Construction to Begin This Summer on Hollywood ‘Wizarding World of Harry Potter’

by Angie Han
Sue

David, if you ever wanted to go to California just tell Sarah this is happening.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Harry Potter is making his way to sunny Southern California. In a unanimous vote, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has given the go-ahead to NBCUniversal’s plans to build a Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The attraction is part of a $500 million plan from the company which also includes upgrades to the studio backlot’s office space, TV production facilities, and other infrastructure. Hit the jump for more info.

The board’s decision came this week after a seven-year public hearing and environmental approval process. Universal officially announced plans to build a Wizarding World in Hollywood in late 2011, about a year and a half after the first Wizarding World in Orlando debuted in Orlando. The Hollywood park will go where the 6,000-set Gibson Ampitheater once stood.

Details on exactly which attractions will make it into the new Wizarding World are scarce, but we’ve previously heard that Orlando’s Hogwarts Castle and the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride would be replicated in Hollywood. Hogsmeade is also likely to make its way to California.

Construction will begin this summer on both the Hollywood park and the studio upgrades. NBCUniversal estimates that its overall 25-year “Evolution Plan,” of which the Harry Potter park is a part, will create over 30,000 jobs and generate $2 billion in economic activity for the area. No opening date for the Harry Potter park has been announced, though early reports indicated it wouldn’t be until 2016 or later.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando proved a massive success, increasing attendance by 68% at Universal Orlando. Plans are already underway to expand the original attraction. Another Wizarding World, at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, was announced last year.

UNIVERSAL CITY, California, April 23, 2013 – NBCUniversal announced today plans to begin construction of the first projects of its 25-year Evolution Plan. The Evolution Plan represents a $1.6 billion investment in tourism and production. This long-term investment in two industries that are vital to Los Angeles will create more than 30,000 jobs and generate $2 billion of economic activity during operations for the region.

“After nearly a decade of work on the Evolution Plan, today’s vote sets the stage for our next 100 years in Los Angeles,” said Ron Meyer, president and COO of Universal Studios. “We are thankful for the support and leadership we have received from both the County and City of Los Angeles and are ready to get started investing in these important tourism and production projects in the next few months.”

Starting in late summer, NBCUniversal will begin construction of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter themed land at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, as well as new and upgraded television production facilities, office space and infrastructure on the Universal Studios lot. These projects represent a nearly $500 million investment in the Los Angeles economy and the creation of more than 2,000 construction jobs alone.

“We thank Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, the entire Board of Supervisors, and County staff for providing us the path to bring much needed jobs and investment to Los Angeles,” said Corinne Verdery, Chief Real Estate Development and Planning Officer, NBCUniversal. “The working relationship we have built with the community was invaluable in developing our future plan and we are grateful to our nearly 7,500 supporters and union partners who have been with us every step of the way. We look forward to bringing The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Hollywood, forever changing the face of tourism in Los Angeles.”

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood will be a fully immersive experience for the entire family designed to bring the Harry Potter fiction and films to life with impeccable detail and authenticity. Similar to the dynamic Universal Orlando Resort themed land that opened in 2010, the Hollywood experience will be faithful to the visual landscape of the fiction and films, including Hogwarts castle that will serve as the centerpiece of the impressively themed environment. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Entertainment and Universal Parks and Resorts.

On the Universal Studios lot, NBCUniversal will upgrade existing production facilities and add new capabilities to better respond to the needs of television production. In addition, NBCUniversal is looking to create modern offices that will house everything from post-production services to traditional office space.

Amazon Planning to Release Its Own Set-Top Box?

by Angie Han

Amazon Logo

Amazon took its first stab at original programming last weekend with 14 new pilots. By the time those shows actually make it to series, customers may also have a new box to watch them on. According to a recent report, the e-tailer is working on a streaming device to compete with Apple TV, Roku, and Boxee, and the like, with plans to introduce it this fall.

Businessweek got the scoop from “three people familiar with the project.” The set-top box will give users access to Amazon’s catalog of streaming content, including both the a la carte Video On Demand selection and the $79/year Prime subscription service.

There are already several devices on the market that let viewers stream Amazon titles directly into their living rooms, including Roku, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Sony Playstation 3. Additionally, users of Kindle Fire and Apple’s iPod, iPhone, and iPad can download apps to watch Amazon videos.

Likewise, Amazon’s machine will probably allow users to watch video from competing streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube. Even in that case, though, Amazon’s own offerings will likely be featured more prominently — much like Apple does with iTunes on Apple TV.

