That's why we're loving this great Thrillist list that features most of the major cities in the US, each with their own link to the 50 best things to eat in that city. I can't vouch for all of their recommendations, but the ones listed for San Diego are pretty dead on. Don't Freak Out Over This Supercut of Horror Movie Jump Scares

by Bryan Menegus on Sploid, shared by Adam Clark Estes to io9

Jump scares are a staple—and one of the most divisive elements—of modern horror movies. Some people are too susceptible to them, while others find them gimmicky. To people in the former camp: does the above gif scare you in any way? The answer is almost certainly no.

ZeroLemon's SolarJuice batteries offer the promise of recharging away from an outlet. Leave the pack out in the sun and watch light turn into energy that powers your phone. In reality, you have to leave it out for a day or so to get any juice that way, and you will probably still end up sticking it in the wall.

No matter. It's remains a great pack. And now it's one you can get for a mere fraction of its usual price.

Apple May Block iPhone Use at Concerts, Could Movie Theaters Be Next?

by Peter Sciretta

blocking phones in the movie theaters

Apple has patented a new technology that blocks the iPhone’s camera feature, which would reportedly allow venues like concert venues to use an infrared beam to disable a mobile phone’s camera, preventing its users from taking videos and photos.  According to the Telegraph, Apple’s patent says that the phone would display a “recording disabled” message when users take photographs or videos. Apple has not officially announced this feature so it’s unclear if and when it will roll out.

But who’s to say that movie theaters wouldn’t also be able to take advantage of this new technology when it’s released? And maybe this is just a first step towards something I theorized about five years ago.

blocking phones in the movie theaters

If they were to release the patented tech, I’m sure multiplexes would also be allowed to install this system to prevent moviegoers from taking photos and videos of the film. Not that any of the big movie pirates are shooting with an iPhone, but I’ve heard movie studios have recently been running into rampant illegal streaming of films on services like Periscope and Facebook Live. This kind of system would cut down on that sort of thing.

In June 2011, I wrote a post titled What If Your Cellphone Wouldn’t Allow You to Use It During a Movie Screening?. In the post, I proposed the idea that Apple should build a system which would not allow people to pick up a phone call or respond to a text message while inside a movie theater.

The phone would be in lock mode while in the theater, from the time the trailers start until the end credits hit. And better yet, the technology would put all iPhones on minimum brightness, which would be less of a disturbance. So even if someone turns on their phone to check the time, it will not distract as many people from the film. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that some people need the ability to receive urgent calls/txts — doctors, parents…etc. I’m not saying that the ability to check one’s phone should be completely disabled — for example, you would still be able to see someone is calling, just not able to pick up or return the call until he leaves the theater. You would be able to read the txt message, just not be able to respond.

The response to that idea was very mixed. Turns out people don’t want private companies to have control of their technology, even if they aren’t the rude one texting and looking at Facebook during Independence Day: Resurgence. Also blocking phones in the movie theaters in this manner would probably be illegal, as there are probably FCC laws that would prevent a company like Apple from releasing a system like that.

Even in Los Angeles at premium theaters like the Arclight, I routinely see people on their phones during a movie. I would love it if, at very least, a system like this would prevent people from having their brightness on high during a film. Not that the low light isn’t distracting, but its far less distracting than someone who has their brightness on high.

Infographic: The Year Robert De Niro Stopped Caring About His Career

by Ethan Anderton

Robert De Niro Stopped Caring

It’s no secret that in this latter phase of his career, Robert De Niro has made some pretty poor decisions regarding the movies he chooses to make. Dirty Grandpa, New Year’s Eve, Meet the Parents sequels, and Shark Tale are just some of the awful movies De Niro has made that aren’t worthy of the actor’s talents. So what’s the deal? Well, after analyzing the films that the Oscar-winning actor has made throughout his long career on film, a Reddit user seems to have determined the exact year that Robert De Niro stopped caring.

Here’s a look at the bad movies Robert De Niro has made, illustrating when the actor stopped caring (via Reddit):

robertdenio-stoppedcaring-chart

The post which contained the above chart said that 2002 was the year that Robert De Niro stopped caring. However, in the comments it has been determined that it was more likely 1998 that De Niro gave up. The chart inaccurately shows some movies with a score above 50% are Certified Fresh, but only movies at 60% and above are fresh.

