brandomarlons: I don’t think that people generally realise...

brandomarlons:

I don’t think that people generally realise what motion picture industry has done to the American Indian, as a matter of fact, all ethnic groups, all minorities, all non-whites. And people just simply don’t realise, just take it for granted that that’s the way people are going to be presented and these clichés are just, I mean on this network every night, well perhaps not every night, but you can see silly renditions of human behaviour, the leering Filipino houseboy, the wily Japanese, the kook or the gook, black man, stupid Indian. It just goes on and on and on. And people actually don’t realise how deeply people are injured by seeing themselves represented, not so much the adults, who are already inured to that kind of pain and pressure, but children. Indian children seeing Indians represented as savage, as ugly, as nasty, vicious, treacherous, drunken. They grow up only with a negative image of themselves and it lasts a lifetime.

7 Extensions Firefox Users Love That No Other Browser Has

by Joel Lee
Fatbob

i shared this not cause its good, but cause its stupid as fuck, 2 of these are useful, tree style tabs and firebug. both which could be rewritten for any browser. i dont understand the following behind firefox

firefox-extensions

The browser war is still going strong. What makes one better than the other? Speed? Memory usage? Built-in features? The only real answer is “personal preference” and, as it turns out, browser extensions make up a big part of those preferences. It’s becoming more common for extensions to be supported across many browsers, but that isn’t always the case. For a long time, Firefox was hailed as superior to other browsers, including Chrome, due to its massive selection of powerful extensions. The gap has shortened in recent years but hasn’t completely closed. Check out these beloved Firefox-only extensions that are...

We’ve seen no shortage of projects using layers of glass to simulate bodies of water the last few days. First we had glass sculptures by Ben Young, followed by several amazing river and lake tables Greg Klassen. Now we have designer Christopher Duff of Duffy London who has released concept images of the Abyss Table, a carefully layered table made from sculpted Perspex and wood that creates a geographic cross-section of the ocean. The tables will be limited to a series of 25 and are available for purchase here.

It should be noted that these are digital renderings of what the final piece should look like, it will be great to see photos of the actual tables once they are built. You can see a few more renderings on their Facebook page. (via designboom)

Ten Fun Facts About Stand By Me

http://geektyrant.com/news/10-fun-facts-about-stand-by-me

Stand By Me is one of those classic period piece flicks that makes you want to reminisce about the good old days, recounting tales of your youth to whoever is watching the movie with you, and it also helps remind people that Stephen King writes more than just “monster books”.

In fact, many people are unaware that Stand By Me is based on the classic King novella The Body, which was first published in 1982 as part of the collection Different Seasons.

Rob Reiner directed the film adaptation, and he did such a good job with this film that it's still fun to watch even if you’ve seen it a hundred times and known all the lines by heart.

Want to know more about this classic flick? Read 10 Fun Facts About Stand By Me, compiled by the fine folks at GeekTyrant.

Sea Level Rise Is Forcing This Island Nation To Buy Land 1200 Miles Away

The nation of Kiribati is a string of 30 or so tiny islands in the Pacific, each just a few feet above the sea. Thanks to climate change and rising seas, it's officially screwed. So Kiribati's government has come up with a drastic and unprecedented decision: buy 5,460 acres of land that is 1,200 miles away in a whole other country.

A Pig With Swords

by Miss Cellania

Redditor doodlebug001 apparently works at a college in New Hampshire and posted a story in the headline: An international student ran into our office wearing oven mitts, panicking about a "pig with swords" in his apartment. It wasn’t long before redditor AWildSketchAppeared had an illustration for that intriguing sentence.

When the staff went to investigate, here’s what they found.

It took 45 minutes to shoo the porcupine out of the apartment, and almost that long again to get him to go into the woods. By then he had lost a lot of quills due to panic. The student was Chinese, and someone explained that the Chinese word that means porcupine translates literally to “sword pig” (he didn’t say whether that was in Mandarin or Cantonese). So the student was doing the best he could with the English he knew.

15 Empowering Illustrations for Women

by Alex Santoso

"It has always bothered me, the world's attempts to control women's bodies, behavior and identities," Carol Rosetti said to Mic, "It's a kind of oppression so deeply entangled in our culture that most people don't even see it's there, and how cruel it can be."

So Rosetti decided to do something about it. The Brazilian artist decided to post a series of artwork centered around the issues of gender identity and sexuality, body image and other topics on Facebook. The response was tremendous: thousands of people shared her empowering illustrations worldwide, and Rosetti's series "WOMEN in english" has gone viral.

Originally written in Portuguese, Rosetti is now working on translating her artwork into other languages. "I can't change the world by myself," Rosetti added, "But I'd love to know that my work made people review their privileges and be more open to understanding and respecting one another."

Here's a few of Rosetti's empowering artwork:

Midora may hit consoles, is #19 on Steam Greenlight

by Jonathan Holmes

Midora's art is so nice that many thought it was too good to be true, leading to claims that the game's graphics were directly lifted from The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. Those accusations have been debunked, but that wont matter either way if the game doesn't get produced. Right now the game is a little over $40K funded, with a goal of $60K total and 8 days left on the campaign. That's far from a sure thing, thought things are looking better on Steam Greenlight, where the game is currently sits at #19.

I'm still rooting for the Kickstarter to make it though, mostly for the perks and the potential for console ports. Current stretch goals place a Wii U/3DS port at $80K, PS4/PS Vita at $100K, iOS/Android at $120K, and Xbox 360/Xbox One at $140K. I'm thinking that the only port with a chance in heck is Wii U/3DS, but you never know what'll happen in this wacky modern world of ours. I mean, Tetsuo is apparently Scarlet Johansson now fer cripes sake...

6 Disney Princesses' Secret to Beauty: Photoshop!

by Alex Santoso

What? You think those Disney Princesses look fabulous without a little Photoshop help?

Jen Lewis of Buzzfeed showed us the cold, hard facts of the pervasive use of Photoshop in the unforgiving life of celebrities, where even fictional animated ones like Disney Princesses are under extreme pressure to look beautiful.

I suppose that a little Photoshop help isn't that big of a deal for Ariel (shown above). After all, didn't she undergo extreme surgery to get rid of that tail?

Here's a few more examples:

Jasmine: Covered Conjoined Head, Removed Sixth Finger

Cinderella: Removed Leno Chin, Tiny Hand, Tamed Sassy Eyebrow

Aurora: Flipped Upside Down Face

Belle: Fixed Lazy Eye

And Pocahontas, God bless her, is no longer Nick Cage:

YouTube: Slow Buffering Is Totally Your ISP's Fault

by Christina Warren

Feed-twFeed-fb

YouTube wants you to know that if you're experiencing playback issues, blurring video or excessive buffering, it's probably your Internet service provider's fault.

Taking a cue from Netflix, YouTube has initiated its own Video Quality Report to let users know what type of performance they get from their ISP.

YouTube initially rolled out the Video Quality Report at the end of May, along with a video explaining why YouTube-suckage is totally not YouTube's faultMashable covered the survey's initial rollout, but what makes this worth revisiting is an additional detail noticed by Quartz. Read more...