The set-top box is currently in development at Amazon’s Lab126 division in Cupertino, led by Malachy Moynihan, former VP of emerging video products at Cisco Systems. Andy Goodman, formerly of TiVo and Vudu, and Chris Coley, formerly of ReplayTV, are also involved in the project.

Businessweek speculates that the new device will be called Kindle TV, but no name has officially been announced at this time. Nor has a release date, although the sources say Amazon wants to launch it this fall, just in time for the holiday shopping season. Amazon, meanwhile, is keeping quiet about the new product, saying only “no comment” when approached by Engadget.

‘Elysium’ Viral Campaign Kicks Into High Gear; Promises Event Next Week

by Germain Lussier
Sue

"So when one man (Matt Damon) decides the only way to save himself is to go Elysium, he takes on a suicide mission that include becoming a cyborg, to try and break onto the station. Sharlto Copley plays a bounty hunter on his tail and Jodie Foster plays the head of Elysium."

This is basically perfect.

Elysium viral header

Forever and a day has seemingly passed since fans were given their first glimpse at Neill Blomkamp‘s sophomore sci-fi film, Elysium, which stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley in a story about a man (Damon) trying to reach Elysium, an orbital community of the rich and powerful, in order to save his life. That glimpse was at Comic-Con 2012. Soon after that, Sony Pictures bumped the film to August 2013. In the meantime, we’ve seen a few photos here and there but only the lucky few in Hall H at Comic-Con have seen actual footage from the film.

That seems like it’s going to change in the next few days as Sony has kicked off a new viral site for the film. On the site, four locations are revealed (including New York and Los Angeles) to be having “Live Demonstrations” of Elysium “By Appointment Only” with links to a GoFobo page. Sounds like a footage screening to me. Get the links and explore the viral site below.

Thanks to MovieViral (via First Showing) for the heads up.

The first update comes to the site armadyne.net, which has been up and running since Comic-Con 2011. Many new links have gone active on the site with tons of information teasing the story of how Elysium came to be, the technology behind it and what it really is.

What is it? Sure, 200 words in is a great time to explain the plot of the film. Elysium is a Utopian space station society where the Earth’s rich and famous can go and live in perfect health and harmony. That’s the direct opposite of what’s going on on Earth: disease, death, overpopulation. So when one man (Matt Damon) decides the only way to save himself is to go Elysium, he takes on a suicide mission that include becoming a cyborg, to try and break onto the station. Sharlto Copley plays a bounty hunter on his tail and Jodie Foster plays the head of Elysium.

Back to the viral. In additions to armadyne.net, www.welcometoelysium.com is now live. That’s where you can link to the “live appointments.” I’ve contacted Sony for more information on those but have yet to hear back. It certainly feels like one of those exciting, can’t miss viral marketing events though.

Keep it locked here for more on Elysium and, check out this video blog we did at Comic-Con 2012 that talks more about the film and our excitement from the footage:

‘A Single Shot’ Trailer: Sam Rockwell Hunts to Live

by Russ Fischer
Sue

I heart Sam Rockwell. I heart him so much.

large_a_single_shot_1

The big recent roles from Sam Rockwell have been comedic — think of his turn in Seven Psychopaths, his work in The Sitter, hell, even his Iron Man 2 performance had a comic tinge. And when audiences get a chance to see The Way Way Back later this year, they’ll see a very endearing and funny turn from the actor.

A Single Shot appears to have only the smallest funny bone. It is an adaptation of a novel by Matthew F. Jones, in which a man (Rockwell) loses his family farm, and poaches game to survive. But things go bad when he takes aim at the wrong target. The trailer is very much in a sort of post-Malick mode, with a bit of dialogue setting the stage for a cascade of imagery backed by tense, insistent violins. It gives a sense of danger more than it conveys a full story.

The music in that piece, by the way, is a segment from ‘Fratres’ by the minimalist Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. The piece is among Pärt’s best-known, and can be found recorded from a few different performances. I’ve got the Gil Shaham one, but I believe this is the one performed by Tasmin Little and Martin Roscoe.

