Rolling Images of San Francisco’s Fog Against Neon Skies Shot by Nick Steinberg

by Kate Sierzputowski

nicksteinberg_10

Photographer Nick Steinberg has been capturing the thick fog common to the San Francisco area for the last eight years. His works, all produced in-camera and without Photoshop, bring out the neon hues found in the morning sky, colors which deeply contrast the blue and grey fog rolling over the forests below. To ensure consistency in his photography, Steinberg checks cams, satellites, and other data forecasts—tools that allow him to peak into the upcoming days’ weather patterns.

“What amazes me most about fog is the fact that no two shots are ever the same,” said Steinberg to Colossal. “This is what I call, ‘subtlety of movement’ where there are small windows of opportunity with fog as it evaporates, moves in, and undulates. This requires decisive action, tests your photographic skills, and requires one to be ‘present’ in the moment, and ‘ride’ along with [the fog].”

You can see more of Steinberg’s fog waves and other nature photography on his Instagram and Facebook. (via Arch Atlas)

Button Pin Art by Ran Hwang

Ran Hwang is a Korean-born (1960), sculptural artist primarily known for her mixed-media work with buttons, beads, pins, and thread. She describes her approach:

I create large icons such as a Buddha or a traditional vase, using materials from the fashion industry. The process of building large installations is time consuming and repetitive and it requires manual effort which provides a form of self-meditation. I hammer thousands of pins into a wall like a monk who, facing the wall, practices Zen.

Ran combines her creative vision with a meticulous process to transform ordinary objects into whimsical jewel-like creations. via & via

The lost discount shops of Toronto

by Derek Flack

The discount shop, previously a fixture on city streets and in shopping centres, has slowly been replaced by big box retailers like Walmart and the less diverse offerings of Dollarama.

If you rewind to the 1980s, Toronto was spoiled for choice when it came to these stores. You had Towers, BiWay, Bargain Harolds, Zellers, and K-Mart in addition to Ed Mirvish's palace of kitsch at Bloor and Bathurst.

towers discount store toronto

The once mighty Towers was eventually absorbed by Zellers. Photo via the Toronto Public Library.

I always hated being dragged on shopping trips to such stores as a kid, though the regularity of the experience has left these visits imprinted on my brain.

honest eds

The iconic Honest Ed's sign being removed in May 2017. Photo by Jesse Milns.

In fact, there was a measure of embarrassment in shopping at a store like BiWay for me. It was a symbol that my family didn't have a whole lot of money and couldn't afford to buy all of my clothing at Eaton's.

I still recall refusing to wear the orange tab Levis jeans I was bought at BiWay when I was around eight or nine years old. I knew that most of my friends at school had red tabs, and I considered it a great injustice to be saddled with this cheaper model.

But, of course, my mother shopped at BiWay because it was an intelligent thing to do. Money was tight, and discount shops were plentiful enough that you could easily rely on them as a source for the types of products that you were guaranteed to pay more for at the supermarket or other higher end department stores.

And so a generation of Torontonians basically grew up shopping at these stores during a time when the city was a more overtly working class place.

bargain harolds

Bargain Harolds flyer via Jamie Bradburn.

Make no mistake, these were popular and busy places in fierce competition with one another. While people tended to shop most often at the store closest to them, these businesses engaged in one hell of a weekly flyer war, undercutting each other on highly useful items that could lure customers from one shop to another.

There were also memorable television campaigns, but I tend to think that the real battlefield was on paper.

gerrad square

Gerrard Square was once home to both a Zellers and a Biway. Photo via the Toronto Public Library.

There was also plenty of crossover between the retailers over the years. Toronto's Towers locations became the now-defunct Zeller's in 1990, while Bargain Harolds was eventually sold to K-Mart.

The legacy of the discount shop in Toronto was wonderfully easy to trace for a brief moment when Target operated in Canada, which had acquired many of the retail spaces used by Zellers.

The trend has been to go bigger and bigger, leaving midsize shops like BiWay and Bargain Harolds a thing of the past (though BiWay is coming back next year).

