Dying Lion Had No Hope Of Survival – But Then She Found Love

by Julija Televičiūtė
Mollystix

Cute...albeit with ferocious wild creatures.

Kahn and Sheila belonged to the same owner who used to rent them for photo ops and parties like many of his other lion cubs. Luckily, the two lions were rescued by Texas’ In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center, but months apart. 6-year-old Kahn was malnourished and the end of his tail was chewed off, probably because of stress and boredom, but he was easy to treat due to his friendly character. Sheila, on the other hand, was dying.

15-month-old Sheila was so weak, she couldn’t even stand up. She lay lifeless and vomited all the time but the rescue refused to give up on her. “For two weeks, I had to go in with Sheila and hand-feed her,” the rescue’s founder Vicky Keahey said. “I’d roll up meat balls and literally stuff them down her throat.” Sheila also had toxoplasmosis, an illness that results in a loss of appetite and lethargy, but Keahey kept on treating her and she began to recover. “As time went by they both healed and grew into beautiful grown lions,” Keahey said of Sheila and Kahn. The two were moved next door to each other and it was love at first sight. After 3 months of ‘dating,’ the two majestic lions were let to get ‘married’ and have been living in the same enclosure ever since. They’re crazy for each other! And the guy who abused them? He got his license revoked and is no longer allowed to keep exotic animals.

Terrifying 4,600ft Glass Walkway Opens In China, And Just Looking At The Pics Will Give You Vertigo

by James Gould-Bourn
Mollystix

No thanks.

If you’re scared of heights then you might want to look away now, because this walkway in China is your worst nightmare come true. The fact that it’s attached 4,600ft (1,403 metres) up the side of a mountain is scary enough, but the fact that it’s also made of glass is nothing short of terrifying.

Situated on the side of Tianmen mountain in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Hunan Province, the walkway is 328ft (100 metres) long and 5.2ft (1.6 metres) wide. It’s known as the Coiling Dragon Cliff skywalk, and as you can see, it certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted, but anybody who finds the courage to brave the walkway will be rewarded with an utterly breathtaking view that few will ever experience. The park is actually home to three glass walkways including a 1,410ft (430 metre) glass bridge suspended 590ft (180 metres) above the ground, so if you’re looking for adventure, or just an extreme selfie, then you know where to go.

Clever Tables That Create An Illusion Animals Are Emerging From Water

by Rūta Grašytė

...but useless as a table...

Looking to spice up your living room with a unique piece of furniture? A coffee table portraying a floating animal by Derek Pearce should do the trick.

Derek Pearce is a man with one unique vision. Called ‘Water Tables’, he creates stunning coffee tables that portray animals “floating through water”. From hippos to dolphins to ducks – he designs the tables so the animals would be plunging in and out of the glass, which represents the water’s surface. The result is truly amazing. Take a look below.

Naturally Pink Lagoon in Mexico Is The Most Instagram-Worthy Place To Be

by Julija Televičiūtė
Mollystix

So pretty.

Mexico’s pink lagoon must be the reason why Instagram was created. It’s SO pink that many people find it hard to believe it’s real. However, it’s completely natural, and there’s a perfect scientific explanation to it.

The lagoon can be found in the tiny fishing village of Las Coloradas, located on the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. No magic or paint were used to color the lagoon. It’s actually inhabited by the red plankton and brine shrimp and they dye the water with their chemicals. The fairytale-like landscape is also decorated with the piles of salt as Las Coloradas was once a salt mining town.

This Olympic Swimmer’s Reactions Take Internet By Storm And People Can’t Stop Loving Her

by Julija Televičiūtė
Mollystix

Awesome, although I didn't know there were such things as ties in the Olympics. Had to look it up.

20-year-old Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui is taking internet by storm with her adorkable reactions at the Rio Olympics. During last Sunday’s semi-finals of the women’s 100m backstroke, she achieved a personal best and made it to the finals but she had no idea about it until a reporter told her. Yuanhui’s sincere reaction was so contagious, she became a source for endless memes and articles on social media.

If that wasn’t enough, on Monday night, after competing in the finals, she was informed by the same journalist that she won a bronze medal and her unrestrained joy won everyone’s hearts. And it’s not just the Olympics getting to Yuanhui, she was just as excited during the 2015 FINA World Championships when her team won the relay. Nothing fake about her!

