This Optical Illusion Lets You See Your Own Brain Waves

The pinwheel-like drawing above is nothing but black and white lines. When you look at it the right way, though, something strange and beautiful happens: it begins to flicker. You may think it's just a regular old optical illusion at first, but actually, you're looking at your very own brain waves.

A Super-Accurate Gravity Map Shows You Where You Can Weigh Less

by Jamie Condliffe

A Super-Accurate Gravity Map Shows You Where You Can Weigh LessGravity's often assumed to be constant across the entire planet, but because the Earth varies in shape and density, that's not really the case. Now, this super-accurate gravity map reveals that the fluctuations are even more extreme than scientists previously thought.

WD-40 No-Mess Pen Draws on Lubrication

You don't always have WD-40 when you need it—unless you strap a can to your belt before heading out each day. Not all jobs require the power of the full spray. If you need to lubricate a squeaky hinge else, or anything else the stuff calls for, you can pick up this pocketable pen.

This DIY Bedbug Trap Is Cheap, Will Show Signs of an Infestation Early

by Alan Henry

This DIY Bedbug Trap Is Cheap, Will Show Signs of an Infestation Early

Most bedbug traps and tests can cost $50 or more, but this DIY trap is so simple and cheap that the researchers that came up with it want people to try it themselves. Ideally, it'll catch the earliest stages of an infestation, when the critters are easiest to eradicate. All you need is sugar, water, and yeast.

I’m really enjoying the visuals in this series of four idents for CCTV that translate human motion into digitally sculpted objects that look like steel, water, and wood. The clips were created by Taiwan design house JL Design and KORB. If you liked this also check out the photography of Shinichi Maruyama or Choros.

Tether Keeps Your Stemware from Flying Around in the Dishwasher

Some argue you shouldn't put your stemware in the dishwasher in the first place, partially for the reason that it won't always sit still. If your dishwasher causes broken wine glasses, Tether can solve the problem.

In an act of patience and precision that boggles the mind, Dutch artist Suzan Drummen creates sparkling floor installations using an array of individually placed mirrors, crystals, chromed metal, optical glass and precious stones. That’s right, the thousands of objects in each of her artworks are placed and stacked by hand and sit completely loose during the exhibition.

The fractal-like patterns in each installation form a sort of temporary 3D carpet that alters the space in which its installed by reflecting light in all directions. But even the slightest disturbance, an accidental step or dropped object, could send pieces from the unprotected installation flying, a true testament to the artist’s trust in the viewer. How Technology Has Innovated Loneliness

by Casey Chan

It's simple, as the world has gotten easier because technology has gotten better since touch screens have gotten touchier and social networks have filled every social void in our empty soul, we're still searching for substance. Too often social networks can result in the technological equivalent of empty calories—sure it feels good to get liked and sounds good to chat but it's not as genuine and fulfilling as real life.

Time can be a difficult variable to visually convey in still photography, both the length of time an exposure takes or a series of photos meant to depict the passage of time can be somewhat ambiguous without a written explanation. In his latest series, Time is a dimension, Singapore-based photographer Fong Qi Wei (previously) explores just that idea by shooting landscapes from a stationary position over a 2-4 hour period and then digitally slicing the images to create a layered collage. He shoots at sunset or sunrise to obtain a wide variation in light and then carefully cuts each image to reveal incremental timeframes. He explains:

The basic structure of a landscape is present in every piece. But each panel or concentric layer shows a different slice of time, which is related to the adjacent panel/layer. The transition from daytime to night is gradual and noticeable in every piece, but would not be something you expect to see in a still image.

Similarly, our experience of a scene is more than a snapshot. We often remember a sequence of events rather than a still frame full of details. In this series, I strive to capture both details and also a sequence of time in a single 2 dimensional canvas. I hope it gives you pause and reconsider what you experience versus what you shoot with your next camera phone.

You can see many more examples on his website, and read more about his process right here.

Eileen Brennan Has Died

by Michael K

eileenbrennanrip

The world deflates a little every time we lose someone from Clue. The Hollywood Reporter says that Eileen Brennan floated off to the little girl’s room in the sky on Sunday. Eileen’s publicist said that she died of bladder cancer at her home in Burbank. Eileen was 80.

Eileen Brennan (born name: Verla Eileen Regina Brennen) was in The Sting, Murder by Death, White Palace, The Last Picture and she got an Oscar nomination for playing the hot, not-the-one drill captain Doreen Lewis in Private Benjamin. Eileen played Captain Doreen Lewis again in the Private Benjamin TV show starring Lorna Patterson. The show only lasted a couple of seasons, but Eileen got an Emmy out of it.

But Eileen Brennan will always be Mrs. Peacock to me and when they remake Clue in heaven, she’ll get to slap the skin off of a trick for a change (and hopefully that trick’s Mr. Green).

Rest in peace, Mrs. Peacock.

The Invention of Jaywalking Was a Massive Shaming Campaign

by Matt Novak on Paleofuture, shared by Brian Barrett to Gizmodo

The Invention of Jaywalking Was a Massive Shaming Campaign

Before the invention of the car, jaywalking wasn't a recognized concept. Want to get across the street? Then just walk across the street—nobody's going to stop you. But the rise of the automobile posed a new problem for people of the early 20th century. While the median state-designated speed limit for American cities was just 10 miles per hour in 1906, the pace of American streets soon increased enough that people who wanted to cross them were suddenly putting themselves in harm's way. So cities across the U.S. started to regulate where and when pedestrians could cross. You can see the faint pedestrian crosswalk lines painted on the street in the scene below from Detroit circa 1917.
