The Most Cringeworthy Liquid Nitrogen Destruction Video You'll Ever See

by Andrew Liszewski on Sploid, shared by Cheryl Eddy to io9

We’ve seen everything from Jell-O to raw eggs get completely destroyed after being frozen with liquid nitrogen. But nothing comes close to being as cringeworthy to watch as Brent Rose taking a baseball bat to a 15-inch silicone dildo turned into a frozen rock. Despite some interesting science at work here, some of you might want to look away.

A Snake Got Trapped Inside an Endless Circle of Its Own Shedding Skin

by Casey Chan on Sploid, shared by Cheryl Eddy to io9
A Snake Got Trapped Inside an Endless Circle of Its Own Shedding Skin

Poor snake. This slithery Stimson’s Python somehow managed to shed its skin completely within itself. The tail, oddly enough, finished shedding inside the mouth of the snake, forming a perfect circle that unfortunately trapped the snake inside of its old skin. According to the Alice Springs Reptile Centre in Australia, the non-venomous snake was just going around and around inside its own skin for over three hours before it was able to find a way out.

James Franco And Bryan Cranston Face Off In Red Band Trailer For Why Him?

by Erik Amaya

In Why Him?, Bryan Cranston plays a father who is less than thrilled when he discovers his daughter’s boyfriend is an internet billionaire with a giant house, plenty of tattoos and no filter. Oh, and he’s played by James Franco. Franco’s character does seem to genuinely be in love. And when he reveals his intentions to marry Cranston’s daughter, he starts a charm offensive to win over the entire family. But as seen in this NSFW red band trailer, it goes about as well as you’d think.

Exactly how bad is Fall Out Boy's new 'Ghostbusters' theme song?

by Randall Roberts
Corey

It is fucking bad.

Oh, it’s bad. Hauntingly bad.

So ghastly is Fall Out Boy’s new theme to “Ghostbusters” that if, after first listen, you vaporized it, pumped it into a tank, locked it in a safe and buried it under the Empire State Building, “Ghostbusters (I’m Not Afraid)” would still flatulently seep to the surface to...

Game Of Thrones Season Seven Directors Announced While Jon’s Parentage Is Clarified

by Erik Amaya
Corey

Great Chart.

gots6e10Though season six of HBO‘s Game of Thrones has ended, the discussion around its climatic moments continue on. Even news of the production realities behind the show’s next season has become as much a hot item as anything Lyanna Stark said to Ned at the Tower of Joy.

And HBO seems to be happy to stoke the flames.

As Entertainment Weekly reports, the network has already announced several names sitting the director’s chair when season seven begins production. Most are veterans of the show — Alan Taylor, Mark Mylod and Jeremy Podeswa — with one newcomer: Matt Shankman of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Fargo. But as EW points out, the network has yet to confirm the season will be shorter, as seems to be the wish of executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Meanwhile, it seems the show’s official Making Game of Thrones blog has clarified just who fathered Jon Snow. As spotted by The Nerdist, this helpful infographic indicates Rhaegar Targaryen is, or was, Jon’s father.

gottargargyenAnd for “A + J = T” truthers out there, it is interesting that the Mad King Aerys’s confirmed children are listed on the graphic but his possible bastard is nowhere to be seen. Although, that could just as easily have something to do with the graphic’s focus on players from Robert’s Rebellion.

As The Nerdist points out, Rhaegar’s name is never actually spoken in the season six finale flashback to the tower and the blog maybe spoiling the confirmation ahead of the series. But sharp-eyed watchers can suss it out as easily as book readers did years ago.

But it still leaves one intriguing question: Will Jon ever be privy to this information?

Preacher Gets A Second Season On AMC

by Erik Amaya

preachers1e3Time to get the show on the road.

AMC has announced that Preacher, based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steven Dillon, will return next year for a thirteen-episode second season.

Preacher is a special television program and we’re eager to share with fans the rest of this wild first season and, now, an expanded second season,” said AMC president Charlie Collier in a statement. “We look forward to more time with these unforgettable characters be it in Heaven, Hell, Texas or beyond.”

And certainly some fans hope the second season will bring with it a departure from Annville, its current central location. Executive producer Seth Rogen previously likened the first season to a sort of prequel for the series, establishing Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy. It is hoped from those earlier comments that the show will get closer to its road trip roots as the Annville setting is starting to make some viewers anxious, including our own dedicated Preacher watcher Rob Bradfield.

To celebrate the renewal, AMC will rebroadcast the first five episodes in a marathon starting this Thursday at 9pm. The sixth episode will air on its regular date and time this comming Sunday.

Newswire: Nick Kroll and John Mulaney are putting too much tuna on Broadway

by Esther Zuckerman
Corey

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssss

Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre will soon reek of tuna. That’s because John Mulaney and Nick Kroll’s prankster alter egos George St. Geegland and Gil Faizon will set up shop there starting this fall for Oh, Hello on Broadway. This is a huge move for these Upper West Side denizens who have already had an acclaimed off-Broadway run in New York and a tour.

George and Gil made the announcement in a Facebook Live video last night, insisting repeatedly, “this is not a joke.” Kroll’s already told the New York Times that, for Broadway, George and Gil’s “main request is showgirls.” He added, “And we haven’t quite figured out how to tell them that the union has made it clear that they will not provide any showgirls for a George and Gil production.” But, showgirls or none, there will of course be tuna. “There are whole ...