Refugee athlete who saved 20 lives by pushing boat for 3 hours wins swimming heat at Rio Olympics

by James Dator
Mollystix

Wow, amazing.

There are dozens of amazing teenage athletes at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, but nobody has a story like swimmer Yusra Mardini, who is competing under the International Olympic Committee flag as part of the refugee team.

Many people have their lives thanks to the efforts of Mardini and her sister just over a year ago. The sisters were fleeing Syria along with 18 other people when the refugees’ dinghy began sinking in the Aegean sea during a trip to Greece. The motor had failed, the nobody on the boat could swim except the sisters. It’s a story that often ends in tragedy, but they ensured that didn’t happen. The two women leaped out of the boat, into cold waters and pushed the boat three hours in open water to prevent it from capsizing, eventually making it to land. It was a move that not only saved the lives of the 18 people in the boat, but ensured the sisters lived.

It sounds like a horror story, but instead Mardini used the moment in her life for motivation.

"I remember that without swimming I would never be alive maybe because of the story of this boat. It’s a positive memory for me."

Now living in Germany, life is much better. Initially she began training and was being considered as an Olympic hopeful for the 2020 games in Tokyo, but the refugee team allowed for Mardini’s dream to be realized much sooner. She is working tirelessly not only in swimming, but in changing the perception of refugees around the world.

"I want everyone to think refugees are normal people who had their homelands and lost them not because they wanted to run away and be refugees, but because they have dreams in their lives and they had to go,"

Just making it to the Olympics would have been an achievement enough, but the 19-year-old just won the first heat in the women’s 100 meter butterfly.

This book is filled with drawings of Olympic women, and it's amazing.

by Jon Comulada
Mollystix

Nice.

<br>

In 2012, designer Wendy Fox was watching the London Olympics when she noticed something about the women athletes.

"I was really amazed by the physical diversity of the female athletes and how vastly they differ depending on the requirements of the sport," says Fox.

The Women's 100-meter hurdles at the 2012 Olympics in London. Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images.

Some of the fastest, strongest, most athletic, and inspiring women in the world don't have bodies that adhere to a societal ideal. They have bodies built for speed, agility, strength, and in short — kicking ass.

Fox decided to turn all 276 female gold medal winners into a poster of inspiration, perspiration, and representation.

Photo via Kickstarter/Wendy Fox.

You may know some of their names — like McKayla Maroney, Misty May-Treanor, and Serena Williams — but you probably haven't heard of most of them.

That might be because, according to a 25-year study, the coverage of women's sports in media is often shamefully small when compared to the coverage men's sports get.

In 2016, a little less than half of the athletes competing in the Olympics will be women. The most in history. So Wendy Fox is stepping it up.

She's turned to Kickstarter to help fund a poster and book filled with illustrations of every woman who wins gold in the Rio Olympics.

Photo via Kickstarter/Wendy Fox.

The goal is to inspire young girls — who will see accomplished women athletes held up as high as men often are — but also to help foster a worldwide interest in women's sports.

Women athletes are too often objectified and sexualized, with little attention paid to their athletic prowess.

A quick Google search for "female athletes" will yield a depressing amount of listicles containing the "hottest" or "sexiest" female athletes instead of anything remotely substantive.

Not to mention the fact that women in general are still held to absurd beauty standards and often judged for the way they look far more than their merits and accomplishments.

Serena Williams at Wimbledon 2016. Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images.

Just look at what happens over and over to Serena Williams, inarguably one of the greatest athletes of all time. She has to wade through absurd body-shaming controversies while she's busy doing awesome things like, I dunno, WINNING WIMBLEDON.

In her illustrations, Fox is careful to draw the athletes to scale, beautifully depicting the fact that all heights, builds, weights, and skin colors are capable of greatness.

"I would love for girls to look at this project and discover a sport that’s for them," writes Fox in her Kickstarter campaign, "especially a sport that they didn’t even know existed before and for them to make a conscious shift in their perception of what it is that their bodies are capable of."

Photo via Kickstarter/Wendy Fox.

So pay attention in Rio 2016, because the list of women champions is probably going to fill up fast. And if you pay closer attention, you'll see that champions come in all shapes and sizes.

