TTC riders have a reason to celebrate today

by Michael Ott

Transit riders in Toronto have reason to celebrate, because as of today, it's going to be a lot easier to tell someone you're late because of a delay. That's right, free Wi-Fi is finally available in every TTC subway station!

Construction of the Wi-Fi network began all the way back in 2013. The finished network is a major milestone for the TTC. The last station to be connected to the network was was York Mills, which took a bit longer than initially imagined.

ttc wifi map

Every TTC station now has free Wi-Fi. Map via Bai Canada.

BAI Canada, the company which outfitted the stations with the TCONNECT network, can now work towards expanding cellular connectivity in in the subway network and possibly the addition of Wi-Fi in the tunnels.

According to the TCONNECT announcement, riders use around 15 terabytes of data on the TTC's Wi-Fi network every month.

The Hummingbird Whisperer: A UCLA Researcher Cultivates a Community of 200 Hummingbirds Outside Her Window

by Christopher Jobson

Photographer Melanie Barboni is an assistant researcher at UCLA’s Earth, Planetary and Space Science Program where she installed a hummingbird feeder outside her office window in hopes of seeing the elusive birds and maybe snapping a photo. Two years and several feeders later, she estimates there are over 200 birds that now stop by her window every day, over 50 of which she’s bestowed with names because she can recognize them on sight. Barboni was raised in Switzerland where hummingbirds are practically non-existent and she only read about them in books. She likens the view from her office at UCLA as a dream come true, a place that she’s referred to as The Hummingbird Whisperer. (via Laughing Squid)

Dripping Glass Fusion “Jellyfish” Sculptures by Daniela Forti

by Christopher Jobson

Artist Daniela Forti lives and works in Chianti, Tuscany where she produces these fantastic artworks of dripped glass. She refers to the pieces as “Jellyfish” because of their undulating tentacles that are formed by hand through a melted glass fusion process. Each piece appears to balance like a small platter or table atop colorful, spindly drips that somehow manage to support the weight above. Many examples of her work are on view (and also available) over at Artemest.

A Pair of Giant Feet Crash Through the Ceiling of an Abandoned German Bank

by Christopher Jobson

Though it’s clearly not raising the debt ceiling, this giant pair of feet appears to be breaking right through it. The temporary installation titled “Ego Erectus” was created earlier this year by artist Mario Mankey as part of “The Haus,” an ambitious project undertaken by some 175 artists to transform the inside of an abandoned 5-story Berlin bank into a wild art attraction before its destruction. Mankey is known mostly for his two dimensional works, mostly paintings and murals depicting somewhat sinister and disheveled clowns. You can follow more of his work on Instagram. (via Visual Fodder)

New Retro Technology LEGO Kits by Chris McVeigh

Author, illustrator, photographer, and LEGO aficionado Chris McVeigh (previously) has added new retro technology kits to his cache of minimalist models, sets which include several decade-specific desktop set-ups and a boombox with multiple lego tapes. McVeigh even attempts to make each desk’s contents comply with the decade of its corresponding computer, like the version above which includes floppy disks which can be inserted into the computer, and a stack of computer manuals. You can view more of McVeigh’s lego kits (which also include different foods, bonsai trees, and video games) on his Facebook and Instagram.

Floaty Bird: When a Camera’s Frame Rate Matches a Bird’s Flapping Wings

by Christopher Jobson
torp3918

Prefer to believe that it's actually a hover-bird.

When reviewing the security footage from outside his house in Austin, Texas, Al Brooks spotted an unusual sight: a bird seems to hover past the camera with its wings completely stationary. Of course it wasn’t really hovering (and no, it’s not suspended by strings) but rather the frame rate of the camera matched the flaps of the bird’s wings perfectly resulting in a stroboscopic illusion. This is the same stroboscopic effect you might see in a video of airplane propellers that aren’t moving or when the wheels on a car appear to be frozen. (via Swiss Miss, Neatorama)

The dazzling new skybridge is up at the Eaton Centre

by Derek Flack

Toronto has a slick bit of new infrastructure to boast about after crews spent the weekend installing the helix-like sky bridge at the Eaton Centre. It won't be open to the public until fall, but it looks a lot better in place than it did being assembled on James Street beside Old City Hall.

