the Eternals

by Xav de Matos
John Drury

For fucks sake how many does a studio need to be told that nobody wants their fucking games. After 3 failed crowd funding attempts, maybe it's time to go away?

In a post thanking backers, Shadow of the Eternals developer Precursor Games says it has not given up on the project after failing to meet its Kickstarter campaign goal.

"It is unfortunate that we were unable to crowd-fund this project at this time, but we have not given up. We intend to pursue other avenues with the ultimate goal of having our games come to fruition," reads the latest update on the Kickstarter page.

After closing its original crowdfunding effort to better describe its vision and restructure its funding goals, Precursor relaunched the campaign for Shadow of the Eternals on July 25. The developer's second attempt at funding ultimately fell well short of its $750,000 goal, inching just above the $320K mark before ending on August 23.

Billed as a spiritual successor to the GameCube-exclusive Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Shadow of the Eternals will continue its online presence with what the latest campaign update describes as upgraded forum software. The game's forums will remain open, the developer promises.

Meanwhile, Shadow of the Eternals is still up for votes on Steam Greenlight. Joystiq has contacted Precursor to find out whether it will be removed from Valve's platform for the time being.

Jerkwad Cat Simulator: Catlateral Damage

by Nathan Grayson

Yes, I knocked down that television. Do not question it, or I will knock down your entire home.

True fact: I was raised by cats. True fact the second: my first word was “meow.” I’m not joking about that, either. Point is, I very much get the cat mentality. I grew up around them, and I understand the tiny acts of terrorism they are capable of unleashing upon their small domestic worlds. And let’s face it: we, as humans, probably have it coming. I mean, how dare we ever leave the house or not be in a specific spot at an arbitrary time or not clean the litter box every 15 minutes or let the sun go down and ruin their sunbeam or pet them the wrong way or pet them the right way for too long? In these cases, the only answer is swift and frighteningly calculated retribution. Time for Catalateral Damage. Time to break some shit. Poor, oblivious humans. How else will they learn?

Rebellion teases true Evil Genius sequel in letter to fans, explains free-to-play plan

by Michael McWhertor
John Drury

BWAHAHA RUIN THEM ALL AS FREE TO PLAY MOBILE GAMES

In an open letter to fans of the Evil Genius franchise, Rebellion Developments explains its reasoning behind bringing Evil Genius Online to Facebook and Zynga and, while not explicitly saying so, hints at a full-fledged sequel for PC gamers.

When Rebellion announced Evil Genius Online earlier this month, reaction was mixed, and largely negative. Despite grousing about the platform and free-to-play plans for Evil Genius Online, Rebellion says in its open letter that Evil Genius players quickly snatched up beta test slots — and let their voices be heard. Rebellion responded to that feedback by offering some explanation about its Evil Genius plan.

"For independent studios like Rebellion to survive it's important that we look beyond the...

Magical Vending Machine Makes Fries For You In 90 Seconds

by Laura Northrup
John Drury

i want dis

zomgfriesWant a snack? Vending machines that cook various foods for you are existed for years, but outside of a grocery store in Brussels, there is a machine that cuts and cooks French fries for you in only 90 seconds. The fries cook in beef fat and vegetable oil, since Belgium is the land where French fries were invented and anything not cooked in beef fat is a waste of perfectly good potatoes.

Below, you can see a video of the inner workings of the machine. 125 grams of fries get transferred into an oil bath and cooked, then dumped into a cup. A tiny box is included with either ketchup or mayonnaise, and Tunisian hot sauce (harissa) is an option too. The machine even has air filters that keep the delicious frying smells from filtering outside of the machine…drawing in other shoppers to buy fries, too. Wouldn’t that be the best marketing for the product?

It’s probably not as good as the fries you’d get from a street vendor, but also is available 24 hours a day and cuts out pesky human interaction.

One serving will cost you €3.50, or about $4.67.

Dear Esther Dev’s Rapture No Longer Coming To PC

by Nathan Grayson
John Drury

Good riddance.

Hello, everyone. I come bearing some extremely depressing news. The rapture’s happening soon, but not to us. Hm, well jeez, when I phrase it that way, it doesn’t sound terrible at all. What I mean to say is, Dear Esther developer thechineseroom’s next non-Amnesia game, the super fascinating Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture, is no longer coming to PC – at all, for the foreseeable future. Sony’s nabbed it for its burgeoning army of indie exclusives, so I guess that means it’s not allowed to love us anymore. I reached out to thechineseroom’s Dan Pinchbeck, and he confirmed the bad news.

Google: Of Course We’re Going To See What’s In Emails Sent To Gmail Addresses, Don’t Be Silly

by Mary Beth Quirk

Raise your hand if you use Gmail. Now look around at your pals, who are ostensibly reading this with you and are perhaps one of 425 million Gmail users. Anyone sending email to those people apparently have no “reasonable expectation” that those communications are confidential, according to a court filing submitted by Google.

Advocacy group Consumer Watchdog is calling the filing a “stunning admission,” as noted by The Guardian. This, after Google and others in the industry have come under intense scrutiny in the blowback from the National Security Agency’s surveillance tactics.