Remember China’s Elevated Bus That Drives Over Traffic? Well, They’ve Actually Built It

by James Gould-Bourn
Mollystix

Wow.

Back in May we told you about a prototype bus in China that would, if built, literally drive right over traffic jams. Well, if we’re being totally honest with you, we never believed that the Transit Elevated Bus would actually get made. Which is why we’re pretty surprised to tell you that the TEB has literally just taken its first test drive in Qinhuangdao, Hebei!

The idea was first proposed at the 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo in May. Despite having nothing but a miniature model, developers Jinchuang Corp said they could have the bus ready by August. And true to their word, the TEB hit the road yesterday. It was only tested on 300 metres of track, but the fact that they could even make it – and in such a short amount of time – is impressive enough for us.

The developers say it’ll only take a year to finish. And this time, we believe them.

China’s Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) was nothing but a model back in May

After Hillary Clinton's historic nomination, a sign appeared at Susan B. Anthony's grave.

by Eric March
Mollystix

Thanks Susan B. Anthony!

<br>

Susan B. Anthony died in 1906 — 14 years before women won the right to vote.

Photo by City of Rochester, used with permission.

On Wednesday, July 27, the mayor of Anthony's hometown, decided it was time to update the famed suffragist on the progress of her life's work — by posting a sign next to her headstone.

The sign reads: "Dear Susan B., We thought you might like to know that for the first time in history, a woman is running for president representing a major party. 144 years ago your illegal vote got you arrested. It took another 48 years for women to finally gain the right to vote. Thank you for paving the way." Photo by City of Rochester, New York, Mayor's Office/Facebook, used with permission.

Lovely Warren, who was elected Rochester's first woman mayor in 2014, told Upworthy that she wrote the tribute to celebrate Anthony, a personal hero.

"Had she not joined with other women to fight for change, I probably wouldn't be where I'm at today," Warren said.

The tribute included two sign boards, where visitors could register their thanks to Anthony. According to the mayor, both sign boards have been filled.

Visitors sign the tribute board. Photo by City of Rochester, used with permission.

"That was one thing that my grandmother really instilled in me, and my cousins, and my family, that you never forget those people that made the sacrifices for you," continued Warren.

Warren said she hopes the sign helps those who stop by Anthony's gravesite appreciate the historic significance of Hillary Clinton's candidacy — even if they don't plan to vote for her in November.

The tribute, she explained, is also a reminder to keep fighting for the causes Anthony championed, but was unable to see through in her lifetime.

"I want everyone to recognize that this is about moving forward, regardless of anything," Warren said. "Never forget where we came from. Never forget that women didn't have the right to vote, and we had to pass a constitutional amendment to give women the right to vote. Same thing for African-Americans. Don't forget about the fact that even to this very day, women earn less than men."

"No matter what happens in November, I think that the fact that we're having the conversation is the most important piece," Sarah Abbamonte, a spokesperson for the National Susan B. Anthony Museum, told Upworthy.

Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts, in 1820, and started her career as an abolitionist before eventually turning her attention to suffrage.

Portrait by G.E. Perine/Wikimedia Commons.

She was arrested and fined for casting a ballot in 1872 — but refused to pay the penalty. The 19th Amendment, which guarantees women the right to vote, was passed the year Anthony would have turned 100.

Abbamonte said that Anthony was inspired by Victoria Woodhull and Belva Ann Lockwood — women who ran for president in Anthony's lifetime — and would have been eager to see a woman so close to the White House.

She hopes that Clinton's run — like Anthony's activism — will inspire future generations in the same way.

Photo by City of Rochester, used with permission.

"Who knows?" Abbamonte said. "There could be some young girl who's watching the news and says, 'Hey, I want to do that.' And she could go on to change the world in ways we can't even anticipate now."

‘The Simpsons’ Destroy Donald Trump, And He’s Not Gonna Like It

Haha.

Does Donald Trump read Hitler’s greatest speeches in bed? Is his hair actually a blonde dog perched on his head? Well if a hilarious new episode of The Simpsons is to be believed, the answer to both of those questions is yes. Trump may have a problem with Mexicans, Muslims, and, well, everybody, but he appears to have underestimated how damaging the opinions of America’s favorite animated family can be. Well now they’ve spoken up about the presidential election, and needless to say, they aren’t big fans of the Donald. Watch the video below to see what we mean.

