Toronto to various places in Hawaii - $491 CAD roundtrip including taxes

by chris_myden

Kauai, Hawaii

WestJet is currently showing some great prices to destinations in Hawaii that don't normally go on sale.

However, this price is only showing for a handful of date combinations in late November and the first half of December.

These are also flights that involve just 1 stop, within Canada, which are the best (and fastest) flights to Hawaii available from Toronto.

The dates are extremely limited and availability will likely disappear quickly.

Availability for travel

November 30 to December 6, 2016
November 30 to December 7, 2016
November 30 to December 13, 2016
December 6 to December 13, 2016
December 7 to December 13, 2016

November 29 to December 6, 7 or 13 also works, but it only shows 1 seat being available.

How to find and book these flights

1. Go to FlightHub

2. Search for a flight using one of the date combinations from the list above.

As for the destination to enter, it appears to work from Toronto to all major Hawaiian airports, except for Hilo (ITO).

To Honolulu (HNL) or Maui (OGG), it's a pretty amazing price, at around 20% below the very best prices to Hawaii.

However, it becomes an even better deal when used for ...

Kona (KOA) - the Big Island (35% cheaper than the typical best price)

or

Lihue (LIH) - Kauai Island - (39% cheaper than the typical best price)

...which are typically a minimum of around $800 for roundtrip flights, especially the convenient flights that don't route through the U.S.

John Malkovich Shines in Brilliant Recreations of Iconic...

by turecepcja
torp3918

The world, so fine.

John Malkovich Shines in Brilliant Recreations of Iconic Photos by Sandro Miller

Sandro Miller (1958) is an American photographer (working professionally as “Sandro”) known for his expressive images, and his close work with John Malkovich and the other ensemble members of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

The idea was to recreate 30 iconic images with Malkovich as the subject.

I chose John because deep in my heart, I knew he was the only actor who would be willing to morph into numerous subjects portrayed in the original images

Miller spent the eight months researching ever tiny detail in the photographs, and making hires: a wardrobe stylist, a hair and makeup expert, and a set builder. The results are an astoundingly precise Malkovich-y replica. Just try not to laugh too much because, as Miller said, it was never his intent to create a parody of these works. There is not a trace of irony here. Just a genuine, wide-eyed appreciation of pop-culture photography. via

Dreamy New Architectural Watercolors by Artist Sunga Park

by Christopher Jobson

sunga-1

Bangkok-based illustrator and graphic designer Sunga Park embraces the unpredictable nature of watercolors in her drippy depictions of architectural landmarks. In her extensive travels throughout Europe, Park stops to consider the finest details of Gothic cathedrals or the antennae-laden rooftops of residential streets in Croatia, but allows entire paintings to fade away into a wash of ghostly color. The mixture of detailed elements and watery abstraction results in hazy, dreamlike imagery that seems to constantly surprise and intrigue as if lifted directly from a memory. You can follow more of her work on Instagram and on Behance.

Baby bunnies found in Toronto might set internet on fire

by Amy Grief

baby bunniesWhat better way to celebrate Friday than with a plethora of baby animal photos? Along with the zoo's new zebra filly, you can now add newborn bunnies to your list of adorable Toronto creatures to ogle at.

Staff at the Fort York National Historic Site found a litter of baby bunnies last month. As CBC News writes, they waited to post photos and videos to avoid disturbing them with an inundation of visitors.

Rainbow grilled cheese coming to the CNE this year

by Amy Grief

rainbow grilled cheeseThe CNE just revealed its 2016 lineup of outrageous, artery-clogging eats. And along with Franken-foods like churro burgers, dessert nachos and steaklairs, you can also grab (and 'gram) a rainbow grilled cheese.

The Cheesery, located in the midway, will be serving up these multi-coloured sandwiches for $8. Each one will come stuffed with oodles of pink, purple, blue and green mozzarella cheese as well as sprinkles on top.

But if you don't feel like tasting the rainbow, the Cheesery will have other goodies on hand, including a bacon grilled cheese, a pulled pork grilled cheese, deep-fried cheese curds and totchos - also known as tater tot nachos.

This majestic-sounding dish will feature deep-friend tots smothered in ground beef, avocado, diced tomatoes, green onion and cheese sauce. Step right up, folk.

