A Video Essay Exploring Japanese Director and Animator Satoshi Kon’s Unique Style of Editing

by Rollin Bishop
Pete Mecum

A very well done video essay.
I've only seen two of Satoshi Kon, "Millennium Actress" and "Paprika", but I did notice this unique style and it makes me want to examine other films that were influenced by him.

Creator and editor Tony Zhou explores the unique editing style of Japanese director and animator Satoshi Kon in a recent video essay. Kon is best known for the animated films Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika.

Four years after his passing, we still haven’t quite caught up to Satoshi Kon, one of the great visionaries of modern film. In just four features and one TV series, he developed a unique style of editing that distorted and warped space and time. Join me in honoring the greatest Japanese animator not named Miyazaki.

Wot I Think: Sacred 3

by John Walker
Pete Mecum

Oh wow. I'm impressed for all the wrong reasons...

Sacred has always been Diablo’s cheeky little cousin. Made with none of the precision or flair of Blizzard’s series, they’ve been bumbling action-RPGs that have attempted humour, mostly missed, and been generic but inoffensive click-a-thons. Hey folks, that’s all about to change with Sacred 3! This game is properly, unambiguously rubbish. Here’s wot I think:

‘Not Mine’, A Designer’s Wonderfully Chaotic Animation Composed Entirely of Other Artists’ Images

by EDW Lynch
Pete Mecum

Hah! “nothing is original.”

“Not Mine” is a wonderfully chaotic motion graphics animation by designer Guy Trefler that’s made entirely out of art, logos, photos, and graphics created by other artists. The animation was his graphic design graduate project at Holon Institute of Technology in Israel. The animation illustrated his graduate thesis — “nothing is original.”

MythBuster Adam Savage Went to San Diego Comic Con in a Homemade ‘Alien’ Spacesuit With His Face Hidden by a Facehugger

by Brian Heater
Pete Mecum

I like Adam Savage.

NERD!

Adam Savage once again visited the San Diego Comic Con floor disguised in elaborate cosplay, this time in a homemade version of the spacesuit John Hurt wore in the original Alien film. To fully obscure his identity, the MythBuster had a facehugger alien attached to the outside of his helmet.

That is the shizzle right there.

Inside, the suit, Savage also donned an ice vest, as cast members of the 1979 sci-fi horror classic had passed out wearing the suits while filming. Last year, he made his rounds on the Comic Con floor dressed as Admiral Ackbar from Return of the Jedi.

Wot I Think: UnEpic

by John Walker

UnEpic is epic.

UnEpic has been around for quite a while now. Adam first played a demo of it in October 2011, and it’s been in Early Alpha for a good while since. But now it is, they say, complete. Released as a final version, feature complete. I’ve played it a few times over the years, but started from scratch with this final build. Here’s wot I think:

Flux Capacitor USB Car Charger That Looks Like Doc Brown’s Time Travel Device From the ‘Back to the Future’ Films

by Justin Rampage
Pete Mecum

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Flux Capacitor USB Car Charger

ThinkGeek has created a Flux Capacitor USB Car Charger that looks just like Doc Brown’s time travel device from the Back to the Future films. The charger was teased by ThinkGeek earlier this year as an April Fools’ Day joke. Due to the abundance of feedback from fans, it is now a reality and available to purchase online.

Each Flux Capacitor Car Charger has two USB ports, each capable of charging almost any USB powered device (it pumps out 2.1 Amps). But it also has that beautiful Flux Capacitor light sequence we all know and love. Even traffic jams (either terrestrial or aerial (if your car is powered by Mr. Fusion)) won’t bother you because your device will be charging and the Flux Capacitor Car Charger’s pulse will make you feel more important than anyone else.

International Dota 2 Championships on ESPN Networks

by Valve
Pete Mecum

What the hell is ESPN?

Dota 2 Championships to be Carried Live on ESPN3,
Exclusive Final Match Preview Show on ESPN2

July 17, 2014 - Valve today announced that coverage of The International Dota 2 Championships will be presented in collaboration with ESPN on its live multi-screen sports network, ESPN3. In addition, an exclusive show previewing the final match will be presented on ESPN2 on Sunday at 8:30 pm Pacific. Live access to ESPN2 is also available on digital platforms via WatchESPN.