Have You Read the Best Harry Potter Book?

by Jamey Stegmaier
Mollystix

What a cool guy Jamey is.

coverUntil a few days ago, I thought the best Harry Potter book was #6 (The Half-Blood Prince). Now imagine how my world has been turned upside down by discovering that not only have I not read the best Harry Potter book, but it’s not even written by JK Rowling.

More on that sacrilege statement in a moment.

When I was at my family reunion in June, my brother mentioned a book called Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. I almost tuned out when he began, “It’s fan fic, but…” Nothing against fan fic, but I like the official stance of the author. I want the real version when I’m reading fiction.

Andrew added that the author has Harry explore exactly what makes magic work in the wizarding world. Is it connected to the language of the spells? The gesture of the wand? The position of your body?

With that, I was hooked. I love learning about well-developed magical systems, and it sounded like the author–fan fic or not–was going to delve deeper into the why and how of magic than Rowling did. Sweet!

I found the book on Leanpub, and I’ve been reading it for the last week on my Kindle. It’s massive–I think I’m only through about 20% of it so far. And I’m loving it, of course. Hence this entry. Here’s what’s making it so enjoyable for me:

  1. It’s wonderful to return to Hogwarts. I’ve already spent dozens and dozens of hours there over the years, so it feels a little bit like home.
  2. It’s an alternate universe, so it doesn’t contradict Rowling. I don’t want to say too much, but I’ll give an early example: Harry’s adoptive parents are actually quite lovely. As an adopted child myself, this is wonderful to read. Why are there so many terrible adoptive parents in books? I like this much better.
  3. Harry questions everything…and finds answers through experimentation and skill, not luck. This is the whole magic system my brother talked about. Harry does a lot of experiments with magic to figure out how it works and just how far it’ll go, and it’s fascinating.
  4. Harry decides to be the hero of his own story. The Harry Potter we know and love is a solid protagonist, but quite often, the story happens to him instead of Harry actively pursuing a course of action. This alternate version of Harry Potter is an extremely active protagonist.

Is it perfect? No. This new Harry can be quite annoying at times, and the author often gives him too much space for lengthy diatribes. I skim through many of them.

Also, as good as it is, it wouldn’t exist without the real Harry Potter books. This book could not stand on its own, as it relies on the original series to compare pretty much everything against.

But that’s also what makes it work. There are so many times in Methods of Rationality where you’ll say, “Yeah, why didn’t that happen in the original books? Any other way makes no sense!” Just wait until you get to the Snape chapter. You’ll know what I mean.

Have you read this book? If so, what do you think? Have you ever read fan fic that equaled or bettered its predecessor?

Bill O'Reilly downplayed how bad slavery was. A Broadway legend set him straight.

by Parker Molloy
Mollystix

Is this real life? How can people still be so racist?

Bill O'Reilly: 'Slaves that worked there were well-fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government.'

<br>

While there were many outstanding lines from Michelle Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention, one line in particular stood out.

"I wake up every morning, in a house that was built by slaves," the first lady told the audience.

GIF from the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

The statement was a powerful reminder that our country's very foundation rests on exploited labor and racial injustice, and it was a testament to our progress as a nation and the historic nature of her husband's own presidency. It was a powerful moment.

It's a line she's used before. For example, here's an excerpt from her commencement speech this June at City College of New York:

"Graduates, it’s the story that I witness every single day when I wake up in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters — two beautiful, black young women —head off to school — (applause) — waving goodbye to their father, the President of the United States, the son of a man from Kenya who came here to American — to America for the same reasons as many of you: To get an education and improve his prospects in life."

Not everyone was happy about her statement, however, and perhaps the most notable dissent came from Bill O'Reilly of Fox News.

During the July 26 edition of "The O'Reilly Factor," the pundit tried to make a few clarifications to Michelle Obama's words.

On his show, O'Reilly said he believes it's important to note that the White House was not built solely using slave labor (though Mrs. Obama never claimed that to be the case — what she did say, however, is true). Additionally, he implied that the use of slave labor was OK because "slaves that worked there were well-fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government."

Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for Hollywood Reporter.

Broadway legend Audra McDonald took to Twitter to give O'Reilly a history lesson on what those "decent lodgings" looked like.

Warning: Tweets include graphic imagery.