It's not that Toronto doesn't still need cheap places to shop; the city does. What has changed is the scale of the stores and Canadian presence in the market.

A few decades ago, discount shops were largely homegrown, whereas today this segment of the retail market is dominated by American corporations.

zellers toronto

Zellers was once a major contender in the discount retail game. Photo by Patrick Matte.

BiWay bit the dust in 2001, but an attempted expansion to the the US in the mid 1990s sowed the seeds of the company's demise. Bargain Harolds was sold to K-Mart in 1985, and continued on well at first, but the parent company eventually sold its Canadian properties to Zellers in 1998.

After snatching up both Towers and Bargain Harolds, Zellers itself bid goodbye in 2012, paving the way for Target's failed entry into Canada.

"Nostalgia has nothing to do with aesthetics—it’s not even connected to happy memories," writes the French writer Michel Houllebecq. "We feel nostalgia for a place simply because we’ve lived there; whether we’ve lived well or badly scarcely matters. The past is always beautiful."

This observation might offer some insight into why places like the discount shops of Toronto's past evoke such strong feelings in those of us who spent significant time within them.

They represent where and how we lived.

'Quick, Draw!' is like Draw Something, but with Google's artificial intelligence network

by Corbin Davenport

google-quickdraw

Google has published numerous experiments with its cloud AI technologies, but 'Quick, Draw' is perhaps the most fun one yet. Using the same technology that interprets written symbols in Google Translate, the game attempts to guess what you are drawing. When you start, you are prompted to draw a specific thing, and the game continues making guesses until it wins or time runs out.

At the end of six rounds, it provides you with information about all your drawings, including other guesses and what other users provided.

Folded Aluminum Lamps Project Feathers and Antlers When Illuminated

by Kate Sierzputowski

light-1

light-2

When Tel Aviv-based designer Chen Bikovski was growing up she was fascinated by pop-up books, especially engaged with the immersive experience that came with the turn of each page. Interested in transforming this idea to work with her design practice, Bikovski founded Popup Lighting, a series of lamps that turn into magical creatures like deer and peacocks when illuminated.

“The idea behind Popup Lighting was to create a permanent light fixture that would bring a magical ambiance to any space,” said Bikovski on her website. “A multi-dimensional light that would inspire the senses and ignite the imagination.”

Bikovski’s fixtures seem like minimal aluminum sculptures until their light is switched on—the origami-like works suddenly appearing as deer or peacocks. Streams of light behind the lamps create the effect of horns and feathers, subtly casting patterns that make each work come alive.

Both of her designs can be found on the Popup Lighting shop in an array of colors. You can see more on her Instagram, while also taking a look at some light experiments with cacti that may soon join the shop! (via My Modern Met)

The Japanese Museum of Rocks That Look Like Faces

by Johnny Strategy

rockface-1

In Chichibu, Japan, two hours northwest of Tokyo, there’s an odd museum; perhaps the only one of its kind. It’s called the Chinsekikan (which means hall of curious rocks) and it houses over 1700 rocks that resemble human faces.

The museum houses all kinds of jinmenseki, or rock with a human face, including celebrity lookalikes like Elvis Presley. And according to a 2013 post on Kotaku, there are also movie and video game character rocks like E.T., Donkey Kong and Nemo.

rockface-2

rockface-3

“Elvis Presley”

According to the Sankei, the museum is currently run by Yoshiko Hayama, the wife of the original owner who passed away in 2010. But it was his rock collection that started it all. An avid collector, the late Shozo Hayama spent 50 years collecting rocks that looked like faces. His only requirement was that nature be the only artist.