That means it was actually after Jackie Brown or even Ronin (which would have been made before 1998) was the last movie that De Niro truly cared about. That would make sense since The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle would arrive in 2000, having been made the year before in 1999.

Of course, this is just a generalization of De Niro’s career. There has been some great work that De Niro has turned in since the estimate of when he stopped caring. Silver Linings Playbook had a great turn from De Niro, and even though The Intern seems like one of those movies that wouldn’t be worthy of De Niro’s talents, it’s actually a charming, well-done movie.

On a related note, just at a quick glance, around the same time De Niro stopped caring about his career appears to be the same time Al Pacino also took a turn for the worse. Maybe they have some kind of pact or competition going on.

Wright Congratulates First-Time All Stars Syndergaard and Familia With Special Gift

by MMO News Desk

Mets third baseman David Wright got into the spirit on Saturday and surprised first-time All Stars Noah Syndergaard and Jeurys Familia with a special gift in their lockers to recognize them for their solid first half performances.

Newsday reports that the Mets captain gifted a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label to each of his teammates with a handwritten congratulatory note encouraging them to enjoy the experience.

“I love it,” said Familia whose note was even written in Spanish. “I’m going to leave it there like that forever in my house.”

A classy act by the seven-time All Star who has been with the team throughout this homestand to show his support and provide some inspiration.

Yoenis Cespedes (second) and Bartolo Colon (fourth) were also selected to the 2016 All-Star Game. Unfortunately though, both Syndergaard (arm fatigue) and Cespedes (strained quad) will not participate due to injuries.MMO-footer

HBO’s Vice Principals Plans A Two-Season Term

by Erik Amaya
Corey

I like it. I like when there is a set plan for a story. That way you don't get those bullshit filler episodes. I am looking at you Lost and Sopranos.

HBO‘s upcoming Danny McBride comedy Vice Principals will finish its run after two seasons.

Variety reports that McBride revealed plans to make the series last eighteen episodes while speaking at a premiere event for the program. Initially conceived of as a feature with co-writer and director Jody Hill, McBride expanded the premise to eighteen hours.

According to Hill, no one on the creative team has any interest making more episodes beyond the eighteen originally conceived.

McBride stars as an ambitious vice principal at a high school. His initial efforts to succeed the outgoing principal — played by Bill Murray — are stymied by a rival in the form of The Shield‘s Walton Goggins. But both are passed over for the job and must face a common foe in the form of the new principal.

Tremors Meets Jaws In Film-Turned-Graphic Novel Sharkasaurus

by Rich Johnston

cover small

By Andrew Guilbert

Tyler Jenkins, the illustrator known for his work on Image Comics’ Peter Panzerfaust and the Eisner-award nominated anthology In The Dark and Spencer Estabrooks, the award winning filmmaker behind the-office-meets-D&D series One Hit Die have just launched a Kickstarter to turn the cult film Sharkasaurus into a graphic novel.

Sharkasaurus page 1 colour desaturated

Set on a creationist-themed golf course, Sharkasaurus is the story of a rebellious paleontologist’s son, who falls for the promiscuous daughter of a widowed creationist. When they accidentally awaken the prehistoric tunneling dino-shark Sharkasaurus, the pair must evolve their ideological differences or succumb to the inevitable jaws of the beast.

With ample amounts of gore, gut-busters and nods to film monster royalty like Tremors and Jaws, Sharkasaurus promises to be a bloody hilarious read.

“We had such a good time on the short film, but I’ve got bigger ideas for the story and where things can go,” says Sharkasaurus creator Spencer Estabrooks. “We mock creationist and paleontologist equally. Everything in this graphic novel is there to be roasted, and promptly devoured.”

the sharkasaurues technical drawing

“Sharkasaurus is just so over the top that, when I read it, I knew I had to be a part of it,” says illustrator Tyler Jenkins. “Where else can you find a monster chasing fundamentalists and scientists with the baby Jesus riding its fin?”

Rewards include limited edition, numbered and signed copies, your name included in the comic as a brand name, original artwork and even having your likeness get murdered by Sharkasaurus in the final product.

You can help bring Sharkasaurus to life on Kickstarter here and check out the short film that started it all here.