What message should we take from all this? It's pretty simple: There are countless things we can argue as being "liberal" versus "conservative," but maybe the question of "Was slavery really all that bad?" doesn't need to be one of them.

It's 2016. It's OK to look back at history and admit there were certain things the country's founders did that were morally reprehensible — slavery being one of them.

That line in Michelle Obama’s speech was about progress and the need to acknowledge — and not erase or excuse — the painful parts of history that force us to grow as a country. To bring up the past and remind ourselves that the White House was built using slave labor is not divisive. It’s what helps us build a better future.

Pirate Printers: These Guys Use Urban Utility Covers To Print Bags And Shirts

by James Gould-Bourn

Although cool looking, this grosses Tom out and with good reason. The ground is gross...

Look around you. Art is everywhere if you want to find it.  Take these pirate printers for example. Not only do they see the common and often overlooked beauty in our surroundings – they also preserve them in awesome designs that they print onto bags and shirts.

The art-collective behind Berlin-based Raubdruckerin (which means “pirate printer”) uses manhole covers, grids, vents and other public utilities to make unique patterns on clothes and accessories. And as you can see, the result is surprisingly eye-catching. They work on location, applying ink directly to whatever template they like the look of before selling their creations through their online shop where you can find designs from various cities including Amsterdam, Lisbon and Paris. Like what you see? Then click here for some beautiful manhole covers from Japan that would also make brilliant t-shirt designs. Are you listening pirates?

You’re a Wizard Now With the Harry Potter Deck-Building Game

by Kendall Ashley
Mollystix

Exciting?! I want to play but I am hesitant because it is by USAopoly. Have they made a strategic game that doesn't have a ton of luck?

With the Harry Potter reinvigorated thanks to the impending release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Cursed Child script (or the play itself if you are one of the lucky few who’s seen it). So it’s no surprise that the fandom has also started to drift back into the world of tabletop gaming.

The team at USAopoly have made a Potter-themed deck-building game, and it looks to be nothing short of delightful. The game, called Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle is a co-operative deck-building game that lets you step inside Hogwarts as one of four heroes from the Rowling novels: Harry, Ron, Hermoine, or Neville. From there, you must go on seven increasingly challenging adventures to protect Hogwarts–and the world–from the looming threats of You-Know-Who, and defeat any other villains lurking in the halls of Hogwarts.

Harry Potter Hogwarts

As your character goes through each adventure, they will grow in their magical skills to become an even more knowledgeable and talented witch or wizard. These skills will ultimately help you defeat Voldemort himself. You can gain your skills by using the Alohomora! Card, which allows you to gain influence as you show your wizarding skills, as well as gain Hogwarts Cards which will provide you with useful items, spells, or allies as you complete your journey.

Hogwarts battle

You also start this game with a set of cards unique to your character, so choose wisely at the start of the game. For instance, Harry starts out the game with Hedgwig–an ally who can either attack or heal–and his invisibility cloak, while Neville comes equipped with the frustratingly unhelpful complicated Remembrall and a mandrake. By using your hero’s items and collecting new items, spells, and allies along the way, you can complete the seven adventures, defeat the Dark Lord, and restore order to the magical and Muggle world.

So maybe you never received your letter to Hogwarts, but at least with this new deck-building game, you get to put yourself right in the middle of the Harry Potter adventuring. The game isn’t on sale just yet, but USAopoly will be releasing more info on the game in the coming days, so stay tuned!

Do you like using the Potter story in a deck-building game, or would you rather see it in a different gaming style? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

Construction Worker Hides Waldo On Site Everyday For Kids In Hospital Next Door To Find

by Rūta Grašytė
Mollystix

Cute, what a creative way to cheer people up!

A thoughtful construction worker named Jason Haney thought it would be nice to do something to cheer up the children in the hospital next door. His idea was absolutely brilliant.

Haney, with the help of his daughter, created an 8-foot-tall cut out of Where’s Waldo and hides it on the site every day for the kids in the Memorial Children’s Hospital in South Bend, Indiana to spot. Once Haney is notified that the kids found Waldo, the large cut-out is moved to a different spot, and the kids look for it again. Haney has even created a Facebook group for the kids to post their finds! The best part? Haney and his daughter are already working on cut-out “Minions” for his next project!