This year's International, happening at a sold out KeyArena in Seattle, WA this Friday thru Monday (July 18-22), features a record-breaking prize pool of over $10 mil - the largest ever for a competitive gaming tournament. And for the first time, viewers can watch all the matches, interviews, and analysis happening over the course of the four-day event on ESPN3, accessible online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app, and streamed on televisions through Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

On Sunday, viewers can tune in to ESPN2 for an exclusive preview of the tournament's final match, featuring highlights from the games, expert analysis, plus interviews with the players and Valve's Gabe Newell.

"From the success of the Compendium to the collaboration with ESPN, this year's International really demonstrates how much competitive gaming has grown to rival traditional sports," said Erik Johnson of Valve. "We believe the teams have also pushed to a new level of play this year and will further demonstrate the incredible advances made across this tournament since it first began three short years ago."

The International was first held in Cologne, Germany during the 2011 Gamescom with 16 of the best Dota 2 teams in the world competing for a grand prize of $1 million.

In 2013 the prize pool was bolstered beyond Valve's contribution by Dota 2 player participation in the Interactive Compendium, driving the total prize pool to over $2.8 million, up from $1.6 million.

This year the Compendium has driven the prize pool over $10 million.

Dota 2 is a free-to-play, online action strategy game created by Valve (Bellevue, WA based makers of multiple game franchises and the leading online distribution platform, Steam).

Wot I Think: Divinity – Original Sin

by Adam Smith
Pete Mecum

Hmm...

Some RPGs are built around systems and some are built around scripts. Divinity: Original Sin is an example of the former and its one of the finest I’ve ever seen. Oops. Gave away the ending. Larian’s lates is a single or two-player cooperative RPG with turn-based combat, crafting and an enormous world full of objects to interact with and NPCs to converse with or kill. No knowledge of previous Divinity games is required but an appreciation of the older school of roleplaying may help you to acquire this particular taste.

It’s a sprawling game, responsible for some of the most interesting experiences I’ve had in all my years of gaming. I could write about it for weeks but I’ve limited myself to a single feature. For now. It’s broken up into three parts, all of which are below.

Crazy (Not) Taxi: Roundabout Out In September

by Nathan Grayson
Pete Mecum

What's not to like?

Ahhhhhh, the scenic route

True fact: the song “Roundabout” by mega-proggers Yes is one of the greatest things. Case in point: here it is making JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure infinity times better. But that’s not actually what we’re here to talk about today. Roundabout: The Game has little (perhaps even nothing) to do with jaunty ’70s rock tunes.

Except that’s not really a problem when it’s just a different kind of great. As John highlighted last year, Roundabout is (round) about navigating a ceaselessly spinning limousine through an open world, a potent metaphor for life if ever there was one. And it has intentionally terrible FMV cut-scenes! September can’t swerve into our lives, wheels all-too-literally painting the town red, soon enough.

I Am Pretty Much All About This Rock Opera Game

by Nathan Grayson
Pete Mecum

YES MORE BETTER MUSIC IN VIDEOGAMEZ!

I have no eyes so I must sing

You might remember that I reported on the Indiegogo for a rock opera videogame called Karmaflow a while back. Dumb name I know, but rock operas are kind of inherently dumb in the most spectacular, wonderful fashions possible. The crowdfunding campaign didn’t quite get full funding, but it yielded enough for the team to really get into the multi-part harmony with string accompaniment that is game development. It’s looking like exactly my kind of thing, too: think Journey with power metal sing-a-longs. I KNOW. I know. New trailer below.

Elite Dangerous Premium Beta 2 Out, Adds Stations, Ships

by Ben Barrett
Pete Mecum

Only £100.

Corrrrrr, spaaaaace.

I’ve actually been dodging as much Elite: Dangerous knowledge as possible. The foolish, now semi-abandoned plan was to experience it at the same time as my first go on an Oculus Rift. The problem is those pesky folks over at Frontier Developments keep teasing all the beautiful things they’re putting into the game. Even if I can’t afford that hefty beta price tag, I’m spoiling myself with patch notes from the newest update containing phrases like “first flyable Zorgon Peterson” and “complex 8km diameter structures.” If that weren’t enough, they’ve put out a three minute video that’s literally just things slowly rotating space and it’s still one of the best trailers of the year.
