Family Portraits Illustrated with Paper by Jotaká

by Christopher Jobson

paper-1

Spanish illustrator Juan Carlos aka Jotaka created this fantastic series of paper family portraits by rendering his bendy illustrated characters in cut paper. Titled La siesta, he describes the images as “a personal project about hugs, the importance and the ideal time to receive them.” Some of these are available as prints in his shop, and he regularly updates a blog here. Man Toasts Giant Marshmallow Over Fire Made Entirely of Snow

by Sara Barnes

As massive amounts of snow have coated US cities like Boston and New York, there’s one sure-fire way to make the most of it - build a snow sculpture! Brendan Schaffer, of Schaffer Art Studio in Stillwater, New Jersey, constructed this fantastic, larger-than-life fire and marshmallow completely out of snow. He even used food coloring mixed with water to “spray paint” the roaring flames and logs. The marshmallow attached to the stick is also a fun, unexpected addition to this frigid kindling.

Schaffer works at Fairview Lake YMCA Camp, and he clambered to have some fun before the blizzard hit. His love of campfires with guests inspired this creation that took more than four hours to complete. We only hope that Schaffer enjoyed some hot cocoa and marshmallows indoors after he finished building!

CRYSTAL HANDS

by paperfashion

Andy Espinoza and I have teamed up again to create a series of jeweled pieces (you may recall our past collaboration here).

The magic of this piece began when I went to see the Jewels by JAR Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition blew me away… standing in complete darkness, with spotlights shimmering off of precious stones in the form of flowers, animals, and other incredible creations.

Andy and I spoke of collaborating again, and this exhibit had sparked an image that I couldn’t shake from my mind. Combining jewels with his incredibly poetic oil renderings of the human form.

I received Andy’s painting in the mail, and began layering gouache on top to bring the jewels to life (Inspired by this piece). Once the gouache was set, I applied Swarovski crystals to complete the piece.

New York-based sandcastle artist Calvin Seibert (previously) just returned from a 10-day trip to Hawaii where he completed a number of his abstract, geometric sandcastles. For the past 30 years Seibert has worked as a sculptor’s assistant and puts some of his acquired skills in construction and basic carpentry to use while executing these perfect, angular sand structures. You can see more of his recent work here.

Yoko Takahashi

by Elena
YOKO TAKAHASHI I've been such bad blogger lately but these pictures of Russia by Yoko Takahashi made me so nostalgic that I just had to share them with you. These are like looking into my childhood memories, travelling by trains to grandma's house in summer, feeling carefree. Just pictures of ordinary things but they take me into my happy place. These make-your-own clay Christmas tree ornaments and decorations are quick and easy to craft, making them an ideal DIY for the busy holiday season. The air-drying clay means that there’s no firing or kiln needed – you just roll, cut and stamp, and your decoration is good to go. These are perfect to use as personalised gift tags or as decorations to hang from your Christmas tree; you could make them for friends loved ones by personalising them with their Twitter handle or name. These are quite delicate, so be sure to gift them in person and handle with care! Here’s the step by step:

1. On a clean surface, roll out the pack of air-drying clay with a rolling pin.
2. Use cookie cutters to stamp your desired shapes and remove the excess clay.
3. Stamp the Twitter handle or name onto the clay, taking care not to snag or dent the surface with your fingers.
4. Use a darning needle to make a hanging hole at the top of the shape.
5. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours and then string with bakers twine.

Have you tried any stylish Christmas DIY’s this season? I’d love to know your ideas for making things personal!

The Olmsteads from Lindsey Boccia

by Jacquelyn
Masha Yashina

Погодки близкая мне тема, и я восхищаюсь родителями, которые столь спокойны и умиротворены, и способны играть, имея на это силы...))

I don’t have kids myself, but it’s post like these that never fail to give me that sudden pang for teeny tiny little people of my own. Captured in their element by Lindsey Boccia, I can only hope that my future family is half as adorable as the Olmsteads. So without further ado, here’s your daily dose of adorable. Take that Monday! And see the whole thing right here.

And in case you’re looking for more, here’s a super cute behind the scenes video of the first year of these two babies lives:

From Lindsey… Strap on your seat belts and your safety goggles, then brace yourself for an explosion of cute. I met the Olmstead’s at their house to capture a day of fun with Kelly, Adrian and their twin girls (cherubs), Q & R. The girls got up from their nap and worked the camera like true professionals.

This whole shoot was a blast to capture. If you don’t have kids of your own yet but are thinking about it in the near future… the Olmstead crew just might convince you to join the club.

Don’t miss…

1.) Cirque du Soleil style acrobatics led by master baby juggler, dad Adrian

2.) Twin puggies! Their squiggle tails make it in most of the shots.

3) “is it time to go?” words followed by the kids knowing to get mom’s purse

4.) what young woman can resist trying on their mom’s heels?

5.) Mom Kelly’s epic hair.

6.) Rihanna/fade baby hairstyle that actually just grew in like that.

7.) Who doesn’t love a good rabbit mask?