There are currently so many rocks on display that some don’t even have names. So the owner occasionally invites visitors to name the rocks. The Chichibu Chinsekikan (Gmap) is a 10-min walk from Kagemori Station. However, it’s recommended that you call ahead if you plan to visit because the museum is known to unexpectedly close for personal reasons. You can explore more photos on Another Tokyo and Yukawa.net. Artist Charles Young’s Growing Metropolis of 635 Paper Structures

by Christopher Jobson

489_640

Last year we were thrilled to discover this little paper world constructed by artist Charles Young who conceived of the idea as a 365-day creative project to explore different architectural forms through paper, every single day for a year. Except… it turns out he never stopped. The tiny paper metropolis has now grown to 635 buildings, many with moving parts that Young expertly animates and shares daily on his Tumblr. The entire papercraft city will be on view from November 10-26, 2016 at the NEoN Digital Arts Festival in Dundee, Scotland.

Elegant Wireframe Animal Renderings by 3D Artist Mat Szulik

by Kate Sierzputowski

matszulik_02

Freelance illustrator and 3D artist Mat Szulik (previously) creates incredibly realistic models, digitally rendering figures that appear as if they were formed from materials such as wood, and most recently wire. His latest project, titled The Wires v2, presents the outlines of forest creatures, horses, and beetles, each placed in stark, white environments or amongst trees built in the same style as the wire animals. The renderings are almost entirely silver wire, yet many also contain a gold core to add a further layer of dimensionality. You can see works from Szulik’s first wire series, The Wires v1, as well as other 3D projects on his Behance.

Knitted Portraits by Petros Vrellis

Petros Vrellis was born in Greece in 1974. He holds a MEng in Electrical Engineering and an MA in Art Sciences. He has been working as an engineering project manager in his native Greece since 1999. As computer sciences open up new ways of expression, he tries to combine his technological background with arts by exploring the potential of new media through digital art and interactive installations.

He considers himself more of a “toy-inventor” than an artist; he believes that the most important thing is to find new ways to “play” by experimenting and even by breaking the rules. The main tools for his work are computers, programming languages (c++ and especially the “open frameworks” open source toolkit) and electronics (cameras, microcontrollers,  e.t.c.)

Baby raccoon rescued atop Toronto Star Building

by Amy Grief

toronto star baby racccoonThe Toronto Star Building had an unexpected overnight guest. A baby raccoon, nicknamed Scoop, got stuck on a fourth floor ledge and the sweet little angel was too scared to climb down (I feel you, little guy, heights are tough).

As the Star previously reported, the Toronto Wildlife Centre planned to rescue the raccoon on Saturday if it didn't make its way down itself (have a heart!).

The heroes at Toronto Fire Services, however, decided to step in and save it today. Phew! You can follow the whole #SaveScoop saga here.

Miniature Pen & Ink Drawings of the Midwest by Taylor Mazer

by Christopher Jobson

small-1

Michigan artist Taylor Mazer renders the seemingly mundane world of empty alleyways and nondescript buildings of the midwest in excruciating detail on a canvas scarcely larger than a few postage stamps. Working with a fine Micron pen he constructs old buildings brick by brick and casts entire drawings in deep shadow, forcing the viewer to explore the piece up-close to discover every minute detail. The cityscapes are devoid of people, instead focusing on architectural details, light, and the unknown forces—weather or otherwise—that force people indoors, or away altogether.

Mazer works as a freelance illustrator and artist and is currently adjunct faculty at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. You can see more of his work on Behance or Instagram, and many of his original drawings are available in his shop.

The end has finally come for Atlantis at Ontario Place

by Amy Grief
torp3918

THIS is where I saw the Lego exhibit.

atlantis ontario placeThe Atlantis Pavilion at Ontario Place is entering its final month. The long-standing lakeside event venue will close on Oct. 31, 2016.

"We have ended our lease early with Ontario Place because they are starting their revitalization project," General Manager Shelly Primeau tells us via email.

Atlantis, one of the iconic structures at Ontario Place, has played host to numerous special events, weddings and dance parties over the years. It remained open even after the rest of the amusement park closed back in 2012.

Dynamic Hospitality & Entertainment Group, which runs Atlantis, will debut another waterfront venue in April 2017 when the Guild Inn Estate finally reopens in Scarborough.