A short stretch of Queen Street West was closed on the weekend to allow workers to transport the elaborate metal and glass structure to its place between the Eaton Centre and the Hudson's Bay Building, which is now home to Toronto's flagship Saks location.

The reflective underbelly of the bridge adds a new perspective to a busy section of Queen St. Photo by Derek Flack.

The new bridge was hoisted up into place where the previous pedestrian passageway once stood. It was an elaborate and slow-going process, but the job was ultimately successful.

In a nice bit of historical continuity, principle architect WilkinsonEyre shared designed responsibilities with Zeidler Partnership, the firm that behind the first sky bridge between these two buildings. It was a popular structure that mirrored the glass roof of the Eaton Centre.

It doesn't have much presence at night without lights, but the bridge certainly looks promising. There's a lot of work left to be done, including some touch-ups to the etched bronze exterior, but at least we'll be able to monitor the job through the glass windows.

An Owl-Shaped Cabin Invites You to Sleep off the Grid in Bordeaux, France

by Kate Sierzputowski

A cluster of three hollow wooden owls peer out from the end of a dock in Bordeaux, France, connected from within to form a two-story cabin. The Watchers was designed and built by Zebra3, a local contemporary art production company. The design was inspired by the small owls that nest on the ground in the surrounding marsh, with shingles to match their feathery heads.

“The idea of birds came to me very quickly,” said Candice Petrillo, Zebra3’s key designer on the project. “After the last extension of the commercial zone, I saw migrants swirling around in the sky, looking for the old dried wetland. The nod of animal eye and the curve of the object are a tribute to the sculptors François Pompon and François-Xavier Lalanne.”

The structure is a part of a series of unique buildings scattered throughout the region, cabins that invite guests to spend the night for free in order to encourage hiking and exploration. The project, Les Refuges Périurbains is a collaboration between Zebra3 and Bruit du Frigo. You can see more of the area’s cabins on Les Refuges Périurbains’ website, including this lakeside home shaped like a cloud. (via Inhabitant)

A Photographer Captures the Unusual Way Sperm Whales Sleep

by Kate Sierzputowski

© Franco Banfi / Licensed for use on Colossal

Photographer Franco Banfi and a team of scuba divers were following a pod of sperm whales when suddenly the large creatures became motionless and began to take a synchronized vertical rest. This strange sleeping position was first discovered only in 2008, when a team of biologists from the UK and Japan drifted into their own group of non-active sperm whales. After studying tagged whales the team learned this collective slumber occurs for approximately 7 percent of the animal’s life, in short increments of just 6-24 minutes.

The image, Synchronized Sleepers, was a finalist in the 2017 Big Picture Competition in the category of Human/Nature. You can see more of the Switzerland-based photographer’s underwater photography on his website and Instagram. (via kottke.org)

Mesmerizing New Serpentine Tattoos by Mirko Sata

by Christopher Jobson

Milan-based tattoo artist Mirko Sata (previously) has mastered the art of inking snakes, creating elaborate tangles of scales and tails that wrap around the arms and legs of his clients. Sata frequently works with opposing color schemes, creating novel contrasts between black and white or red and green in the otherwise minimalist line-based pieces. He’s also incorporated various floral motifs in place of the snake’s scales in a number of recent pieces. You can follow more of his work on Instagram.

Tattoos by  Mentat Gamze Mentat Gamze is a tattoo artist from...

by clisawork

Tattoos by  Mentat Gamze

Mentat Gamze is a tattoo artist from Istanbul, Turkey. He creates detailed black line images with a splash of red color. The red color is symbolic.

I was so happy to do what I like. I wanted to reflect this on my work and I honoured this change with the red dot. I like black tattooes and I didn’t want to involve colors thats why a bright red dot was the best choice to catch a contrast with a pitchblack tattoo. It also created a contradiction to burdensome times in my past and It was to symbolise hope and courage. Bored Panda

Artist Lucy Sparrow Opens an Entire Convenience Store of Handmade Felt Products in Manhattan

by Christopher Jobson

If you have a late-night hankering for some felty gefilte fish or a bottle of fermented fabric, be sure to stop by 8 ‘Til Late, the newest temporary installation by British artist Lucy Sparrow known for her felt recreations of everyday objects. Located in Manhattan at The Standard, High Line, the bodega is filled from floor to ceiling with thousands of objects you might find at a typical corner store from breakfast cereals, a deli counter brimming with meats, frozen foods, and spirits—all made from felt and a bit of paint. And just like a real store, every last thing is for sale.

