Bitcoin Mining Has An Absurd Environmental Impact

by Lily Newman
Dbhalstead

This is somewhat irrelevant (in the sense that other major companies alone use much more energy) but among our friends, does anyone mine for bitcoins? I just read up a ton on what it is and it sounds... strange... too strange. And here's a conspiracy theory to make you laugh, it'd be so cool if all the computers mining were creating code and assisting with true A.I... Skynet! Hahahaha.

Click here to read Bitcoin Mining Has An Absurd Environmental Impact Ah digital currency. It's all in our collective hive-mind right? Coming and going in bits and bytes. Nothing to see here. So why is a hacking process called "Bitcoin mining" using $150,000 worth of electricity a day? This had better be good. More »

The Range Rover Sport Prototype Is My Kind Of Doomsday Ride!

by Máté Petrány
Dbhalstead

Kidist, you still want that G-Wagon?

Think about it! The 2014 Range Rover Sport is probably the best choice when it comes to apocalypse. While it might not be the toughest off-roader out there, overall it's the fastest both on and off tarmac, and its luxurious and comfortable enough for any long-lasting journey. It can also seat 7 if necessary.

The only problem is the paint job, which you don't want to mess up on a car starting at $63,495. That's why I would use one of the prototypes covered in camouflage. It they could take what Land Rover engineers had thrown at them around the planet, I'm pretty sure the end of the world as we know it wouldn't brake them either. Also, they look badass!

Holy Crap Get Out Of The Way Of The Damn Train Your Phone Isn't Important

by Travis Okulski
Dbhalstead

This was terrifying. Some were commenting on the article that it may have been a suicide attempt (there's an additional video where the girl explains that it was a suicide attempt). I'm thoroughly confused but still glad she didn't die.

If you drop your phone on the train tracks, go buy a new phone. You'll live. If you go after your phone on the train tracks, you might not.

This happened in Sao Paulo, Brazil. How the woman got out before she was, y'know, squished by the train, is beyond me. Props to the security guard that helped pull her off the track. Also, kudos to the guy that filmed this instead of trying to help get the girl off the tracks.

He's the real hero here.

Watch A Marine's Unbelievable Road Rage Explosion

by Patrick George
Dbhalstead

Hahahaholy hell wow.

There's road rage, and then there's motherfuckin' road rage. This incident from the Marine Corps' Camp Pendleton in California definitely falls into the latter category, and it was caught on video for the whole world to see.

The video, which was also posted on Gawker yesterday, shows a man identified as a Marine sergeant by 10News.com who attacks a truck with his bare hands and demanding that the driver come outside to face him. It's all captured on film by the driver's sister who is herself a wounded Marine in a wheelchair. She gets called a "cunt" and a "whore" by Prince Charming in the DC Shoes t-shirt.

Things only escalate as the Marine howls like a little baby while he attacks the car, and several other people have to hold him back. All the while, the truck driver stays cool as a cucumber, barely reacting to the man and not moving at all.

10News has more on what happened to the couple in the truck from a friend of theirs named Lisa, who described them as traumatized after it happened:

Lisa told 10News she sent the video in after she was outraged about how it all went down.

"He cut them off and apparently he kept brake-checking them," said Lisa. "He would slam on his brakes abruptly. They hit into the back of him on the third time."

10News contacted the Public Affairs Office at Camp Pendleton, which had not yet seen the video. They tell 10News that the Marine was detained after the incident and cited for communicating a threat.

The office also said in a statement, "This individual's behavior does not meet the standards that are expected of our Marines and it has received the attention of senior base staff."

Scary stuff. I think the driver did exactly the right thing here. He stayed in the car, kept calm, and had his sister keep her camera rolling, which I'm sure will be used as evidence in this guy's prosecution.

Thing is, I almost — almost — feel sorry for the road rager. It's kind of sad to see just how far he takes this. He's clearly unbalanced and I hope he gets the help he needs before he hurts someone for real.