EXCLUSIVE BLEEDING COOL CONTEST:

Anyone who contributes $25 or more can message the promo code BLEEDINGCOOL to the creator through Kickstarter, along with their funniest one-liner, for a chance write a one-liner that will be included in the graphic novel.

Marc Summers Returns to Host ‘Double Dare’ at Comic-Con, and You’ll Be Able to Watch

by Ethan Anderton

Double Dare at Comic-Con

Children of the late ’80s and early ’90s are undoubtedly familiar with the Nickelodeon family game show Double Dare. Airing from 1986 to 1993, the show followed two-member teams of kids answering trivia questions and competing in messy physical challenges, culminating in the famous obstacle course at the very end. And in honor of Double Dare‘s 30th anniversary, the show is coming back in July.

Nickelodeon has announced that Double Dare is coming to San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 22 for a special live edition of the show, and original host Marc Summers will be back as host. Find out more about Double Dare at Comic-Con after the jump.

The official 30th anniversary of Double Dare won’t happen until October 6, but Nickelodeon is ready to celebrate early by streaming this live edition of the show straight from San Diego by way of Facebook Live on The Splat’s Facebook page. Starting at 9:30pm Pacific time on July 22, fans will be able to watch the whole game play out.

The physical challenges being revived include the Wringer, Down the Hatch, the Human Hamster Wheel and the Double Dare Nose. If you need a reminder of what some of these challenges were like, check out this video:

For those lucky enough to be in attendance at Comic-Con, you’ll have a chance to meet Marc Summers at a signing event at Nickelodeon’s booth #4113 on the convention floor. There you’ll also be able to take pictures with the Double Dare nose.

The week after Comic-Con, there will be a whole Double Dare Week on The Splat (the programming block on TeenNick) beginning on Monday, July 25 at 10pm ET/PT. Marc Summers will be appearing during that special programming revival where Double Dare interstitials will air along with memorable moments from the original show, including Family Double Dare and Double Dare 2000.

This is all part of Nickelodeon’s big push of nostalgia from the ’80s and ’90s that started with The Splat last year. In addition to Double Dare coming to Comic-Con, there’s that Legends of the Hidden Temple movie in the works, as well as a Hey Arnold! movie too. Plus, there’s supposed to be some kind of NickToons movie on the way as well. Nostalgia is definitely king at Nickelodeon right now, and fans seem eager to eat it up.

If you’re looking for some nostalgic reading material, head over to Thrillist for an oral history of Double Dare on Nickelodeon and learn some things about the game show you may not have known.

Winter Is Going to Be a Little Bit Late: ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 May Be Delayed

by Angie Han
Corey

Cmooooooooooon

The Winds of Winter

For six seasons, the Starks have been warning us: “winter is coming.” In the Game of Thrones season 6 finale, winter finally, officially arrived. That’s bad news for the people of Westeros, because their winters last for years and also because there are a bunch of ice zombies eager to take over the continent. But it turns out the arrival of winter is not so great for us here in the real world, either.

Although HBO has yet to announce an official premiere date for Game of Thrones season 7, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have revealed that the production schedule is getting delayed so they can actually shoot in cold and gloomy weather. And since Game of Thrones season 7 is starting late, it’ll probably premiere late as well.

For the past six years, Game of Thrones has premiered around the same time each spring. The earliest the show has ever premiered is March 31 (season 3) and the latest is April 24 (season 6). However, during an appearance on the UFC Unfiltered podcast (via HitFix), Benioff and Weiss warned that the Game of Thrones season 7 probably would not return in April 2017:

We don’t have an air date yet, but this year will probably be a bit later. We’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, winter is here. And that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more. So we’ve kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.

Benioff and Weiss didn’t say exactly how much later than usual Game of Thrones season 7 would begin production. But to put things in perspective, Game of Thrones season 6 began shooting around July 2015 and wrapped up around December.

And when Game of Thrones does finally return, we can expect a little less of it than usual. Benioff and Weiss have said only about 13-15 episodes are left in the entire series, and the plan right now seems to be to split those remaining installments into two shorter seasons. Which means season 7 will probably only have 6-8 episodes, rather than 10 episodes like all the seasons that have come before it.

It’s disappointing news, but think of it this way: book fans have been waiting to see how this thing ends since 1996. Compared to that, a few extra weeks or months is nothing.