Nobody Wanted These 3 Blind Cats, Until This Woman Decided To Adopt Them

by Andrius
Mollystix

Maybe it's just the state I'm currently in because I don't really like cats much. But this was adorable and made me happy.

Meet big brother Blue and his sisters Meadow and Little Willow, a family of three blind cats that just got adopted by the new head of the family Catherine Magno.

Their story starts just before the Christmas of 2014 when the kittens were found in an abandoned warehouse in Dubai. By then they’d already lost their sight due to a cat flu that was left untreated by their previous owner. After that came a stretch in a foster home. At some point, brother Blue almost got adopted by the previous owner’s neighbor, but the poor confused kitty couldn’t bear living without his sisters and cried all night while searching for them. Soon they were all reunited in the foster home until the fateful night of 19 February 2015, when Catherine took them under her wing.

“I had zero experience having adopted my first ever rescue kitten just a couple of months prior,” Catherine told Bored Panda. “But their story touched my heart so much that I couldn’t bear the thought of them put in a cage at vet facility indefinitely or even worse.”

Catherine was worried about the special needs of her new pet friends: “My perception was that it’s going to not only be challenging but will also require a lot of adjustments on my part,” but apparently it wasn’t that much different. “The only adjustment early on was keeping everything where it was but they are remarkably adaptive.” And as she wonderfully put it: “Blind pets see through their hearts.”

When This Animal Shelter Asked Pokémon Go Players To Walk Their Dogs, They Didn’t Expect This

by James Gould-Bourn
Mollystix

So good.

Like Pokémon Go? Like Dogs? Live in Indiana? Then get in touch with Muncie Animal Shelter because they want you to take their dogs for a walk while you’re out capturing Meowths and Rattatas.

“Trying to hatch an egg or catch rare Pokemon?” says the ad on the shelter’s Facebook page. “Come on down to the Muncie Animal Shelter to walk one of our dogs while you get your steps in! Just come to the front desk and say you are here for the Pokemon dogs!”

Phil Peckinpaugh, director of the shelter, said he got the idea after noticing people hunting Pokémon all over the city, so he joined forces with Sam Wiser, an intern at the mayor’s office, and together they came up with the ad that’s since been shared almost 25k times. So if you’re a fan of Pokémon go and you’re in the Muncie area then head on down to the animal shelter and Pika Pika Pikachoose a dog to walk!

More info: Facebook

An animal shelter in Muncie decided to use Pokémon Go to encourage people to volunteer to walk dogs

Shelter director Phil Peckinpaugh came up with the idea after seeing lots of people playing the game around town

He played it with his daughter and realized that gamers could help the dogs get some exercise

So he and an intern at the mayor’s office came up with the ad to encourage gamers to walk their dogs while out capturing Pokémon

Just one hour after the initiative was announced, lines of children and adults appeared at the shelter volunteering to walk the dogs

“There are people walking dogs [right now], posting pics on their Instagrams and social media. That exposure for the dogs is really quite epic,” he told Buzzfeed

This dog seems to be able to see Pokémon even without a smartphone!

Other dogs however have no idea what’s going on…

Propaganda Postcards From The Early 20th Century Show The Dangers Of Women’s Rights

by Greta J.
Mollystix

Wow.

These unbelievable vintage postcards from the early 1900s were used as propaganda by men to stop women from having more rights. Although The Suffragettes campaigned tirelessly to change the status quo of the day, many men found the idea of women’s rights not only disagreeable but even downright dangerous.

Because of this, propaganda postcards like the ones below were produced. They come from the archive of Catherine H. Palczewski, a professor of women’s and gender studies at the University of Northern Iowa who’s been collecting them for the last 15 years. The postcards portrayed the idea of change as something to be feared, not embraced, and they promoted women’s rights as an attack against family values as well as an infringement upon man’s place in society. While we still have a long way to go before women have the same rights as men, these postcards serve as a reminder of how far we’ve come since the turn of the 20th Century. (h/t: vintage everyday)

Halo Effect: Bioluminescent Phytoplankton Surround Swimmers in Circles Of Blue Light

by Rūta Grašytė
Mollystix

Wow, still won't get in the ocean for that though... Sharks! Also, I love phytoplankton, thanks for the oxygen man.

