(Bus | Seattle, WA, USA)
(On my Seattle bus, a passenger tries to slip in through the back door and sneak to a seat without paying.)
Bus Driver: “Please come up and pay, sir.”
Fare-evading Passenger: *smirks and ignores him*
Bus Driver: “Sir, please come up and pay.”
Fare-evading Passenger: *continues ignoring him*
(Fed up, I intervene.)
Me: “That’s you, bro.”
Fare-evading Passenger: *smirks again*
(I wait a few seconds before I get up, walk over, and pull out one of his ear-buds.)
Me: “Look. I got three hours of sleep last night, I’m having a bad morning, and you are not going to make me late for work. Get your self-entitled a** up there and pay your d*** fare!”
Fare-evading Passenger: *slinks up to the front of the bus and pays*
(Note that I’m wearing a t-shirt with “Thrall” from World of Warcraft. Another passenger at the front notices and shouts back towards me…)
Another Passenger: “FOR THE HORDE!”

MAZE by Mabonona
Big neon circuit boards by Hangzhou-based artist - via neochaEDGE:
The word Maze has multiple meanings. Mabonona thought that “We are super relied on electronic products now, just like a disabled man rely on his fake leg.” However, ” We nearly know nothing about them”. He tended to show this contradiction and insecurity in the essence of the time, electronic chips. This complicated and surreal electronic “Maze” in front of us, reminds us to ask how much do we really know about the world we live in.

While I’m on the topic of ‘things most people think are ugly but I think are beautiful’, here’s some Brutalist architecture. Probably the most under-appreciated modern architectural movement ever, but I think these buildings are gorgeous.
They have a sort of ambience to them, something old, faded, yet oddly futuristic at the same time. I’m not sure if that stems from watching too much Star Trek, but that’s the feeling they give me. I love being around them. They’re familiar, comforting things. And when they’re surrounded by plants and green things, it almost looks as though these concrete structures have just risen up out of the ground.
Brutalist structures are often described as ‘monstrosities’ and are widely considered to be eyesores. As a result, a lot of amazing buildings in this style are being torn down and replaced, with little consideration of how much architectural value they might hold in the future.
Our library at university is a fabulous old Brutalist thing which I hated when I first saw but I absolutely love now. I’ll try to get a photo of it later today, if I remember.

One of many reasons why I cannot stand your acid-washed, 1990s, hipster anachronisms. Let the dead stay dead.