Over the last few years Sparrow has exhibited her felt objects in galleries and art fairs around the world including Art Basel, Scope Miami, and the New York Affordable Art Fair. 8 ‘Til Late is a companion piece to her 2014 installation in London titled The Corner Shop with a similar concept but with Eurocentric products. We have word that lines stretched around the block the last few days and every object in the store has since sold. While originally scheduled to be open through June 30th, the exhibition is ending early, specifically 10pm tonight. So if you’re nearby, now’s your chance. Maybe?

You can see the finer details of some 400 individual items from 8 ‘Til Late on Sparrow’s website.

The Roman Empire’s 250,000 Miles of Roadways Imagined as a Subway Transit Map

by Christopher Jobson

University of Chicago sophomore Sasha Trubetskoy spent a few weeks designing this amazing subway-style transit map of all the roads in the Roman Empire circa 125 AD. As Kottke notes, Rome constructed 250,000 miles of roads starting in 300 BC—over 50,000 miles of which were paved with stone—linking a total of 113 provinces from Spain to modern day Britain to the northern tip of Africa.

Trubetskoy pulled data from numerous sources, but took liberties where the history is fuzzy. “The biggest creative element was choosing which roads and cities to include, and which to exclude,” he shares. “There is no way I could include every Roman road, these are only the main ones. I tried to include cities with larger populations, or cities that were provincial capitals around the 2nd century.”

You can see the map in a bit more detail on his website, and if you donate a few bucks he’ll send you a hi-res PDF fit for printing. (via Kottke)

A Look Inside Europe’s Most Enchanting Libraries by Photographer Thibaud Poirier

by Christopher Jobson
torp3918

The last one has no books!

Trinity College Library, Dublin, 1732

Over the last year, photographer Thibaud Poirier has traveled across Europe to photograph some of the world’s most incredible libraries. The series includes both historic and contemporary libraries with a special emphasis on the varied designs employed by architects. Poirier captured each image when the buildings were closed and empty of people to focus entirely on structure and layout. From his statement about the project:

Like fingerprints, each architect crafted his vision for a new space for this sacred self-exploration. These seemingly minute details are everywhere, from the balance of natural and artificial light to optimise reading yet preserve ancient texts to the selective use of studying tables to either foster community or encourage lonely reflection. The selection of these libraries that span space, time, style and cultures were carefully selected for each one’s unique ambiance and architectural contribution.

So far Poirier has photographed 25 libraries and says he intends to add to the series as time permits. If you liked this, also check out his Berlin Interiors series.

Part of Line 2 will be closed in Toronto this weekend

by Derek Flack
torp3918

Again, Saturday

As summer temperatures are about to grip Toronto, there's another TTC subway closure to slog through once the heat arrives. The central portion of Line 2 will be closed for maintenance on June 10 and 11.

There will be no subway service between St. George and Broadview stations as crews complete track work. Shuttle buses will operate between stations during the shutdown.

ttc subway closureWhile Bay Station will be completely closed over the weekend, other stations will remain open to sell fares and connect to surface routes.

According to the TTC, there will also be a series of parking restrictions in place to ensure safe and smooth bus operations through the closure. Outside of permit holders, there will be no parking on Erindale Avenue between Broadview and Ellerbeck from 3:30 a.m. Saturday to midnight Sunday.

Additionally, "street parking on Prince Edward Avenue between St George Street and Bedford Road will be temporarily restricted for safe bus operations," reads a note on the TTC website.

The TTC recommends that riders headed downtown from the east side consider taking the 504 streetcar from Broadview as a way to bypass the closure.

There are also a host of diversions on surface routes this weekend thanks to various events throughout the city. The big one is the Portugal Day Parade, which will close Lansdowne Ave. on Saturday, June 10, but do check to the TTC's roundup of other routes affected this weekend.

Regularly scheduled subway service will resume when the system opens on Monday, June 12.

With a single delicate black line, Berlin-based tattoo artist Mo Ganji (previously) creates the faces of intertwined portraits, the details of flying birds, and the forms of running animals. Each tattoo relies on an unbroken line that varies only slightly in thickness as it weaves in and out of each image, sometimes accompanied by a few accent dots. Seen here is a collection of pieces from the last year, and Ganji shares more new works on Instagram.