Coming Distractions: A new teaser for Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down hits the streets

by Dennis DiClaudio

While we got a much more extensive look at all the many moods to be expected in The Get Down when Netflix released a three-minute trailer back in January, this brand new teaser has its own merit. At just 30 seconds long, it doesn’t offer much in the way of exposition or characterization. But god damn if this tight package of imagery and music from the upcoming Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!) series doesn’t have feeling. The earlier preview did a good job of letting us know what we can expect from the period drama, set in New York City’s burgeoning hip-hop scene circa the summer of 1977. This one, though, seems intended as a quick shot of adrenaline that will make viewers want to shove the show into their eye holes.

A New Service Will Text ‘Game of Thrones’ Spoilers to Your Enemies

by Angie Han
Corey

Hah!

game of thrones season 6 questions header

Avoiding Game of Thrones spoilers can be a challenge as difficult and unwinnable as the game of thrones itself. If Twitter doesn’t ruin it for you, the headlines the next morning will. If you somehow manage to stay pristine through all that, you’ll probably overhear someone discussing it in the Starbucks line. Or at the office water cooler. Or on the subway. And now, it’s about to get even harder to know nothing.

A new service called Spoiled promises to anonymously text Game of Thrones spoilers to your enemies right after an episode airs. Actually, the company says it’ll send them to “your unsuspecting friends” — but let’s be real, if you hate your victim enough to ruin their favorite show for them, they are probably your friend.

Spoiled describes its services very simply:

For just $0.99 USD, Spoiled will anonymously and ruthlessly text spoilers to your unsuspecting friends after each new episode airs. Afterwards, sit back, relax, and follow Spoiled on Twitter to see how your friends react.

Since the service sends the spoilers anonymously, your “friends” will be none the wiser to your nefarious ways. But that also means you won’t be able to bask in their anguish, since they won’t know you were the one to stab them in the back. So the @spoiled_io Twitter account will post victims’ reactions for all to enjoy. The creators say they were inspired by this apocryphal tale of a woman who got revenge on a cheating ex by sending him Game of Thrones spoilers. We can’t vouch for how well the service works, since we haven’t tried it ourselves, but at $0.99 it’s easy enough to try it for yourself.

Spoiled promises the texts will last “for the rest of the season,” but in the case of Game of Thrones, that’s only one more episode. Once the current season of Game of Thrones has ended, Business Insider reports, Spoiled will open up a poll to see which show they should spoil next. If you’re a TV fanatic with a tendency to piss people off, now might be a good time to change your number.

It’s not a nice thing to do to someone, particularly since Game of Thrones is one of those shows where the mere whiff of a potential spoiler can get fans huffing with panicked outrage. But as far as elaborate revenge schemes go, it’s a lot kinder and a lot easier than, say, inviting people over for dinner so you can kill them all. Or pushing them out a Moon Door. Or burning them alive with your pet dragon. Or stabbing them or hanging them or beheading them. Really, I bet any of the characters in Game of Thrones would be thrilled if a few spoilers were the worst things their nemeses wanted to spring on them.

After 30 Years of Waiting, ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Soundtrack Will Finally Be Released

by Jack Giroux

Ferris Bueller

Most diehard John Hughes probably know the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off soundtrack was never officially made available to the public, which is surprising for a Hughes film. At the time of the classic comedy’s theatrical release, the writer/director believed the song choices wouldn’t have made for a popular soundtrack, so he refused to release one.

If you were on Hughes’ fan mailing list in the 1980s, then you might have gotten a single with a couple of the songs. But the rest of us have been out of luck until now. 30 years after Ferris Bueller’s Day Off first hit theaters, its soundtrack is now officially coming out.

Salon has learned Paramount and La-La Land Records have made a deal to release the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off soundtrack. The track list isn’t completely locked down yet, but it’s confirmed La-La Land Records will release the soundtrack later this year, possibly in September. The liner notes will feature interviews with the director’s son, James Hughes, music supervisor Tarquin Gotch, composer Ira Newborn, and editor Paul Hirsch. Journalist Tim Greiving conducted the interviews.

The music used in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off includes Yellow’s “Oh Yeah,” The English Beat’s “March of the Swivel Heads,” Dream Academy’s “The Edge of Forever,” and, unforgettably, The Beatles’ “Twist and Shout.”

Hughes once explained to Lollipop Magazine his reasoning for not wanting to release a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off soundtrack (via Nerdist):

The only official soundtrack that Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ever had was for the mailing list. A&M was very angry with me over that; they begged me to put one out, but I thought “who’d want all of these songs?” I mean, would kids want “Dankeschöen” and “Oh Yeah” on the same record? They probably already had “Twist and Shout,” or their parents did, and to put all of those together with the more contemporary stuff, like the (English) Beat – I just didn’t think anybody would like it. But I did put together a seven-inch of the two songs I owned the rights to – “Big City” on one side, and… I forget, one of the other English bands on the soundtrack… and sent that to the mailing list. By ’86, ’87, it was costing us $30 a piece to mail out 100,000 packages. But it was a labor of love. I cared about my audience and I cared about these movies.

That’s just a lovely (and unsurprising) quote at the end from John Hughes. Soundtracks for the director’s other films, including The Breakfast Club and Weird Science, were quite popular, so it’s easy to imagine at the time some were frustrated with Hughes’ decision, but his thinking behind not putting out a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off soundtrack was reasonable.

Check That: ‘Vinyl’ Canceled By HBO After One Season

It was decent. Not heartbroken though.

HBO's Vinyl

Back in February came word that HBO had decided to give Vinyl, the '70s music business drama from Terence Winter, Mick Jagger, Rich Cohen, and Martin Scorsese, a season two. This is something HBO does often to give shows a fair chance to find their audience.

But some things have happened since the decision was made to greenlight a second season, and now HBO has announced that they have decided not to move forward with a new season of Vinyl after all. [...]