Will you miss Atlantis? Let us know in the comments.

A “Quick Perspective” on the Scale of the Manmade and Natural Marvels That Surround Us

by Kate Sierzputowski
aquickperspective_06

If the Willis Tower (1,729 ft) was placed into Russia’s Mir Mine, the tip would only stick out 7 feet past ground level. (All images via Kevin Wisbeth)

College student Kevin Wisbeth, creator of the Youtube series “A Quick Perspective,” puts size in layman’s terms for those who might not be able to conceptualize the true width of a B-2 Bomber’s wings, or understand the immense depth of Russia’s largest mine. Wisbeth digitally composes manmade structures and natural wonders to put into context each of their sizes, seamlessly fitting the world’s largest oil tanker into New York’s Central Park and hovering the M-1 Rocket motor just above a Smart Car.

You can watch the digital presentations of Wisbeth’s comparisons on his Youtube channel. (via Quipsologies)

aquickperspective_01

If the Seawise Giant (1,504 ft), the largest oil tanker ever produced, was placed into the main lake in New York City’s Central Park, it would only have 350 feet of extra room in the front and back of the tanker.

aquickperspective_08

The Burj Khalifa is currently the tallest standing structure in the world (almost measuring 2,722 feet tall). If placed in New York City, it would stretch almost 1,000 feet past the One World Trade center and almost 1,300 feet taller than the Empire State Building.

aquickperspective_02

If the Titanic (882 ft) was placed on the deck of the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, the ship would have 210 feet of deck room left.

aquickperspective_07

The B-2 Bomber is one of the most advanced and most expensive airplanes in the world. The wingspan of a B-2 is 172 feet, which is 12 feet wider than an NFL football field.

aquickperspective_09

Prehistoric bugs were larger than average day bugs due to the higher oxygen levels. The Pulmonoscorpius kirktonensis was a species of scorpion that grew to 24 inches long, or the size of a normal house cat.

aquickperspective_03

The M-1 Rocket motor was designed back in the 1950s for the NASA space program and would have been the biggest motor ever built had it been constructed. It’s designed diameter was 14 feet, or wide enough to fully cover a Smart Car with 2 feet to spare on either side.

aquickperspective_05

The Death Star’s estimated width is around 99 miles across, or around 1/4th the length of Florida.

Huge vintage clothing show in Toronto this weekend

by Amy Grief

vintage clothing showThrifters and vintage clothing lovers, you're in luck. That's because you'll be able to find all sorts of treasures at the massive Toronto Vintage Clothing Show happening this weekend at The Heritage Court inside the Enercare Centre at Exhibition Place.

The show's on Oct. 1 and 2 and it'll cost you $10 at the door (it's cash only) to get in. Once inside, you'll be able to browse through racks on racks of vintage goods, including designer items.

There will be more than 80 vendors on site, and you should probably keep an eye out for Gadabout, a local store that recently acquired a ton of pieces from the 1800s and early 1900s. These items might be pricey, but you can always window shop.

The Toronto Antique and Vintage Market is happening simultaneously, so you'll be able to grab some fun tchotchkes for your house too.

Ominous Storms Photographed in Black and White by Mitch Dobrowner

by Christopher Jobson
lead-1

Regan, North Dakota, 2011

Photographer Mitch Dobrowner travels the U.S. and sets up his camera in front of apocalyptic storms that rise above rural fields in Oklahoma, Kansas, and North Dakota. Inspired by photographers like Minor White and Ansel Adams, he captures breathtaking landscapes that remind us of nature’s raw power by juxtaposing the endless flat plains of the southern and midwest states with dramatic weather formations. Lightning strikes and tornadoes feature heavily in Dobrowner’s black and white images that at times look like moments right out of the first few minutes of the Wizard of Oz.

Dobrowner has exhibited in galleries across the U.S. and internationally since 2005 and is represented by Photo-Eye Gallery in Santa Fe and Kopeikin Gallery in LA. You can see much more of his work on Facebook. (thnx, Laura!)