A Single Shot will show at the Tribeca Film Festival, which offers this blurb:

A Single Shot brings together a wealth of indie stalwarts, including Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Melissa Leo and Jeffrey Wright, to paint a tense portrait of John Moon, a man attempting to win back his estranged family while desperately outrunning an accidental crime. Director David M. Rosenthal returns to the Festival with this ominously atmospheric and suspenseful backwoods tale of circumstance, based on Matthew F. Jones’s 1996 novel. After the loss of his family farm, John Moon is a desperate man. A master hunter, his ability to poach game in-season or out is the only thing that stands between him and the soup kitchen line. Until Moon trespasses on the wrong land, hears a rustle in the brush, and fires a single fateful shot.

‘This Is The End’ Red-Band Trailer #2: Michael Cera Gets Saucy With Rihanna and McLovin

by Germain Lussier
Sue

NSFW. Also watch Emma Watson hit Seth Rogen in the face with an axe around 2:16.

This is the End Fire

Put James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson in a room together and there’s no telling what’s going to happen. They might make a sequel to Pineapple Express, they might try and perform an exorcism, or they might just rip each other to shreds verbally for each other’s enjoyment. And that’s not even considering what’s going on outside.

In This is the End, written and directed by Rogen and Evan Goldberg, those six actors are the survivors of a massive, star-studded party that occurs at James Franco’s house during the start of the apocalypse. Many stars die and, come June 12, many laughs will be had. After the big WonderCon panel over the weekend (read our coverage and interview here) they’re debuting a brand new red-band trailer. Check it out below, and check back later this week for the tamer, but still hilarious, green band trailer too.

Thanks to Machinima for the trailer.

Again, please visit this page to see our interview with Rogen and Goldberg and check back later this week for the greenband trailer.

The comedy This Is The End follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.

Jason Statham and Tom Hardy Rumored For ‘Escape From New York;’ Kurt Russell Insists Snake Plissken Be American

by Russ Fischer

Escape from New York poster by Jay Shaw

Today, Empire ran a great new photo of the original Escape From New York team of director John Carpenter and star Kurt Russell. Along with the pic, Carpenter commented on the potential new reboot of Escape From New York (“they don’t know where they’re going with it”) and Russell opined on the problem with casting a new version of his character Snake Plissken. ”If you’re going to do him, do him young. He’s one of those guys,” Russell says. “When it comes to Snake, I can tell you one thing… he’s American. It’s really important that he’s American.”

Appropriately enough, we’ve now got some potential casting options for the reboot/prequel, and neither is an American actor. Tom Hardy and Jason Statham are the two actors that have been newly rumored as the possible new Plissken in the film Joel Silver is setting up to be the first in a new trilogy.

The Daily News (via The Film Stage) says that Statham and Hardy are in the mix for the lead, but that’s something to take with a grain of salt at this point, given the source.

That said, the actors are two obvious choices to some extent, being solid on-screen tough guys with an established fanbase. But Statham seems too old, especially given that this first reboot/prequel is said to be designed as the first of a trilogy that will include origin elements. Presumably that means that we’ll see Snake’s early days, and/or the fall of New York, and the city’s transformation into a maximum-security prison.

Between the two, Hardy seems like the better choice. But he’s already got one reboot sci-fi/action franchise in the works, as the lead of the cast of Mad Max: Fury Road. Would he sign on to another franchise? Some actors would, but Hardy doesn’t seem like that guy.

‘The Wolverine’ Domestic and International Trailers: Vulnerable and Dangerous

by Angie Han
Sue

It's an X-Men movie that doesn't look terrible! My dreams might finally be coming true.

The Wolverine

The marketing machine for James Mangold‘s The Wolverine has spent the week so far whetting fans’ appetites with a steady trickle of stills, posters, motion posters, and very, very short teasers. Now, at long last, here’s the main course. The first full-length trailers for The Wolverine have arrived, and you can check them out after the jump.

The Wolverine unveiled both international and domestic versions of the trailer this morning. They’re fairly different, so be sure to watch them both. Here’s the international one:

And here’s the domestic cut:

The first Wolverine trailers arrive fairly late, all things considered. This summer’s other big superhero releases, Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel, put out their first trailers last year and have put out multiple additional promos since then. But it’s worth the wait. There’s tons of fun blockbuster action to be had, and the bittersweet story about the price of Logan’s powers adds some heft.

Of the two, I think the American version is both more entertaining and more revealing. It shows much more of the Silver Samurai (Will Yun Lee) and Mariko (Tao Okamoto), and paints a clearer picture of what Logan (Hugh Jackman) goes through in the movie. Immortality may be a curse, but mortality has its downsides as well.

Rila Fukushima, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, and Brian Tee also star. The Wolverine premieres July 26.

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.