The Skrulls Could Appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

by Peter Sciretta

The Skrulls rights

Before they rolled the dice and went it on their own with Jon Favreau‘s Iron Man, Marvel made some crappy deals with other movie studios which to this day prevent a large chunk of their characters from appearing in the now Disney-produced Marvel Cinematic Universe. The most obvious are Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Deadpool, and Spider-Man (Marvel famously made a deal with Sony to produce Spider-Man: Homecoming, allowing Peter Parker to be part of the MCU).

But those rights also include many of the characters from those comic books. The whole thing is very complex, and ownership usually is determined by which comic book series the character first appeared in. For many years we believed the Skrulls rights to be locked up by 20th Century Fox, but apparently Marvel still owns the rights to some of the Skrulls.

Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn recently appeared on the Pointless Podcast (via io9) and talked briefly about the legal ownership of some Marvel characters. In the interview, Gunn clarified a long-standing misconception: Marvel could use the Skulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — they just can’t use all of them:

Marvel only partially owns Skrulls, and also for the record, we don’t own the Badoon either. So people were asking why we have the Sakaarans in the film, we don’t own the Badoon.

Gunn originally had the Badoon in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. You can even see concept art created for the film featuring the Badoon. But Marvel determined that 20th Century Fox owned the rights to those characters and the Badoon soldiers who were replaced in the film by the Sakaarans. Gunn further clarified on Twitter after being asked by fans:

This means that while some specific Skrulls are owned by 20th Century Fox, Marvel is able to use the Skrulls in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe movie if they see fit. Over 100 different Skrull characters have appeared in the comics and animated series, and while it might be too complicated to sort out here which ones belong to Fox through the X-Men and Fantastic Four universes, it seems like Marvel would have enough characters left over to include in a film if they chose to.

ZZ635BE59F

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the race of extraterrestrial shapeshifters first appeared in Fantastic Four #2 published in January 1962. They have featured in many stories over the last half century, usually trying to invade Earth. They notably have been engaged in a prolonged war with the extraterrestrial Kree, who appeared as the main villains of Guardians of the Galaxy.

It’s obvious why the comics have often returned to the Skrulls over the years. They can change their appearance to resemble anything or anyone, which allows for some dramatic reveals. And now that we know they could be used in the MCU, you’d better be questioning the motives of every character on screen, because they could secretly be a Skrull in disguise. Or even the dramatic death of one of your favorite characters? Might just be a Skrull. It’s happened a lot of times in the comics, giving Marvel an out for some pretty incredible cliffhangers. Hopefully they aren’t employed in that way in the movies.

ZZ11ECB027

As for the ownership of the other Marvel characters, I present the over-simplified graphic created by The Geek Twins. Here is a way more extensive, but not complete, listing of character ownerships:

MoviePass Will Finally Offer Unlimited Movies With No 3D/IMAX Restrictions, But It Will Cost You

by Peter Sciretta

MoviePass Statistics

MoviePass is a great idea, a monthly membership (starting at $30) that gives you access to see up to one movie a day in one of its 33,000 qualifying screens nationwide. It has basically been marketed as Netflix for movie theaters, and if it worked that simply it would be amazing. Unfortunately, I have found there are many sticking points in using this service. And it seems like MoviePass is finally trying to address some of them.

Right now that $30-$40 membership lets you see one traditional 2D movie once every 24 hours. If you want to see an IMAX or 3D film, MoviePass currently only allows that at select AMC theaters in Boston and Denver. MoviePass otherwise does not include IMAX, 3D, Fathom Events, ETX/RPX, D-Box, Luxury, Prime or any other screening with a premium ticket price.

But MoviePass now plans to experiment with plans as low as $20 a month for access to a smaller collection of movies, as well as a $100 unlimited film pass which would allow you to see all the movies you want in 2D, 3D and IMAX formats. This week, MoviePass will start introducing new services. Users in Los Angeles were told of a new $50 plan which would include six 2D or 3D movies, essentially weeding out all the people who use the membership to their advantage. MoviePass will also be introducing a $99 package for unlimited movies in any format.

The $100 all access pass sounds like a good idea, but it’s very expensive. In Los Angeles it would take about five 3D or IMAX movies to break even on that membership fee, and in smaller markets with lower ticket prices it would take more than that.