Vivid Hummingbird Close-ups Reveal Their Incredible Beauty

When it comes to birds, the terms “strong” or “beautiful” might inspire images of fierce eagles or decadent tropical parrots. But both of these birds will certainly find strong contender in hummingbirds, which possess a unique sort of delicate beauty and a mastery of avian maneuvers like no other. We created this list of 20 stunning hummingbird photos to show you just how beautiful they can be.

Capturing a photo of a hummingbird in flight with clearly focused wings can be very difficult, as some varieties are capable of beating their wings up to 52 times a second. This gives them the ability to hover and fly backwards – something that few other birds can do and that none have mastered the way the hummingbird has. via Boredpanda

The TTC Gets Brutally Honest about Mental Health

by Torontoist
Brad Ross addresses those ominous "personal injury at track level" messages.

Photo by Neesa R. from the Torontoist Flickr pool.

Photo by Neesa R. from the Torontoist Flickr pool.

If you’re a regular TTC commuter, you’ve probably heard the messages plenty of times before. They’re purposefully vague, and riders seldom hear what happens after the TTC announces there has been a “personal injury at track level.”

But yesterday, when Line 1 was shut down between Bloor and Union stations, executive director of corporate communications Brad Ross took to Twitter to give commuters the grim but honest truth behind the messages.

When a rider tweeted at Ross for more information about customers who are injured at track level, he responded that the incidences involve those who have died by suicide.

The open dialogue about suicides at subway stations is part of the TTC’s larger strategy to combat mental health issues in the city. For the past decade, the commission has gotten serious about mental health, launching several campaigns to raise awareness about the emotional distress many riders face on a daily basis.

In 2011, the TTC launched Crisis Link, a payphone program that allows commuters in distress to talk directly with a trained counsellor  from designated waiting areas in subway stations. Metrolinx also launched a helpline in 2015 to assist customers with mental health struggles.

Last year, the TTC saw a decrease in suicides and suicide attempts from subway platforms—perhaps thanks to these mental health initiatives.

But some mental health advocates say that’s not enough, and many continue to call for barriers along subway platforms to prevent any suicides. In fact, in 2014, Toronto Public Health endorsed the installation of barriers in TTC stations. But the price of such infrastructure is too high for a transit agency that struggles to keep up with maintenance costs. “It would be something we would absolutely do in a perfect world,” Ross told Torontoist in 2014.

For now, riders appear grateful for the acknowledgement that such issues still exist at subway stations across the city.

Honest and open conversations, especially about the hard stuff, will always trump silence.

Amazing New Balloon Sculptures of Animals and Insects by Masayoshi Matsumoto

by Christopher Jobson

Forget your run-of-the-mill cutesy balloon dogs and crowns twisted at kids birthday parties, Japanese artist Masayoshi Matsumoto (previously) elevates the inflated craft of balloon animals to an entirely different level. The Japanese artist uses a multitude of balloon colors and shapes to sculpt creatures you might not normally associate with the children’s party activity including insects, giant isopods, baboons, and scaly lizards. You can see more of his latest works in this gallery.

Toronto quietly loses landmark Bus Terminal Diner

by Amy Grief
torp3918

Many sad.

bus terminal dinerThe Bus Terminal Diner quietly shut down earlier this year and its former home at 1606 Danforth Ave., went up for lease in late April. There's been almost no press about the closure and little is known how one of Toronto's oldest restaurants suddenly fell on hard times.

With its 1950s-style facade and retro interior, this throwback spot had been a neighbourhood staple for about 68 years - not bad for a spot slinging out simple, but filling eggy breakfasts, burgers and fries.

But what replaces it is unlikely to hone in on its throwback vibes. The 2,100 square foot space is zoned for commercial and retail use. But Michael Sapera, vice president of the The Behar Group Realty Inc. says the current owner isn't looking to lease this storied gem to an old-school restauranteur - instead, they're open to anything.

"Ideally, we would like to get a name brand or a national, somebody who's got some strength behind them," Sapera tells me. Though they'd also be okay working with an independent business owner.

It's worth noting that the nearby Allenby Theatre (or the Roxy) at 1213 Danforth Ave., is now a Tim Horton's and Esso station so there's precedent in this neighbourhood for turning iconic buildings into fast food chains. We'll just have to wait and see what the future holds for this iconic landmark east of Greektown.