While in Krabi, Thailand, Philadelphia-based photographer Will Strathmann captured an astonishing image of how bioluminescent phytoplankton surrounds swimmers in circles of blue light. He posted the photo to Your Shot with the caption: “Sometimes you get lucky and stumble upon an experience that truly rocks your world… [I] heard that the bioluminescence were beginning to peak under the new moon. Imagine swimming through the ocean as thousands of microscopic plankton light up at your finger tips, flickering blue as you move through the water. While this photo doesn’t come close to the actual experience, I am proud I was able to capture, and now share this magical moment.”

A notice to people who know my kids: Please tell them what to do.

by Susan Speer
Mollystix

I'm pretty sure I tell Sam to stop doing something almost every day...

One mom's strong case for letting your kid make lots of mistakes.

<br>

There was a kid running at the neighborhood pool the other day.

Photo via iStock.

The pool attendant asked him to walk ,  as pool attendants have done since pools existed. Then the boy’s dad  (a big-chested, serious kind of guy ) came over to the attendant and told him that as the child’s father, he was the only one who could tell his kid what to do. He said that if the attendant has something to say, it should be directed at him.

Basically, don’t talk to his kid, and this dad will decide if his kid needs direction.

The attendant kept his cool and replied — carefully — that it was his job to make sure that people follow the pool rules.

He explained that "no running" is pretty much the universal pool rule. The dad pushed back and added some aggressive posturing to intimidate the pool guy, saying that he didn’t see anything wrong with what his kid was doing. As far as he was concerned, the pool guy needed to back off.

In summary: The kid was free to run at the pool because the dad said so, screw the pool rules (this is America!), nobody tells my kid what to do except me.

There’s a weird sort of fear spreading among reasonable grown-ups.

My sister’s family had some friends over, and one of the adults gave one of my sister’s kids some polite direction about sharing. Then the grown-up realized the grave error in 21st century feedback rules concerning kids who aren’t yours and apologized to my sister for shamefully overstepping.

"Are you KIDDING?" my sister said. "I absolutely want you to tell my kids if they’re doing something you don’t think they should be doing! In fact, do more of it! They need to learn to hear things from people other than me."

If I’m the only one who can tell my kids what to do, I’ve failed them in every possible way by making sure they have completely unrealistic expectations of the world.

Also, I can’t ever die because my kids won’t be able to take care of themselves. Following Big-Chested Dad at the Pool’s logic, a lifeguard can’t lifeguard, teachers can’t teach, coaches can’t coach and, later in life, managers can’t manage ... you see where this is going, right?

Is cushiony perfection for our kids a new national obsession?

We all know That Mom in the neighborhood, who is literally at the school every day, escalating everything to make sure her kid gets an A, is chosen for student council, or gets placed in the gifted program. Later, when her kid is in college, professors will hang up on her and laugh behind her back because she’ll call about something that’s none of her business.

You know this kid. We all know this kid. Photo via iStock.

My middle-schooler and his project partner failed to turn an assignment in on time after many reminders of the deadline. The other kid’s mom (who I met once, briefly) came to my house and wouldn’t leave until I talked with her for nearly an hour about the injustice of it.

She was heartbroken for the disappointment her kid must be feeling at the failure and wanted to fix it somehow. She left, but I think it was only because I told her I had no idea how to reverse the course of what happened and suggested she escalate to a school administrator if she believed the teacher could be convinced to reverse his decision. I haven’t heard back from her.

I don’t mean to brag, but my high schooler fails at quite a few things, too.

None of them too epic, but there’s still time. We talked about it recently. I told him it’s my job to let him fail while he’s still at home with me because he needs to learn how to lose his shit and then pick it up and move forward.

That’s the most major of life skills —  in my experience anyway — and I’ll be damned if any kid of mine is going to fall to pieces his first semester in college because I’m not there to fix life for him.

You remember that person from your dorm days precisely because that person became an utterly forgettable shadow.

This is an open notice to people who know my kids: You can tell them what to do.

It’s really, really OK. Tell them not to put their feet up on your coffee table. Tell them to stop running, not to play with that knife, or not to touch your things.

Actually, now that they’re older, you’ll likely be telling them not to eat all of your potato chips and beef jerky and not to take that drink onto your freshly cleaned carpet.

Whatever the rules are at your place, tell my kid to fall in. I have a selfish motive.

<br>
