Also in ‘hey, PS4, get orf moi land‘ news, it seems Sony’s latest under-telly monolith has managed to hoover up a surprise remastered version of beautifully bittersweet, death-themed adventure game Grim Fandango. No fair – so many of us PC types have been desperately wailing for these last ten years or so. The last great LucasArts game would enormously benefit from some modern spit’n'polish, especially to see its wonderful, weird scenes looking sharp and clear on our big, high res screens. To think that we may be denied it on our PCs is heartbreaking.

Fortunately, I spotted an update from Tim Schafer on the matter, clarifying that PS4 won’t be the only platform, when I was only halfway through necking that bottle of bleach, so perhaps I’ll be out of hospital in time to play the strongly-implied PC version.

Lifting that requirement will give game developers 10 percent additional graphics power to play with and help close the gap between the Xbox One and PS4. The story kicked off when Xbox head Phil Spencer tweeted that June's Xbox One dev kit gave devs access to more GPU bandwidth. Further, another Microsoft representative then confirmed that the performance improvement coming in the next version of the Xbox SDK was the result of making Kinect an optional accessory. No matter how Microsoft may try to spin it, cancelling Kinect isn't just a matter of giving game developers freedom, it's a tacit admission that game developers have no significant projects in play that are expected to meaningfully tap Kinect to deliver a great game experience — and they need those GPU cycles back.' Also on the Xbox capabilities front: Reader BogenDorpher (2008682) writes 'In August of last year, a Microsoft spokesman confirmed that the Xbox One controller will be compatible for PC users sometime in 2014. That time has finally come. Windows gamers can now use the Xbox One controller to play games on their computer. If a game supports a USB gamepad or the Xbox 360 controller, it will also support the Xbox One controller.'

Rebellion is letting Steam users download its World War II shooter Sniper Elite V2 for free and yes, you get to keep it "forever." The 24-hour promotion is good until tomorrow at 10:00am Pacific.

Sniper Elite V2 is that game in which you can shoot people and watch an x-ray replay of bones shattering, hearts popping, and eyes exploding. In fact, I just learned via YouTube tutorial how to land a nut shot on Hitler -- because that's a thing you're allowed to do.

This is a game I'd likely never buy, but download for free? Sure.

Sword fighting over the last few thousand years has had the unfortunate tendency to leave one of the opponents somewhat dead. In today’s more civilized society, death during swordplay is often avoided through the use of, well, non-lethal swords. Sadly, these are analogue affairs, leaving you to decide amongst yourselves who scores how many hits, and opening the door to the cheat who won’t admit to losing. Sabertron is a foam sword that introduces a digital component, one that should help you determine a victor more accurately. Outfitted with sensors, it knows when a hit has been blocked, and when it’s made contact with a soft body. Hit that soft flesh often enough, and you can walk away victorious. Perfect for those long Larping sessions, a $99 pledge will get you a pair, while more money buys more sophisticated “blades”.

Today Bethesda announced the first new title to come from their fairly new studio: Battlecry in development by...Battlecry. Battlecry is a free-to-play, third-person, 32-player team action combat game for PC. It plays and reads a lot like Team Fortress, but without the gunpowder.