As for the $50 membership, it seems to be complicating things by introducing more limits. This is not the right approach for this company. I think what had always appealed to customers was the unlimited aspect, and the limits and restrictions are what turned people like me off of the service.

What limits? Not every theater accepts MoviePass, so selecting a screening can be limited to a few theaters in your area. Not being able to purchase IMAX or 3D tickets is also limiting. Many users hate the 24 hour time limit which means if they see a midnight movie on Friday night they can’t see a new movie on Saturday.

But for me the big sticking point is that in my city of Los Angeles, reserved seating is king. Most theaters in this city sell their good seats early, and having to go to the theater to get a ticket (usually right before or a couple hours before a movie starts) with your MoviePass card can restrict you to bad seats. It also means that you probably won’t be sitting with your friends, which is no fun. MoviePass needs to somehow introduce the ability to purchase tickets online in advance of a screening. Again, I realize this is probably more of a problem for people in major cities like me, but this service seems like something many metropolitan film geeks would subscribe to if it had less restrictions.

While traveling abroad, I’ve noticed that some movie theaters in the UK already have membership plans like MoviePass. These memberships probably work because they are run by the cinemas themselves instead of an external company that pays for each ticket that their members reserve. I think if a company like AMC were to introduce an unlimited movie program, allowing members to see a movie a day in any of its screens (including 3D and IMAX) that could really take off in a way that MoviePass has not.

Someone has finally combined livestock auctioneers and hip-hop beats

A really good livestock auctioneer’s patter can, after a while, start to feel almost musical. Specifically, a little rap-like. (Seriously, listen to an old Twista record, then go to a cattle auction and see if you can tell the difference.)The folks behind the excellent Vine account Auctioneer Beats decided to see how far they could push this similarity, and put beats by artists like Schoolboy Q and J. Cole behind clips from auctioneer competitions.

Book to Look for: Hillbilly #1

by Comicbookscalping

After a fairly lengthy absence from the publication scene and after bringing his Goon monthly series to Dark Horse Comics, Eric Powell has relaunched his creator-owned Comic publishing imprint, Albatross Funnybooks. A company that has been very quiet since the publishing of Chimichanga in early 2010.

Last week, Under the Albatross Funnybooks label, Powell released the first issue of what he describes of the publishers new “flagship” book – Hillbilly #1. It appears as if Powell has moved on from the Goon title in the comic medium and is focusing on the development of the Goon film, which makes Hillbilly the new character you’ll be seeing Powell write and draw. With two more issues already solicited in diamond and a proposed 12 issues first arc, Hillbilly #1 could have some legs long term.

Hillbilly #1 is currently selling for a few dollars above cover and is trending upwards with one or two sales hitting the $10 mark. Hillbilly #1 has great speculation potential for both the quick flip and the long term hold.

UPDATE FROM MY LAST POST: EB Games Corporate has told all stores to stop selling the Deadpool Cowboy Funkos until July 12. So if you have any, sell them now, because this is a sign that larger quantities are soon to be released both through EB Games and Gamestop (USA).

Happy Speculating

Cespedes Blasts 466 Foot Bomb Into Citi’s Upper Deck

by Joe D

yoenis cespedes 2

“He made a meal out of it!”

That famous quote from the classic baseball film “The Natural” was the first thing that came to mind when I watched Yoenis Cespedes crush a solo homer into the third deck of the stands at Citi Field during Thursday’s 4-3 win against the Chicago Cubs.

Ironically, Cespedes declined an invitation to participate in the upcoming Home Run Derby competition in San Diego, but I’m certain that few if any baseballs will measure up to the titanic 466-foot homer we witnessed llast night in the bottom of the sixth inning.

It was Cespedes’ 19th home run of the season and his 36th in 129 games as a Met. As usual, Cespedes was not one for gloating and instead only hoped that Thursday’s offensive performance was the beginning of better days to come for the Mets.

“We’re obviously going through a bit of a slump as a team right now,” Cespedes said. “But that doesn’t mean that we’re not always going to go out there and give the best that we can. Things haven’t been working out for us, but we’re always going to go out there and give it everything we’ve got.”

Cespedes has won the home run derby on two occasions but felt it wouldn’t be wise to participate while he deals with a strained wrist that required a cortisone shot last week.

In case you missed it, here it is for you watch with mouths wide open…. It is the only home run ever hit into the third deck at Citi Field.