“Google has finally admitted they don’t respect privacy,” said John Simpson, Consumer Watchdog’s privacy project director. “People should take them at their word; if you care about your email correspondents’ privacy, don’t use Gmail.”

The filing came about during an attempt by Google to dismiss a class action lawsuit that accuses it of breaking wire tap laws when scanning email sent from non-Google accounts, all with the aim of targeting ads to Gmail users.  Which is why when I get a shipping notification that my order of vintage Sweet Valley High novels is on its way, I get an ad from eBay displaying Sweet Valley High DVDs (the TV show was crap, eBay, but thanks).

According the suit, Google “unlawfully opens up, reads, and acquires the content of people’s private email messages.”

While Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt has been quoted as saying: “Google policy is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it,” the suit claims Google has waltzed right up to that creepy line and danced over it.

“Unbeknown to millions of people, on a daily basis and for years, Google has systematically and intentionally crossed the ‘creepy line’ to read private email messages containing information you don’t want anyone to know, and to acquire, collect, or mine valuable information from that mail.”

But Google claims the plaintiffs are trying to muck up everyday workings, and making “an attempt to criminalize ordinary business practices” that it’s been using since its debut. In addition, Google says “all users of email must necessarily expect that their emails will be subject to automated processing.”

According to Google: “Just as a sender of a letter to a business colleague cannot be surprised that the recipient’s assistant opens the letter, people who use web-based email today cannot be surprised if their communications are processed by the recipient’s ECS [electronic communications service] provider in the course of delivery.”

But when you send a letter through the post office, the mailman doesn’t open it up and read it, argue some critics of this position. Or at least, he’s not supposed to.

Google responded to this recent revelation with a statement saying: “We take our users’ privacy and security very seriously; recent reports claiming otherwise are simply untrue. We have built industry-leading security and privacy features into Gmail — and no matter who sends an email to a Gmail user, those protections apply.”

Virtuix Omni gaming treadmill now taking pre-orders

by David Hinkle
John Drury

ATTN: SHAWN

They say a nice rug really ties the room together, but surely a gigantic, costly treadmill dedicated to gaming would do just as well. If you're so inclined, the Virtuix Omni is now accepting pre-orders.

The Virtuix Omni is an omni-directional treadmill that, when combined with Oculus Rift, aims to offer the most immersive virtual reality gaming experience to date. $500 will snag you one treadmill with special belt, shoes and tracking hardware and software. The "Duel Deluxe" package for $1,020 will net you two treadmills and aforementioned accouterments, plus a third pair of the special shoes. Shipping costs (this thing is heavy) will be incurred when the Virtuix Omni is delivered in March 2014.

When the Virtuix Omni began its Kickstarter pledge drive, the device was only seeking $150,000 - that goal was exceeded in the first day alone. After 30 days, the Virtuix Omni was able to secure over $1.1 million in crowdfunding.

The New Old Reader

image

We’re pleased to announce that The Old Reader will officially remain open to the public! The application now has a bigger team, significantly more resources, and a new corporate entity in the United States. We’re incredibly excited to be a part of this great web application and would like to share some details about its future as well as thank you for remaining loyal users. We’re big fans and users of The Old Reader and look forward to helping it grow and improve for years to come.

First off we want to say that it’s rare to have an application that inspires as much passion as The Old Reader has as of late. We think that’s a sign of greatness and all credit for that goes to the wonderful team that has been running the show including Dmitry and Elena. We’ve gotten to know them pretty well this past week and they are smart, honest, and passionate people. We’re happy to announce that they are still a part of the team and we hope they will be for a long time to come.  The new team will be managing the project and adding to the engineering, communications, and system administration functions.

So now for the future. The Old Reader is going to retain all of its functionality and remain open to the public. Not only that, we’re going to do everything in our power to grow the user base which will only accentuate the things that make this application special. To facilitate these improvements, we’re going to be transitioning The Old Reader to a top tier hosting facility in the United States this coming week. It’s going to require some downtime and for that we sincerely apologize, but it’s also going to mean A LOT more servers, 10x faster networks, and long-term stability. We realize that doesn’t make the downtime easy but rest assured that things are looking up.

Over the coming weeks we’ll talk more about the new team of The Old Reader. We’re looking forward to introducing ourselves and making significant improvements to this incredible application. Thanks for reading and thanks for using The Old Reader!

Oculus Rift straps itself into the Strike Suit Zero cockpit

by David Hinkle
John Drury

SHAWN, TODAY IS THE DAY!

Strike Suit Zero Oculus Rift beta version released
After our time with EVE VR at E3, we can't even imagine playing a space combat game without an Oculus Rift. Thankfully, the developers behind space dogfighter Strike Suit Zero understand this and have released a beta version with a redesigned HUD and UI elements for the Oculus Rift VR headset.

You'll need access to an Oculus Rift dev kit and a copy of Strike Suit Zero to make this work, of course. The developer has also set aside a special area in its forums for feedback on the new beta version.

Strike Suit Zero launched back in January, a game whose chief mechanic is the Strike Suit - an advanced aircraft that can freely transform between space fighter and mech. Strike Suit Zero is currently available for $20 on Steam right now; a standalone score-based version called Strike Suit Infinity launched back in April for $7.