Hat tip to Stephen S.!

World's Greatest Driving Instructor Arrested For Instructing Student How To Drive

by Raphael Orlove
Dbhalstead

At first I thought this was ridiculous, but after finishing the article, I actually agree with the driving instructor's intentions.

A West Virginia driving instructor was arrested last week for allegedly telling a student to 'do donuts' in a field. Apparently teaching car control is a crime now.

At the end of March, well known South Charleston driving instructor Edwin "Bud" Anderson was instructing one teenage girl and told her to drive onto a field owned by the University of Charleston. Anderson stated that the girl is going into the military, and she should have experience driving offroad, like she would in a Humvee.

WCHS-TV reports that Anderson instructed her to take "quick turns between several power poles." For this, Anderson was charged with misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor and destruction of property.

The Charleston Daily Mail reports that South Charleston Police Officer B.A. Paschall saw the girl doing "doughnuts" in the field and called for backup before approaching the vehicle. When Anderson explained what was going on, Paschall argued that the car was unsafe for off road driving, in that it lacked a roll cage or five-point harness. The Daily Mail also reports that the University of Charleston indicated it wanted Anderson charged.

While in handcuffs, Anderson told reporters, "at 20 miles an hour, there was no problem."

A second student, James Caraballo, was in the back seat during the whole lesson and backed up his teacher. He told WCHS-TV, "I don't see what the problem is, really. “They are trying to say he was contributing to delinquency, but he was trying to teach them how to survive in case of danger."

It's not even clear to me that Anderson did have his student do donuts. I don't exactly trust these police officers to know what a 'donut' even is. These people arrested a driving instructor for teaching a student how to drive, after all. It sounds to me more like he was just trying to give her a sense of how a car feels off road. These lessons could well be applied to driving in the snow or heavy rain, something Americans could certainly use more instruction for, not less.

'Fuel Saving Tips'

by Travis Okulski
Dbhalstead

Some of you have newer cars but still should take this into consideration. My favorite bit in here though is the myth of a more viscous oil being better for fuel economy: A. I've never heard that, and B. Common sense dictates you want less friction but not too little viscosity (If you can't find the recommended oil in your manual, the SAE number can be found on your oil cap.

Say hello once again to master technician Pat Goss as he deals out the straight dope on fuel savings, yo.

Pat is here to tell us some facts and some lies about saving fuel. Did you know that there are lies out there?

Welp, Pat Goss goes nuts on air filters, spark plugs, engines, and all other manner of engine parts to give you the straight and narrow. Listen up.

The New California Act That Would Let Consumers Find Out Who Has Their Personal Data—And Get a Copy

We should all already have access to this info but nooooooooo.

Click here to read The New California Act That Would Let Consumers Find Out Who Has Their Personal Data—And Get a Copy Let's face it: most of us have no idea how companies are gathering and sharing our personal data. Colossal data brokers are sucking up personal facts about Americans from sources they refuse to disclose. Digital giants like Facebook are teaming up with data brokers in unsettling new ways. Privacy policies for companies are difficult to read at best and can change in a heartbeat. And even savvy users are unlikely to fend off the snooping eyes of online trackers working to build profiles of our interests and web histories. More »

Safer Bladeless Windmills Could One Day Dot the Countryside

by Andrew Liszewski
Dbhalstead

See the little video further down in the article to see how it works. I like the idea of having less moving parts so maintenance costs should be significantly lower.

Click here to read Safer Bladeless Windmills Could One Day Dot the Countryside Opponents of windmills cite the dangers the spinning blades post to birds, the risk of damage due to storms, and the maintenance required to keep all those moving parts running smoothly. But what if a windmill lacked blades and didn't move at all? That's the idea behind the Delft University of Technology's EWICON which looks more like a modern piece of art more than an eco-friendly source of energy. More »

Click here to read Why Refusing to Apologize Feels Better than Apologizing Nobody really likes to go through the act of apologizing for a mistake.
