UK artist and custom toy designer Bruce Whistlecraft (aka “Doktor A“) created Phineaus Grock, a robotic steampunk creation, for his A Postcard from New Yorkshire solo art show. It is currently on display until Sunday, November 11, 2012 at the Myplasticheart art gallery in New York.
One of the cleverest denizens of Retropolis. He and Mr. Head run the royal academy of science among other things. They work closely together to forward the knowledge and learning of all Mechtorians. Winding and stocking each other in a show of unity between the two different life forces within the realm. This display is looked upon disapprovingly by the religious leaders who take it as a direct snub by the scientific and philosophical members of society against their doctrines of segregation.

Peer rewards for good behavior take a bite out of trolling and griefing in MMO
Christopher LantzSpeaking of anti-trolling efforts in MMORPGs...
The Mary Sue's Becky Chambers rounds up the coverage and analysis of an anti-trolling/griefing experiment in League of Legends, a massively multiplayer online RPG battle arena. League's management hired a team of social scientists who designed a system of peer-rewards that allowed users to hand each other publicly visible points for positive, friendly interactions (there was already a system of reporting bad behavior and meting out punishments, but it wasn't working very well). Unlike previous attempts to use public reward to improve behavior, this one was not yet turned into a back-scratching system where friends just vote one another up, and has reportedly resulted in massive improvements in the quality of group interactions.
Ten days after Honor went live, an update from Dr. Lyte appeared on the official LoL blog, detailing the global changes they’d noticed in reported bad behavior:
Negative Attitude reports: -29% in normals and -11% in ranked
Offensive Language reports: -35% in normals and -20% in ranked
Verbal Abuse reports: -41% in normals -17% in rankedCheck that out. Ten days of a voluntary system that grants nothing more than a tiny perk for being amiable, and folks were already cleaning up their acts. Of course, these stats only show a decline of reported incidents, which, while encouraging, is could be different than how things look down in the trenches. As LoL is not part of my repertoire, I took to Twitter earlier this week to get the word on the street. Lo and behold, players are indeed noticing a difference.
I first got some feedback from a player named Paige, who cites LoL as her favorite game despite the “negativity and hostility” within the community. In her opinion, Honor is a welcome addition. “Players seem to be making more of an effort to be just generally friendly,” she wrote in an email, noting that she’s seen a slight improvement in cross-team chat. She also pointed out that this hasn’t prevented insults from flying when a match goes badly, but nonetheless, she’s glad for a way to give props for good behavior.

Flesh Love is Fresh Love: Vaccu-packed couples by Haruhiko ‘Hai’ Kawaguchi
Christopher LantzThis just freaks me out looking at it. As I've gotten older, I've become acutely aware of how claustrophobic I am.
This art project has been circulating on art blogs for a few months, but you may find it as intriguing as I did when I stumbled across it a few days ago. Flesh Love (aka Fresh Love) was conceived and midwifed by Japanese artist Haruhiko Kawaguchi (Hai).
Kawaguchi finds in-love couples of varying sexual orientations at parties and clubs in Tokyo and convinces them to come back to his studio where he photographs them in giant, airless and skin-tight see-through vacuum bags.
His gallery – with tons of these incredible photos – is here.
Once the couples are wearing what they choose – sometimes nothing – and positioned inside the bag, the air is removed and Kawaguchi has 15-20 seconds to photograph them. He told S Magazine, “Men are more likely to panic than women.” Kawaguchi says, “One man urinated in his pants with fear. Women are more concentrated on their looks.” Kawaguchi has photographed over 80 couples for the project.

I love this. And is it just the lighting or is this done in blue? I’m so used to seeing this type of stuff done in just blackwork. The blue is stunning.
Lana Wachowskis LGBT-Speech
Sie liefert mit der Rede einen der intelligentesten („The Pathology of a society that refuses to see acknowledge the spectrum of gender in the same blind way they refuse to see the spectrum of race and sexuality“) und bewegendsten („[My Mum] tells me to look at her but I don’t want to, because when I do I am unable to understand why she cannot see me“) Beiträge zum Thema seit „It gets better“… und einen der lustigsten („[My hairdresser's] seen the drunken pornographic pictures of our honeymoon in Mykonos“).
Ich empfehle, das komplette Ding anzusehen (Ab circa Minute 5) oder das Transkript zu lesen:
Invisibility is indivisible from visibility; for the transgender this is not simply a philosophical conundrum — it can be the difference between life and death.
A few short weeks ago after my coming out, the three of us, Tom, Andy and I were being interviewed, one of the reporters ventured away from the subject of the film towards my gender. Imagine that, a reporter. My brother quickly stepped in, “Look, just so we’re clear,” he says, “if somebody asks something or says something about my sister that I don’t like, understand that I will break a bottle over their head.” [applause] Few words express love clearer than these.
I am here because Mr. Henderson taught me that there are some things we do for ourselves, but there are some things we do for others. I am here because when I was young, I wanted very badly to be a writer, I wanted to be a filmmaker, but I couldn’t find anyone like me in the world and it felt like my dreams were foreclosed simply because my gender was less typical than others.
If I can be that person for someone else [pause, applause] then the sacrifice of my private civic life may have value.

Underwater Dogs, A Book of Dogs Fetching Things Underwater by Photographer Seth Casteel
Christopher LantzScary dog mouths.
Earlier this year we featured the work of pet photographer and animal rights activist Seth Casteel and his incredible shots of dogs fetching balls and other toys underwater. Now, Casteel has authored Underwater Dogs, a hardcover book of these (and new) photos, along with a 2013 calendar. The book is available to purchase at Amazon and the 2013 calendar is available to purchase at Willow Creek Press. Casteel was recently featured on ABC’s Good Morning America, Take a look at that segment which gives insight on Casteel’s process and the inspiration behind his work.
In more than eighty portraits by award-winning pet photographer and animal rights activist Seth Casteel capture new sides of our old friends with vibrant underwater photography that makes it impossible to look away. Each image bubbles with exuberance and life, a striking reminder that even in the most loveable and domesticated dog, there are more primal forces at work. In Underwater Dogs, Seth Casteel gives playful and energetic testament to the rough-and-tumble joy that our dogs bring into our lives.
Here’s a look at some of the fun photos featured in Underwater Dogs:

Voter Intimidation Billboards In Minority Neighborhoods
Christopher LantzThis is some serious bullshit.
Popping up in several Midwestern swing state cities, a prime example of harassment and intimidation of the public via advertising:
Billboards stating that “VOTER FRAUD IS A FELONY 3-1/2 YRs & $10,000 Fine” have been popping up in African American and Latino neighborhoods in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Cleveland, Ohio. These billboards are paid for by a “Private Family Foundation” whose actual identity has yet to be disclosed.

Goggled coat
Christopher LantzUm, yes! More of this please. I just want to show up at the bank, stand there, and breath loudly.
Luxury retailer Luisa Viaroma at one point sold these $424 Matt Nylon Hooded Down Jackets with integrated, goggled facemasks. In an apparent bid to soften the appearance of alien menace projected by the garment when fully zipped, the vendor added a silly poof-ball at the crown. This latter seems easily removed, and I speculate that it is similar to the little snap-off bit of wink-nudge metal that converts your semi-automatic to full-auto -- that is, a way to claim relative harmlessness at the point of sale. Because once you lose the bogglie-ball, brother, you're pure terror in this one.