New Laser-Cut Wood Relief Sculptures by Gabriel Schama

by Christopher Jobson

schama-1

Oakland-based artist Gabriel Schama (previously) continues to produce intricate relief sculptures by layering pieces of laser-cut mahogany plywood. Some of his most impressive new works see mandala-like shapes contained within the silhouettes of people’s faces, a striking idea that imbues each portrait with an unusual sense of motion and personality. Other pieces seem to utilize religious iconography or patterns from nature like reptile scales or leaves. Schama is soon to release a new collection of work for sale and you can learn more via his website.

Crawling on the ground for hours at a time in the middle of winter at the mouth of a cave doesn’t sound like a particularly fun time, but for Finland-based photographer Konsta Punkka it’s a necessary sacrifice to get the perfect photograph … of a mouse. At the age of only 21, the budding wildlife photographer has proven himself wildly capable of capturing affectionate portraits at extremely close quarters of squirrels, birds, foxes, and other woodland animals.

“My main goal always is to try to capture the emotions and feelings my animals feel while I take the photos of them,” he shares with Colossal. “The animals health always comes first and then I get the shots if I can. All animal portraits that I have taken have been done with trust between me and animals. And with patience you earn the trust.”

Punkka has amassed a sizeable following on Instagram where he shares photographs from his travels around the world.

OSSA: The Unwilling Dance Performance of a Deconstructed Puppet

by Christopher Jobson

OSSA is the latest stop motion short from director Dario Imbrogno who turns the bare essentials of an animation puppet into a striking dance performance. Much of the animation process itself including cameras, lighting, and even the hands of the animator are incorporated into the film, creating an unsettling vibe, as if the subject is being forced to perform against her will. Magical Photographs of Fireflies from Japan’s 2016 Summer

by Christopher Jobson
2016-summer-firefly-selects-spoon-and-tamago-1

Each year when summer comes along, we all look forward to different things. Some of us head to the beach, others to the mountains for camping. Some look forward to the epicurean delights like watermelon and ice cones. But for a select group of photographers in Japan, Summer signals the arrival of fireflies. And for very short periods – typically May and June, from around 7 to 9pm – these photographers set off to secret locations all around Japan, hoping to capture the magical insects that light up the night.

fireflies-2

One thing that makes these photographs so magical is that they capture views that the naked eye is simply incapable of seeing. The photographs are typically composites, meaning that they combine anywhere from 10 to 200 of the exact same frame. That’s why it can look like swarms of thousands of fireflies have invaded the forest, when in reality it’s much less. But that’s not to discount these photographs, which require insider knowledge, equipment, skill and patience.

Fireflies live for only about 10 days and they’re extremely sensitive. They react negatively to any form of light and pollution, making finding them half the battle. Here, we present to you some a selection of our favorites from the 2016 summer season. (Syndicated from Spoon & Tamago)

Van Gogh’s World Seen Through the Perspective of a Tilt-Shift Lens

by Kate Sierzputowski

All images via melonshade

Despite our humble opinion that Vincent van Gogh’s works are stunning as is, we were pleasantly entertained by the simple shift in focus made to his paintings by Reddit user melonshade. By placing the works into Photoshop and adding a bit of blur to the painting’s backgrounds, they were able to bring a new perspective to the century-old images, simulating the effect of a tilt-shift lens.

Melonshade’s interventions were inspired by image manipulations previously created by Serena Maylon on Artcyclopedia. You can also view Maylon’s altered works on Imgur. (via Laughing Squid)

Illuminated Portraits of Live Portuguese Man o’ War Captured by Aaron Ansarov

by Kate Sierzputowski

Ansarov_01

An ex-military photographer, Aaron Ansarov retired from the Navy in 2007, transforming his skills to create commercial work for magazines and focus on his own practice. Fascinated with marine life since his days growing up in Central Florida, his series “Zooids,” focuses on detailed images of Portuguese Man o’ War. Ansarov photographs the creatures on a homemade light table while alive, then immediately releases them back into the wild where they were found.

Once shot and the Man o’ War are returned, each image receives minimal manipulation, as Ansarov makes only slight adjustments to the photograph’s exposure, contrast, and vibrancy to highlight the vivid details of each venomous siphonophore. The completed works are otherworldly, appearing like alien illustrations rather than portraits, with deep blues, purples, and pinks unfurling in every direction. You can see more of Ansarov’s illuminated images on Facebook and Instagram. (via Fubiz)

Intricately Carved Wooden Animal Sculptures by  Guiseppe Rumerio Leap to Life

Rippling muscles, thick horns, and fur so realistic that you can almost feel the wind blowing through it—Guiseppe Rumerio sculpts lifelike animals with the most intrinsic anatomical details to bring his wooden creatures to life. Tucked away in Ortisei, a small town in Northern Italy, this gifted sculptor has made a name for himself in the woodworking community with his breathtaking carvings, clearly expressing his fascination with nature. All of his wood sculptures are painstakingly hand-carved, exhibiting intricate details that reveal an authentic sense of life flowing from artist to creation.

For more unique art follow: Insta || Twitter || Facebook

Posted by Andrew

Each of his pieces begin life uniquely, as Rumerio draws upon a variety of elements including books and pictures in order to create his dynamic and animated menagerie. “My great passion is observing animals,” Rumerio admits, “therefore much of my work shows them in their natural style.” With over 30 years of experience, the sculptor has fine-tuned his techniques, taking cues from masters before him. In fact, woodcarving is a 300-year-old tradition in Rumerio’s community and the artist himself began his first apprenticeship at the age of 14. Today, he is a master carver with a global reputation, creating striking works from his little studio that serves as a shrine to the magnificent nature that surrounds and inspires him.

Tattoo artist Andrey Lukovnikov has been producing a series of tattoos reminiscent of multiple exposure photography where several images are superimposed to create a single image—or perhaps the digital equivalent, clipping masks as used in Photoshop or Illustrator. Colorfully lush backdrops of flowers are ‘clipped’ by the outlines of large insects or birds, creating a visual window into another scene. Undulating Shell Sculptures by Rowan Mersh

by Christopher Jobson
torp3918

Smashy, smash; real bad.

mersh-1

Turritella Duplicata II, 2015. Turritella duplicata shells.

London-based artist Rowan Mersh assembles dense rolling surfaces comprised of thousands of seashells, tiny solid objects that now appear like fluid waves. Mimicking the natural geometric patterns found in life, the artist uses responsibly sourced shells like windowpane oyster discs or duplicata shells that are tightly arranged in a labor-intensive process, one piece at a time. The shell artworks are just a small portion of Mersh’s artist practice that also spans fashion design, textile sculptures, and interactive installations. He exhibits internationally with Gallery FUMI where you can see much more of his recent works. (thnx, Laura!)

A Photo Series Featuring an Oversized Dachshund and Her Owner Exploring Brooklyn

by Kate Sierzputowski

Vivian_01

Writer, photographer, illustrator, and director Mitch Boyer got the idea to Photoshop his tiny dachshund Vivian to an enormous scale after wanting to see her portrayed the same size of her mammoth personality. The idea was so entertaining he decided to turn the series of digitally manipulated images into a children’s book titled “Vivian the Dog Moves to Brooklyn” which depicts the pair’s own move to the city just a couple of years prior.

Knowing that each year over 5.5 million kids between the ages of one and nine move to a new home in the United States, Boyer decided to format the book as a tool to help children feel more comfortable during periods of relocation and transition. The 32-page book will feature Vivian as a six-foot-tall version of herself, adjusting to life in Brooklyn alongside Boyer and meeting some furry friends along the way.

The project is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. You can follow Boyer and Vivian’s real day-to-day adventures on Instagram and Facebook. (via Designboom)

An In-Your-Face Motion Capture Dance Performance Amidst a Flurry of Feathers, Fur, and Particles

by Christopher Jobson

This three minute dance performance was created by Method Studios for this year’s AICP Awards as a way to promote different sponsors. Each sponsor is imagined briefly as a dancing avatar rendered with the help of motion capture, procedural animation and dynamic simulations. The wild costumes seem to draw inspiration from artists like Nick Cave, Wrecking Crew Orchestra, and even Kohei Nawa. To be sure, there’s a lot going on here, but all of it adds up to something pretty amazing, a killer dance performance that merges cutting edge animation techniques. (via Vimeo)
